Welcome, Wamkelekile, Fàilte! “Flowering of the Human Spirit” In 1947, after the devastation of war, the Edinburgh international Festival was conceived to ‘provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit’. The Festival of Spirituality and Peace seeks to reawaken this heartfelt vision for people who, after 9/11, want to work together for a peaceful future.
Director’s Welcome Edinburgh International Festival is a post-war peace festival. The Festival of Spirituality and Peace is a post 9/11 peace festival. Every time we remember the atrocities that are behind us, we risk forgetting (for a split second) the hope and vision that surrounds current day Edinburgh: a developed city, a city at peace with its neighbours and blessed with the possibility to celebrate life through numerous festivals. These are great privileges. With them comes opportunity. There is abundant opportunity to Cooperate and Collaborate, developing new ideas in arts, sciences and matters of the heart. We have many expressions of healthy Competition that mould and shape our work in the world. When these three meet we realise... “We don’t have to agree – but it doesn’t need to be a problem” 24 conversations make the backbone of this year’s Festival exploring war, finance, ethics, Syria, Bosnia 20 years on, Poland - Scotland relations, big business, little business, women in leadership, women in religion, men and morality and our friend death. See listing on page 5. Creating the soul of the Festival are the amazing array of activities going on in St John’s and throughout the city. Hear the vibrant Soweto Entsha sing the roof off, learn new skills in the Henna workshop, gorge on cake and culture at our Intercake
events, dance the night away at The Last Tango in Edinburgh, be compelled by the drama of Dirty Paki Lingerie, and be swept away by Rhapsody of Indian Melodies and much, much more. If all this is too much for you, then our very own oasis in the midst of the bustling city can help. The Persian Tent Cafe is back to build on the successes of last year. In the midst of exotic fragrances and sumptuous refreshments it is a great place to water your camel and imagine yourself a million miles away...

Provost’s Welcome The Lord Provost proudly welcomes visitors and communities of Edinburgh to The Festival of Spirituality and Peace. Edinburgh is a city committed to peace and nowhere is this more evident than in the recently established partnership of 33 civil society and faith-based organisations within The Edinburgh Peace Initiative. “Edinburgh’s Festival of Spirituality and Peace provides an ideal opportunity to explore ‘peace’ in its many senses: it is much more than the absence of war and exists at individual, community, national, international and global levels. It is also inherently about developing cultures of non-violence – whether in the Edinburgh or in wider contexts.”

Welcome In 2012 we will mark the UN International Year of Co-operatives by taking as our theme ‘Co-operation for Change’ – looking at the dynamics of human nature. Are human beings essentially competitive or co-operative, or does it depend on the circumstances? And what makes the difference? There is some evidence that in extreme circumstances, people pull together. There is evidence too that businesses organised as co-operative or as employee partnerships fare better - but for whom? And in the world of politics, do we need the crude cut and thrust of adversarialism to ensure the best outcome in the battle of ideas? Is consensus a path to mediocrity? Co-operation is certainly not easy and it is not the same as agreement. It implies a deliberate commitment to working together. Does peace depends on that act of will?

CHARITY SUPPORT The Festival of Spirituality and Peace is a Scottish registered charity dedicated to supporting those with a practical vision for peace. Each year we raise money for selected humanitarian causes through a 50p ticket surcharge. This year we will split all money raised in this way between L’Arche Edinburgh and Mama Amelia’s Creche Upgrade in Cape Town.

Festival Charities for 2012 L’ARCHE EDINBURGH L’Arche is an international federation of communities where people with and without learning disabilities share life together, in a small homely setting, in the style of an extended family. L’Arche Edinburgh was established 21 years ago. There are three L’Arche houses in the city. L’Arche is asking friends and well-wishers for help in raising enough money to build a fourth, which will be for people whose support needs are becoming more complex and more substantial with age. L’Arche wants to be able to offer people a home for life, so that they never need to move on, as they age. About half of the funds needed have been raised. Donations to help meet the balance will be most gratefully received. L’Arche was founded in France by a Canadian,
Shack to Chic is an intermediate intervention created by SASDI to significantly improve children’s learning environment. The pilot project is Mama Amelia’s Sakhumzi Creche in the township of Mfuleni, Cape Town. The main aims of Shack to Chic are to provide the children with safe, fire-proof classrooms conducive to learning, as well as to ensure the centre is capable of registration as an ECD centre with the local department of social development because this grants access to daily subsidies for the children. The money raised by the Festival will enable SASDI to erect much-needed ablution facilities for the children and teachers.

