Feltonfleet School Cobham, Surrey

Where Individuals Really Matter

Feltonfleet has a deserved reputation as being in the very front rank of prep schools. Here ‘individuals really matter’ and we pride ourselves on developing confident and happy children with a zest for life and a love of learning. We are a co-educational school because we have every confidence in the benefit that boys and girls reap from learning, playing and working alongside each other. Our firm belief is that co-education prepares young people to build successful relationships and better equips them for a life spent at work. As Headmaster, I love the vibrancy of our School and its family feel. We offer a breadth of experience here, delivered through a challenging curriculum and an impressive extra-curricular programme. We have a team of high-calibre, dedicated teachers, committed to offering excellent pastoral care that focuses on supporting and nurturing the individual. Our top-notch facilities allow pupils to learn new skills and develop existing ones to the best of their ability. The School is located on a beautiful 25 acre site of landscaped play areas, pine woodland and games fields. Calvi House is our dedicated pre-Prep department offering all that is special about Feltonfleet to 80 children aged 3-7. Our Prep School is a larger family of 310 pupils offering the option of weekly or flexi boarding as well as a popular breakfast and after school club, to support working parents. As a father to three young girls myself, I know that choosing the right schooling for one’s children is the most important decision parents will make. The years 3-13 are critical for developing in young people confidence, skills and a love of learning. In entrusting your children to Feltonfleet, you are ensuring all of this and so very much more. This prospectus will give you a flavour of our School and will, I hope, help you make the right decision for your child. In the meantime, I welcome you, indeed encourage you, to visit us, ask questions and see our School community at work to help you decide.

Alastair G Morrison

Firm foundations The philosophy is simple: school should be as enjoyable as it is enriching, and every child in our care deserves the best possible start in life. Our role is to discover all our children’s natural talents, and to develop to the utmost their abilities, and from Early Years onwards we aim to provide the ideal foundation for a great education.

‘Pupils’ personal development is excellent, strongly nurtured by the school’s open, welcoming ethos.’ Independent Schools Inspectorate Report

Family feel, love of life atmosphere… Pupils are a happy, active and lively bunch.’ The Good Schools Guide

‘Through their genuine caring approach, teachers gain respect from pupils, fostering their interest and independence’. Independent Schools Inspectorate Report

Room to grow For learning, for exploring, for sport, for play, children need plenty of space to grow. At Feltonfleet we have 20 acres of landscaped grounds, every inch of which is designed with children in mind. It feels remarkably rural, not a car or non-school building in sight. Our children love it, and it helps make Feltonfleet a very special place to call school.

‘The academic standards are impressively high…with no hothousing – just plenty of fresh air’ Tatler Schools Guide

Learning for life Inspirational teaching makes for lifelong learning, and at Feltonfleet we aim for every child to feel motivated and inspired in the classroom. By Year 5 every subject is being taught by a specialist teacher. Children are encouraged to dig deeply into their subjects, but also to link up their knowledge and explore the connections between their areas of study, to develop a properly rounded understanding of the world around them.

‘Pupils benefit from a wide-ranging and balanced curriculum.’ Independent Schools Inspectorate Report

Beyond the classroom Younger children exploring materials outdoors, older children discovering the importance of team skills on a school trip – learning need not be confined to the classroom, and in a healthy school it will be happening everywhere. We believe strongly in such active learning. A wide range of subjects make regular use of the teaching opportunities provided by our outdoor environment, and regular school trips help children relate their classroom learning to the wider world beyond the school community.

‘Both the indoor and outdoor locations provide challenging and varied experiences and activities across every area of learning’ Independent Schools Inspectorate Report

Independent learners Children have an innate sense of curiosity, an inbuilt drive to question the how and why of the world in which they find themselves. At Feltonfleet we value this spirit of curiosity, and through our extended curriculum and range of teaching styles we encourage all our pupils to develop the ability to question, to consider, to think for themselves. We are preparing children for the future demands of a rapidly changing world, and thinking skills and independence of mind will be invaluable tools in life.

