ou say you want to grasp your hearts desires, but the steps you take are the complete opposite of your road to success. You speak negatively, no consistency, but yet you still speak highly of yourself. Now, do you think this will lead you to success? There needs to be a drastic change. Just think, you surround yourself with negative personalities (your so-called friends), social media, and the outcome is a person (you) emerged in negativity. Now, do you honestly believe you will go far with these bad omens constantly encircling you? It's time to turn your life around; being positive is the change that will drastically adjust your entire world. Every entity of your life will become clearer and you will strive to possess the knowledge that's supportive of your journey. Just stop and think of this next question: When negativity clouds your mind what’s accomplished? Nothing, right?...That's what we thought. Spend your days with a calm and pure mind, and we can guarantee a beautiful outcome. It may be a struggle at first, but as you progress you will begin to see better days and your ambitions will become reality. There's no turning back; only learn from your past life. Realize you have developed growth for specific reasons (which will be different for each person). Have the gumption to apply positive energy into your lifestyle and encourage the ones around you. These words of our own encourage the FetchEdge team constantly, so we figured we would share them with you. Continue to grow with us; impress less, and inspire more. Lets chase our purpose driven life TOGETHER, nothing but good can come from it. Thank you all for the support. -Ashley & Carlisa

BEHIND THE CULTURE WARHOL LIVE!

WARHOL

LIVE!

THE BIG BANNER OF ANDY WARHOL’S SELF PORTRAIT ON THE SIDE OF FRISK MUSEUM IN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE AESTHETICALLY DEPICTED HIS FORM OF ARTWORK; CORKY AND EXHILARATING. Although the banner could be described as crazy, it portrayed his passion for himself and his craft. The background was black, his skin was changed to yellow, his eyes were piercing, and his hair was spiked. Sounds weird, huh? Actually, this is the excitement of art. Art allows a person to illustrate their thoughts and vision. That’s the beauty of it. Everyone may not agree, but it will be a hand full of people who understand. If not, they will just make-up their own explanation of the artwork; and that’s perfectly fine too.

Andy Warhol had an extraordinary career that twisted the traditional role of artwork. Warhol revealed himself as the pioneer of multimedia, sound art, and performance, but also a model of the artist attuned with himself and his time. This made it obvious the importance of Warhol in the art community. Warhol was famous for pioneering pop art, but he also had other interest. His two major influences were music and choreography, which were included in every aspect of his art and life. His first interest was

music, which intermixed with several visual arts: drawing, graphic design, illustration, painting, performance, photography, and stage design. Since childhood, Warhol was mesmerized by the Hollywood lifestyle. Each performer in the film industry amazed him, including his favorites, Judy Garland and Shirley Temple. Warhol received his most prized possessions in 1941: a signed photograph from Shirley Temple. Other influences derived from any aspect of daily media, including newspaper, magazine and tabloids. Who would’ve thought he had his own magazine named “Interview,” which was ran by his close friends and tapped into the world of many mainstream musical artists. He also wrote an assortment of texts, including a book about his personal philosophy, a journal, a novel, and a guide to celebrities.

many relationships with musical artist. The structure of his artwork stemmed from repetition, but best believe each image showed something different. The array of bold colors capitalized on his unique aesthetics. Each color set a different tone and allowed for the mind to wonder.

AS FOR ARETHA, HE OUTLINED HER LIPS WITH RED SINCE THEY WERE ALREADY FULL.

By the 1960s, Warhol was engrossed in the field of avant-garde art and music. His defining traits in his unprecedented work involved serial imagery, interest in dissolving the boundaries that separate art form life, and reliance on chance. He was a fan of self-portraits and using material such as cardboard and cans. Actually, his self-portraits were humorous and entertaining. He had a great sense of humor, that probably only a few understood. His artwork screamed “I’m going to be myself!” This is probably why he had

What really stood out was his slight fascination with lips. He highlighted lips by making the women he illustrated, such as Aretha Franklin and Marilynn Monroe different. For instance, Marilynn Monroe had thin lips, but he made them pop by using a bright red to make them noticeable. As for Aretha, he outlined her lips with red since they were already full.

Many people may not have appreciated Andy Warhol’s artistic mind, but he added spice into the art world. He didn’t follow the rules and made his own. His mark in the artistic world will forever live on. He was the truth and will never be forgotten.

FetchEdge is not to impress but to inspire, when asked what inspires him his answer is was genuine and full of personality. “What inspires me is my dream. Doing hurre in St. Louise was not going to cut it. I have used my craft as a vehicle to get to other places and as I continue to inspire, I won’t stop there.” FetchEdge is a lifestyle movement, whose motto is bridging the gap between cultures while promoting an acceptance of self and appreciation of expressionism.” Being an international hairstylist Anthony Cherry has connected cultures by captivating those with his gravitating persona and excelling at his craft. According to Mr. Cherry its more than hair, one learns that self esteem is just as vital. With his knowledge of people and thorough knowledge of styling, he serves by building both and staying true to himself. Who am I? A common issue that we all can relate to is self acceptance. I asked Mr. Cherry “being a man who is superb at styling hair, how have you come to point of reception with the talents God has given you?” He replied, “I know who I am. I have overcome so much that with God and faith I owe it all. In life do your best and know that you can’t please every-

body.” His words are so true and can be applied to all aspects of life. Mr. Cherry is always asked, “Who have you worked with?” Drop the names!!! but contrary to that, its more about who does he want to work with. “I want to work with JLO, Lil Kim, and Oprah.” With his amazing persona and evolving craft he will surely have these goals accomplished. With the Summer time here Mr. Cherry gives his awesome hair care tips, “No FRIZZ ladies, the summer is all about a sleek, straight, clean look.” Mr. Cherry like FetchEdge is all for inspiring, his final message for those with Dreams is to, “Never give up, the day you give up could be the day you get it.”

KUSTOM THRILLS

Chris Saint Clark is far from just your ordinary tattoo artist he has the

whole creation down pack of what tattooing and tattoo artist should be about. Chris Saint Clark is a tattoo artist in Nashville Tn. He specializes in Black and Gray Realism. He is the author of a book on the same subject and is well known in the tattoo industry for his style and seminars on tattooing technique. He is a Freemason and Shriner, and the Tennessee State Representative for the Alliance of Professional Tattooists. A trade organization that teaches and promotes safe work practices in tattooing to prevent infectious disease transmission. “See” more than just your ordinary tattoo artist! Chris gets it done and is involved. Fetch Edge got the chance to sit down & speak with him, while in the works of actually tattooing a customer…

W

hat was it that first attracted you to Perusing to be a tattoo artist? I tell everyone Rock n roll, Harley's and fast living, but I've been an artist my whole life and it was my lifestyle that moved me in this direction. I have always been attracted to

the look and it was simply a natural choice. Where did you get the name kustom thrills? If anyone knows me, they know I am into "Kustom Kulture" (spelled with a K to make it custom!) it’s a subculture that started on the west coast, and revolves around all things rockabilly, hot rods, and lowbrow art. It’s a rebellious attitude towards the conformity of conservative society in the art world. I wanted my studio's name to reflect that. Also I wanted people to know that all we do is one off (kustom) artwork! And none better than

to make it a Thrill! How did you start off with your own shop? I started tattooing over 13 years ago in Atlanta at a very nice studio called Sacred Heart. When I moved to Nashville I wanted to capture that essence of inspiration in my studio. We have been open for close to 5 years now. What's a day like with your whole crew at kustom thrills? It’s a lot of fun; I handpicked everyone that works here. So we are a family. My motto is “If you can’t come to work and laugh and have fun then Go Home!" I want my studio to be serious when we need to buckle down and create, and be the Greatest place ever to come work at. What was one of the major tattoos a customer has come to you to get? Well we work on a lot of major tattoos weekly. We do full back pieces and sleeves constantly. Portraiture and realism is what I specialize in so every one of those designs are major efforts on my part. What were the longest tattoos you've ever done so far? I have done 2 very long sittings in my career and both were the same idea and very close in proxim-

