From the Chairman of the Board Dear Members and Friends,

2013-2014 was another strong season for Fencers Club. As a nonprofit entity, we remain completely reliant on the generosity of our members to maintain Fencers Club as the premier fencing organization in the USA and to focus on all our charitable outreach and scholarship programs.

Based on legacy contracts, we have had to heighten our focus on our finances. We, therefore, continue to focus on reducing our operating deficit while expanding our membership and sources of revenue in order to ensure the Fencers Club’s financial viability. The Board is also focused on actively identifying a new potential home so that we can create a world class facility to maintain our overall dedication to the sport of fencing by our members and to remain an Ambassador in our community through our outreach programs outside of the Fencers Club. We will only be able to achieve these goals through your generous support to create permanence for the Fencers Club.

As part of our fencing outreach programs, we began our military Veterans fencing program in 2013 with the support of the USOC, US Paralympics and the Department of Veterans Affairs to engage Veterans from all branches of the Armed Forces to pursue fencing. We also continue to coach more than 1000 students in NYC schools in our Schools Partnership Program as a formal Community Olympic Development Program. Within the FC, our members continue to perform at the highest level nationally and internationally, including two history-making victories: Miles Chamley-Waston’s Individual Men’s Foil World Championship and Nzingha Prescod’s gold medal at the Marseille Individual Women’s Foil Grand Prix. Our High Performance Program ensures that our elite athletes perform at their very best. Beyond the US, Fencers Club will continue to forge global partnerships with like-minded fencing organizations. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank our hardworking Executive Director, Liz Cross, as well as our entire member community for your ongoing support.

Sincerely, Rex R. K. Chung Fencers Club

From the Executive Director

Fencers Club is a vibrant and diverse community of members of all ages and backgrounds. Everyone from young children making their first lunges to adults who have been fencing for more than 50 years comes to Fencers Club to fence and enjoy spending time with each other. Afternoons are full of activities by school-aged fencers taking lessons, participating in group classes, and doing their homework in the lounge. Our coaches are completely engaged in developing our athletes to attain their goals. Around six in the evening, our college-age members and adult members arrive ready to take lessons and to bout. My favorite time is around seven when our seasoned members with years of experience and knowledge mentor our younger fencers. It is a wonderful scene.

Our members accomplished much this season: - Miles Chamley-Watson, Nzingha Prescod, and Nicole Ross represented the Team USA in the 2012 London Olympic Games - Our members brought home numerous world cup, national and regional medals and titles - Our students achieved at high levels in academics and the arts - Our scholar-athletes gained entrance to prestigious schools and won scholarships As a club, we continue to grow with more than 500 dedicated members who are all committed to making the club the best nonprofit organization through excellence in fencing, learning, character development, and community service.

In just two short years, our Fencers Club Schools Partnership Program is now partnering with more than 30 schools and community centers with total of over 1400 students participating in the program this past academic year. Our competitive athletes work hard to coach, motivate, and inspire students. We are also working to create lasting relationships with a fencing club in Seoul, Korea, and a club/training center in London. We anticipate 10 students from Seoul to join our Summer Academy Day Camp this July. Next spring, we hope to send some of our students to Seoul and to London to fence and for cultural immersion. I would like to thank our dedicated board members for their guidance. Special gratitude goes to our talented and dedicated Fencers Club staff members who work long hours to administer and ensure all Fencers Club programs are running efficiently and meet the high standards worthy of Fencers Club. Sincerely, Liz Cross

Veterans on Guard! Fencing Program Fencing is an exciting, fast-paced combat sport that is ideally suited for military Veterans and members of the Armed Forces. It is a physically challenging sport that fosters complex problem solving skills, encourages mental agility, and teaches focus and discipline. Our goal is to provide the highest level of training to engage military Veterans and Active Duty personnel through fencing. We will provide opportunities for them to compete locally, nationally and internationally. Veteran fencers may choose to learn to coach as well, and we will offer them the chance to work with and mentor students in our Schools Partnership Program.

VETERANS ON GUARD!

