Welcome to the second edition of Adelaide French Festival, a celebration of creativity and collaboration between France and Australia. French culture has helped shape the modern world and, enriched by its great ethnic diversity, France continues to be a leading creative powerhouse. To align with the State’s critical relationship with Brittany, Adelaide Festival Centre has been working closely with local government, arts and tourism officials in Brittany to bring a Breton flavour to the 2019 French Festival. South Australia and France share a friendly association dating back to the peaceful meeting in 1802 of Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin at Encounter Bay. Our maritime connection has grown into a powerful economic partnership as we prepare to build the next generation of Australian Defence Force submarines in Adelaide. We could not build this relationship with France without including a celebration of the arts of this treasured European culture. The South Australian Government is pleased to support the second edition of Adelaide French Festival, showcasing a weekend of music, theatre, dance, art, food and family fun. I look forward to celebrating all things French, particularly those that focus on the unique culture of Brittany, our sister region in France. The program will feature an eclectic program of music, theatre, dance, food, wine, art, fashion and film, including a number of exclusive performances just for Adelaide. As the friendship and connections between South Australia and France grow stronger, I am delighted the 2019 Adelaide French Festival will have a focus on the beautiful region of Brittany. The festival will celebrate the rich and diverse culture of France, and will give audiences a taste of Brittany through our wonderful food, fashion, visual arts, and music. GLAZ MUSIC Glaz Music is a partnership of more than 20 musicians, producers, agents and other companies in Brittany which aims to develop local artists and the music industry on an international scale. Adelaide French Festival 2019 presents Glaz Music artists including Jesse Lucas, Ellie James and French Miracle Tour featuring LadyLike Lily and The Midnight Revolution.

AN EXPLORATION OF LOVE ACROSS CULTURES A fusion of hip-hop and contemporary dance created by the duo Wang Ramirez; a couple onstage and off. French with Spanish origins, Sébastien Ramirez crosses choreographic paths with Honji Wang, born in Frankfurt to Korean parents. Together, they tackle Monchichi as they construct their life together – in perfect balance between masculine and feminine. Monchichi is a piece full of humour and self-deprecation, a love story in different languages.

A TRIP TO THE MOON A FILM AND LIVE MUSIC MASHUP French illusionist and film director Georges Méliès was a pioneer of special effects at the turn of the twentieth century. Astounding, joyous and often surreal, Méliès’ short films revolutionised the early days of cinema through his whimsical approach and development of new techniques. THE VOLLARD SUITE The Vollard Suite is Pablo Picasso’s most celebrated series of etchings. Comprised of 100 works and produced between 1930 and 1937, the suite represents a critical point in Picasso’s career and contains many of the abiding themes in his work, including his self-representation as the minotaur. The Suite was made in Paris at the Château de Boisgeloup – a country property near Paris acquired by him in 1930. The film Blood of a Poet (1930) by Picasso’s friend and collaborator, Jean Cocteau, will be screened alongside the exhibition.