ity of time. They were 9 and half hours each and both were realistic locomotive tattoos. When a customer brings in a piece for what they want. What type of inspiration do you add to it when you start to create the tattoo? I do a consultation with every client and try to bring out their ideas and make them come alive. The artistic part is my own. Do you see kustom thrills expanding in other states? My plan is to be worldwide. I don’t like to shoot for goals; I like to shoot through them. I already travel to Conventions all over the US and have been for a long

time. I do about 20 shows a year under my company name now. As for the physical address?..........Just wait, sit back and watch the show! You’ll know soon enough! What inspires you to create? Just about everything, I have a natural drive everyday to create something, but it wasn’t always that way I had to develop that by forcing myself into living in that mode. What was your biggest challenge you had to overcome? Relaxing! haha! Once I was able to do that and let the creative process work for me I found that I had no limitations. What advise you have for aspiring tattoo artist? To buy my book! And follow a proper apprenticeship. What are some of the things you do in the alliance of

professional tattooist’s trade organization? Please visit our site! Safe-Tattoos.com it explains all that we are involved.

BEHIND THE CULTURE ORDI NARY PEOPLE DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS CHEF KEITH BATTS

CHEF BATTS When the moment came to take a stand on not only a healthier America, but the desire to capitalize on his destiny, Chef Keith Batts led like no one before him. He talks to FetchEdge about his inspiration and his plan to take the food industry by storm.

Introducing Chef Keith Batts

We have been hearing a lot about the Chef Batts and his craft, all over twitter you will periodically see someone tweet “how delicious a meal they had prepared by @chefbatts was”. The FetchEdge team had the chance to dine in on one of Chef Batts’ exclusive dishes and instantly fell in love with his expertise!! We were eager to know more.

Chef Batts’ is so special! He did what a lot of people wish they could do but don’t have the courage to do. FOLLOWED HIS DREAMS. “What pushed me to follow my dream of becoming a chef was [the fear of] matriculating thru this journey of life, always asking myself the "What IF" question. “ Through hard work

and dedication he not only held positions as a chef at Safire Bar and Grill, and Opryland’s Old Hickory Steakhouse, he started his own company. “When I began to pursue this dream, it just seem as though everything was falling into place.” He is now partnering with the Community Food Advocates (a non-profit

advocating healthy eating in communities considered to be food deserts*) where he shows the youth how to make pizzas with fresh ingredients. His inspiration comes from the desire to create his own legacy of greatness. As he continues the journey of his divine purpose, along with his ultimate goal - owning his own chain of restaurants- he holds the memory of his moms voice saying, “son you don’t want to be working for someone your whole life,” ... “That is where I got my entrepreneurial spirit. “In a world where we are so afraid to follow are dreams, but respect the ones that do, what was it that made the light bulb in

Chef Batts’ head go off? “I didn't want to feel like I was being forced to go to work every day, I wanted to be able to go to work and enjoy myself. Many people today don't even know why they go to work every day. I know I go to work every day to perfect my craft, so in essence I'm getting paid to practice. Who wouldn't want to have that life? Get to do what I love and get paid, that in itself inspires me everyday, my advice to everyone: you never reached your true potential, until you’re out of your comfort zone. Don't be afraid to follow your dreams, find what you love to do and make it make you money!”

BEHIND THE CULTURE ORDI NARY PEOPLE DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS MARTEZ BURKS

MARTEZ BURKS

The Fetchedge team had a chance to read a mind stimulating conversation piece entitled, “Memoirs of a Gentleman”. This book sparked up so much conversation that we had to explore the genius behind the memoir - Martez Burks.

Martez Burks is a graduate of Tennessee State Uni-

versity and recently completed his master's degree in counseling psychology. The self-proclaimed gentleman is making moves in the entertainment industry's melting pot as a club promoter with Nashville, TN-based FlyMajor.com. The inspiration behind his work, Memoirs of a Gentleman: The Unspoken Truth, published spring of 2010, sprang from a lifestyle of ongoing meetings with the “Who's-Who” of urban elite Nashville society, and countless interactions with women.

WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE, WHAT PUSHED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK? My inspiration is centered on my love for encouraging and helping others. The inspiration of writing a book starting off as a mere thought and idea, I never really pure it until I realized how much I can influence others. Understanding the psyche of young adult males it dawned on me that we are strangers to reading books so I wanted to change that by writing something intriguing for them to engage in. Growing up around individuals who could not read, nor write bothered me. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE BEHIND THIS MEMOIR, WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR READERS TO RECEIVE FROM IT? The book purpose is mainly a conversational starter; I wanted the real life scenarios to serve as a conversational piece for couples, book clubs, social media etc. With the advancement of Facebook, twitter and other media outlets people very rarely hold conversations anymore so Memoirs of a Gentleman was created to do as such. WHAT HARDSHIPS AND ADVERSITIES HAVE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME? Honestly, I’ve been blessed and overcoming adversity is slim to none, the typical single parent home mother working two jobs while grandmother look over my brother and I growing up. The biggest challenge was overcoming the death of my grandmother she moti-

vates me to keep God first, pursue all of my dreams and live life to the fullest. She only had a 10th grade education but she raised 11 kids and did a wonderful job. She motivated me to go all the way with my education and stop for nothing, that’s why I value education so much because she was deprived of hers. Personally, writing and getting my book published was the most significant thing in my life thus far because I had a goal to accomplish and set my mind towards completing it. Without having experience in writing nor connections to publishing companies I had to do my own research and follow my dreams. AWESOME, DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS? Advice for authors is to continue to write and stay self motivated. Writing is only half of the battle if you go through self publishing companies you have to be your own marketing team to get your book where you want it. My goal was to sell one copy and have someone read a book for the first time, so I accomplished my dream, but whatever goal you set make sure you work towards it and nothing less. The only person holding/stopping YOU is You.

BEHIND THE CULTURE ORDI NARY PEOPLE DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS KAY-B

kay-b

The young woman responsible for creating a craze far beyond the DMV sat down with FETCHEDGE to discuss her journey to attaining fulfillment and happiness. Boasting three mix tapes, which can be found at datpiff.com, it is no secret that she is on the fast road to success. “If I’m [living] in a cardboard box, at least I know I got something over my head,” says Kay-B when asked if she would pursue her dream career even if it meant working for free, being homeless and living on the streets. Kay-B, born Kiarra Brit¬tany Hart, is a 22-year-old up-and-coming disc jockey, current on-air radio per¬sonality, aspiring music vid-eo director and, yes, even a basketball coach.

Raised in Landover, Md., growing up Kay-B actively participated in television production shows at school, acting as a cameraman and later an¬chor, and was also a mem¬ber of her middle and high school basketball team. She describes herself as being “a shooting guard with a mean jump shot.” With a television background, perhaps it is of no surprise that today she is a senior broadcast journalism student at Florida A&M University. When choosing a college Kay-B did not know what she wanted to major in, but “decided to attend FAMU mainly be-cause of its radio station.”

For the past four years, listeners have tuned in to Kay-B’s neo-soul show Monday nights at 10 p.m., on WANM 90.5.

I’M NOT LIKE ANYONE ELSE.

“I always knew I wanted to do radio and film and the radio station is what caught my attention,” Kay-B says. “The thing about it was that it’s so diverse. Every other college station played the same stuff but 90.5 was more flexible and the genres ranged from jazz to hip-hop to reggae.”

