到一个女孩子戴了一个很特别的空眼镜，没有镜片，

通过报纸结识了很多朋友。记得那时候，有些朋友会很含蓄

只有色彩鲜艳的镜框，不禁笑着对她说：“你真潮！”

地说：“我太太很喜欢你写的东西”或是“我先生昨天还谈

那女孩儿叫了起来：“啊，你也知道‘潮’这个字呀？”啥啥

到你的文章”，甚至有不止一位朋友说他们把我的好几篇文

啥？是说咱们又老又土不是？

章从华报上剪下来寄回中国，有个来探亲的伯伯还特认真地

俺不仅知道“潮”这个字，俺还知道“神马都是浮云”。 有一天对着彭方晨想显摆这句话的时候，他指了指桌子边上 放的第一期《枫华之声》杂志：“这不是一个神马？” 创刊号的封面上是一匹飞马， 飞马背后是一片蓝天，封面 是非常有才的关波女士设计的，那匹飞马也是她亲手画的。 大概出版第一期的时候正好要进入马年，或者说马的寓意很 好，比如一日千里，或是马到成功什么的。时间很久，记忆也 变得模糊。 当然《枫华之声》既没有一日千里，也没有马到成功，只 是跌跌撞撞地走进了第十年。说长不长，说短不短。那么神马 是不是浮云？ 不久前打电话给大病初愈的梁医生，就是原来《缅省 华报》主编蔡医生的太太，问候她之余谈到《枫华之声》的 现状，我说我很累。她特别理解，她告诉我，他们办《缅省华 报》的那二十多年里面，他们不仅每次休假都要绕过出版日 期，而且每次离开都不能超过两星期，都是为了按时出版每 月一期的《缅省华报》。就是这么辛苦地办了二十多年报纸， 却也在2000年停办了。我不敢问梁医生：“那华报是不是浮 云？” 很多近十年来的华人可能根本没有听过《缅省华报》， 但是对于我来说，华报不是浮云。刚刚度过来到温尼泊的第 一个冬天，我就迫不及待地向华报投出了我来加拿大的第一 篇文章“春天来了”，登载在华报1995年六月号上。从此开始 了我在缅省华报上的“枫林心语”专栏，每月一篇，基本没有 间断，一直写到2000年八月号《缅省华报》最后一期。我记 得我最后一篇的题目是：“奉献者之歌”，送给迁居到外地的 蔡医生和梁医生。 《缅省华报》已经不存在了，但她绝对不是浮云。她不 仅让我在加拿大的头五年生活变得充实，还让我从前辈身上 学到那么多宝贵的品质与精神，学到一些大气与胸怀，更让我

说，你要出专集的时候我一定要买几本，吓得我受宠若惊。还 有的朋友开玩笑说，他们夫妻在家一同学习“爱妻箴言” （我 在九八年给华报写的一篇文章）。记得好多年后，老朋友汪谷 奇还引用我在华报的一篇文章“富士山啊只有一座”，后来见 到王牧师的时候，他说他是通过“红脖子”那篇文章认识我 的。总之，那时候常常会有一种非常沉醉的感觉，觉得蔡医生 他们这些老移民非常有胸襟，而很多同胞也很厚道，那么会 鼓励人，所以给华报写稿让我海外的生活也不觉得辛苦了。 “枫林心语”是不是浮云？当然是浮云，从华报那里一 直写到今天，已经写了一百多篇心语了，文笔虽不够好，也付出 了很多真情实感，还常常被读者的的反馈所吃惊。但心语总会 有一天写不出来了，因此她一定就是浮云。 《枫华之声》是不 是浮云？我不知道。 “回首向来萧索处，亦无风雨亦无晴”。从第一届的中 秋晚会在信义会地下室二、三百人的联欢，到现在上千人的 体育馆盛会；从第一年的不到十个人的编委会，到现在有几百 位义工帮助过这本小小的杂志；从几个人风里来雪里去把杂 志送到全市一个个发行点，到加拿大邮政局把杂志寄到每一 位会员的家中；作者的年龄段越来大，作者的地域越来越广 泛，义工中有了越来越多的青年人，……

人们都说“神马都是浮云”，我想问：人世间有没有神 马不是浮云？ (注：“神马”——网络用语， “什么”的谐音）

In the publishing world, it is not unusual for magazines to come and go quite quickly. As you well know, a great deal of effort is required to regularly meet deadlines, compose stories, conduct interviews and get to the printer on time.

Fortunately, as dedicated volunteers of the tribune, you not only accomplish these tasks, but produce an award-winning, top quality magazine. You should be very proud of the national recognition this excellent publication has received during the past decade. As

Past Chair, I feel extremely privileged to have been asked to review some of the major achievements and milestones in the first decade of the Manitoba Chinese Tribune (MCT). Without hesitation, I would rank the very fact that we are here to celebrate its 10th anniversary as the most satisfying achievement. Not every non-profit organization thrives to see its 10th year, especially when it’s a grass-roots organization and when it’s run exclusively by volunteers! A very happy 10th anniversary to MCT! Sponsored by the Manitoba Academy of Chinese Studies, MCT published its inaugural issue in February 2002, under the chairmanship of Dr. H. C. Lim and editorship of Ms. Helen Wang. Lacking Chinese-compatible software, the first issues were printed from camera shots of cut and pasted papers, by real scissors and glue! Throughout the next 9 years, the organization has gained its independence, the printing technology has evolved, the design and features have professionalized, the number of pages has more than doubled, the all black-whites have been increasingly illuminated by vivid color inserts – not to mention the all-color of this special issue, and the hand-to-hand delivery has been replaced by direct mailing via Canada Post.

