WATER TOWER RESIDENCE

Virginia Woolf, “Three levels of knowing”

CLIFTON, OHIO

“A design problem is not something to be overcome, but an opportunity to be embraced. The best design solutions do not make a problem go away, but accept them.

This shell developed through the geometric forms of the existing decomissioned water tower

This residential complex contains a wide variety of living closures with a total square area of over 17,000 sq ft, composed of 10 dwelling units. Additionally a roof garden located on top allows the residents to enjoy the great views while enriching the community. Due to the vast size and robust structure of this water tower, it is important to adhere and respond to the needs of the people by encouraging a diverse community within the city of portland.

WALL DETAIL

The existing tank is utilized to collect natural rainfall. The water would then seep through the dirt acting as both an entity that would purify the water and fertilize the soil.

A residence is a place where one can feel at peace, safe, and welcomed. This project aims to provide the upmost tranquility while still allowing the inhabitants the ability to feel connected with their family, friends, and community.

This house physically and metaphorically

displays different elements of one’s life. Relationships between public and private, outdoors and indoors, as well as community and household which are the inspirational factors of this design. Creating a place where SOUTH ELEVATION one can feel “at home” without seperating oneself from thier family or community is important. This house aims to achieve both comofort and openness.

SQUARE CIRCLE HEADQUARTERS LONDON, UK

This project is the headquarters for Square Circle, a graphic design company located in London, UK. The site is located to the west of canary wharf, a large business district along the River Tames. This project integrates many sustainable desgin strategies as well as unique aestetic elements to give this building the ability stand out amidst many grand-scale office spaces.

Square Circle Headquarters is a office/retail space that is designed as two seperate spaces. By creating a positive/negative relationship, these two structures can seem seperated but visually appear as one, integrating an open courtyard inbetween.

LYCEUM COMPETITION BARRE, VERMONT

The Wells-Lamson quarry has been inactive for more than 20 years. This project focuses on bringing life back to this deserted site using motives and tools of ages past as inspiration for the future design.

PROCESS

Since its opening in the 1780’s until its closing in 1985, derricks were seen scattered around the quarry. these monsters towered into the sky and appeared to be balanced by long tensioned cables. With this in mind the new design will once again rise from the large void. The design will reveal itself only after entering the transparent elevator which will carry them down allowing one to feel as though they are in the old baskets of the quarry. From there the cantilevered spaces will create a sense of suspense and awe, realizing once again how great man’s impact is on the world.

Visitors and artists can approach the studio spaces and residences through the main shaft which cascades down the side of the quarry, using the granite as an anchor which to provide adequate balance.

COMMUNITY CENTER YELLOW SPRINGS, OH

4*5& ."1

The Yellow Springs Community Center was origionally a small two story space built in the 1800’s. The addition of this space is inspired from the origional structure as well its relationship to its site. These two axis were the driving forces in the building’s strange orientation.

PARAMETRIC BRIDGE CLIFTON, OHIO

This project is accomplished primarily using parametric design. This type of design is a scripting tool which allows structures such as this bridge to take many different shapes before a final, most efficient, and most elegant design is accomplished. This approach to design is becoming very popular with many new architecture and engineering endeavours. Design processes which would take hours to produce can now be produced much faster. Furthermore, the amount of materials are quickly estimated and arranged in order to decrease waste and produce a more sustainable future as a result.

Begin with cuve in Rhino and give the surface geometry.

Insert contol points to monitor and adapt bridge width based on interior program.

ARTWORK

Sketching has always been a fun way for me to explore the arts. Ever since I was a child I found myself drawing people and things which I loved. I find myself sketching now more than ever, with the desire to bring a 2D image to life.