Sean-D, the Operations Manager for 90.5, has known Kay-B since 2007 and says, “She’s a person that likes to learn.” “I mean she has a great personality,” says her colleague. “She’s a real and warm type of person. Over the years I’ve seen her grow inside and out of the studio.”

Kay-B says she enjoys promoting positive and thought provoking messages, which is why she chose to host a neosoul show. She claims that this particular genre of music “gets you thinking.” “I like artists like Erykah Badu,” Kay-B says. “She’s truth.” Aside from being on the radio, for the past few years Kay-B has taken her career to even greater heights.

While Intern¬ing at CBS radio and MTVU, she learned all about being a videog¬rapher, programming and the importance of creating show content. Most recently, she competed to be a videogra¬pher at the 2010 Oscars, and was seen as a finalist on the Red Carpet, alongside FAMU Alumnus Brandon McCaskill. Kay-B recalls the memory and says, “What was special is that we made it to the top three in Hollywood.” Presently, she is working on a documentary and making plans to spear¬head a production company. She says her inspiration is her family, while her motivation is life and her ability to be better. As the oldest of five, Kay-B believes it is her responsibility to act as a role model for others. She does this through coaching girls ages nine and under in basketball at a local Tallahassee com¬munity center. She enjoys helping out and says the girls learn a lot more than just skills from her. In fact they “learn lessons about life...gaining confidence, letting go and teamwork.” However, it is not just the younger crowd who admire her; she inspires her peers as well. Jessica Davis, a senior business marketing student from Washington, D.C. says what she respects most about Kay-B is her “fearless personality.” “I definitely admire her, because she’s a dedicated and driven person,” says Davis, Kay-B’s friend of three years. “She’s always optimistic and always has a can-do personality.” With less than a year left in school, after college Kay-B wants to “make that move to Brooklyn” and intern at MTV, Nylon or Complex magazine. What she really wants to do though, is work for herself. Sean-D is convinced that Kay-B will do well wherever she ends up. “Honestly, a person of Kay-B’s caliber can excel in any¬thing she wants to do. I wouldn’t even want to put her in one box.”

Before ending the interview to work on a personal logo for her production company, a confident Kay-B simply says, “I’m not like anyone else.” Before ending the interview to work on a personal logo for her production company, a confident Kay-B simply says, “I’m not like anyone else.” sure you work towards it and nothing less. The only person holding/stopping YOU is You.

BEHIND THE CULTURE ORDI NARY PEOPLE DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS PONDER

Pen. Paper. Movie Screen.

PONDER

We all have a story. We all have an imagination. We all have ideas. Matthew Ponder is just hoping his pay off…well. We recently spoke with the 23-yearold, Atlanta native, Nashville dweller, bank rep by day, writer by night, who is hoping his soon-to-be film script entitled “Cacophony”, helps him hit it big. His post collegiate life has become mundane and uneventful and he is looking for a way out. Young, ambitious, witty and intelligent, Ponder is willing to risk it all to win it big – the type you always want to be on the lookout for. Because as he put it so humorously, “there is no Plan C I’m writing or striping and I hope it’s not the latter.” Ponder knows better than anyone that his Steven Spielberg aspirations won’t happen overnight, so for now he’s got a story, a pen, paper, and movie screen dreams.

SO PONDER, YOU HAVE RECENTLY VENTURED INTO SCREENWRITING AND YOU HAVE A NEW PROJECT IN THE WORKS ENTITLED “CACOPHONY”. TELL US MORE ABOUT IT. I don’t want to tell too much. But it is a dystopian film based on a society devoid or artistic expression of any kind, no music, no art or anything like that. It’s reminiscent of The Giver by Lois Lowry or Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. I’ve always loved stories like that. They thrust you into a society so unlike your own but at the same time have so many hidden messages that end up being so explicable to our everyday lives.

I don’t think anyone would expect me to write such heavy material. In “Cacophony” there are a lot of sub-stories that I feel people will be able to pick up on and interpret in their own ways – and I like writing like that. I like writing something that will have you thinking a little different then you typically do.

I’M NOT THAT CLASSY.

SOUNDS LIKE SOME PRETTY HEAVY THOUGHT PROVOKING STUFF. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO WRITE A FILM ABOUT THIS TOPIC? I consider myself a real music buff. I crack jokes a lot.

DO YOU WORRY THAT THEY SUBJECT COULD BE TOO DEEP OR SERIOUS FOR THE AVERAGE VIEWER? That’s really not my problem. That’s really not even a concern of mine. Not to be an arrogant humorous prick, but I feel like its art, and I don’t worry about how it’s perceived. That’s why it’s important to write honestly. People see through the bullsh*t.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WRITING? I would describe it to be classical. Like a Catcher in

the Rye but not so pretentious. I don’t want viewers to be bombarded with vocabulary words they haven’t heard since the SAT’s, and miss the message. YOU ATTENDED FISK AND MAJORED IN POLITICAL SCIENCE, HOW DID YOUR INTEREST IN SCREENWRITING COME ABOUT? I would be sitting in class daydreaming about stories and lectures, like Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and I would be turning it into some modern day film. I’m very visual. My mind is always wondering. I’ve been writing since I was a kid and I always had a wild imagination. HAVE YOU ALWAYS ENJOYED READING AND WRITING? I actually have. I grew with the artistic genes. My sister had everything else; she’s a doctor [laughing]. I got bored with stuff in school. I never understood how Pythagoras would benefit me in my life. I feel like you have to use artistic expression. WHO DO YOU ASPIRE TO BE LIKE? I don’t really idolize anyone. But I guess, myself in my dreams. My ultimate self…that only shows up in my dreams. IS YOUR “DREAM-SELF” ATTAINABLE? Time will only tell [laughs]. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Random acts of selflessness. BEING THAT YOU ARE VENTURING INTO SCREENWRITING, WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OR SHOW?

I really don’t watch TV. Cable is more of a conversation piece at our house. But, I do watch a lot of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Dexter. Favorite movie would be Life is Beautiful or To Sir, With Love staring Sidney Poitier. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WRITING? It’s honest. It’s a great way to express your true self. WHY SHOULD FETCH EDGE READERS BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR “CACOPHONY?” Because, I want to be rich and successful one day [laughs]. But no seriously. DO YOU CONSIDER SCREENWRITING AN ART FORM? Yeah, honestly, it’s one of the only ways that I’m artistic. I have friends that can draw, sing and paint and all that type of sh*t, and I always wondered what’s my talent, my art? As I’ve gotten older I realized that the ability to relate [through writing] is an art. Everyone isn’t born with that. WELL PONDER, THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO SPEAK WITH US. WE WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK AND WE WILL DEFINITELY BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR “CACOPHONY”. WAS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANTED TO ADD? I wish I could quote some Che Guevara or something [laughs], but I’m not that classy.

