INTERVIEW

THE FENUXE INTERVIEW

Single, accomplished, and

a catch but still not “The One.” Sound familiar? It’s a dilemma longtime comedian and actor Manny Oliveira explores to hilarious lengths in his new play, “I’m The Man You Meet Before You Meet The Man You Marry,” which is making its world premiere at 14th Street Playhouse on February 3. Fenuxe sat down with the gregarious Oliveira as he dove into the origins of the play, what the gay community understands better than others, and the potential for lingerie tossing.

14

FENUXE.COM

Fenuxe: So Manny, tell us how the play came about.

Oliveira: It came about, for lack of a better term, from tragedy. The first thing that came was the title. I had three significant relationships and after each one of those, the next person they met they married. So I said, “God, I must be the man you meet before you meet the man you marry.” And then I went, “Ooooh...that’s wise.” [laughs] Fenuxe: How much of it is drawn from personal experience?

Oliveira: Ya know, I tell people all the time, “whatever you think is true, is true.” [laughs] I mean of course some of it is autobiographical and some of it is just stuff I made up. It’s all true except for the stuff I made up, how’s that? Fenuxe: I wanted to ask about universal themes in the play, you know since we are a gay magazine—

Oliviera: WHAT?!

Fenuxe: You talk in the play about knowing the difference between being alone and being lonely…

Oliveira: I think that as a society we have become so entrenched in having to have a relationship. And we lead active lives. Everything we do, we do on our own. And at this point in my life I’m pretty much set in my ways and I don’t think that changes for anybody. But I don’t feel lonely, because I have people around me all the time. Friends, relatives, acquaintances, just people you meet socially. So if you get to that place where you’re content and happy and satisfied and very at peace with who you are, then you’re never alone. It comes from us, it has to permeate from us. So being lonely is one thing, but if you’re lonely you can go outside and shake somebody’s hand. But if you’re alone and feeling empty, then you got some work to do. Fenuxe: And if you’re doing this play where you’re the man you meet before you meet the man you marry, you’re bound to get at least a few phone numbers out of it.

Fenuxe: I know, it’s shocking.

Oliveira: Oh God! You know in 33 years in show business I’ve never met a single gay person.

Oliveira: Phone numbers, yes. A lingerie collection would be nice umm…for a lot of reasons! [laughs] But a lot of people have said that and I don’t think it’s the

Fenuxe: That’s what I’ve heard! There are no gay people in show business.

motivator here. It’s like buying Clinique – it’s sort of a gift with purchase. So who knows, I might meet someone!

Oliveira: There are no gay people in show business [laughs]. You know what? I don’t think that heartache or painful relationships or breakups know any boundaries. I mean, how many times have you been through a relationship and it just didn’t work out and you’re sad and the next person they met was the one? So I think the themes are universal. I have a theory. The gay community has been very supportive of the things that I’ve done all over the world and are very loyal, very intellectually-based, very sensitive in that they understand a lot of things that most people don’t have to go through – the challenges of course, the social challenges of being gay. But this is so universal, and it’s entertaining. And the message is quite clear – that everything sort of falls on us anyway.

Fenuxe: I think that covers everything on my end, unless you had anything you wanted to add. A message to the gay community perhaps?

Oliveira: A message to the gay community? [laughs] That’s good. I would give the same message to the gay community as I would the straight community. It’s a great evening of fun. There’s something in the entire thing that will touch you one way or another. It’s entertaining, it’s dancing, it’s music, it’s just a great time out. My message to the community is dress down. Super BOWL Party Playbook Gay guys and football players have more in common than you think. We both work out a lot, we both like to wear tight pants, and we both like to smack each other on the ass. So why not celebrate our common bonds this year and throw a Super Bowl party?

“Gone are the days of Super Bowl parties that offer an array of crappy beer and French onion dip,” says Tonya Figueroa, Director of Special Event Management for CMT (Country Music Television). She offers her advice courtesy of longtime AGLCC guru Sheila Merritt of local event company Q&A Events. “The smart social butterfly will seize this as an opportunity to showcase their hostess with the mostest skills.” You don’t have to blow your savings on a nice spread either. “Presentation goes a long way with food, whether it’s expensive or not,” says Figueroa. “Make your table look great and the food will be instantly

18

FENUXE.COM

elevated.” She suggests using small vases to put dips and sauces in, instead of using the usual white porcelain bowls. Or serve individual salads in plastic martini glasses. Do your table linens in team colors as well, says Karla Kreitner of local event planners Kardon Events. “You can also fill vases with marbles or acrylic stones in the team colors,” says Figueroa. Keep in mind that your guests will likely always have a glass in their hands and not necessarily someplace to put it while they are eating. So stick with one-bite foods like quiche or mini-biscuits with steak for the perfect “walk around” food. Kreitner recommends replacing the usual chicken wings with Asian chicken fingers and plum sauce. Pita chips with redpepper hummus or a cream cheese torte make for a tasty upgrade over bland chips and salsa.

