WELCOME

Welcome to Adelaide’s favourite winter festival, in its nineteenth year. This year’s festival will take you some place new. With Aladdin and The Book of Mormon in the Festival Theatre and Her Majesty’s Theatre undergoing spectacular redevelopment, Julia and the team will deliver a transformed Adelaide Cabaret Festival. You will love their inventiveness and creativity and I look forward to sharing new festival experiences with all of you. Many thanks to the Government of South Australia and our loyal partners and patrons – our valuable allies. I also thank the staff and volunteers and congratulate all the artists – we look forward to the celebration!

South Australians are fortunate to have an abundance of art and culture right here at home. Adelaide Festival Centre produces festivals all year round and the Government of South Australia is proud to support their award-winning Adelaide Cabaret Festival. I congratulate Julia Zemiro and the festival team on this year’s program. There are more than 60 shows including 18 Adelaide, 6 Australian, and 16 world premieres. There are also 17 Adelaide exclusives including Ute Lemper’s only Australian performance – a real coup for Adelaide. Adelaide Cabaret Festival shines a light on our city and our state each June and I look forward to seeing you there.

Douglas Gautier AM

The Hon Steven Marshall MP

CEO & Artistic Director Adelaide Festival Centre

Premier of South Australia

Adelaide Cabaret Festival is produced and held on Kaurna land. We respect Kaurna ancestors and elders past, present, and emerging as the traditional custodians of the Adelaide Plains. We honour their cultural and spiritual relationship with their country and we do so in the spirit of reconciliation.

“When the audience comes in, it changes the temperature of what you’ve written.” Stephen Sondheim

We devour entertainment now. We binge. I wonder how that affects us as theatre watchers? The 70 minute cabaret format helps short attention spans, sure. But are we as invested? We have created little worlds this year that we hope will seduce you to engage with the people around you, the performers on stage, the foyers, the bars, and then the greater community as you go out and share your experience. Mes amis, there’s change. The Thebarton Theatre. No galas. No cabaret dinner. The late night club moves to the Famous Spiegeltent. The Banquet Room is now The Blue Room. The Wintergarden is gone and the QBE Cabaret Lounge is the place to meet; to come together. I want to thank the cabaret team in the office and the crew of the Festival Centre for their enthusiasm and skill in making this happen. I am beyond inspired and energised by the artists in our festival this year and we’ve chosen a different way for you to find them: our ‘if you love…’ guide will move you to think less about cabaret categories and more about following a feeling. Be the first in your group to find THAT show you all need to see. There will be immersion. Relish this opportunity! Cabaret has always been about breaking the fourth wall. The Swell Mob take it one step further. The melancholy enveloping this festival is that our leading light Frank Ford is not with us. His presence is in every part of this Festival Centre precinct. He has left a legacy of support that is so generous and we are proud to announce his very first annual grant supports UNSUNG. As an audience member I love it when the house lights go down and, in the darkness, I am transported as the stage lights come up. In honour of Frank, on the first night of the festival we will switch on a light to burn brightly over 16 nights. So. This is a call to action: Dress up. Look for the unexpected in yourself. See something you would NEVER see. Do it. There’s no time to waste.

JULIA ZEMIRO

Artistic Director Adelaide Cabaret Festival

IN MEMORIAM Frank Ford was a powerhouse of the arts in South Australia. A pivotal figure in the birth of Adelaide Cabaret Festival 19 years ago, Frank Ford championed whole-heartedly this beloved festival to become the largest of its kind in the world, charming artists and audiences for the best part of two decades. Frank loved sharing challenging and exciting experiences with audiences and that legacy ripples throughout the festival. His gift of the Frank Ford Commissioning Award, which provides $20,000 a year towards the creation of new works by South Australian artists will continue to help mentor and nurture emerging cabaret talent for years to come. We dedicate the 2019 festival and all those to come, to his memory and hope you will enjoy this festival with Frank in your thoughts and hearts.

UTE LEMPER RENDEZVOUS WITH MARLENE

A musical journey through time Global star Ute Lemper creates magic on stage re-living a three-hour telephone exchange she had with Marlene Dietrich in 1988. Back then, amongst the lights of Paris, Lemper’s extraordinary career was just beginning as Dietrich looked back on a long, fulfilled life of movies, music, love stories and stardom. What a secret gift to hear Marlene’s love for poet Rilke, her complicated relationship with Germany, her sorrow and her fascinations. In this stunning show, Ute tells us Marlene’s story, along with singing her fabulous songs from all the chapters of her life, from the Berlin cabaret years to her fabulous Burt Bacharach collaborations.

