Go Green Renowned Melbourne landscaper and all-round plant guru, Phillip Withers, shares his tips and tricks on how to style plants (inside & outside) and maintain them through all the harsh Australian elements The Courtyard

The Luscious Interior

On your patio, courtyard or outdoor entertaining area, it’s nice to work with clusters of pots, consider cover pots or pots with reservoirs built in. Understand the architecture and develop a themed environment, such as Palm Springs, which we brought to the Fenton & Fenton courtyard through cactus, hardy succulents and palms with low water requirements.

Bring in the luscious big leaves to create a cool green atmosphere and environment. Cluster together groups of different shapes and contrast, such as grasses with shape plants and a palm to give great timeless effect. Consider placements closer to the windows and pots with deep trays or even built in reservoirs and start a weekly timetable for upkeep.

The Architectural With smaller courtyards it can be nice to keep it simple sometimes by creating statement pieces or even a couple of statements with key planters and a possible architectural tree such as Maple, a Dragon Tree or even an Opuntia which we brought to the beautiful Fenton and Fenton courtyard.

Large Semi-Formal Add feature pots to a larger, semi-formal garden, utilising timeless pots to grow food such as herbs or fruit such as citrus. Here we can create easy to pick access and statement pieces to help give balance and structure to a space.

Natural Consider incorporating a larger variety of plant life to more naturally open garden spaces. Here you can look to utilise timeless pieces in key areas to create a story as you wander down a path and help lead your eye through a space. Pieces such as the Den Holm limestone pot paired with an interesting succulent such as an agave Americana are classic and help tell a story. This October the Phillip Withers Landscape Design team launch ‘Shrub Hub’ – A lush green plant lovers hub, @shrubhub_pwld.

Style Cues If you’re a long-time friend of Fenton & Fenton, then you’re probably familiar with the work of Heather Nette King. Renowned interiors stylist, Heather is the talent behind the styling of The Island Collection, along with so many of our other shoots. Heather talks about the wonders of Summer and her tips on creating a special place in your outdoor area. All the tantalising little signs are appearing: the hint of Jasmine in the air; the urge to shrug off your jacket in the afternoon; and happily, fresh stone-fruit is back on the green-grocer’s shelves. Yes friends, summer is coming. The best bits of summer are undoubtedly those spent outdoors – be it a stolen, solo hour reading by the pool (yes, I’m dreaming here), or having an impromptu gathering for friends – just because it’s going to be a gloriously balmy evening that’s waaaaay too good to be wasted indoors! The Fenton and Fenton summer range is all about making the most of those moments – it’s about opening up the doors, indulgently reclining in a lounge, and creating the most stylish outdoor table settings around. Read on to discover Fenton & Fenton’s beautiful summer edit – it’s called, appropriately, ‘Island’ because who doesn’t dream of a little escape? Even if it’s just for an evening. Enjoy, oh and make mine a margarita. And don’t hold the salt. hnk x

Iconic designs inspire Mr Fenton’s latest towels Our love of iconic twentieth century design movements continues, and following on from the success of Mr Fenton’s ‘Modernist’ rug and towel range, comes four beautiful new sun-drenched towel designs. The ‘Bauhaus’ is a playful geometry of triangles, squares and curves and comes in either pink or blue. The ‘Palm Springs’ brings to mind the look of cool plants against painted pink walls that is synonymous with Palm Springs style. The Aztec is a super-sized beach towel in earthy, desert tones, and was inspired by chasing the sun, all year around here’s to that!

Pampas and the dried botanicals In a massive nod to 70s style, pampas grass has made a big comeback to interiors. The pale, elegantly draping look of pampas works beautifully with Fenton & Fentons’ outdoor range, as do the other popular botanicals such as dried fan palm, wild millet and the palest, almost nude orchid stems.

“A confident attitude to mixing and matching will make all the Tropical plants and florals difference to Tropical plants are the perfect way to cool down a warm space - indoor or out. your home.” Monstera, Dracaena, Calatheas, and Spathiphyllum are all very popular, and readily available and will add a lush, tropical, and infinitely ‘island-like’ vibe to your home. Fenton & Fenton have a huge range of pots – both new and the some incredible vintage pieces. To create a visually layered and eclectic look, mix large plants with smaller ones, spreading ones like Monstera with dangling ones like Devil’s Ivy, and even a rugged cacti. Like it is with interiors – a confident attitude to mixing and matching will make all the difference to your home.

You can style-up your summer table-top with a hit of tropical inspired botancia too. Palm leaves look gorgeous in a vase by themselves, but add in a crazy mix of coloured Anthurium flowers or glorious orchid stems in juicy hues to really make your table-top sing.

Wild & Wonderful Founder of Basil Bangs, Krista Huebner, chats to us about the inspiration behind the brand, the highs and lows of running a small business and her tips on how to entertain outside.

What inspired you to launch Basil Bangs? We started Basil Bangs with our mates back in 2010 because between us, we couldn’t find beautiful beach umbrellas suitable for a wedding present. Ultimately our aim was to rejuvenate an enduring product category, and introduce our own ‘contemporary classic’. Mike’s background in product design and our collective love of the beach made it a no-brainer! As we’ve grown, both as a business and as a family, we’ve translated our vision of ‘design for everyday’ more broadly, focusing on creating thoughtful products that suit our indoor/outdoor lifestyle at home, work and the beach. Tell us about the highs and lows of running a small business Oh gosh - the highs are HIGH and the lows are STRESSFUL. But it’s a great ride. The fact that it’s all on you is a big thing but the creative freedom of realising your ideas and working with my husband is pretty fun.

What is the inspiration behind the latest collection? Our collection this year was heavily influenced by the colours and sounds of growing up in the 80s and the dusty colours of the pacific coast and the southern California desert from our recent road trip there. It was like we put our collective memories to a sound track of Neil Young and through a Super8 filter. Think bubble-o bills, fibro shacks, zinc. the whole family squashed into the Kingswood going to the Gold Coast for holidays, mix tapes, terry towelling and tans. Faded vinyl, big florals, and crochet. Zinc on the nose, tan lines and tanning oil.

Run us through the process of bringing a collection together Mike and I will mood board colours, artworks, pictures and patterns we’re loving. Mike’s great at forecasting colours while I’m more about mood and feel. Together that process drives our development and ultimately informs how we want to shoot the range and what’s on our playlists. I’m a true Gemini so naturally a bit of a bowerbird but can be quite divergent in my directions. I’ll usually have two very strong directions I want to take. Mike helps crystalise it and pull it together. He’s the Virgo, and beds down the details and sweats the small stuff. Thank god he’s the one in charge of design! What’s on the cards for Basil Bangs in the coming year? We’ve just opened a summer pop up shop in our local ‘hood’ of Manly Beach in Sydney. We’re loving being in the shop showcasing the range in its entirety. Fun times! We’re also plugging away at some new things *secret squirrel*.

What are your top tips for entertaining outside? Fresh flowers or foliage are a must. Beautiful shade on a hot day is essential. A good tablecloth (or placemats) are the low effort, high reward workhorse of any table setting. You can have the ugliest, cheapest, nastiest table underneath and no-one would know any different if a gorgeous cloth is on top! Plus, ours are of course the best - spill proof, wine proof and beautiful and easy to clean. AKA The Bomb Diggity. In terms of food, we like to keep it simple with lots of shared plates and lovely fresh ingredients and a ‘help yourself’ bar table with mismatched vintage glasses is also great. We make sure we have a festive mocktail ready to go, so that grownups and children alike can feel festive.