However, the relentless drive for originality, creativity, and diversity of the articles, the free availability of the magazine, the true spirit of dedicated volunteerism and team work, the tranquility of friendship, love, and care, and the humbleness and closeness of a grass-roots community have remained

As a result, the 1st decade of MCT has witnessed its ever-increasing circulation and readership in Manitoba, and across the country. Copies of the magazine and shirts of MCT have also been spotted in homes in the USA, flights to China, and occasionally on beaches of the Caribbean. The magazine has received four national awards (2005, 2008, 2009, 2010) from the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada, the only ethnic magazine in Manitoba and the only Chinese magazine in Canada that has ever been recognized to this level. Though not necessarily a household name in the non-Chinese communities, the impact of the magazine has seen the doubling in the number of advertisements from all sectors, which has helped to keep the magazine free of charge.

To detail all the achievements and milestones in the past 10 years will quickly use up all the space of this special issue, so I am only going to list some of them in the timeline table on the next page. They are rather brief, but hopefully will serve as a quick glance of the demanding yet rewarding 10 years that the magazine and the community have journeyed together.

I mentioned community because MCT is more than just a magazine; it is a group of dedicated volunteers actively involved in the building and development of our community. Among many activities that MCT leads in our community, three annual events stand out: the MCT Moon Festival Social, which is held around midSeptember to early October usually at the University of Manitoba and has become the largest social gathering in the Chinese

community in Manitoba; the MCT Spring Festival Potluck which is held around later January to early February usually at a local elementary school; and the MCT Summer Picnic which is held around later June and early July at an outdoor park. Through these and other activities, MCT has contributed immensely to the closeness, caring and volunteerism spirit of our community.

I became the second Chair in January 2006 following the relocation of Dr. Lim; from then until December 2010, I had the great honour to work with some of the most talented, hard-working and inspiring people in our community. They might have served under different titles as board members, editors, writers, photographers, event organizers, performers, readers, business partners, or more often, without any title, but they had one in common: they were all volunteers. The volunteers often come as families, with two or three generations of an entire family all stepping out. It works the other way too: new families are also formed from the volunteers - if both of them care so much about MCT and the community, they must also care for each other and the new family!

Working with them has enriched and enlightened my life, and I believe through MCT they have enriched and enlightened our community and society in general.

While it’s impossible to name them all – you know who they are, I cannot finish this without mentioning one individual: Helen Wang who has been the Chief Editor and the “super glue” of the organization since the very beginning. It is fair to say that Helen is the reason that MCT was germinated and the reason that it has blossomed to this day. I am also grateful

枫华 十年 MCT FOCUS to Dr. Frank Xiaofeng Guan who generously “answered the call” to become the new Chair at the end of my term. To me, one of the most monumental achievements of MCT is this continuous discovery and draw of truly great people. So to Helen, Frank and all fellow volunteers, thanks and congratulations!

Our community is still young, and MCT is only at its adolescence. Working together, there are many more decades ahead that will be filled with imaginations and achievement. But for today, I am going to close this special issue and pause on the particularly fitting front cover: gazing through the images of all the past issues is simply a beautiful and magnificent feeling!

January: MCT published its inaugural issue. First Chair was Dr. H.C. Lim, Chief-Editor was (and is!) Helen Wang. The first issue had a total of 56 pages.

April: Published the first editorial “Helen’s Note”. Since then, Helen has been sharing her thoughts and vision with the readers in every issue – without missing a single one!

September: Held the first MCT Moon Festival Social at a local church.

January: Membership of MCT Club took effect. All the members would receive free copies of the magazine, as well as many discounted prices and services from selected business partners.

February: Published a special column in the magazine celebrating the 5th anniversary of MCT. MCT website completely revamped.

March: Held the 5th Anniversary Potluck with Ecole St. Avila. This would become the beginning of a long-term collaboration with the elementary school on various language and cultural related projects.

Initiated the MCT Service Awards to recognized outstanding volunteers.

The first awardees were Dr. H.C. Lim, Jade Wang, Lily Liang, Jia Yan, and Yijun Fan.

March-April: MCT and the Winnipeg Chinese Culture and Community Centre co-led a fundraising campaign to help Mr. Shuo Hao, a Chinese student at the University of Manitoba who was diagnosed with lung cancer but got caught by insurance glitches due to his international student status.

A total of $29,219.42 was raised for Mr. Hao’s family.

September: Held the 5th MCT Moon Festival at the University Centre of U of Manitoba. More than 800 guests attended.

May: A devastating earthquake shook Wenchuan in Sichuan Province, China. MCT worked together with all the Chinese community organizations to raise more than $100,000 for the Canadian Red Cross to help the victims and reconstruction.

June: MCT published the Wenchuan Earthquake special issue. This would be the first special issue of MCT.

October: Held the 8th Annual MCT Moon Festival at the Athletic Centre of the University of Manitoba. More than 1000 guests attended the event.

Announced 4th MCT Service Awards winners: Xueyong Zhang, Duanduan Liu, and Xiaoxu Chen. Representing MCT, Chair Feiyue Wang won another award from the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada. This was the 4th national award MCT received in the first decade.

Trial versions of the report cards will be tested in some schools in 2011, and the new format will be introduced in all the school divisions in the 2012-2013 school year. The goal is to enable parents to be full partners in their kids’ education.

: I know you were born in the Philippines. When did you come to Canada, were you a “new immigrant” then?

:My family and I arrived in Canada on June 23, 1982.