Drinks aren't necessarily a budget-buster either. Keep it simple by only providing beer and wine. Then, if needed, do a specialty drink in honor of the team or the occasion, says Figueroa. Or Kreitner suggests shots with food or fruit coloring of the team colors. You can also make chocolate desserts in the shape of a football. “Picture luscious mini cupcakes with chocolate frosting and simple white stitching,” says Figueroa. You can host the Super Bowl party of the year with just a few simple but effective touches. And if you pull off a winner, everyone will be smacking your ass on their way out the door.

One-Bite WiNners Shrimp Shooters 1. Find a great (but easy) gazpacho recipe online 2. Place a tablespoon of gazpacho in the bottom of a disposable shot glass 3. Place a chilled jumbo shrimp on the rim 4. Eat the shrimp then shoot the gazpacho “My caterer does these a lot and they are a huge hit – especially when I put a tequila bottle next to it so they can immediately re-use the glass for a little ‘chaser,’” Figueroa says.

Deals After Dusk

Stop cringing at the astronomical dollar amount on your receipts the day after

going out. It causes wrinkles! But you can still go out to eat, drink, and indulge without causing a Botox appointment. Get caught up on a few simple money-saving tips so you can continue to live the nightlife like a king.

HalfOffLivingGroupSocialDepot – More “deal of the day” websites have popped up in the last couple of years than baristas with masters degrees. Everyone has their favorite, whether it’s Half-Off Depot, Groupon, or Living Social, but we swear by ScoutMob. It’s free and it’s easy. No spending $20 to get a $40 gift card to your favorite restaurant or museum; you get a straight-up 50% discount without spending a dime and they send the code to your phone. No money upfront, no printouts. Know Somebody – Sometimes all it takes to live it up after nightfall is to know the doorman. Besides, there’s a special thrill in getting waved into the club without paying a cover charge. Or bond with a bartender and you’ll see it reflected in your final tab. Score theater tickets from that actor buddy of yours. Don’t forget, it’s a mutually exclusive arrangement so if you bring people with money through the doors, you can reap the rewards.

20 FENUXE.COM

Industry Nights – Got a hot date but not the funds to finance it? Skip the traditional Friday/Saturday date and meet up on Monday. It’s service industry night and many restaurants and bars will typically offer food and drink specials. The Pre-Drink – If you’ve got a group heading out for the night, meet up beforehand at one of your homes and mix a cocktail or two. That $5, $10, $20 you save adds up so quickly by the end of the month it’ll pay your hefty iPhone bill. Know It All – Know about the free pool at New Order, the free Wii at Woofs, and Jungle’s monthly no-cover-charge Saturday. Know the clubs that never charge a cover like Blake’s, Amsterdam, and Woofs. Know about the always $5 martini and margarita special at Joe’s, Cowtippers, and Einstein’s. Know it all!

LEAGUES OF OUR OWN

Ryan Lee

IF ATLANTA’S FEROCIOUS winter has you searching for ways to keep warm, it might be time to try a reliable method: body heat. The city is teeming with gay sports leagues that will help you break a sweat no matter how low the temperatures drop. Oh, and they also offer a social network to help fend off cabin fever. Several of the leagues are in the midst of registration drives, with the Hotlanta Softball League hosting a sign-up/beer bust at Blake’s on the Park January 30, and the National Flag Football League of Atlanta accepting applications for new members until February 27. For other leagues – such as the Hotlanta Volleyball Association, the Rainbow Trout swim club and Front Runners Atlanta – membership is open year-round and can be as simple as attending one of the weekly workouts or practices. “We encourage people to join as early in the year as possible to get the most out of their membership,” says Thanh Doan, president of the Atlanta Team Tennis Association, a gay and lesbian league that hosts open play sessions every Saturday. “In Atlanta, tennis is played year-round,” he says. “There are tennis leagues for all seasons. We have players of all skill level, thus, we have a team for everyone.” ATTA also coordinates two tournaments each year, along with off-court activities for members such as Friday night mixers every month, Grand Slam viewing parties and block parties.