Even if the picture didn’t visually display our thoughts, we were able to explain to whomever the definition of each mark on the paper. As we got older, we began coloring in the lines and actually creating real figures. To those who registered in their mind that art was their talent, they began taking

forming, and most importantly, their designs sustain a uniqueness that’s fitting for daily life. Come on people, it's 2011 and you are still sitting on the same couch that has been past down in your family for 20+ years. Time to give it up! Just like how you upgrade your closet every so often, you need to do the exact same for your living quarters. Hell, why not? I bet if you bought new furniture that looked amazing, your life would be filled with better days. You would probably want to invite more people over and have more great times. I know I would. Now, I don’t want this to sound like a history lesson, but who wouldn’t want to know the creator of this amazing company? The mastermind behind this company is Giulio Cappellini. Homes and museums, including ... have been graced with there futuristic beautiful designs. Check this out though, they began with wood furniture, but now they have items in plastic, metal, fiberglass, glass and upholstered products, both traditional and industrial. Now, that's extreme growth! They could have only made

wood furniture, but they were smart enough to realize that wood products will soon dissolve. Also, plastic and metal furniture are much cooler anyway! Ha! Isn't it so obvious that Cappellini is ahead of their times. Just for the simple fact of being a rebel and not following the “rules” laid out for contemporary design companies. Cappellini is an adventure and every journey leads to a new creation that exudes originality and tastefulness. Just like how we chose our favorite colors to develop our masterpiece, Cappellini fuses together designers from around the globe to produce different structures. With every personality that lends a helpful hand, the better the quality of their work. That's why Cappellini has been around for over 60 years; they continue to expand their company and allow for creative minds to do what they know best... be CREATIVE! Many companies these days fail because they stick to ONE thing and are afraid to go beyond. Cappellini learned the "rules" of their product and created their own artform, that will last for lifetimes. I mean, come on, how many furniture companies do you know that have been displayed in museums across the world?...I'll wait... Exactly! The guys over at Cappellini know what they are doing and it shows that they love their craft.

COVER STORY

ASHTHON JONES WRITTEN BY: Angelica Roberts

For most vocalists, pursuing a professional career in music is not an easy task; just ask R&B sensation, Ashthon Jones. For this rising star, hard times, death and penniless moments are just a few things she experienced, prior to making it opposite the camera, amidst the bright lights and in front of millions of viewers.

A

fter sneaking on the phone while on-the-job to answer, perhaps, one of the most important calls of her musical career, 25-year-old Ashthon Jones, was greeted by her mother who confidently said, “Ash trust me.” That very statement is what propelled Ashthon to give up her much needed job as a manager at the Underground Station in Nashville, in order to audition for a spot on the 10th season of American Idol. “Me and my mom used to watch Idol all the time, and she used to always tell me to try out,” says the Valdosta, Ga., native. “But I knew it wasn’t my time.” Two years later, that time finally came. Once she took that first step of faith, Ashthon received confirmation that she had been chosen to advance to the next round of the competition, and

became one of the top 13 finalists on the show. A younger Ashthon could only dream about this day, and says although she was raised in the church, when she was coming up she didn’t exactly live “a picket fence life.” In fact, “Growing up I had a lot of issues.” As a child Ashton would commute between Valdosta, where her extended family lived, to her mother’s house in Nashville. At 14-years-old Ashthon, who didn’t know her biological father or like her stepfather, lost the only father she ever knew to Pneumonia. She soon began feeling like a burden to her mother, who had four other children and no money, and was emotionally drained. She describes this period of her life as being the “normal teenage years.” Normal is a stretch, because eventually she went missing. Labeled as a runaway at the age of 15, Ashton attempted to escape what she considered the hard

aj

life, only to be hit with reality. Drugs, parties and venturing into different cities became her life for over two years. With a fake ID and no real agenda, over time she grew “tired of running.” It was not until she was involved in a car accident in Miami, a situation that forced her to be confronted by police that she decided to reveal her true identity. The officers pulled her information up on a missing persons list, and before long, her Grandfather was contacted. Ashthon was soon reunited with her family. “I’m comfortable about talking about my life, because I know where I am today,” says the singer who finds joy in speaking with teenagers about her many life experiences. “I mean I’ve tried it all.” It was then that Ashthon chose to use her past as inspiration to be better. After receiving her GED she made plans to join the Air Force, but before being sent to training she decided stay in Nashville, in order to spend quality time with her mother. She never did get sent off. Instead, she remained in the Music City with hopes of starting a music career. Gospel and inspirational music is what she first began recording, but she later turned to R&B. With help from Bar-None, a producer known for his work with G-Unit and Pimp C, Ashthon landed a publishing deal at 19.

“I was a singer and writer, and had two music videos,” says the artist. Though things were looking up, they later spiraled downward when she made the decision to return to inspirational music. “The company didn’t agree with it so I walked away from it,” says a firm Ashthon. “I should have the freedom to put God in my music if I want to.” This decision caused her to lose her car and forced her to get a job in retail; but despite everything that was going on around her she remained optimistic. Finally came the call from her mother that may have changed her life. That minute-long conversation resulted in her standing center stage of American Idol, until she was let go. Following her cover of Diana Ross' "When You Tell Me That You Love Me,” the judges unanimously voted Ashthon off. During the elimination Jennifer Lopez admittedly said, “I was rooting for you baby.” Despite her loss, today Ashthon remains in close contact with many of her fellow contestants who she considers as friends, and says she is happy for the winner of Season 10, Scotty McCreery.

“I’m glad that he won,” says a sincere Ashton. “I got to see his spirit behind the scenes…he never got upset and was always humble.” Although she is currently unable to sign with anyone due to her contract with American Idol, Ashthon has been traveling between Atlanta and Los Angeles speaking at engagements, making appearances and hosting events. She is particularly excited about her new song entitled “Chocolate Factory,” and says that the song gives listeners a “commercial candy feel.” On twitter the young singer tweeted, “…It’s not about being famous; it’s about making the people you love proud. Always remember that.” Ashthon aims to please her loved ones, particularly her mother and speaks about how her mom is her main source of inspiration. “We found out she had breast cancer right before the finale… she’s the strongest person I’ve ever known.” Ashthon says the fame can come with it, but all she really wants is to “grow closer with God and to take care of family.”

alutations, FetchEdge readers! For those of you who do not know me, my name is Stephanie Nnamani, but I prefer to go by Teff Fonzarelli or teff, the don. I am 21 years of age, soon to turn 22 on the 8th of November. I am a student of psychology, a photographer, a free-form writer, blogger and rookie stylist; a woman of many talents, you may say. I was born in Nigeria and spent some great portions of my childhood there. Relocated to London with my family, then, the U.S., more specifically, the magnificent state of New York. Let's fast

forward a bit to the current state of things: I have been in love with the art of writing prior to learning how to write. I remember destroying pages after pages of my siblings' notebooks with nonsensical scribbles in an effort to express myself as early as the age of 5. Ever since I've viewed the art of writing as a great way to learn about the self and the-self-that-observes-the-self. You would be amazed at what you can learn when left to wander the depths of the human mind. As for photography, I have always indulged in the

beauty of it, but truly began exploiting my interest in it about 3 years ago. I have been active with photography for roughly a year now and I can boldly state I am delighted with the extents in which my knowledge of it has reached. I am self-taught; it's entirely much more rewarding that way. I have never taken a photography

course, nor have I glanced at a book or manual pertaining to photography. I specialize in lifestyle, live performance and portraitures. I am a child of solitude; it is my strong conviction that the greatest source of inspiration lies within the self. I am inspired by love, truth, self-fulfillment, as well as the pursuit of all three. I aspire to attain self-fulfillment, regardless of whatever I succeed at. Most people base their image of success on what they've seen come of others; I say success is in the eye of the beholder. It is up to you to design your idea of success and pursue it so diligently that everything you

do, results in a greater you. I am governed by passion. Passion, like love, is not mine to command. When my heart desires, it consumes and embraces whatever in its entirety. It can pose as a burden at times, but it's one that I bear with much appreciation. Music is one of my greatest inspirations. I perform best in the presence of it. I am, but a mere empty vessel in the absence of it. I desire to see, as well as delight in seeing a search for a greater truth in others. I believe that it is necessary that we be

all that we wish to see in others; any other way would be unjust and dishonest. I seldom seek the company of others, but when I do, I find that I delight in the company of the witty and artistic. Like Queen Badu stated, "creativity is the absence of doubt"; when one indulges in their creative prowess, the element of doubt diminishes with each expression of it. I think that concludes all that I can share with you lots; I'll leave the rest of the story to be told in my photographs.

