nce again it’s on!! The5Twenty Magazine is back. Yes I know, we took forever right? Well I have only one thing to tell you...LIFE (kinda like last time). And member that team I was talking about last time? Yeah, that didn’t work out either. So where does that leave us? It leaves us right here, right now! I’m not the kind of person to dwell on the past. I’m proud to and will continue to bring you some of the city’s best and upcoming artists to the forefront using this platform and tell their story and show Tucson their art.

ut this time I’m not finally alone. You may or may not have heard about my new partner Miss Shana Gegantoca. If not, read more about her in the pages of this mag. You’d have to be oblivious to whats going on in the hip hop scene and not have either seen her or heard of her. Lets just say she’s definitely a positive addition to the mag and we look forward to bringing you twice the content from here on out.

o what else is new? We switched up the website a bit. We use to have it set up through Wix but we switched to Wordpress so we can add better functionality and also make it mobile friendly. Also new on our website is our 5Twenty PartnAZ slide show and section where we place the logos on the homepage, front and center for all our 5Twenty advertisers. business called kAZual Designs & Photography. But the Design business has been the one thats been booming for me lately. Been super busy creating logos, advertisements, and websites for local companies as well as for local artists. Some of my favorite recent work has been album covers for Booda (Stressed but Blessed), Shonuff (Soul Surfin) and Ian J’s 520 Mixtape. I take serious pride in being a one stop marketing shop. Holla at your boy when you’re ready.

o whats next for us? All we can say is we are going to continue to bring you the best coverage of upcoming events, artist releases, and anything hip hop related. We know we need to develop a consistent release cycle and that is our number one priority from here on out. Also we are proud to announce our 5Twenty Television Youtube Channel and our 5Twenty Interviews. The first one featuring Cash Lansky & Marley B is available to view now. Granted the cameras and audio we use aren’t the greatest but if all our future interviews are anywhere as fun as the first one was, then we will be in for one hell of a ride.

hana Rose , that one Asian girl, the girl with the camera, the Rosegold girl, I’ve heard them all.
Just call me Shana, pronounced as Shay-na. Tucson raised with San Diego origins and a product of the Philippines. I’m a part-time photographer with Inter-State Studios and a full-time freelance multimedia journalist and aspiring news/entertainment personality, but as anyone chasing a dream knows, you never really clock out.
J
ust like anyone in their late teens to early twenties, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I went straight to a community college after high school and majored in business with the intentions of transferring to a four year university to dump more of my money into. Seemed like a safe enough plan.
I
was eventually introduced to local photographer and go-getter, Emay Flicks through mutual friends and had the pleasure of helping out with her numerous projects. I started out as her promo model, promoting events and helping out with the Tucson branch of eie Clothing co, a Clothing brand she brought down from Dallas, TX. We also brought one of her dreams to life when we opened up The Lounge, the hottest spot for hookah, hip-hop and R&B.
A
round that time I was then offered a job with RAW Natural Born Artists as the Tucson production assistant after coming in second place for their “host” audition. RAW Natural Born Artists is a nationwide, non-profit arts organization for artists, by artists. That job was basically a goldmine for meeting local artists, musicians, MUAs, fashion designers, models, photographers and cinematographers. I was so in love with being surrounded by so many passionate people. Their hunger for success was contagious.
A
few months later, I took my first journalism class just to have a full schedule. It was to my surprise that I actually liked writing and that I was good at it, I definitely changed my major and it made school worth staying in. My JRN 101 instructor (whom I
now call my mentor) said I should think about writing for Pima’s school paper, the Aztec Press. I started out as a reporter my first semester and came back as the social media editor and a copy editor the following semester. Baby steps, right?
I
t was through my instructor and mentor, Cynthia Lancaster (take her classes, she’s awesome!) that I found out about these magical un-paid opportunities that aren’t such a waste of time called “internships”. I ended up landing one with KOLD News 13, Tucson News Now, Tucson’s number one news station, no big deal and no pressure! I had the time of my life learning about B-roll, stand ups, live shots, packages, working with a fully equipped camera half my size and the oh so exciting prompter.

y most recent collaboration is with one of my favorite entrepreneurs, kAZual of Ohfishl Clothing and The5Twenty Magazine. I was graciously welcomed into his magazine that he’d build himself, front the group up. Together we’re covering Tucson’s hip-hop, art, poetry, food and clothing. f you’re wondering where the unveiling of the “Rosegold

