GAME 20

Jan. 18, 2009 GAME 21

FGCU Kennesaw State Kennesaw, Ga.

Over the final six minutes of the game, KSU held a four-point lead on five different occasions including a 70-66 lead with 11 seconds remaining. However, Florida Gulf Coast (8-12, 4-5 A-Sun) trimmed the Owls lead to one point when Reggie Chambers (Miramar, Fla.) drained a long distance three-pointer with 7.1 seconds left to play. The Owls had to withstand a desperation three-pointer from Chambers at the buzzer after McConnell missed the front-end of a one-and-one with just over two seconds left to play. FGCU had three players in in double-figures with Chambers scoring 15 points, Delvin Franklin (Houston, Tex.) finishing with 14 points, and Kyle Marks (West Palm Beach, Fla.) tallying 13 points as the Eagles dropped their second game in a row. The Eagles shot 51.1% from the field and 46.7% from long distance, but struggled at the charity stripe by shooting only 53.3% (16-of-30). FGCU committed 14 turnovers in the game while forcing only eight KSU turnovers. Chambers had a teamhigh three steals. The Ospreys opened the game on a 9-2 run. UNF held that lead for the rest of the first half, extending it to as much as 11 points after a Stan Januska three-pointer with 3:06 to play in the half. The Ospreys would carry an 11-point advantage into the half, leading 26-15. In the second half, FGCU scored the first four points to cut the lead to 26-19. UNF responded to bring the lead back up to 10 points at 30-20 with 17:02 left in the game. The Eagles then went on a 13-2 run, capped by a pair of Derrick O’Neil free throws, giving the Eagles their first lead of the game, 33-32. A jumper from Kyle Groothuis quickly gave the lead back to the Ospreys, but two more O’Neil free throws switched the lead once again. With 7:39 to play, Eni Cuka knocked down a three for the Ospreys, giving UNF a 37-35 lead. FGCU’s Ed Rolax came back to hit a jumper, and Reggie Chambers hit a pair of free throws on the next possession, giving FGCU the lead once again. But Cuka would respond again, connecting on another three with exactly 4:00 to play, giving the Ospreys a 41-39 lead. The score remained that way until a Reggie Chambers layup with 2:20 left, tying the game for the fifth time. UNF’s Germaine Sparks hit one of two free throws to regain the lead, but Reggie Chambers came up big again, driving the length of the court for another layup, giving the lead back to the Eagles with 1:49 to play. The Ospreys would again respond with a layup with 1:27 to play gave UNF a 44-43 lead. On FGCU’s next possession, Derrick O’Neil drove to the basket for a layup, giving the Eagles a 45-44 lead with 59 seconds left. At that point, the Eagles defense took over, shutting down the UNF offense for the remainder of the contest. The Eagles converted on five-of-six free throws down the stretch to earn the 50-44 victory.

Both teams came out of the gates shooting well, and within four and a half minutes the score was tied at 10. Ben Smith’s three with 13:27 left in the half put the Dolphins in front 15-12, but the Eagles rattled off eight consecutive points to take a 20-15 lead. Jacksonville battled back to tie it at 20 apiece, but FGCU clamped down on defense for the final 10 minutes of the half, allowing just two field goals to the Dolphins, and the Eagles carried a 29-24 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Eagles were able to push the lead out to as much as 11 points with 15:25 to play at 43-32. But over the next three and a half minutes, JU went on a 13-0 run to take a two point lead with just under 12 minutes to go. The Eagles regained the lead with 7:54 left thanks to a three from Reed Baker, but that would be the final lead that FGCU would hold. The Dolphins Lehmon Colbert hit a 3-pointer with 4:51 to play to extend the JU lead to four points, followed immediately by a 4-0 spurt by the Eagles to tie the game at 57 apiece. Shortly thereafter, Jacksonville’s Tevin Galvin hit a three, and after a Kyle Marks free throw, Ben Smith hit another three, putting the visitors out in front 63-58 with 2:36 to play. Marcus Allen’s layup and a free throw from Smith made it 66-58 with 1:05 left, essentially sealing the victory for the Dolphins. Derrick O’Neil’s three-point play with 48 seconds left brought the home team within five and momentarily gave the fans at Alico Arena a reason to stick around, but JU hit their free throws down the stretch, and eventually walked out of Alico with a 75-65 win. For the Eagles (9-13, 5-6), Reed Baker scored a team-high 15 points on 4-14 shooting from the field. Christian Wolf played a solid game, scoring 12 points and grabbing five boards in 20 minutes off the bench. Derrick O’Neil also reached double-figures in scoring with 10, and pulled down six rebounds as well.