f

rom Will Smith to Jay-Z, we have seen most celebrities share a common choice of footwear, sneakers. From the OG Mike’s, Martin Lawrence use to rock in the early 90’s to the numerous amount of entertainers spotted in sneakers today: from Big Sean, to J.Cole, to Wale, to Jay-Z(the list could go for days). Some people want to know why is it so important to purchase these shoes, why have you seen people fight for having there shoes, of all things, stepped on. Some want to know why everyone who didn’t get the Cool Grey 11’s were sick and you probably can find a

plethora of things to do with the $175. Well here it is, it’s HISTORY. Most of the sneakers that are being worn today day are symbolic part of history, mostly sports history. From the Jordans, to Retro Nike’s, to the Chuck Taylor’s that your uncles talked about he played ball in. These retro kicks symbolize more than just a comfortable sole and a Nike sign. My job is by no means to sell you non-sneaker heads on why you should wear sneakers, but more so to understand the essence behind this madness. Well since ’84 when Jordan signed his contract to Nike to wear these piggy banks, people have been ranting over sneakers. While growing up and witnessing great moments, people often re-live those lost memories of Jordan torturing the opponents to win the game. Often times when we see retro sneakers we had when we were younger, we remember the time, place, grade and what things were like while admiring these shoes. Like the recent 11 I.E. Low releases, how many people know MJ scored 46 in Madison Square Garden in ‘96 When we purchase or rock these shoes, it’s more of a historical moment, it’s not just a Nike, it’s more than a shoe.

fter the John Galliano scandal, his former assistant Bill Gaytten was appointed over the design duties. This was the first show without Galliano in 15 years. Gaytten's inspirations included postmodern pop patterns of Italian designs& architect Ettore Sottsass; the work of Jean-Michel Frank, Jean Dunand, the Swiss Art Deco lacquer artist; and Jean-Paul Goude, French photographer, illustrator, and graphic artist. Throughout the show you can see it was combined with many of these inspirations. Many say it didn't fit the Dior brand. The opening look included a jacket with a ruffled collar and a pleated skirt. A lot of the looks included 60's style era pleated skirts. Dior Haute Couture collection included bold prints, several pastel colored crop jackets, and vibrant bubblegum pencil skirts. The collection was swarmed with folded tiered fabric. Many of the looks were designed with gazar - a more lightweight silkier organza, organza, and unfinished taffeta. You can also see the architectural influence throughout the collection. The dresses were layered with candy colored tops, almost like candy treats. The collection was very 80s dominated. The chiffon gowns had carnation styled details. The dresses were also bohemian style, the

gowns were designed with candy tiered details as well. The Dior Haute Couture Collection Fall/Winter 2011 received mixed reviews. Many argued that the inspirations were all over the place and most importantly it didn't fit the Dior brand.

Dsquared2

Dean and Dan Caten are the duo behind Dsqaured2. The spring 2012 was full of color for men. The collection was also filled with day-to-day wear for the typical guy. Throughout the show, they take you through many stops as if the models were tourist, London, Florence, and the Greek island of Mykonos. The collection showed brightly tanned guys adorned in bright colors. The collection put you in a beach resort mind frame as the looks changed. There were several looks where the guys wore thick ribbed socks over their pants with paneled outwear and nautical pea coats. Cotton sport jackets were paired with bright colored khakis and sandals. The collection featured rock n roll inspired leather jackets with studded lapels and denim. The collections featured many classic looks turned eccentric. The looks were very practical and also wearable.

he 21st century women is business savvy and yet still young and fashionable. Her style is chic and can easily transition from daytime business attire to evening party wear. Therefore, there are attire essentials that every woman should own to make this possible, and these garments are the foundation that help build a wardrobe. Avoid spending tons of money on trendy items that don’t get many wears and quickly go out of style. Get more for your money and splurge on garments that are of great long lasting quality and that you’ll get the most mileage from, meaning they don’t ever go out of style. It’s okay to occasionally purchase up-to-the-minute items but the basis of your wardrobe should be classic and timeless. It’s a good idea to get these items in neutral colors so you can mix and match and create more combinations. The best neutrals for cool skin tones are black, navy, grey, snow and soft white. The best neutrals for warm skin tones are brown, navy, olive, camel and cream. Remember, these items create timeless style and will be worn frequently so it’s okay to splurge on them. Most importantly, make sure they fit well and make your feel confident and beautiful! Check out the top 10 wardrobe essentials that every woman should own!

Dark Wash Denim Jeans Every

woman has a favorite pair of jeans but finding the perfect pair can be a dreading task. Start with dark wash denim, this wash looks polished and flattering. Body shapes vary so choosing a fit is essential. The most complimenting cuts are straight leg, boot cut and skinny. These cuts are slimming and create a taller much leaner look. Denim with a touch of stretch is always a plus! The stretch material will help the jeans hug your curves and make for a more comfortable fit. Jeans should fit snug not tight. Also, this particular jean should not be overly trendy so avoid high-waisted, colored stitching, bedazzled etc.

01

White Button Up A crisp white button up shirt or blouse is a necessity for every woman’s closet! And I emphasize, WHITE! Not beige or cream but WHITE. It gives you a sharp, clean, sophisticated look. The white button up is appropriate for work, church, interviews etc. Most often you’ll wear it with your suit jacket or under a cardigan. If your style is trendier, create a different look by pairing it with your dark wash denim and adding a waist belt or even try wearing it open with a camisole underneath. This is definitely a classic look and important to have available at all time.

03

Black Dress Pants Perfect for the business woman as well as the classy fashionista! These also help slim and elongate the body. The material you chose is up to you, but find something you feel comfortable and confident in. These pants should fit snug NOT tight and should flatter your curves, but not overly expose them. It might work to your advantage to get a pair that go well with your tailored jacket/blazer and white button up to create a three piece suit. These as well are versatile and can be worn with a dressy blouse and fun shoes to give a totally different look aside from the business look.

04

Little Black Dress From a

business meeting, straight to cocktail hour, the little black dress is both classic and versatile. The ideal LBD (little black dress) should be knee length and sleeveless or solid shoulder. Avoid overly sexy or tight dresses. Also, steer away from tube or strapless dresses; they may not be appropriate for every occasion. Although if you have your heart set on a strapless, you can always use a shrug, shawl or cardigan to cover your shoulders. The LBD should be neutral leaving room for you to accessorize and create the type of look for the occasion. With accessory, shoe and hairstyle changes you should be able to take your LBD to church and out on the town with the girls.

have a tailored look for your upper body as well. There are different jacket options to achieve this look such as a blazer, trench coat, denim jacket or leather jacket. Which ever suits you, keep the color dark or neutral. The jacket should fit snug but still leaving room for a sweater or camisole underneath. These jackets are a good way to dress up your dark denim jeans and a nice blouse. This tailored look is polished and slims the body. The boyfriend fit blazer is a popular option among women. It’s a great fit and has a classy look.

good way to whittle way to those extra pounds. Pencil and a-line skirts are favorable because they create balance in the hips and thighs. Which ever style fits you best remember should be at least knee length to give you the most wears and versatility. The black skirt is a feminine alternate when wearing a suit. Some occasions may require you to wear a skirt and this is when it comes in handy the most. Pair it with a nice blouse and elegant accessories for evening wear or wear it with your crisp white button up and suit jacket for a classy business look.

to sore feet from standing in heels all day, so make sure you have a stylish alternative! In some cases, heels are unnecessary or even inappropriate. As new age business women, we’re on our feet more so it’s completely appropriate to be comfortable, so try wearing a pair of ballerina flats. Some opt for flats decorated with a small bows or jewels at the toe. This is okay as long as they aren’t distracting and still neutral enough to get many wears out of them. These are also ideal for taller women who don’t want to appear tall.