Back then, family members can sponsor relatives under the family-assisted category. There were no landing fees of $475 per adult or minimum settlement funds of $10,000 for the principal applicant and $2000 per dependant requirement. I don’t recall paying an application fee and if there was one, it was nothing compared to the $550 each paid per adult applicant nowadays.

: How did you adapt to the life in Canada after you arrived to this new country and what did you find you the most difficult? How did you overcome

: Once my husband and I found employment we slowly settled down to our life in Winnipeg. It helped that family and friends supported us, both materially and emotionally. School kept children busy during weekdays and Sunday mornings were spent with family and friends at our church.

The very cold winter weather was a constant struggle for us in the early years. Commuting by bus to and from work in the winter months, we had to be minutes ahead of the scheduled bus arrival. When buses ran late or if we were late in catching the bus, the waiting time for the next one seemed like an eternity, especially during high-wind chill temperatures.

: You have a lot of experience in the ethnic media because you had been the editor/publisher of “The Philippine Times”, a community newspaper for the Filipino Canadian community in Winnipeg for 12 years.

Our volunteers with the Manitoba Chinese Tribune, would like to hear from you about the roles ethnic media play in our multicultural society. Do you think what we are doing is meaningful? What kind of challenges did you have when you were the editor of the newspaper?

A

: Community newspapers play a big role in fostering identity, cohesion, and cultural pride. They provide a valuable service to the community by being a dependable source for information and entertainment.

The biggest challenge we had in publishing a community newspaper was generating enough revenue. During our publication years, we rarely reached break-even in terms of costs and revenue. (We did it while we have full-time

day job.) For us it was more a labour of love than an economic enterprise. We believe our community needs to know the pressing issues in the old country.

This was then not adequately served by other publications so we ventured into this undertaking. However, I won’t begrudge publishers whose aims are to realize monetary profits from the work that they do. Workers deserve to be paid for their labour.

: In 2007 Provincial election, you won a big victory with a total number of votes higher than the combined votes of your four opponents. What did you say to yourself when you won?

A

: Winning overwhelmingly over my four other opponents was a testament to the trust the electorate had with the NDP, the party that I represent. Personally it was an unexpected “career” move for me after retiring from my day job. I did not plan to be in any elected government position. Had it been my goal, I would have worked my way within the party and sought a nomination to any constituency which will accept me. Two weeks into the campaign period the position was offered to me.

: How did you feel about being the first woman of color in the Manitoba parliament? Do

you think your community played an essential role in your winning process?

A

: Being elected to represent the constituents of Wellington was an honour and a humbling experience for me. I thought others would agree that it was an honour to ethnic communities that I was the first female visible minority elected in the Manitoba Legislature. I have hopes that my election would pave the way and encourage other women—First Nations, Metis, Inuits, and from visible minority groups—to seek election.

For the Filipino community that I am a part of, I hope my election was also considered an honour—being the first female of Filipino descent to be elected in Manitoba and the first in Canadian parliamentary history. Certainly, the Filipino community as well as the other communities that I was involved in played a big role in winning the election

: Are you going to seek reelection in the fall. If yes, why do you want to do it again?

What is your vision and plan if you are re-elected? : I have decided to seek reelection on October 4th to continue serving the constituents of Wellington which will

be named Logan by then. There are education, training, job-generating, crime prevention, health and wellness programs I wish to pursue for my constituents. I would also like to see accreditation and recognition of foreign education and work experiences strongly in place. Besides working to obtain affordable housing, I would also like to see infrastructure and capital investments are undertaken in Logan.

Moreover, I would like to see Manitoba’s rich arts, culture, heritage and the gifts of multiculturalism accessible and appreciated—they contribute greatly to the quality of life that we have in Manitoba.

: Do you have any personal suggestions to the new immigrants in terms how to adapt and adjust better and faster in their new home in Manitoba? Is there anything else you want to share with us?

A

: Honesty, hard work, positive attitude and good sense of humour will go a long way in adjusting and successfully settling down to a new life in Manitoba. Keep your relationships with family and friends strong—they are priceless treasures in life.

《枫华之声》帮助枫华 俱乐部会员报税

2011年4月23日（周六）上午十点在曼尼托巴大学中心543和 544房间，为方便枫华俱乐部会员中低收入的家庭准备报税申请， 特地邀请加拿大税务局工作人员前来协助。到目前为止，枫华俱乐 部已经连续三年帮助会员免费报税，深受会员们欢迎。

《枫华之声》组织义工防洪 由于去年冬天降雪超过以往，导致临河居住的民居面临洪 涝威胁，作为生活在这个城市的一员，大家都有义务尽一臂之 力。2011年4月9日， 《枫华之声》杂志社组织义工十余名，响应市政 府的号召，前往红河岸边扛沙袋、筑堤坝，协助市政员工进行抗洪 工作，精神可嘉。

人在不同的位置上帮忙，枫华这十年变化非 常大，进步很快，我也为它感到骄傲，不论 到什么时候，那些同甘共苦的日子都是难忘 的。

对枫华未来的期待 提高知名度------首先是内容要吸引 人，不能总是几个人在写稿，应该扩大作者 群；其次是排版更专业化，目前版面有点太 满，留白较少，虽然是为了传递更多信息量， 但是感觉不够轻松；还有要提高印刷质量， 这期做了一个很好的尝试，纸张和色彩都比 较讲究，以后要是一直都能做到全彩就太好 了，一定会很受欢迎。当然了，我知道这比较 难，主要是资金一直短缺，对于我们来讲，