Nancy And Beth is the punk/vaudeville heart-child of Megan Mullally (Will & Grace, Parks and Recreation) and Stephanie Hunt (Friday Night Lights, Californication), who sing songs while dancing and wearing matching costumes. Yes, matching costumes, and they’re heading our way to sing and dance up a storm. Each performance is a fully choreographed, nonscripted, tongue-in-cheek experience with a combination of psychic twinship, childlike enthusiasm, rigorous preparation of songs, and zero preparation of what happens in between. Megan and Stephanie, and the five dollfaces that back them up, have created a musical outfit that is celebratory, surprising, sweet, tuneful, eyecatching, thought-provoking and amusing.

“There are moments in the theatre when you lean forward in your seat with shivers racing down the spine, and realise there is nowhere on God’s earth you’d rather be.” The Telegraph in praise of the West End production

The icon lives on Judy Garland, her fifth husband-cum-manager, Mickey Deans, and her longtime accompanist, Anthony, check into The Ritz Hotel in London. With her reputation in tatters, Judy prepares for a five-week run of shows at London’s Talk of the Town nightclub. But as opening night nears and the pressures of fame bear down harder than ever, her world slowly begins to fall apart. Telling the story of Judy Garland’s fabled last days, Peter Quilter’s worldwide smash hit End of the Rainbow tears down the bright lights of Hollywood myth to reveal an enthralling tale of passion and manipulation. Musical theatre icon Helen Dallimore (Wicked, Legally Blonde The Musical) plays the Hollywood legend in all of her fragile and manic glory. This unmissable performance will bring the beauty, complexity and music of Garland to the stage once more.

THE MUSICAL LIFE OF CHET BAKER The musical story of the James Dean of Jazz and West Coast Cool Prolific Australian trumpeter, singer and composer/arranger Roscoe James Irwin (The Cat Empire, The Bamboos), presents a hauntingly beautiful journey through the sounds and songs of one of the most revered, yet tragic figures in popular jazz history. Joined by jazz trio and string orchestra, Irwin will present his own re-workings of Baker’s classic material, with all the cinematic romance, heartbreak, and soul of 1950’s California.

THE HOT SARDINES Quality is timeless. Just ask New York-based jazz ensemble The Hot Sardines. Fuelled by the belief that classic jazz feeds the heart and soul, the musos are on a mission to make old sounds new again. Think brassy horn arrangements, rollicking piano melodies, and a chanteuse whose vocals transport you to a time when Big Apple speakeasies, Parisian cabarets and New Orleans jazz halls were all the rage. Direct from the Newport Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, sold out gigs in New York City’s Bowery Ballroom and Joe’s Pub, The Hot Sardines are hot stuff.

Armed with her extraordinary voice and a group of talented young musicians, Zygier brings her American Songbook repertoire to the 21st century. It’s like stepping back in time.

Hosted by fearmongers Dan Ilic (Hungry Beast) and Lewis Hobba (Triple J) and featuring music from ARIA winning comedy duo Bridie Connell and Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd (Tonightly with Tom Ballard) with DJ Dylabolical (The Chaser), the cast will be joined by special guest panelists. Forget the fearmongering from mainstream media, A Rational Fear tells you what you should really be scared of.

Pulling forgotten women out of the sidelines and into Australian music history In celebration of a defiant act that changed a nation, Amelia Ryan and Libby O’Donovan join forces to tell the story of our female singers of the 1960s. An uplifting, raucous and nostalgic musical soundtrack inspired by a summer’s day in 1965 when two women walked into the Regatta Hotel, calmly chained themselves to the public bar, and asked for a beer. The act inspired future generations of Australian female pop and rock icons. Come hear their songs.

However, just like John Farnham, she keeps coming back to do it for the last time – again. F E AT H E R S , F I S H N E T S A N D FRINGES: COSTUMES FROM CABARET (THE MUSICAL), 2003

Quartet Bar SAT 22, 3pm

Festival Theatre Foyer 7 – 23 June

Historically, it could be argued, cabaret was a rallying call: a place where songs, poems, stories and skits could serve as a satirical weapon for criticism and protest. Does it still? In what new ways is it keeping up the fight? Or is it just a place to sing, get drunk and forget? And why not?! Join festival artists on a journey on which we may discover cabaret needs a revolution.

Willkommen, bienvenue, WELCOME! The original costumes for Cabaret (the musical) were so risqué that audiences were shocked. Gender bending characters and tawdry chorus in the grubby glamour of the Kit Kat Klub showed plenty of skin in shabby lingerie, suspenders, torn fishnets, corsets, feather boas and bowler hats. This lewd visual style and costuming is now synonymous with any production of Cabaret. Admire the wicked costumes from Cabaret starring Rachael Beck as Sally Bowles and Todd McKenny as Emcee which premiered at Festival Theatre in 2003. Costumes designed by William Ivey Long based on the original production by Sam Mendes. Cabaret was produced by, and costumes were donated by, IMG and Barry & Fran Weissler.