In the past five years we’ve seen the collapse of Northern Rock, the credit crunch, the Ryan Report on abuse in the Catholic Church, MP’s expense scandals, News of the World phone hacking, Eurozone bailouts and what many believe to be a dismantling of the NHS in England and Wales. Most of our society’s institutions and organisations appear to be very ill. Joette Thomas from the Craighead Institute in Glasgow engages Dr Rosie Ilett, Healthcare Manager, and Ewan Kelly, Programme Director for Healthcare Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care, NHS Education for Scotland.
The barriers that prevent women reaching positions of leadership are falling. What makes women inspirational leaders? What are the essential strengths of women leaders in the largely male dominated worlds of business, government and Church?
Our brain filters and edits information setting up blind-spots that we choose to perpetuate making our ignorance contrived and deliberate. What makes us prefer ignorance? What are we so afraid of? What effect does this have on our churches, businesses, military and personal relationships?

What is happening on the ground in Afghanistan? Journalists, doctors and aid workers face community issues in attempts to liberate Afghan women from oppression and grow peace. Why are they there? How does it help? The Afghan war needs another face. See the war from a different perspective, the perspective of women and peacemakers.
Shared history, collaboration and friendship between Poland and Scotland dates back to the 15th century. Centuries of co-operation between the two nations have been preserved on pages of history, in pieces of art and in personal memories. Richard Demarco, CBE, artist and promoter of the visual and performing arts, will share his memories and thoughts on the relationship between the Poles and the Scots.

Charles Handy describes a group of ‘acorn’ or tiny businesses near where he lives in Norfolk. These people are fiercely independent but gather together for breakfast every Friday to support and encourage each other. This is their way to balance independence with companionship and connection to others. What is yours? Join Charles Handy, social philosopher, author, broadcaster and former Professor at London Business School. The conversation will use the device of ‘The Empty Chair’. There will be three chairs on the platform. Charles will occupy the middle one and invite someone to join him in conversation, sitting in one of the chairs beside him. The third chair is empty. As soon as someone else wants to continue the conversation on the same or different topic, he or she comes and sits in the third, or empty, chair. This is the signal to the preceding conversationalist to close and depart, leaving another empty chair awaiting the next occupant. In this way there is a continuing series of conversations, to all of which the wider audience is privy.

Territorial, ethnic, political and religious factors all played a part in the conflict, and remain active in the region, but attempts at peacemaking and reconciliation have been made by both political and religious actors. In the light of the 20th anniversary of the start of the Bosnian War, Mustafa Cerić, the Grand Mufti of Bosnia and Herzegovina; Revd Donald Reeves, the Director of the Soul of Europe; and Professor Hugh Goddard, Director of the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World, will discuss the legacy of the conflict, and the role of faith and community initiatives in bringing about healing. Death and funeral traditions play a significant role in African culture; No Time to Die is Ampaw’s contribution to passing the tradition onto the next generation. Ampaw, in only his third feature in a quartercentury, fully explores the colour, absurdity and acceptance of social ritual in this farcical film.

Celebrated Senegalese director Ousmane Sembene once again demonstrates the power of his creative imagination and his ability to utilise cinema effectively as a means of exploring the complexities of social, political and cultural relationships within the African context. In Guelwaar, which is based on a true story, the body of a Christian activist is mistakenly delivered to Muslims who bury him in a Muslim cemetery according to the teachings of Islam. When the error is discovered, however, the Christians seek to recover ‘their’ body.

One of the oldest sacred music traditions of the world, the Kirtan calland-response chanting genre comes from India. Using ancient Sanskrit mantras to the accompaniment of instruments Kirtan calls upon sacred energies which effortlessly lift us into a clear, joyous state, invoking peacefulness and bringing us back to the center of our being.

An evening of songs and instrumental music in response to different people’s experiences of walking through mountainous landscapes. We hope to lead you through all kinds of wonderful, sad, mysterious, joyful and beautiful musical atmospheres, just as the weather and climate leads us into different atmospheres and situations when we are walking in the hills. The concert is dedicated to Lulu Black and her love for the mountains.
Explore Asian and Arabic dance forms! This workshop will teach you basic movements and postures, which will be incorporated into a small dance piece and accompanied by live musicians! Inspired by Korean, Indonesian, Indian and Middle Eastern movement. Open to all ages, abilities and genders.