做杂志再难也是容易的，拉广告筹资金才是 最难的，但相信商家看到自己的广告出现在 这样高质量的杂志上还是会大力支持的。

论， “值？还是不值？”中曾写道： “亲爱的朋 友，你说说看， 《枫华之声》这件事做得值， 还是不值？”。对于这问题我有以下的看法。 “全球化”是这个时代非常普遍的常用 语和表现形式。在超市可以买到从新西兰来 的羊肉、从墨西哥来的黑莓或从泰国来的荸 荠；在网路上，我们可以发现世界每个角落 及时发生的新闻和每一个课题的参考资料， 令每个人很自然地融入世界村的生活中。但 是，具体到我们的城市和社区呢？《枫华之 声》就提供了更亲近的信息，表达了社区成 员的心声。它关心本地社区，可以为读者营 造一种同胞间的共鸣和团结友好的气氛。 《枫华之声》的投稿者和读者要想入 境随俗，适应新环境，必须先熟悉加拿大与 中国很不一样的社会和文化，同时，保留中国 文化的根。 《枫华之声》成了沟通的桥梁，既 帮助读者了解加拿大社会的资讯，又使读者 能够保留与中国文化的联系，因为它发表的 文章，是从中国人的角度来观察加拿大的社 会，读者可以了解两种文化的优缺点和共同 之处。 令人惊喜的是， 《枫华之声》全由义务 工作人员支持着。每两个月义工们得负责收 集文稿与照片，进行面谈和招揽广告，再加 上校对和排版，才可入印刷厂印刷发行。我 想这些义工们同心协力办这本杂志，是因为 知道这项工作的重要性，和身负的使命感。 《枫华之声》已有十年的丰富历史。温 尼泊的华裔肯定还会继续鼓励支持它，让它 在发扬中国文化的舞台上扮演重要的角色。

I recently re-read the editorial by Helen Wang (Wang Hong) titled “Is It Worth It or Not” that appeared in issue 50 (April, 2010) of the Manitoba Chinese Tribune. Readers may remember that, in this editorial, Wang Hong asked by way of introduction if the pleasure derived by watching a display of fireworks was worth the cost of the fireworks. After all, once the fireworks are over, all that is left are scraps of paper and some pleasant memories.This introduction was, however, only a lead to the real intent of the editorial, this intent being the posing of the question: Is the Manitoba Chinese Tribune worth all the effort that goes into producing it? Very astutely, Wang Hong did not answer this question; rather, she concluded the editorial by asking, “Dear friends, what do you think? Is Manitoba Chinese Tribune worth publishing?”

By way of a personal response to the question, I would like to offer the following thoughts.

We hear the word ‘globalization’ a lot these days, and certainly its manifestations are all around us. When we go to Superstore to shop, we see lamb from New Zealand in the meat department; in the fruit department we find blackberries from Mexico, and, in the ethnic foods area, we find water chestnuts from Thailand. Every time we go online, news of events around the world and information about any imaginable topic is as close as a few clicks of the mouse. All this is very good, but I think that it is also necessary for emotional health to feel a part of not only a global network but also a local community. After all, when we are ill or sad or just want a friend to talk to, neither the good foods from faraway places in Superstore nor the myriad Internet websites are of much use. At such times as these we want and need someone or something close at hand - the local.

For this reason, I think publications like the newspaper The Lance and magazines like Manitoba Chinese Tribune are very important components of the fabric of any community, be that community determined by geography or religion or ethnicity like Manitoba Chinese Tribune. They are concerned with the local; they can foster a sense of solidarity; and they can give voice to members of a community.

Most of the readers of, and contributors to, Manitoba Chinese Tribune have had to learn (or, are in the process of learning) to deal with life in a Canadian culture and society that is, in many, many ways, different from that of China. At the same time, ties with Chinese culture cannot, and should not, be dismissed. The Manitoba Chinese Tribune provides its readers with information that is helpful in adjustment to Canadian society and, at the same time, enables its readers to maintain ties to the culture of China by publishing articles that examine Canadian life from a Chinese perspective, thus assisting those

I am very impressed by the fact that the Manitoba Chinese Tribune is produced entirely by volunteers. And there seem to be many people willing to volunteer (an appropriate English expression is: “Many hands make light work”). My view from the outside is only hazy, but what I imagine is a small group of committed individuals who work together with some degree of harmony in the production of the Manitoba Chinese Tribune. Every two months, this group must ensure that articles and photographs are obtained; interviews conducted; editorials written; and advertisements solicited. Once this is done, the material to be published has to be proof-read, laid-out and printed. Finally, the new issue of the journal has to be distributed to readers.

All this cannot be an easy task. The accomplishment of this task, however, and the knowledge that the task is of value, and the solidarity produced by seeing a difficult and taxing job through to the end, must surely engender a feeling of community and comradeship among the many volunteers who contribute to the Manitoba Chinese Tribune, a feeling that is, in itself, of incalculable value.

It is a big responsibility to produce a new publication every two months, and it has to be recognized that the editors and others with primary responsibility for the Manitoba Chinese Tribune have taken upon themselves a task that, at times, must seem overwhelming. These people, and indeed all the volunteers who work to produce the magazine, require support of all kinds. The Manitoba Chinese Tribune has enjoyed ten years of successful, productive and even surprising existence. With encouragement and effort from members of the Winnipeg Chinese community, it can continue to fulfill its important role for a further ten. Is it all worth it?

In my hands I hold issue 55 (February / March 2011) of the Manitoba Chinese Tribune. A colourful photograph of a lion dance adorns its cover, while its 88 substantial pages of charming and provocative content are laid out and printed in elegant fashion.

My mind returns to a time ten years ago. I can see clearly, as if it was only yesterday, the soaring horse on the blue cover of the initial issue of the Tribune.

