FORT MYERS, Fla. - Junior Adam Pegg poured in a game-high 23 points to lead five players in double figures for Stetson, as the Hatters built a lead as large as 24 before fending off a late FGCU rally to hand the Eagles an 86-80 loss in front of an Alico Arena crowd of 2,352. Trailing 71-47 with 8:22 to play, the Eagles turned to some full court pressure defense in hopes of slowing down the Stetson offense that was unstoppable the first 32 minutes. The full court pressure paid off, as Stetson committed five turnovers over the next seven minutes while FGCU used five three-pointers, including three from freshman FILIP CVJETICANIN, to mount a comeback. Cvjeticanin’s third three of the run followed by freshman DANTE HOLMES’ floater capped a 24-6 spurt for the Eagles that brought the home team within six, 77-71, with 1:28 to play. A rare four-point play by freshman BERNARD THOMPSON (pictured) and a three-pointer by sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL with 16 seconds left cut the score to 84-80 – the closest the Eagles had been since the 3:55 mark of the first half. Despite scoring 15 points over the final eight minutes, Stetson was able to hold onto its sixth A-Sun win of the year by knocking down 9-of-10 from the free throw line over the final 1:04. The free throw line proved to be the biggest difference in the game, as the Hatters went 24-of-31 from the stripe while the Eagles made 6-of-9.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Fueled by a program Division I record 15 three-pointers and 30 points by sophomore Torrey Craig, USC Upstate jumped out to a big halftime lead and fought off a second half surge by FGCU for an 87-74 Atlantic Sun win Thursday night at the Hodge Center. Craig had over half of the Spartans’ three-pointers, knocking down 8-of-14 from long range while adding nine rebounds and five assists. Freshman Ty Greene made it two Spartans with 20 points, going for 22 points on 5-of-6 from three. FGCU received a pair of 20-point games of its own, as junior SHERWOOD BROWN (pictured) and freshman BERNARD THOMPSON both reached the plateau. Brown’s team-best fourth 20-point game came on 9-of-23 from the field for 24 points and also featured seven rebounds. Thompson poured in 17 of his 20 in the second half, hitting on 4-of-6 from three-point land. Both teams were active on the offensive glass, combining for 43 offensive rebounds in a game that featured 135 shots. FGCU was able to corral its second straight game with at least 20 offensive rebounds resulting in 23 second chance points, but couldn’t overcome its 38 percent shooting night. On the flipside, USC Upstate shot 52 percent (15-29) from three and 46 percent (28-61) overall from the field.