22 FENUXE.COM

Outings to the bowling alley, happy hours and trail runs are just a few of the social events planned by Front Runners Atlanta, where socializing plays a key part in working out. “The advantage of being in a club is the motivation that comes with running with a group in a structured, scheduled environment,” says Bernie Colligan, president of the gay running club, who adds that the colder months are refreshing compared to running in Atlanta’s steamy summers. The cold weather doesn’t deter the studs in the Hotlanta Soccer Association, who play in a 7-on-7 league every other Wednesday. “We play outside in the evening, so it can get very cold on some nights,” says Alex Aviles, secretary of the Hotlanta Soccer Association. In addition to its league games, the gay soccer club also practices in Piedmont Park almost every Saturday, where people can learn more about the organization or play in a scrimmage. “Wear lots of layers!” Aviles advises.

WHEN YOU LOSE one sense, do your others really become stronger? Dialog in the Dark invites foodies to put this concept to the test with a meal served in complete darkness at Dining in the Dark. If you want to spice up your date night or go on the most unique first date with that cute guy you just met – look no further..

Diners are first guided through the Dialog in the Dark exhibit. Guests are provided with a walking stick and are led to a transition room where the lights slowly fade. The visually impaired tour guides lead everyone through various lifelike scenarios. After the awe-inspiring tour, guests are led to the dining room, where your expert guides take on a different role as waiters and waitresses. And so your culinary trip in utter darkness begins. The absence of light introduces diners to a new set of dining challenges. The guides alert you there is an appetizer in the middle of the table – but where is it? How do you know if one of the other diners at your table has already found it? Guests quickly learn their sense of hearing can make the situation slightly easier as everyone shares their discoveries. Diners aren’t given the menu before the meal. This allows any foodie to truly put

their palate to the test. After each course is served, the chef asks about the food everyone is enjoying. Suddenly the atmosphere turns into a debate as guests try to correctly identify ingredients. Some diners jump right in with their hands, relying on their sense of touch to decide what is before them. Others rely more on their silverware and concentrate on their sense of smell and taste. However, ultimately, everyone agrees that the food is scrumptious whether they can see it or not. Dining in the Dark attracts the best chefs Atlanta has to offer. Chefs Ron Eyester from Rosebud Restaurant and Jason Hill from Wisteria are just a sampling of the masters behind the delicious meals. For adventurous Midtown diners, there’s one experience that makes perfect “sense” – Dining in the Dark. Experience the only culinary treat where taste, smell, and touch become more important than presentation.

The Gay Road to Financial Freedom It’s no surprise to hear where our money goes when we splurge for the big ticket items. In their 4th Annual LGBT Community Survey, LGBT market research experts Community Marketing, Inc. reported that the top five major purchases by gay consumers in the last year were (in order) a major vacation, laptop computer, furniture, high-definition television, and expensive clothing. But were we wisely saving up for those items, or digging a deeper and deeper hole of debt?

“It doesn’t really matter how cute a pair of jeans look on you, but if you lose your job for a significant period of time, you can’t sell the jeans to pay the bills.” Living Fancy Free Emma Foulkes is an openly gay financial advisor for National Financial Services Group. She has a wealth of experience working with gay clients and dealing with our often unique financial issues. She’s seen a pattern of troubling behavior concerning her single gay male clients. “The guys are very fancy free, just kind of living for today,” she says. “It’s all about how they look today, what they can get today, who they can impress today, that mentality.” Trying to change that behavior has been a struggle. “That’s the biggest issue I have, is getting the single guys to think about the future,” Foulkes says. To begin thinking about the future, goal number one should be to accumulate six months of living expenses to hold onto in that bank account. “It doesn’t really matter how cute a pair of jeans look on you, but if you lose your job for a significant period of time, you can’t sell the jeans to pay the bills,” she says. So cash is truly king.

Getting disability insurance is another sound financial step. If you’re sick or hurt for an extended period of time, you don’t have to worry about losing your house or your car. You can worry about getting well instead of adding more stress to an already stressful situation. If over 45 years of age, Foulkes recommends looking at a long term care policy. It typically covers home care, hospice care, assisted living, and other similar types of care often occurring at an advanced age. It also routinely takes care of what’s not covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or health insurance It’s a series of vital steps for all gay singles and couples, but gay couples in particular should also have some key people in their corner to take advantage of every financial opportunity possible.