Back then, the Editor of the Tribune, in her very first appeal to potential advertisers, wrote, “A journey of a thousand leagues begins with the first step.” We can now see that the soaring horse has flown far more than a thousand leagues. In its flight it has crossed a thousand mountain ranges and passed over ten thousand seas. It has ranged beyond the boundaries of its Prairie motherland and, like the mythical roc, spread it wings and climbed to the heavens.

It has grown from infancy to vigorous youth and is no longer just a newsletter of the Manitoba Academy of Chinese Studies.

It has developed into a Chinese cultural journal serving the whole of Winnipeg and is imbued with the power and spirit of a corps of dedicated volunteers.

I had the good fortune to be one of these volunteers when the Tribune was just starting, and have never ceased to believe that it could find a niche in Winnipeg.

The journal’s first Chairperson, Dr. Lin Xingzheng had great foresight and sound judgment. He invited Ms. Helen Wang to be Editor-in-Chief and decided to expand the coverage of the journal to include the world beyond that of the Manitoba Academy of Chinese Studies. The fluid prose of Editor Wang had already appeared in the old Manitoba Chinese Post, and she had an established following of readers that included myself. Thus there was a conviction from the outset that the new publication would not lack for articles and content. At the beginning, the Manitoba Academy of Chinese Studies provided financial support, with contributions from local businesses and Chinese expatriate organizations. After an initial period during which income from advertising was less than the hoped-for amount, we were soon in a position where revenues matched expenses.

There is nothing that is not difficult at first. I can recall innumerable meetings in the home of the Editor-in-Chief during which we discussed everything from

本 the solicitation of advertising and articles to our goals and aspirations for the journal -- How could the scope of the Tribune be expanded?

How could we take the journal online? How could we attract more volunteers to help out? How could we improve the quality of our publication? In those days there were no more than ten enthusiastic volunteers. We sometimes worked so hard that we found no time to eat or rest. Well do I remember long, sleepless winter nights in the home of Zhou Xi during which we proof-read and laid out new issues.

Mr. Zhou wanted all to be perfect, and so each page had to be just so before copy could be sent to the printer. Today I still remember with fondness the support provided back then by Mr. Zhou, and am still thankful for the magnanimity extended by his wife to us volunteer workers.

Time slips imperceptibly by. It is hard to believe that it is already eight years since I left Winnipeg.

Since leaving, I have not been able to participate in the production of the Tribune. Still, its editors have not forgotten me, and continue to send me the new issue of the journal every two months. I have thus been able to witness its maturation and observe the gradual realization of the Editor’s goals and aspirations.

I cannot help but be gratified at the success of the Tribune, and sincerely wish for its continued progress. More importantly, I hope that a greater number of people will join the Tribune’s production team, thus enabling the journal to be of even higher quality. With more participation, the dream can continue to soar and be rewarded.

Wind is away, I still stay Seems like a turn Yet gone ten years of story”

This was a little poem by Gary published in “Manitoba Chinese Tribune” (MCT) in 2005. Truly, it seems just like a blink of an eye, but ten years have passed with MCT. We could write about all the happiness, all the hard work, the excitement and laughter at St. Vital Park or King’s Park, the arguments we had with MCT folks, and even at times, the frustration and the tears. In the past few days, many thoughts came to mind. What becomes clear in the end is our gratefulness.

There is a well-known Chinese phrase, saying that if you give others a rose, the fragrance of the flower will remain in your hand. MCT gave us the opportunity to feel the joy of giving and helping others. It is a blessing that one has the capacity to give, and to help. In this materialistic world, MCT reminds us of such a blessing that can enrich and nourish one’s heart. In the past years, we have served as an editor, an author, a Master of Ceremony, actors, and other capacities. Our daughter Rachel and son Dunstan have also served as authors and actors. All the involvement with MCT made life stressful at times, but the fun and joy we had was way more than those stresses. We remember one year before the annual Moon Festival celebration held

by MCT. We were expected to perform a dubbing comedy called “MCT Restaurant.”

(A dubbing comedy is a traditional Chinese comedy, in which one person acts and the other does the voice while hiding behind the actor. The fun comes from the acting, the voices, and the dynamics between the two actors). We barely finished the script three days before the performance and only had a chance to rehearse it while we were waiting outside of our daughter’s ballet classroom, inside our minivan. It must have been quite a scene for the people walking by and seeing us dramatically acting in the car. That same show also gave Gary quite a challenge of having to imitate Editor in Chief, Helen, walking model steps. Have we never seen Helen on the T stage? No way! The night before the show, Gary finally got the feel after much practice and the show turned out to be very good and much liked by the audience. All the hard work paid off when we saw that our show made people laugh merrily. It was such a rewarding experience. That’s

exactly how MCT spirit works – MCT has provided a platform for anyone who would like to volunteer and serve people.

That is, as mentioned above, to give out roses to others while the scent stays in his /her own hands. We ourselves have seen a great number of volunteers work so hard for MCT. During busy times, some core volunteers even had to work overnight!

Exemplars like this silently inspire more and more people to come and volunteer their time for MCT and we can witness the MCT spirit of love and giving come into being.

We also thank MCT for bringing out our potential in many ways. Although we had never dreamed of becoming a poet or a writer, Gary has published more than 30 poems in MCT and Lily’s articles in MCT also got her a small group of fans. And our performing life with MCT all started with a little attempt at dubbing a comedy show in the inaugural MCT annual Moon Festival celebration. After that, every year our “fans” expected more of us, which was a challenge. When the Moon Festival came near, we would start panicking.