The goals of the Fencers Club Veterans On Guard! Fencing Program are:

• To provide opportunities for Veterans to integrate into the community through fencing. • To promote physical fitness and emotional well-being in the Veteran population. • To identify and engage disabled and able-bodied Veterans to pursue excellence in fencing, professional development, and serve the larger community. • To create a pipeline for adaptive (wheelchair) fencing for disabled fencers in NYC.

Launched in the winter of 2013, the Fencers Club Veterans on Guard! Fencing Program is the first of its kind in the NYC area. We currently have more than a dozen Veterans and Active Duty personnel fencing epee twice per week. In addition to weekly training sessions, we have also scheduled a team competition for the Veterans and our elite epee fencers on Sunday, June 8, 2014.

We have received a grant of $15,000 from the Department of Veterans Affairs through US Paralympics, a division of the US Olympic Committee, to help provide coaching, equipment and space for these dedicated men and women. In New York State alone there are almost one million registered Veterans. Working closely with the USOC, US Paralympics, the Department of Veterans Affairs and local Veterans’ organizations, we hope to reach as many Veterans possible to help those who honorably served our country succeed both on and off the strip.

Fencers Club Receives a

USOC/Dept. of Veterans Affairs Grant FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 1, 2014

Some of our Military Veteran Fencers

NEW YORK, NY – Today U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), announced that Fencers Club has been selected to receive grant funding in support of Paralympic and Olympic sport and physical activity programs for abled-bodied and disabled Veterans and members of the Armed Forces. More than $7.5M million in funds from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has been awarded to 70 community organizations and National Governing Bodies around the country.

Through this program, grants ranging from $13,000 to $500,000 were provided to USOC partner organizations and community programs to increase the number and quality of opportunities for physically or visually impaired Veterans to participate in physical activity within their home communities and in more advanced sport programs at the regional and national levels.

“This funding has allowed thousands of veterans and service members with physical disabilities to participate in Paralympic sport at the community level,” said Charlie Huebner, chief of Paralympics, USOC. “Through the leadership at Veterans Affairs and within Congress, these funds have a tremendous impact on the availability of programs across the country, not to mention thousands of lives.” Fencers Club is using its grant funding to support two weekly training sessions for Veterans, to purchase adaptive fencing equipment and to host a competition for Veterans this June. Research has shown that regular participation in physical activity has a positive effect on the rehabilitation process, self-esteem, education, employment and overall health. Through the fast-paced, combat sport of fencing, Fencers Club hopes to promote physical fitness and emotional well-being in the diverse Veteran population of New York City. The grant funding for this program is awarded by U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, through funding provided by Veterans Affairs. The grants are provided to facilitate the growth of Paralympic sport programming for Veterans and members of the Armed Forces.

The Peter Westbrook Foundation: A Partner Organization

Dear Members and Friends,

Fencers Club and the Peter Westbrook Foundation have been like a second home to my family for over twenty years.

My sisters and I walked into the PWF for our first introductory fencing class in 1995 where we were immediately intoxicated by the elegance and speed of the sport. Even more than the fencing, though, did the powerful familial atmosphere on display by Peter Westbrook and his world-class mentors and coaches plant the seed that would inspire me to continue fencing. After several years of participation, it became evident that this interest in fencing was blossoming into a very strong passion and we were encouraged to join the Fencers Club Youth Development Program with the PWF.

My family and I never would have imagined the amazing opportunity that this would be for, or the intense impact that it would have on my family’s development. I was able to train with some of the best athletes and coaches in the sport of fencing and to see countries and meet people from all over the world. My family was always fully welcomed as members of the Fencers Club community, which expanded my exposure to a unique and diverse set of people. Words do not begin to express the great deal of appreciation that I have for the staff and leaders at the Fencers Club and the Peter Westbrook Foundation for enriching my life with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I would have never been able to achieve any of the accomplishments in my life without the support of the members from this amazing organization and I know wholeheartedly that the young athletes that follow in my footsteps will continue to appreciate this same opportunity. Best, Benjamin Bratton 40