‘They are highly efficient learners and have exemplary attitudes to learning.’ Independent Schools Inspectorate Report

The boarding option Cosy, informal and very much a home from home, the boarding house adds a very distinctive extra dimension to the school. Whether for the full Monday-Thursday week or with a flexi-boarding combination of nights, boarders benefit greatly from the independence, camaraderie and opportunity for extra study or activities that the boarding experience offers. We also offer a range of Day boarding options that allow our day pupils to join in with any combination of meals and activities such as breakfast or supper followed by a study period. Flexibility and choice are definitely the watchwords here.

‘Boarders are extremely happy and thrive within the highly caring and supportive environment’ Independent Schools Inspectorate Report

Great sports Physical activity should be a vital part of life for any child, and we encourage every boy and girl to participate to the maximum in sport at Feltonfleet. Excellent facilities and expert coaching in a wide variety of games mean our children are extremely successful in competition, but they are always encouraged to place the team above the individual, and the importance of good sportsmanship and fair play are equally stressed. Above all sport here is inclusive, with participation at every level paramount, and every child enjoying the widest possible opportunity to competitively represent the school.

‘Sport is an incredibly important part of a Feltonfleet child’s life.’ The Good Schools Guide

Creative spirit Drama and Dance for self-confidence and self-awareness, Music for discipline and creativity, Art for the imaginative exploration of ideas - for the unparalleled benefits they bring, every child has a right to the fullest possible artistic and creative education, and specialist arts teaching for all our pupils has a very high priority at Feltonfleet.

‘Pupils show high levels of skill in the creative and performing arts.’ Independent Schools Inspectorate Report

A caring community A strong and effective pastoral care system, grown-ups the children can talk to, a good rapport between the age groups and excellent home-school communications mean children can feel happy and secure in a strong and caring community. Visitors often remark on how happy and well-mannered our children are, and the importance of courtesy and thoughtfulness towards others are emphasised throughout the school.

‘A caring, nurturing and supportive environment.’ The Good Schools Guide

Achieving potential We have high expectations of our pupils. This means that with the right encouragement and support the more they will achieve. At Feltonfleet we aim for every child to reach her or his maximum potential, their talents identified and developed, and their achievements applauded. The recognition of achievements is a vital part of Feltonfleet life and there is a strong culture of celebration throughout the school.

“Pupils get lots of praise and encouragement from staff… every individual is encouraged and supported to achieve her or his potential.” The Good Schools Guide

Preparation for life Our pupils gain entry - and frequently scholarships - to a wide variety of leading day and boarding senior schools: well balanced, good natured, self-confident and ready for the challenges to come, they are highly thought of in senior school circles. As a prep school our role is to prepare children with the firm foundations on which to build successful and constructive lives, and the continuing affection in which the school is held by our past pupils is a measure of what we have achieved.

‘Each year Feltonfleet pupils arrive at Cranleigh imbued with a mature attitude and a spirit of endeavour and success.’ Guy Waller, Headmaster Cranleigh School

Parent of a Year 8 Leaver

When I joined Feltonfleet, I was hiding in a shadow of nerves. This school has really brought me out of my shell. I count myself very lucky to have been here for ten years and to have come so far academically and made so many wonderful friends. I feel well prepared to start senior school and build on all that I’ve learned here. Dan, Year 8 Leaver

Both our children have thrived at Feltonfleet and I cannot imagine any other school providing so much support and so many opportunities for them to enjoy. They have had the best start to their schooling and are well prepared to face the challenges and excitements that lie ahead. We too feel blessed at being part of the Feltonfleet community and are grateful for the friendships we have made and the opportunities we have had to get involved in the life of the school and to celebrate our childrens’ achievements. Parents of a Year 8 Leaver

I only joined Feltonfleet in Year 7 but it has been an amazing and enjoyable experience! I am very sad to be leaving as it feels like I am part of one big family. The wisdom of the teachers and the friendships I have made will hopefully remain with me in years to come.Thank you so much for all your support and encouragement. Ella, Year 8 Leaver

Our daughter has excelled at Feltonfleet. Hardly a day has gone by without her enthusing about something she has done at school. Amongst all the other attributes that come to mind when thinking about out time at Feltonfleet, ‘happy’ really is the one that stands out and means most to me as a parent. ‘Happy’ a short but so very meaningful word to describe a decade.