Keys For Couples Three people should be on speed dial for every gay couple, and it’s not your stylist, your trainer, and your wedding planner. It’s a financial advisor, estate planning attorney, and a CPA.

“Come To Jesus” A financial advisor can help a couple take advantage of the fact that domestic partnerships are not recognized by the federal government. “Gay couples would not be allowed to file a joint tax return so there are certain types of accounts that we may still have access to, like Roth IRAs,” Foulkes says. There are laws in place to protect heterosexual couples if they divorce or pass away. Not so much for gay couples, and that’s where an estate planning attorney comes in. That attorney can draw up a domestic partner agreement, a will, a health care directive, and a financial power of attorney. Foulkes considers these “essential documents to have to protect your family unit.” [For more information on these documents, see “Red State Blues: Protect Each Other” from the June 24, 2010 issue of Fenuxe] A CPA can help determine who should claim what on the tax returns to make the situation as advantageous as possible for a couple. Which one of you should claim the house? Who should claim the kids? Whose health care benefits should be used? The CPA can help connect the dots to secure your family’s future.

Foulkes will often have what she calls a “come to Jesus” meeting with a client. She is not only honest with them, but she asks them to be honest with themselves about what they really want in life and what they’re willing to do to get there. “A lot of times they think financial planning is about taking their money away,” she says. “That’s such a misconception.” So say you want that new jacket, or that Beamer, or that cute little house in Morningside. It’s about the sacrifices one is willing to make today to get them. “One of the things I tell them is, they should live like they’re going to die tomorrow but they should save like they’re going to live forever,” she says. The concept of “forever” can be a hard pill to swallow for a society, and a community, often prone to having an immediate gratification mentality. “That mentality got us into the mess we’re in now,” Foulkes says. “So we’re going to have to go old school and do what our grandparents did and if we really want something, we’re going to have to save for it.” FENUXE.COM 29

Dear Mary, How old is too old to use smiley faces in texts? I’m dating a guy who is 47 and can’t send a text without including a wink, smile, or that stupid one where the tongue is sticking out to the side. I think there’s potential with this guy but not if it involves years of :) and ;) and :p. Am I just being an ass? Signed, Emoticon-flicted Dear Emoticon, Wait, what? Emoticon-flicted? Really? I feel like you made up your entire question because you had that punny little gem up your sleeve – but since this issue is clearly an important and pressing one that has affected hundreds if not thousands of lives, I will graciously offer my advice anyway. To start with, I would like to clarify that my cell phone was cutting edge in approximately 2001. That said, I have to scroll through like 100 things to make a smiley face – every freaking punctuation mark on the planet comes before the colon and the parentheses, and half the time I miss the one I want and have to scroll all the way through again. What I’m saying is, there’s a chance this guy is putting some effort into that winky face; I personally will not go to that great a length unless I really like the person or I’m concerned they’re too dumb to get my sarcasm. ;) That said, and I mean this with love to my more mature readers, there is something ooky about a guy that age sending digital smilies. If he has also offered you candy or promised he has a puppy back at his house, it might be time to run screaming in the opposite direction, possibly with flailing arms – but there I go assigning “creepy old guy” to this situation when it could just as easily be “dorky old guy,” in which case I imagine once he gets the hang of texting and sees that you don’t use emoticons, he’ll catch on. Or you could just go ahead and tell him to knock it off :p

The FIVE STAR Wealth Managers do not pay a fee to be included in the research or the final list of FIVE STAR: Best in Client Satisfaction Wealth Managers. The overall evaluation score of a wealth manager reflects an average of all respondents and may not be representative of any one client’s evaluation. The FIVE STAR Award is not indicative of the wealth manager’s future performance. Wealth managers may or may not use discretion in their practice and therefore may not manage their client’s assets. The inclusion of a wealth manager on the FIVE STAR Wealth Manager list should not be construed as an endorsement of the wealth manager by Crescendo Business Services or the Atlanta magazine. Working with a FIVE STAR Wealth Manager or any wealth manager is no guarantee as to future investment success nor is there any guarantee that the selected wealth managers will be awarded this accomplishment by Crescendo in the future. The score reflects only those managers who were named by respondents to Crescendo’s survey, and does not include all wealth managers in the Atlanta area. The term “wealth manager” is defined by Crescendo Business Services.