Thank goodness, though every year we were walking on thin ice, but somehow we managed. Phew! Fortunately we left Winnipeg; otherwise we would soon have come to the end of our wit. When we look back, we thank MCT for the platform that it has provided to many people like us. It is from all these writing and performing opportunities that our skills continue to improve. As an editor, Lily often noticed that some authors wrote better and better in each new issue. We know when receiving emails or phone calls from those diligent editors asking for articles, the first reaction is, “Oh no, how will I find time?” But think about it, if they don’t pressure us, when will you write voluntarily? When will you have time? Don’t forget that they are helping you to develop your own potential.

People of all ages, no matter where they come from, whether they are new students or established professionals, everyone enjoys something at this celebration. This event also brings different organizations together, collaborating in building a better community.

There may be many other Chinese magazines in North America, however, MCT stands out due to both the originality and the quality of its articles. During the years we worked with MCT, we have made friends with lots of people. We have been bad at keeping in touch with them after we left Winnipeg, whereas by reading each issue of MCT that comes to us in mail, we are well up to date about news in the Winnipeg Chinese community. It is sometimes like reading a personal letter from an old friend when reading MCT articles. If it is written by a writer familiar to us, we can even picture him or her in our mind and the good old times we spent with them.

It seems incredible that MCT, an immigrant magazine run all by volunteers, has gone through ten years. At this 10th anniversary time, we would like to salute all the core volunteers who have unselfishly devoted a great amount of time, energy and love to MCT!!

One great thing about MCT is that it has kept its mission of serving the grass roots; serving the Chinese community.

When we immigrated to Canada, we were prepared for all the hardship associated with a new start. When anyone first comes to a new country, it is almost inevitable that immigrants will feel lonely and empty.

We also felt the gap and separation from our first language and the warmth of the Chinese culture. MCT came to be a bridge over this gap by connecting home culture and host culture. Through MCT, Chinese

寻找我们精神的家园”。我几乎就是应了这 种宿命式的预言搭着20世纪的末班车来到 加拿大。如果没有记错的话，我大约也是在 《枫华之声》杂志创刊的第一期就开始为枫 华写稿。

想起来与《枫华之声》相守的日子确实 给我带来许多快乐。我与《四海为家》栏目 的编辑月冰先生是多年的老朋友了。在我的 印象中从前的他比较率性，有时说话也比较 尖刻。自从做了《枫华之声》的编辑，他的两 片嘴就像抹了蜜。我这人喜欢有感而发，最 怕把写作当任务来完成。每次月冰来催稿我 都会拿他开涮，胡司令又来催租子了，爷我 这几天心情不好胃口不佳无心写字儿。但月 冰不急不恼，好话一个劲儿的说，什么资深 啊，专业啊，反正那些不花钱的高帽子紧着 慢着往你头上戴。听着那些过份的褒奖，明 明知道是掺了水分，可心里还是觉得万般受 用，糊里糊涂就把马屁当知音，像被狐狸赞 美的乌鸦那样引颈高歌起来，答应下期再努 力。时间久上了瘾，每次的电话约稿甚至相 互的问候都变成了此类的斗嘴，让我有了片 刻如同家人般的轻松和愉快。 离开温尼泊之后，也到过一些城市也见 过一些华人的期刊，但那从头至尾的广告和 充分物质化的说辞让人见文生厌，从而淡化 了为这些刊物写作的胃口。文人还是需要一 点精神的；没有那份淡定，那份恪守和坚持 便写不出清丽脱俗的文字。也正因为如此， 《枫华之声》作为我们的精神家园是我们远 在天边也会守望相顾的，在这一点上我们没 有那份地域的遥远与隔膜。 十年了， 《枫华之声》就像一枝报春花 绚丽地开放着，在这个如汪洋大海般的英语 世界中代表着一个古老民族的文化而发声并 彰显自己的存在价值；美丽着自己的美丽， 尊严着自己的尊严，让人肃然起敬。 让我们为她未来的十年行注目礼吧！ 戈壁石 撰于卡尔加里 2011.03.28

意为《枫华之声》尽自己的一份力。就这样，

我是幸运的Lucky Me

枫华结缘就要两年了，真心地为 枫华十年来的成就感到骄傲。身 为枫华的一个编辑，哪怕是沾了前辈们 的光也很骄傲呢（笑）。我的枫华故事还 不太长，09年秋初拉乍到温尼泊的时候， 结识了小尖牙、老蔡和王老师，很巧合 地为枫华写了一篇中秋晚会的报道。接 着就被委以重任，接替了刘群成为了文 坛艺苑的编辑。一切都发生在短短半年 间，直到今日已有一年多。 虽然已经习惯了两月一次的收集整 合，但又时常惶恐，觉得是莫大的责任， 总是希望能找到更好的文章，写更有价 值的编辑小语。想来，我是很幸运的，能 得到主编和各位义工的信任，在这样一 本凝聚着众多人的努力和关注的杂志中 得到一席版面，可以把大家以及自己想 传达的信息传达出去。

个月，Helen发email说《枫华之声》 快十岁了，问我想不想写一篇自己与

记得刚开始为《枫华之声》写第一篇作 文是在我上三年级。那时刚移民到加拿大， 在多伦多没待几个月，爸爸就准备到曼大上 博士。妈妈在去过温尼泊“考察”后决定我 和她还是留在多伦多好。半年后，由于不习 惯加拿大的生活，我终于决定自己飞回国。 回国后，姥姥姥爷带我在承德玩了一大圈， 爸爸妈妈就让我把在承德玩的写篇作文。就 这样，我的第一篇《枫华之声》的“稿子”诞 生了。 在这七年里,从《枫华之声》的文章里可 以看到我的成长记录。从游记里可以看出我 去过的地方，西到温尼泊和温哥华，南到纽 约和华盛顿DC。 因为我不住在温尼泊，所以我没能参加 《枫华之声》举行的活动-春节晚会，夏季 烧烤，中秋晚会等等。因为《枫华之声》是 加拿大民族传媒协会的积极会员，我爸爸每 个月都会代表《枫华之声》在多伦多参加会 议。在2009年，朗月有幸得到了民族传媒协 会的最佳记者奖，我和爸爸也有幸参加了颁 奖仪式。仪式之所以特别，是因为颁奖的是 哈珀总理。颁奖前，我可是兴奋得不得了，可 当真见到他了，才发现他也没什么不同（总 理也是人！）。 在这七年里，我的生活里发生了众多的