Size and Location The school currently has 401 pupils, 223 boys and 178 girls. 321 pupils are in the Prep School - Years 3 to 8 (ages 7 to 13) - and 80 pupils are in Calvi House, Feltonfleet’s Pre-Prep department - Nursery to Year 2 (ages 3 to 6). Both Calvi and the Prep School together occupy a 25 acre site on the edge of Cobham, Surrey, conveniently located near the A3, M25 and A245 roads providing easy access to both South West London and the Walton and Weybridge areas. The school runs daily coach and mini-bus services for pupils to and from a number of destinations, including Wimbledon, Putney, Esher and Southfields. Timings of afternoon buses vary depending on clubs and sport. The majority of our children are day pupils, but the Boarding House remains a key feature of the school and on any weekday evening from Monday to Thursday (and some occasional Friday nights) anywhere up to 52 pupils will be boarding at school. In addition an increasing number of pupils join the boarders for any combination of breakfast, supper, or evening study periods and activities. We call this Day Boarding.

Facilities The school enjoys a superb range of facilities on its 25 acre site. Calvi House (the Pre-Prep department) was redeveloped in 2009 to give our youngest pupils the best learning environment. They enjoy a suite of spacious classrooms with interactive white boards, landscaped play areas, their own purpose-built hall, as well as a well-stocked Library and Digital Learning facility. A major development of the school’s sporting facilities in 2010 means that, in addition to an extremely well equipped sports hall, extensive playing fields and hard surface tennis courts, Feltonfleet boasts a 15m indoor swimming pool, and a floodlit all-weather Astroturf pitch. The school has its own rifle ranges for both air-rifle and .22 shooting. Beyond the playing fields a band of woodland is home to the eco-pond and a wilderness area for play and Science study. In the Prep School specialist Science, Digital Learning and Design Technology labs are used by all pupils and there are specialist facilities for Music, Drama and Art. The school has a purpose built Memorial Hall which is used for assemblies, evensongs and musical concerts. 2013 saw the re-development of our Junior Department (Years 3 and 4) which opened in early 2014. This self-contained block is now home to seven spacious classrooms whilst continuing to provide pupils with access to their own suite of lap tops and their own kitchen garden. In early 2015 a brand new state of the art 200 seat performing arts centre opened to complement the Drama, Music and Dance departments.

Nursery to Year 2

Sarah Shuttleworth Head of Pre-Prep & Assistant Head, Lower School Nursery and Reception We aim to stimulate and harness our youngest childrens’ natural curiosity and enthusiasm in order to build from the very beginning an interest and confidence in learning. At this early stage, learning is based on wide-ranging experience, much of it through play and exploration, focusing on the following areas: • Literacy

• Personal, Social and Emotional Development

• Mathematics

• Understanding the World

• Communication and Language • Expressive Arts and Design • Physical Development The children have French, PE, Digital Learning, Swimming and Music lessons from specialist teachers each week. Nursery and Reception have their own secure outside learning area. Reception should be seen essentially as a transitional phase during which the foundations are established and a move towards the more structured approach to learning of the National Curriculum begins to take place. By the end of the Reception year most children will have completed the Early Learning Goals and as their term 3 timetable has become more structured, they will make the transition into Year 1 without difficulty. Year 1 and Year 2 Years 1 and 2 broadly follow the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 with the addition of French, Music and Digital Learning taught by specialist teachers. There are daily lessons of English and Mathematics, the content of which takes into account the National Primary Framework. Lessons involve a focused teaching session for the whole class followed by tasks which are differentiated according to pupils’ abilities. Outside the areas of English and Mathematics, much of the childrens’ learning in Science, History, Geography, Design Technology, Art, Positive Living and Religious Studies is through half-termly topics. Year 2 are able to use the additional facilities of the Prep School for some units of Design Technology lessons. Both classes have their own space for outdoor learning. Teachers in Calvi House ensure that pupils make a smooth transition to the Prep School by regularly meeting with the Junior Department to discuss curricular issues.