Chronicles” comes in, here it is. The Rosegold Chronicles is just a little project I wanted to call my own after collaborating with my fellow creative masterminds. Although I’m not a pro, I still enjoy shooting photos and videos, trying my hand at editing, having my articles published in a few places here and there all while helping out with any local events and businesses. Honestly, my favorite part about this “job” is getting to know my city a little bit better. I’ve lived in Tucson essentially my whole life and it wasn’t until recently that I was exposed to a completely different side of this city. Every new project, article or interview is a chance to meet a new person, hustling in their own way, and I get the honor to share their story with everyone. ’ve managed to get my hands on all of these projects within the span of 2013 (there’s plenty I’ve left out, but lets keep it short). I’d say it was a damn good year, and I’m ready to make the rest of 2014 even better. I just want to take this opportunity to thank all my friends and family for the support and guidance. Whether I’ve succeeded or failed in my endeavors, I’ve learned to look at everything as a lesson, there are no mistakes! With that being said, I want that same message to hit the passionate artists, musicians and entrepreneurs I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and work with. nyways, let’s wrap this quick bio up... As one-half of the 5Twenty Magazine, I want to welcome our readers, the new and the day 1’s, The5Twenty is back and in full effect! hem boys did it again. Greenhouse Ent. along with DJ El Aaron from 91.3 KXCI hosted the 3rd Annual Tucson Hip Hop Unity Cookout & Photoshoot on March 29th earlier this year. This year it was held at Reid Park and it was bigger and better than the previous years put together. Once again hosted by Swindoe of Fingers de Freedom Clothing, who also provided the shirts once again this year.

his time around there was a stage for the performers and a great lineup of local talent. There was performances by Booda featuring Celena Santa Cruz, Prejon, Ezra Letra, Greedy Green, Siccmobb Click, my dude Shonuff and a bunch of others although I was definitely upset they put my bro Sho on last but he rocked it anyway with the homie Venezi. Once again our lovely local 5Twenty Photographer Mary “Aperture Shutter” Macphee was there snappin pics of everybody having a good time.

wanna take a second to thank all the artists that came out and supported this idea of unity and community. I honestly feel like there’s a lot of local artists that feel like they’re above certain functions like this, and you know what thats fine but don’t say you represent the city if you don’t believe in being involved in things that can only benefit the movement. You see thats my biggest beef with the local scene, there’s just too many egos involved

hat’s why I fully support what Eclipzo and El Aaron set out to do, and thats bringing the artists together. But I will say I have a few recommendations for next years event which the 5Twenty would most definitely love to sponser. And mind you these are just my opinion so to my folks that throw this event please understand these are just suggestions for future events.

.Stick To your schedule and adjust accordingly. I know for a fact they were having technical difficulties that delayed situations but a lot of that can be avoided with proper planning. Once again on the subject of Shonuff I do realized he got there a bit later but honestly homie had just dropped the most fire album of the year, I think he should’ve gone way earlier in the rotation.

. Make sure the artists know the time they are allowed and stick to it. I’m not saying cut a dude off but when Ezra Letra asked for 2 people to spit a 16 on his song with him, mufu**z took that as a open mic invitation and the next thing you know there’s a damn cypher going on and NOT EVERYBODY CAN RAP, plain and simple. That should’ve been deaded on the spot.
To be 100% honest when stuff like that happens at any show, it makes me want to leave. I get it that everybody wants to be the one to put “Tucson on the Map” but if rapping is just a hobby for you, please let the ones trying to make it a career do their thing please. (They probably hate me by now)
Even Prejon stopped himself in the middle of a song out of respect for the kids in the audience. Trust me I know parents appreciate it. Other than those 3 recommendations everything else was a great time. Looking forward to a bigger, better event next year. -kAZ

. If its a all ages event ask the artists to censor their set. This event was for all ages, there was families present and a whole lot of little kids and during one set all I heard was F this and Suck my that and I was just buggin out.

es my friends, they are back. Mr. Lansky and Mr. B are at it again gracing our pages with more of their accomplishments. Why? I’m sure some would say “prolly
because they homies with The5Twenty staff ” or maybe “because kAZual be on they nuts” or last but not least, “prolly because he don’t know nobody else”, which is my favorite. True they are good friends of mine; I mean how can you not be? These two cats are two of the most down to earth artists the city has ever known. But what do I know right? Well allow me to elaborate by saying one word: CONSISTANTCY.