Last month, I got an email from Helen saying that Manitoba Chinese Tribune is celebrating its 10 years anniversary soon, and as one of the authors I should write the story between myself and Manitoba Chinese Tribune. While writing, that’s when I realize it’s been seven years since the first time I wrote for Manitoba Chinese Tribune. Even though I never lived in Winnipeg, but I never stopped writing for Manitoba Chinese Tribune.

It all began in grade 3, when we just immigrated to Canada. After a few months of being in Toronto, Dad decided to go to University of Manitoba for his PhD degree.

After visiting Winnipeg for a week, mom and I decided it was better if we stayed in Toronto. Six months later, because I didn’t like Canada at that time, I decided to go back to China by myself while mom and dad stayed in Toronto and Winnipeg.

The summer when I was in China, my grandparents decided to take me to Chengde, a city not far from my hometown.

After going to Chengde, it was when my first essay for Manitoba Chinese Tribune was written.

As mentioned before, I have never lived in Winnipeg, thus I have never been to the parties and galas hosted

by Fenghua Voice. But even though, Manitoba Chinese Tribune still brought me experience otherwise I would never have had. Manitoba Chinese Tribune is in

the part of The National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada, a council which promotes minority media in Canada.

Through some activities and year banquet I have met people that I have otherwise never met before, from The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, the Prime Minster of Canada, to the Honourable Dalton McGuinty, the Premier of Ontario, to David Onley, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

You can see the changes of my life throughout all the essays I have written within 7 years. Coming to Canada, going back to China, and then coming back to Canada, from being in grade 3 to grade 10, nothing was the way it used to be. Having a little sister in the family and many more….

Let me introduce myself. My name’s Hannah Zhang, but I’m much better known as “Helen Wang’s daughter”. I’ve been a volunteer for the Manitoba Chinese Tribune for…well, pretty much since the beginning.

The Fenghua magazine (MCT) started when I was four years old. I might have been young, but there were always certain things I could do to help. Though my Chinese isn’t exactly the best, I am always able to help out. People often say they’ve grown up with Fenghua, but I’ve literally experienced it. Fenghua has been part of my life for the past 9 and a half years and I’ve grown and leaned through it. Why do I work with MCT? Well, to tell the truth, I really didn’t have a choice.

My mom’s the editor in chief after all. No matter the reason, I’m glad that it entered my life. You can kind of trace my growth from the MCT. I perform nearly every year at the annual MCT Moon Festival Social.

From singing with my dad when I was five to writing a comedy and performing it at age thirteen. From drawing simple pictures to writing stories and articles for the magazine to publish. I believe that all this volunteering will benefit me one day.

People think that I’m at an advantage with such a highly-respected mother. I think I’m lucky to have such a great mom, but not at an advantage of any sort. Sure, I may be the first to get plans on the upcoming events, but other than that, nothing much.

In fact, because everyone thinks I have an advantage, it gives me a disadvantage because I try to avoid having that tag on me all the time. I mean, you haven’t yet seen me on the cover of the magazine, have you? Getting something from MCT is a lot harder when everyone thinks you cheat.

I’ve made so many friends through MCT, though mainly University students and some adults. I love being around them because they’re so much fun. I’ve seen them come to Manitoba to study, be introduced to MCT, become a volunteer, graduate, then leave, making their stay at Winnipeg very memorable. I miss a ton of them every single day, such as Chris Dong and his mind-blowing magic, Maggie and her cool designs, or Duanduan and her kind smiles. Luckily, I still have a few close ones around me that I can’t have lived without, like Hao Chen and his awesome photography skills! Or Fangchen Peng. For the 2010 MCT Moon Festival Social, he stepped into our play with a two day notice and did an amazing job. He’s hilarious and always makes me laugh and smile. This is the stuff from MCT that I will keep with me for a lifetime.

And now, looking back at the (nearly)10 years I’ve spent with the MCT, watching friends come and go, I’ve unconsciously developed a strong relationship with this organization. In fact, MCT is not just an organization and magazine. It’s a community where everyone belongs and is accepted.

Where talent and uniqueness is shone upon. MCT has changed my life. Though I’m still going to continue to grow into a “dirty rotten” teenager, MCT is truly something I can come back to no matter what and call home.

寻到一个在迷茫时给予启示，伤感时得到安

作为一名新人作者，虽然给枫华投的稿

醒目映入眼帘，那是枫叶的颜色也是我最爱

最无助的时候，枫华给了我最温暖的拥抱，

阅读完一整期，发觉这不仅仅是单纯的 文学杂志，还是一本充满眷恋之心，搭建起 中加友谊桥梁的杂志。虽然对我而言这是一 个陌生又遥远的国家，但是熟悉的汉字，流 畅真诚的表达让我深感一切仿佛触手可及。

Hannah is a 14-year old student at St. John’s-Ravenscourt School. She is attending grade 8. She likes to play the piano, read, and have lots of fun! She loves to watch Chinese shows and listen to Chinese music! Her favourite show is Happy Camp and her favourite singer is Jason Zhang.