5

Juniors - Years 3 and 4

Sarah Shuttleworth Assistant Head, Lower School In Years 3 and 4 the children are taught by their class teacher for Maths, English, Science, History, Geography, Positive Living and Religious Studies. The children are taught in sets for English and Maths in order to cater for their individual learning needs. Specialist teachers teach French, Digital Learning, Design Technology, Music, Drama, PE and Art. PE and Games take place three times a week with matches most Thursday afternoons and some Saturday mornings. Year 4 produce a play through their Drama lessons and many pupils take part in musical concerts throughout the year. After school activities are offered twice a week. Creative and Values Education (CaVE) allows the children to develop a range of skills including leadership, teamwork, decision making and creativity. The Junior School praises and encourages positive attitudes to living, learning and leading with our 3 PL awards and celebrates weekly their achievements in one of our assemblies.*

Middle School - Years 5 and 6 Amanda Wright Head of Middle School

In Years 5 and 6 teaching is by subject specialists in all subjects. Latin and Spanish are introduced in Year 6. There is additional support in Maths and English for those who would benefit from it. The Assistant Head, Teaching and Learning will discuss this possibility with the parents of those children for whom this is considered a sensible route. Setting is extended to include French and Science. Preparation for senior school pre-testing in Maths and English is structured effectively to allow pupils to show their potential to the senior schools. Creativity and Values Education (CaVE), Art, Latin, Design Technology, Drama, English, Geography, History, Digital Learning, Maths, French, Music, PE, Positive Living and Science make up the taught curriculum. Games take place on three afternoons, with matches on Wednesday afternoons, and some Saturday mornings. A varied co-curricular programme takes place on Thursday afternoons.*

Upper School - Years 7 and 8 Neil Kumar Head of Upper School

Specialist teaching takes place in all the subject areas, continuing from Year 6 and building to Common Entrance (CE) and Scholarship examinations. Additional Maths and English in Year 8 will be taught to those children for whom Latin or Spanish might be unsuitable. Games take place on three afternoons, and Wednesday and Saturday matches are a regular feature. Co-curricular activities take place on Thursday afternoons. Some children will be prepared for senior school Scholarship exams from the start of Year 7 while the majority work towards Common Entrance which is taken in June of Year 8 (see page 15).* * A full Curriculum Guide is available on the Parent Portal of the Feltonfleet website.

Sport and Activities Edward Smith Director of Sport Colin Boxer Head of Boys’ Games Melissa Jackson Head of Girls’ Games Sport is a very important feature of life at Feltonfleet and a very active Games department aims to provide the greatest possible opportunity for all pupils to develop skills and represent the school. In addition to curricular PE and organised sport, our pupils are encouraged to take a very active interest in extra-curricular activities, and there are a broad and exciting range of activities on offer. In Nursery much of the learning programme is activity-based, particularly in the afternoons, and many activities enable pupils to work outside as well as inside. In Reception, Years 1 & 2, there are 3 PE lessons a week for all pupils, whether on the field or astro, or in the hall or swimming pool, with all PE lessons being taught by specialist staff. A range of extra-curricular activities is offered to pupils in the Pre-Prep, including ballet, judo, violin and piano, and teachers offer a range of after-school activities and clubs for pupils in Years 1 and 2. Years 3 and 4 have two extended Games sessions a week, increasing to three sessions from Year 5 to Year 8, one session per week usually being given over to representative fixtures, a number of which are held on Saturday mornings. The full range of team sports are played at the school; for girls this means netball, hockey, rounders and lacrosse. Boys play football, rugby, hockey and cricket. The school has had great success at 7s rugby, and other games widely available at the school include tennis, swimming, athletics, cross-country and biathlon. The school has its own shooting range and a strong reputation in the sport, with seven pupils representing the country at U14 level in the past three years. A wide variety of clubs and activities designed to extend and enrich the core curriculum are available to all pupils in the Prep School. Where possible the children are able to choose on a termly basis which activities they take part in. Recently offered activities and clubs have included archery, art, athletics, ballet, basketball, brass ensemble, Chelsea Football Club soccer coaching, chess, senior choir, jazz dance, junior choir, cookery, current affairs, drama, design, environment, cricket, fencing, gardening, golf, Greek, judo, gymnastics, digital learning and trampolining.