Black Pumps What’s more versatile than a great pair of black pumps? Black pumps add inches to the body and esteem! Elongating the body makes for a slim/slender look. This basic pump should have an appropriate heel height for an interview and the night club. Anything over 4 inches is too high and not versatile enough. Remember, overly sexy is not appropriate for every occasion. Also, it wouldn’t hurt to invest in a nude pair as well. Try matching them closely with your skin color for the elongating effect.

Cardigan Sweater Here is another

versatile item you ought to own. Find a sweater that suits your body type and that you feel confident in. This sweater can be worn casually with a camisole and jeans or you can pair it with your pencil skirt for a classy look for the office. It also comes in handy if you get chilly when wearing your little black dress. The cardigan sweater is an item that assists with the layering look. Remember to purchase it in a neutral color that offers the most versatility. Sweaters that hit at the hips are an attractive cut and help slim the body.

Undergarments Although this is last on the list, it’s the first most important thing you put

on. They say 85% of women are wearing the wrong size bra! In order for your clothes to fit best and look good, you MUST make sure that your body is in order. A good way to make sure you’re “defying gravity” and everything is in place is by purchasing the right undergarments. The right bra, girdle and stockings/tights can reduce the look of pounds and improve posture! Most undergarment or lingerie stores offer free sizing’s so go in and make sure you’re wearing the correct sizes, trust, it makes a big difference!

Debt Ceiling Crisis: The #EpicFail of our Congress

the Conversation

Gionni Carr

I

f you’ve watched any news show on television, the Debt Ceiling was one of the first topics to be discussed. In this article, I will detail what the Debt Ceiling is, how it brought our Congress to shame, and how it affects the average American. So let’s jump right into it shall we! If you were anything like me, before this turned into such a big issue, you had absolutely no clue what the Debt Ceiling was or how much of an impact it could have on our day to day lives. The Debt Ceiling stems from Article I, Section 8 of our U.S. Constitution. What this does is gives our Congress the ability and the power to borrow money on the credit line of the United States. Just imagine this as a credit card owned and used by our Congress. Now the actual “Ceiling” part comes from the Second Liberty Bond Act, which was established in 1917. What this act states is that Congress shall establish an aggregate limit, or “ceiling” on the total amount bonds that we can issue out. Our current Debt Ceiling is $14.3 trillion (yeah I thought the same thing, give me just 1% of that and I would die a happy man). Imagine this scenario as the U.S. having a credit card/credit line in its name. The Debt Ceiling or (credit limit/maximum amount of expenses that could be accrued on the card) would be $14.3 trillion. Well that’s simple enough to understand right? I mean it’s an easy concept that most Americans employ on a daily basis. “You can’t spend more than you can afford to pay back,” is the basis principle here. But for whatever reason, this logic is not recipro-

cated by our government. And then there is the infamous “Debt Ceiling Doomsday” of sorts. On August 2nd, 2011, if the Debt Ceiling was not raised, then the United States would have defaulted on its credit obligations and would have faced severe ramifications. The devastation would have meant that Congress would not have had enough money to pay its bills domestically. This means programs such as Social Security, Medicade, Medicare, etc. would have faced massive cuts. Essentially, our government would have had to pick and choose who got paid, and who didn’t. Although we did not default as a nation, because of our government’s inability to solve this problem, Standard&Poors (1 of 3 Credit Rating Agencies), downgraded our spotless AAA credit rating, to AA+. This is the 1st time that our credit rating has been downgraded since Moody’s assigned us that AAA rating in 1917. This is quite the embarrassment and wake-up call if we ever needed one. Now that our credit rating has dropped, other countries may view the U.S. as a “Financial Risk,” and may

THE CONVERSATION | POLITICS MADE COOL| GIONNI CARR

think twice about lending us money. The ramifications of us losing our AAA rating may lead to rising interest rates on our current Debt of $14.3 trillion. If interest rates increase, this means we will be in even more debt and will have to find quick ways to increase revenue. Just for fun, let’s randomly pick 5% as the interest rate on U.S. debt, any idea of how much 5% of $14.3 trillion is? How about $715 Billion! Insane, I know right lol! Along with losing our AAA rating and not paying our bills, had the U.S. defaulted, the value of the dollar would have been at risk of losing its value. Now ask yourself this question: If the U.S. had defaulted on its financial obligations, who would have been the first “forced volunteers” to assume the burden of creating revenue for our government? If you choose the “Average American” as your answer, Ding Ding Ding, you are correct! This could have meant massive tax increases for Americans, along with increased interest rates from credit card companies and other places. On top of that, the Americans who receive their pay from the government would have been in jeopardy of not receiving their money (which would totally suck). Now that we have a better understanding of what the Debt Ceiling is, let’s examine how Congress totally dropped the ball on this issue. The good ole’ United State Congress. You know, there was a point in time where being a member of Congress meant you were “Representing the best interest of America, and its citizens.” It once was a privilege to get elected by your fellow Americans to represent their best interest in government. Along with that privilege and prestige, came a huge responsibility. Clearly, our elected officials forgot about their responsibility to their constituents and totally dropped the ball on this Debt Ceiling issue. To sum up what happened, I will break down what each party wanted to be included in this Debt Ceiling Legislation and how their lack of compromise negatively impacted our country. Let’s start with the Grand Old Party (GOP), more commonly referred to as the Republicans. These guys and gals are always talking about balancing the budget, cutting spending, making government smaller, no tax increases, so on and so forth. So their great idea for reducing the Debt Ceiling was to implement massive cuts in Non-Discretionary

Spending (spending that is required by law) and in other places. Remember that such programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are included in Non-Discretionary Spending. Ironically, Republicans are primarily a against tax increase, which is viewed as a good revenue stream for our country. Here’s the kicker. Republicans tend to represent some of the “Wealthier Americans” who just so happen to enjoy several tax loopholes and tax breaks, basically not paying their fair share of taxes to America. They also represent the special interest of these major corporations such as Big Oil and Gas companies, just to name a few. These companies get to enjoy the “Bush Tax Cuts,” or very nice tax breaks. Now some of these same companies that enjoy these grand tax breaks are the same companies who outsource American jobs overseas to cut labor cost and save even more money. Essentially, they send jobs away from Americans, pocket the excess savings, and get the benefits of tax breaks all at the same time. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me! Not to mention the “Corporate Jet” loophole that they enjoy. So all in all, the Republicans feel that wealthy Americans and big corporations should not be taxed because they are the one’s creating jobs for the rest of us. They believe if these segments are taxed like the average Americans, they might not have as much incentive to create jobs which will stimulate our economy. I know what you’re thinking, yeah that is pretty STUPID isn’t it. See what really gets me going about their ideology is that they don’t see what the average American goes through on a day to day basis. They don’t understand what it is like for the middle and poor class Americans who have to bear the brunt of taxes, unemployment, etc. But remember when the recession hit a few years ago, and Wall Street and all these other major corporations and banks were going under? Wasn’t it was OUR tax dollars (the middle and poor class) that were used to bail them out of the mess THEY created. WE, had to save an entity that caused our country to fall into a recession because of THIER reckless deals and under the table agreements that made THEM richer. The same corporate giants who were “playing with the fire,” that left this entire country in shambles (and, might I add are currently very rich again and even receiving bonuses), are the ones that the republican party are protecting by standing firm on their “No