枫华 青春 MCT YOUTH As winter fades, I savor the warmth of the sun and think about my connection with the journal Manitoba Chinese Tribune.

Even though, because of geography, I have only been able to read it in its online version these many years, anticipation of its contents remains unwavering.

My relationship with the Tribune began five or six years ago. At that time, I had occasion to re-connect with a friend from the past. The mother of my friend told me that she had published an article in a journal called Manitoba Chinese Tribune.

When I went online to investigate, my attention was immediately drawn to the red print of the journal title, a red characteristic of not only maple leaves [the Chinese title of the Tribune, “Fenghua zhi Sheng” includes the character for ‘maple tree’], but also of the Chinese nation. The main webpage was crowded, but neatly laid out, and I could see at once the contents of each of the columns. One after the other, I opened each column, all the time wondering what I would encounter.

After having read just one issue, I could already tell that Manitoba Chinese Tribune was not only a literary magazine, it was also a publication with an affectionate heart that created a bridge of friendship between China and Canada. The familiar Chinese characters and graceful, sincere writing style enabled me to feel that, although to me Canada is a strange and distant place, I could almost touch it. It was also only then that I realized that Chinese people, even though they may live abroad, are still able to maintain their ethnicity and culture and still undertake to write about the events in their lives.

As I read articles in the Manitoba Chinese Tribune, I paid close attention to the brief biographical sketches about their

authors that the Tribune provided. Over time I came to think that, perhaps, I could myself submit an article that the journal editors would see fit to publish. Then, one day, a paper copy of the Tribune arrived in my hands for the first time. On the cover were two faces smiling at me brightly, while inside was an article that I had written. I was overjoyed. The content of the paper edition of the Tribune was more fulsome than that of its online counterpart and included items on ‘daily life’ and ‘news and information’. In fact, the issue in my hands seemed like a miniature encyclopedia. I was pleased to learn that the Tribune was produced entirely by a corps of unpaid volunteers and was very moved by the persistent, unselfish and solicitous devotion of these volunteers.

A high quality journal, in fact, does not rely on lofty words nor fancy covers – it aims only to reveal an unadulterated world in which inspiration is provided in times of uncertainty, in which comfort is forthcoming in times of sorrow and in which joys can be celebrated with others.

And such a journal does exist, speaking our language, testifying to our development and expressing our hopes and dreams.

For readers and writers both, there can be no greater pleasure than opening one’s mailbox to find tucked inside, patiently waiting to be read, a long-anticipated issue of this journal.

Although I am a relatively new and infrequent contributor to the Manitoba Chinese Tribune, I feel that I have the freedom to write what I want. I once felt that the world was composed only of the bit of turf under my own feet, but now, in response to current conditions, I cannot help but take a stand against compromise.

With the Manitoba Chinese Tribune as

my companion, no matter how dire the situation, I feel held in the warm embrace of a friendship comparable to the kind of love that can only be provided by those who are blessed with ‘understanding’.

When circumstances appear to be at their most dire, the simple composition of a few words and their transmission across the ocean to the Tribune brings relief. When I am most uncertain, the Tribune provides encouragement and the freedom to tread resolutely, as I choose, along the long and tortuous path of authorship.

I like to think that I am able to transmit the caring and nurturing I receive from the Tribune to others. I strongly believe that, when our lives are at a low point, a word of appreciation is much more significant than words of praise uttered when our lives are going smoothly.

As our roles in life change, our attitudes also change whether we are aware of it or not. The stormy seas of youth are supplanted by the ripples of minor anxieties and later by the placid waters of equanimity.

Because of the Tribune’s ‘understanding’, it draws me in.

Ten years is a long time. Ten years also pass quickly. Even though I have not walked beside the Manitoba Chinese Tribune during all of these ten years, I hope to accompany it during forthcoming decades.

As I write this present essay, my friendship with the Tribune is very much in my mind. Its pages have carried my dreams, built my confidence, borne witness to friendship and, lastly, sustained the heart of a young woman who timidly longs to ‘know’ the world.

outh Winnipeg Family Information Centre (SWFIC) is a community based, not for profit, organization that has been strengthening and supporting families throughout the City of Winnipeg since 1974. We are located in the heart of Fort Garry at 800 Point Road. SWFIC offers parenting education, training for youth, resources and referrals.

As a parent it may be difficult to see the value of a parenting program or course if you are not experiencing challenges.

Parenting programs at anytime during your child’s development however can enhance relationships in the family and allow you to gain a new found confidence in responding to various situations, crises, and problems that may arise. As children grow through various stages of development you will find that your parenting skills need to adapt and respond to the changing situations.

Being ready to respond to those varying stages can be achieved through parenting education. Just as many of us in our careers attend professional development opportunities to stay current and up to date with changing trends, technologies and information; parenting workshops can be thought of a professional development for our most important career ever –

parenting! Parenting programs provide you with an opportunity to keep your skills sharp in addition to providing you with an opportunity to share thoughts and ideas with other parents. South Winnipeg Family Information Centre offers a variety of courses that cover topics relating to discipline, temperament, child and adolescent development, parenting styles, conflict resolution, confidence, self esteem, accountability, and different family dynamics. All of our programs are preventative in nature.

South Winnipeg Family Information Centre also offers programming to youth (including babysitting training) which will help assist them in becoming responsible and capable young adults.

Our programs focus on imparting education and emphasize the importance of accountability and responsibility. Our youth programming presents youth with skills that are needed as they continue to grow, mature, and take on more responsibility with schooling, work, safety, and general everyday situations.