sk Cash and Marley how long I’ve been a fan and they’ll tell you way before The5Twenty Magazine was even an idea. Back before they had even met Murs I was and still continue to go to as many local shows as my schedule allows me so I’ve seen and heard their progression firsthand. Back when Marley B was on Determined and Cash was performing

at North Shore, I was there. I’ve seen their stage presence blossom into a crowd moving show that’s capable of rocking arenas, and they have!
B
efore Cash and Marley signed with Murs, they had already been establishing a buzz that was undeniable. Cash caught the attention of local DJ Ripdee of Gldn Ghost and they established a close business relationship and Rip became Cash’s manager and personal DJ. Right about that time Marley B was at the end of his “contract” with Determined. I remember talking to Rip after a show one night at Delectables and he was telling me about the plans they had to form their own label and eventually sign Marley as well. Hence forth, The Gldn Artist Group was born.

uestion: How many local Hip Hop artists have you seen bring out a live drummer on stage with them? Quite a few I’m sure but if you’ve never seen Cash and Marley perform with Steven Escalante on the drums, then you missed out. Escalante is one of the dopest drummers I’ve ever seen live and those shows were epic to say the least. So see, here’s another reason why we respect Cash and Marley so much, because

they aren’t afraid to do things differently, they aren’t afraid to take risks. And risk takers with positive results will always have a place in this magazine.

hen came Murs. Both Cash and Marley had met Murs at separate occasions and settings, which to me puts the whole they came as a package deal bullshit to rest. Now first of all if you don’t know who Murs is, put this magazine down and Google the man and his reputation in the hip hop world, not locally, “IN THE WORLD CRAIG”! You’ll see that this gentleman is one of the most respected underground artists to ever do it besides Tech N9ne, who coincidentally recently signed Murs to his label Strange Music.

ow let me ask you this; do you think Murs was down to just up and co-sign anybody? For those who don’t know, Murs lives here in Tucson, so obviously just out of sheer curiosity and for the love of the game I’m sure he had his ear to the streets and caught wind of the noise Cash and Marley B were making. And this was going on during what to me was the rise of the local scene, as we know it today. I’m not saying there wasn’t a scene before them. Shit the Chronicles Show by Black One has been going strong for 8 years now. What I’m saying is that it has definitely grown stronger and there has been a lot more unity and development in the past couple of years, that’s what I’m saying. You can disagree with me if you like, personally I don’t care, I’m going off what I’ve seen and experienced.

Not mentioning any names but homie from the Tucson Weekly had a few words from a situation taken out of context. And of course you will always have haters but part of being a true artist is having the ability to rise above it which I can honestly say, yeah Cash and Marley be them dudes.

o what has Murs done for them you ask? Has he given them a 6 figure signing bonus? No. Did he buy them flashy new Label 316 pendants and chains? No. Are they getting massive ass checks in the mail to the point that they ain’t gotta go to work ever again? No, they still wake up and grind everyday like the rest of us. But let me tell you what he did give them.. opportunity! He showed them how a well-respected artist should condone themselves while on tour. He gave them a blueprint from an experienced artist perspective, which is just priceless. He gave them the opportunity of a lifetime because he felt in his heart that they deserved it. And what are they doing with that opportunity? They’re doing things that nobody in Tucson has done.

ow many local artists do you know that have rocked The House of Blues in Los Angeles? How many dudes you know that have had the chance to film a cypher for Team Backpack at Johnny Cupcakes in Los Angeles. Not to mention going on a nationwide tour with Murs himself?

If that isn’t pressure I don’t know what is. But even Cash said “Murs told us if his fans weren’t feelin’ us that he was gonna drop us off the tour”, so I guess it’s safe to say they were definitely feelin’ them.

he point is this, they are in this magazine again because they continue to show results and grow as artists. You can’t get a free verse from them anymore, and with good reason; they’ve earned it, they’ve paid their dues and are continuing to pay their dues everyday. I can honestly say that they have set a great example as to what hard work and opportunity can do for you. But even opportunity isn’t enough these days. Do I think they would be at the same level they’re at today had they not

signed with Murs? Yes, maybe not to the extent of the touring that Murs made possible yet, but

oth these cats are working on solo projects at the moment and have plans to continue to keep moving forward. I don’t think you could ask for more. Truth be told it’s hard to get any love in hip hop if you ain’t from Los Angeles or New York or Houston, places where hip hop is well established. But as far as the Tucson scene goes, these two guys have set the bar high and for that The5Twenty Magazine salutes them. These two gentlemen have fans across the U.S now. These two artists have seen the sight of 3000+ fans with their hands in the air bobbin to your music. And if you cant respect that..FOH!! - kAZ

Hard Work & Hustle proves positive for this 5Twenty Rapper.