Available for those of all faiths and none, it is given by members of The National Federation of Spiritual Healers (NFSH), Scotland, and other recognised healing organisations. Relaxing, gentle and safe. Try it for yourself. The healing is free, but donations towards Festival costs would be gratefully appreciated.
Children can be masters of the ‘big questions’ that parents sometime struggle to cope with. These informal discussions provide an opportunity to explore how we help children develop their awareness of the spiritual and grow as spiritual beings without feeling the need to give them all the ‘answers’! Aimed specifically at adults, the discussions run at the same time as our storytelling sessions for children.

Working first in local government, then university administration and now song writing, Alan came to know Scotland better through his travels and “became even more Scottish” as a result. A joyful mixture of songs, readings, photos and painting.
The Tagore Centre UK is proud to present a unique musical afternoon with a young team trained under Smt. Chandrima Misra, a Hindustani Classical Vocalist and Pt. Rajkumar Misra, the Tabla maestro. The Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, combined ancient Indian Raagas in his poetry. This blend of spirituality and musical excellence will be explored with vocal melodies showcasing improvisations of the rhythmic cycles.

Mairi Campbell is one of Scotland’s finest and most respected musicians. Awards include ‘Scots Singer of the Year’, ‘Female musician of the year’ ‘Tutor of the year’ and ‘Burnsong’ winner. This concert features Mairi’s soundings, (improvised viola and voice) which draws on her immediate surroundings and songs from her new album.
Indepen-dance presents Submerge, a beautiful duet by two of the company’s principal dancers - Kelly McCartney and Neil Price. Choreographed by the UK’s Leading Integrated Dance Company StopGAP, this piece sees the two dancers glide and guide each other across the floor, seemingly to aquaplane to a filmic soundtrack. As the music crescendos the couple dance, dive and dissolve into one and other. In revealing their commitment to each other they discover their underwater dance has become a shimmering reflection of one and other.
Developed specifically for the space, Northern Ireland based artist Tommy Barr is exhibiting in the Chapel at St John’s. The exhibition seeks to create a sense of intimate calm at the heart of the busy Festival. The paintings reference ancient trees and stones (dolmens) which have been considered sacred or magical at some time in our history.
Curated by Richard Demarco and Terry Ann Newman, the exhibition entitled ‘Scotland in Poland: Poland in Scotland’ consists of drawings, paintings or collages inspired by the theme of the two symbols defining the best image of both countries – the images of their national patrons: St. Andrew of Scotland: The Black Madonna of Poland.

The real-life story of a mother who battled for almost a century against the authoritarian regimes of Stalin, the Shah of Iran and the malignant international forces of occupation and exploitation in the East, eventually finding herself a serene and peaceful resting place beside her children in Turkey.
Led by Colombian multiinstrumentalist and composer Anthar Kharana, whose majestic vocals range from mellow femininity to growled mongolian throat-song, and weaving the stunning richness of traditional gaitas (Colombian Flutes) and driving tambores percussion with bouzouki, cajon and traverse flute, this is the exhilaratingly brilliant soundscape of Colombia.
The history of Scotland has expanded to include the Caribbean. Yet it is not widely known that most Jamaicans have family connections with Scotland. Edinburgh and Glasgow have strong historical links with Jamaica. This association extended from ordinary houses in Edinburgh to grand landmarks such as the Necropolis and the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow. This lecture by Professor Geoff Palmer will surprise and enlighten.

How do we create the dependable, liberated, and highly evolved men needed in our local communities to be compelling examples required for boys and young men to grow up into selfassured but non-abusive men? Through shared story, discussion and inter-active dialogue, Michael Boyle, founder of a Abandofbrothers, shares one answer to this question in their creation of a rites of passage community that supports and allows men to make a meaningful difference in the lives of local youth.
Invention – Melody – Brilliance – Calm – Confidence – Inner Peace. The Polish composer Frederick Chopin had them all. Colin Kingsley, a pianist longestablished in Edinburgh, will give a recital to display Chopin’s style, quality and atmosphere, plus a few items from his contemporaries and his background influences, Bach and Mozart. Performed in the beautiful setting of the Edinburgh Society of Musicians.

A multimedia talk/presentation by Mike Hall. Join us on a Magical Mystery Tour that travels back through time. You will stop off at Strawberry fields, ‘The Ace of Spades’ and Magical Pagodas to arrive at a destination where you can be spiritually free. Mike is currently President of The Edinburgh Theosophical Society. He has two plays professionally performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
This half-day course will provide an introduction to bread baking for complete beginners. The centrepiece is a specially commissioned sculpture created by British artist Mel Howse. Kathy Galloway, Head of Christian Aid Scotland, will be guest preacher at the Cathedral Festival Eucharist, 10.30am, Sunday 19 August.