THE CONVERSATION | POLITICS MADE COOL| GIONNI CARR

Tax Increases” platform. *Takes Deep Breath* Ok, that was a lot to get off my chest. Now let’s move on to the Democrats. These guys and gals believe in a more balanced approach. They wanted to offset the Debt Ceiling crisis by cutting spending, but counterbalancing that with increasing revenues. Now this approach didn’t seem too bad. But in the interest of fairness, Democrats have, at times, been known to show signs of irresponsibility when it comes to handling financial issues. Republicans accuse Democrats of wanting to borrow more and more money to offset the Debt; in actuality, borrowing more money to pay the bills does result in digging a deeper hole of debt. Democrats feel as if government should provide the means for people to make their own decisions and have the optimal conditions for being successful. They lead the way in providing better schools, safer streets, more jobs, helping finance Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, etc. Now here’s where the Democrats failed. In this Debt Ceiling crisis, the Democrats wanted a guaranteed source of revenue to come from tax increases on the wealthy. Well, they didn’t get it. In fact, the only thing that was guaranteed is there would be massive spending cuts (a victory for Republicans). Here are the voting totals for each chamber of Congress pertaining to the Debt Ceiling Legislation: House of Representatives: Republicans: 174 voting YES, 66 voting NO Democrats: 95 voting YES, 95 voting NO, 4 PRESENT NOT VOTING Total: 269 YES, 161 NO, 4 PRESENT NOT VOTING Total # Needed for House Passage: 216 Senate: Republicans: 28 voting YES, 19 voting NO Democrats: 46 voting YES, 7 voting NO Total: 74 voting YES, 26 voting NO Total needed for Senate Passage: 60 Now let’s quickly outline the important details of the Debt Ceiling Plan: Stage 1:

*Immediate increase of Debt Ceiling by $400 Billion, which shall last up through the month of September. The Debt Ceiling can then be increased by another $500 Billion if Congress approves it, and, even without Congressional approval, President Obama can veto and have it approved. This total Debt Ceiling increase of $900 Billion will be offset by an additional $917 Billion in savings. Stage 2: A “Super Committee” would be created comprising of 12 members of Congress (6 Democrats and 6 Republicans). This committee will have to come up with recommendations on debt reduction steps that total $1.5 trillion due by November 23rd, 2011. Both chambers of Congress will have a mandatory vote on the Super Committee Legislation (without any amendments) by December 23rd, 2011. The Two Possible Outcomes of Stage 2: The first possible outcome would be if both chambers of Congress (both the House of Representatives and the Senate) voted in favor of the Super Committee’s recommendations. President Obama would then have the authority to sign the legislation into law, which would give him the power to raise the Debt Ceiling by an additional $1.5 trillion. The second possible outcome, which is the worst case scenario, would be if both chambers of Congress voted against the Super Committee’s recommendations. If this were to occur, President Obama would still have the power to raise the Debt Ceiling by $1.2 trillion. At this point, what they refer to as the “budget trigger” would come into effect. This budget trigger basically means that there would be mandatory “across the board,” spending cuts. The total amount of these cuts would have to match that initial $1.2 trillion Debt Ceiling increase. This scenario would be very intense and unpopular because the money would come from massive cuts to Defense Spending and Non-Defense Programs. Both Democrats and Republicans do not want to cut spending from our Defense because this is basically taking money away from the very military operations that are keeping us safe and protecting our global interests. Who would want to be responsible

THE CONVERSATION | POLITICS MADE COOL| GIONNI CARR

for not paying the very men and women who put their lives at risk to protect our great nation? Our Democratic President was accused of turning his back on the liberals and conceding to the Republicans. If the two sides didn’t reach an agreement by that August 2nd deadline, President Obama could have evoked the power of the 14th Amendment which stated that he could have “unilaterally” raised the Debt Ceiling by his own authority. Opponents of this deal feel like Obama gave in too early and acted “Cowardly.” But honestly, give the man a break. He worked day and night to get the two sides to compromise on a deal in which everyone gave up something. Although on the front end Republicans got what they wanted at the expense of the Democrats, there is always the possibility that the Super Committee will come up with a much more fair and bi-partisan solution in which we can cut spending and increase revenue by imposing fair tax increases on wealthy America. No matter which side you are on or what you believe in, it is abundantly clear that our Congress should no longer play “Russian Roulette” with our economy. Waiting until the day of to come up with a deal showed a lack of leadership and an unwillingness to compromise by all parties involved. This lack of bi-partisanship led our stock markets to drop drastically and caused unwanted negative attention towards the U.S. Our Congress embarrassed us and furthermore, set the worst example of teamwork you could ever imagine. I find it rather ironic these people are supposed to all be leaders, yet acted in no such manner. The only certainty you can take away from this entire process is that our Congress cares more about their own self-interests and re-elections, than they do about the safety and stability of this nation. The only bright spot about this entire process is the special moment when Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords came into the House Chambers and casted her vote. To refresh your memories, Gabrielle Giffords was 1 of 19 people shot on January 8th, 2011 near Tucson, Arizona. She was shot in the head at point blank range during a public meeting with her constituents. Seeing her remarkable recovery and her voting in this critical process showed her courage and dedication towards our country.

It angers me how her fellow members of Congress took so much for granted during this process and forgot about why they were elected to Congress in the first place. There is, however, irony to be found in all of this. As of July 22nd, 2011, there was an estimated $2.9 trillion lost in equities because of this Debt Ceiling crisis. Had the Republicans agreed to a slight increase in taxes, that money would have never been lost. Also, consider that on August 8th, 2011, the DOW closed 634 points lower than where it opened that day. This marks the lowest point that the DOW has closed at since November of 2010. Creditors and investors are so skeptical of the halfbaked plan that Congress put together, that they are pulling their money out of the markets and selling fast due to so much uncertainty. Although every American who has investments in the stock market are feeling the pressures of their financial portfolio collapse, it was the wealthiest of Americans who were hit the hardest because they have more invested. So our Congressed passed up the opportunity to compromise on the front end, only to cost everyone more on the back end. Job well done!!! Although this process was very messy, uncoordinated, and embarrassing, this is the government that we are stuck with until another election cycle!

hat is your full name and what do you do? My name is Ash’Cash and I am an Entrepreneur, Motivational Speaker, and the author of Mind Right, Money Right: 10 Laws of Financial Freedom. I run a business management and consulting firm called the Ash Cash Management Group, LLC (AshCashMgmt.com) and we specialize inbusiness and personal financial management services for established and up-and-coming professionals. Some of our services include Business Consultation, Artist & Business Management, Marketing Plan Development, Business Plan Creation, & Sponsorship Packages. I am alsoa Personal Finance Expert & contributing writer for Don-Diva Magazine, Concrete Magazine, and MSNBC affiliate website TheGrio.com. I speak frequently at different colleges around the country and work with a few city agencies and organizations to teach financial literacy to undeserved, at risk, and incarcerated youth. How did you end up doing what you do today? Tell us about your background. I was born and raised in a single parent household in the St. Nicholas projects in Harlem. Growing up society had most of us believe that we were either going to be dead or in jail by the age of twentyfive. Somehow through faith, family support, hard work and sacrifice I was able to avoid both. With more than ten years of banking experience, I was able to work my way up the ranks from teller to personal banker, private banker & branch manager. I became a VP at the largest financial institution in the world (JP Morgan Chase Bank) at the age of twenty-four. Throughout my career I managed a book of 400

mass affluent clients with assets ranging from $100K-$22MM, coached and trained over 100 sales professionals, opened and managed six branches and brought in almost $90MM in deposits. Staying true to my values I took a step back and left the big bank to better help my community and became an Assistant Vice President at the largest African-American/Caribbean operated bank in the country (Carver Federal Savings Bank). During my time at Carver, I ran the main office in Harlem controlling over $180 million in deposits. With what I was able to accomplish in such a short amount of time I believe that my purpose in life is greater than me! Most of my friends are either dead, in jail or have some type of criminal background; God spared me for a reason. I could have easily become any of my friends so I realize now that I must be of service and help those who can still be saved! What inspires you to work with our community on matters of financial literacy? Jay-Z once said "There's much bigger issues in the world, I know; But I first had to take care the world I know!" That's exactly how I feel. I am product of this environment and the difference between those who are successful and those who are not is simply access to knowledge and the application of that knowledge. In layman's terms "If you knew better you'll do better"... and while that might not be true 100% of the time, I do believe that the more we see people of our same background rise to places we never thought possible, the more chances we have to change our circumstance. Financial literacy is what I know and with working with other classes of people I realize that if we changed how we managed our money,