that two artists from Tucson were nominated, and it was even bigger news when one went home with an award.
With seldom Tucson and Phoenix collaborations, a few Phoenix artists heading over for Tucson’s one and only annual Hip Hop Unity Photoshoot and BBQ and the Arizona Hoodie Awards, it’s safe to say that bridging the gap between the two cities isn’t too far off in the future.
“I was up for rap rookie of the year, which was a blessing. No one has ever won that award from Tucson, so I made history that night by being the first. I felt like I opened up a gateway for other artists in Tucson and helped gain respect for the city.”
he Tucson local music scene is a plethora of under-the-radar talent that’s just waiting to explode out of the city. For a while, it seemed that Phoenix and Tucson lacked the unity when it came to artists collaborating or supporting each other.
Let’s back track to 2013, to the 2nd Annual Hoodie Awards, the biggest award ceremony for Arizona musicians and artists receiving recognition for the all the hard work they’ve been putting in. It was a first 34

dropped on Halloween 2013 - A project he was proud of and one that his fans labeled “an underground classic.” His tracks “Let Him Go” and “No More” were made for the ladies, which won over his strong female fan base. “Let Him Go”, featuring Prejon and J-Rich, puts his listeners in the shoes of a woman stuck in an abusive relationship. He feels for her, but to an extent, because she won’t leave her abuser. “No More”, featuring Erica Rosay, paints a picture of a couple that just doesn’t have it going on, no more. Their once passionate love turns cold as time passes with their arguments. Eclipzo came out with “Everyday in the A” so his listeners can get to know him a little bit better. The track invites listeners to a day in his life; from his hustlin’ in the streets of his neighborhood to laying down tracks with his homies in the studio. One track that stands out from the rest on “Darkside of the Sun” is “Trill O.G.” The piano in the intro will take you by surprise. The sweet sultry voice of Emily Ivory is accompanied by a smooth melodic beat. Siccmindead is also featuring on the track, and together, they’ve came out with a song for the haters that can’t keep up with the moves the trill o.g.’s are making. So, what’s Eclipzo throwing together for his listeners next? His Ahunndoe Klan Mixtape and sophomore album, DYSTOPIA, both with a TBA release date. The mixtape is a group project featuring Netokid, Hopes Uno and childhood friend, Young Soulja. Opposite of his group mixtape, DYSTOPIA is all Eclipzo, with maybe a few collaborations. The album is dropping under Ahunndoe Klan Muzikk/Siccmindead Productions and produced by Mono G. Some collaborations to look forward to on DYSTOPIA:

Shout out to the whole Tuc and the Westside, if I make it, we all make it.” DYSTOPIA (n) - dys·to·pi·a/ disˈtōpēə: A society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding. Basically meaning a hellish world, which is how Eclipzo describes the neighborhood he grew up in. The reputation of Barrio Hollywood is often put in a bad light, as a gang-infested neighborhood full of drugs and prostitution. “I don’t participate in those activities anymore. I was a lost kid and found my way through music. I lost too many friends to murder and drugs. A lot of my homegirls are prostituting and hooked on dope. Its hell out here, nothing but trouble awaits here- its truly dystopia. I just want to succeed in a legit way.” Eclipzo has had his fair share of gang banging, pimping and drug dealing while living in Barrio Hollywood. The 2013 Rookie of the Year was even shot behind Menlo Park at the age of 15. His transformation to a better person was all for music and his kids. His maturity from a gang member to a passionate artist is visible. “I did something with this music for my neighborhood. There’s a lot of young homies looking up to me and I have to show them there’s a better way with this music.”

nce again our good friends from the HRG, the Honor Roll Gang (you know the motto) have made the 5Twenty pages. This time it’s Jaca Zulu who released a solo album titled “Meaning” and not only is it a good EP, the party itself was a memorable night for me. It was held January 25th earlier this year at Solar Culture Gallery down on Toole.

or those that have never been there thats exactly what it is, a gallery. Wall to wall paintings, portraits, and sculptures. Being a art lover myself I was already diggin’ the vibe of the place. Many HRG members were in attendance to show support to the man of the night. I was lucky enough to cop me a physical copy of Meaning for $5 and believe me when I say its worth every penny.

he night was filled with good music and poetry. Opening up the show was Teré Fowler-Chapman (Poet), Horse Black (Rock Band), The Original Saku ( Alternative Hip-Hop), & Katie Haverly
(from Copper and Congress) and last but not least HRG member Johnny Redd. I truly loved the combination of genres and it was noticeable in the diversity of the crowd.

ut as soon as the man himself hit the stage it was clear to see what this night was all about. Jaca performed basically the entire EP minus the 2 instrumentals on their which he produced himself. All around its a good EP. It has a variety of feels to it, like new age meets classical meets jazz and a touch of reggae. My favorite joint is “Rib Cage” produced by HRG’s own Nick Arcade, a smooth laid back joint with a catchy hook you just cant help but sing along to.