THE CONVERSATION | INTERVIEW | ASH’CASH

If we knew the difference between assets and liabilities, If we learned how to prioritize and put the first things first then most of the issues that we go through as a people would either diminish or be non-existent. What are some of the biggest problems you see in the community as it pertains to money? You'll notice that I love using quotes so here's another... Will Smith once said "We spend money we don't have to buy things we don't need to impress people we don't like." That sums up our biggest problem in a nutshell. As a people we are so used to not having money that we can't really grasp the concept of saving for the future and spending our money wisely. Couple that with the fact that a lot of us have low self-esteem so we use material things to make us feel better. Some of us would rather spend money on cars, jewelry, and clothes than to become homeowners, save for emergencies or fix our credit. Our issues are deeply rooted and they become a cycle that is passed down from generation to generation making it more difficult to break. The good news is that there's a movement going on; people are starting to wake up and take more responsibility. We are seeing more of our people excel in positions that in the past didn't seem possible. This movement is what is spearheading the paradigm change and forcing many of us to put the first things first. Tell us about your book and why people should read it? 'Mind Right, Money Right: 10 Laws of Financial Freedom,' is a book designed to teach you how to effectively manage your personal finances. It shows you how with the right mental attitude and laser sharp focus, you can have anything you desire in life. It's an easy to read book that anyone, at any level, can understand. This book is especially geared towards anyone who is tired of having a dependency on money and is ready to take some practical steps in order to correct it. This is our generation's 'Think and Grow Rich.' Starting with the power of self confidence the book discusses in detail how having a positive mental attitude, paying yourself first, budgeting and planning for the future are all ways to immediately change your financial situation. 'Mind Right, Money Right' demonstrates how your mind set plays a tremendous role in creating financial abundance. By using examples of successful people such as Sean Combs, Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey, THE CONVERSATION | INTERVIEW | ASH’CASH

Shawn Carter, Curtis Jackson, Chris Lighty and many others, the reader is given a real life account of how these laws have worked for others and how it can work for them. It's important to point out that the title is 'Mind Right, Money Right' and not the other way around. Once we are able to control the way we look at money, the way we feel about money and the way we think about money, then it will become easier for us to keep and grow our money...To sum it up simply: This book will change your life! Is there anything else you'd like to share with the FetchEdge audience? Absolutely! First I would like to thank you for giving me the platform to speak to your audience about financial literacy. This magazine is very inspirational and this voice is definitely needed and appreciated in our community. To the FetchEdge Audience, I want to remind you that we are still recovering from one of the worst economic meltdowns in our nations history. With bankruptcies, foreclosures and unemployment still high many of us are still afraid of what the future holds! Now is the time to make a decision! We can either sit back and allow fear to stop us from going after our dreams or we can look fear straight in the face and say, “This is my time!!” Studies show that many successful businesses have been started during bad economic times and continue to do well way after. Burger King, FedEx, Microsoft, CNN, and MTV are all examples of such companies. Hard times can either be the ending point or the starting point. The Choice is ours and we have no excuse! Let's all make the conscious effort to begin to take care of our responsibilities and never let anything or anyone hold us back! The world is ours! Let's make sure we are taking what we deserve!! Nowadays you need credit for everything! To find an apartment, to rent a car, to open a bank account, even to get a job!! The problem is that some of us have not been properly trained to manage credit so we mess it up at such an early age and spend a very long time trying to get it right. Credit can be a gift or a curse! Assuming its now a curse lets talk about some ways to get it together. In order to get where you going you have to know where you are. The first step in fixing your credit is to Get Your Credit Report. Most states allow you to get a free credit report once a year by going to www.AnnualCreditReport.com. If you would like to know what your score is then you can purchase it from one of the three major credit bureaus, which are Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. Secondly you need to review for discrepancies. In today’s age of technology where identity theft happens more often than not, it is imperative that you check your credit report for fraud or discrepancies at least twice a year. Make sure you are not paying for someone else’s bad habits. If you do happen to see

840 HIGH

something on your credit report that quite doesn’t belong there than you must notify the proper credit bureaus as soon as possible. By law they have 30 days from the date they receive your dispute to resolve it.. You also need to get rid of bad debt! If you know you may have issues paying a debt in the near future make sure you call your creditors first and set up some type of payment arrangement. They are always willing to negotiate debt because they rather get something than nothing. Also it is a great idea to start getting rid of the cards that you no longer use starting with the ones that have the least credit history. Creditors do not want to see too much credit outstanding. Lastly you must begin to build good credit by showing creditors that you are stable and can pay your bills on time. The way the credit games goes is that creditors give money to people they think don’t need it . With this in mine it is important to have low usage on your revolving credit accounts. As a simple rule of thump you should never go over 20% usage which equates to $20 for every $100 of credit.

Get Prissy: The Problem with Patience

the Conversation

Jennifer Elise

N

one of the people I admire—or any of those on the Forbes list—sat around hoping for the magic solution. What they all did instead was get impatient. Bill Gates quickly abandoned his collegiate dreams when the idea for Microsoft presented itself. P. Diddy hustled his way through Howard and into Biggie Smalls’ camp. Oprah abandoned her entire life in Nashville and went searching for her opportunity. They, and many others like them, got serious about success. When things got real, they quickly got with it. They didn’t sit around waiting for perfect—they snatched opportunity as soon as they saw it. Every innovative thing that has ever changed the world happened because of impatience. That’s the mindset we must developeloquently summarized by Curtis Jackson: “I got alotta living to do before I die, and I ain’t got time to waste.” Patience is a gateway drug for most of us—it sends us straight to complacence. Once we reach the inevitable crossroads where more expertise is needed, we usually decide to just stop. And wait. And find something else to do in the meanwhile. Then we assign responsibility for it to someone else (“I’m putting it in Jesus’s hands,” anyone?) and absolve ourselves of the trouble. I am not saying that patience serves no purpose, because it does. We have to be patient when we’re in line, when we’re waiting on Ye’s new album, and when we’re talking to our simple coworkers who just never seem to get it. But aside from those minor inconveniences, I just can’t speak too highly of patience.

There is a legitimate time in each chapter of our lives—after we’ve exhausted every option—where we are to wait for direction from our Higher Power (be it God, Jesus, Allah, Buddha, or Fate). Most of the time, however, we have not reached this point. We have just gotten tired, frustrated, or jaded. In seeking validation of our plight, we turn to our well-meaning loved ones who tell us precisely what we don’t need to hear—Just wait. It’ll come to you. More often than not, the people telling us to be patient are those waiting right there with us, for whatever it is they need to get started. They either really believe this tired ideal, or they just want us to keep them company as they wait their lives away. Whatever the motivation, I’m over it. You should get over it, too. In his, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” the incomparable Dr. Seuss describes in perfect detail how some of us make it to the proverbial fork in the road—that moment in our lives where who we are and who we desire to be can no longer be one in the same. You can get so confused/ that you’ll start in to race/ down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace/ and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space,/ headed, I fear, toward a most useless place./ The Waiting Place…for people just waiting./ I refuse to live my life in The Waiting Place. I certainly hope you do as well.