9

The Arts Arie Coetzee Head of Art Georgina Smith Head of Dance David Swann Director of Drama Anne Turner Director of Music Drama, Dance, Art and Music are integral to the Feltonfleet experience of every child, and throughout the school a wealth of opportunities is provided for pupils to develop their skills and to enjoy participating as fully as possible in the arts. The school enjoys considerable success in gaining arts-based Scholarship awards at senior schools (see page 16). Art is provided in three forms – as a curriculum subject, as an extra-curricular activity and, for more advanced artists, as preparation for senior school Scholarships. Pupils learn to use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. They regularly make use of the school’s art facilities during lunch breaks and the department takes children to a range of Art galleries and exhibitions each year. Pupils are encouraged to participate in a variety of exhibitions and crosscurricular section competitions during the course of the year. Music The music department is a particularly busy one. In addition to the curriculum taught by specialist teachers, our visiting teachers give individual lessons each week to well over half of the pupils in the Prep school. A wide range of weekly ensembles including choirs, orchestra, various wind and jazz ensembles gives the children the chance to develop as musicians by playing with each other. Numerous performance opportunities are available in the extensive programme of concerts, both formal and informal. Each term children succeed in their individual music exams, and the more advanced senior pupils regularly gain Music Scholarships at Senior Schools. Dance The children study Royal Academy of Dance syllabus in Ballet (R.A.), free street dance and Imperial society in teachers of dance for Tap (I.S.T.D). Each year the dance department also has at least three trips to see either a ballet or a musical and this year we have visited the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and The Peacock Theatre. Children are also able to audition for the London Childrens’ Ballet each year and over the last 3 years a number of Feltonfleet pupils have been selected. Drama has a very high profile within the school and all pupils from Year 3 to Year 8 enjoy weekly lessons from a specialist teacher. Drama is also taught through creative learning in Calvi. These lessons aim to encourage physical and vocal selfconfidence and creativity, as well as developing teamwork skills and deepening the childrens’ understanding of dramatic devices and techniques. There is an annual Year Group Production for Year 4, Year 5, Year 7 and Year 8 which involves every child in the year group. Productions also take place frequently in Calvi. Recent productions include A Christmas Carol, Alice in Wonderland and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. There is also an annual theatre trip for Year 6. LAMDA is offered as an extra-curricular lesson and senior pupils often go on to achieve Drama Scholarships at their senior schools.

Boarding

Matt Rochford Head of Boarding Arie Coetzee Deputy Head of Boarding The Boarding House provides a home from home environment for up to 52 boarders from Monday to Thursday with some occasional Friday night boarding when there is a busy programme of weekend sports fixtures. (These will be published in the school calendar). Boarding is available to any child from Year 3 to 8. The House is run by the Head and Deputy Head of Boarding and their team of Boarding Tutors and Matrons. Mr Rochford or Mr Coetzee along with two house tutors and a matron are on duty each night and provide extensive social, pastoral and academic support. In addition to full boarding there are a variety of flexi and day boarding options (see below)

Option 1: Full Boarding Full boarders arrive on Monday morning, or Sunday evening by arrangement, and leave on Friday at 4.00pm (unless Friday night boarding is available for that week).

Option 2: Flexi-Boarding The flexi-boarding option allows children to board for a set night or nights each week throughout the term. Flexi-boarders follow the same routines as full weekly boarders. They have set beds and space to store possessions to save having to bring too much home each week.

Option 3: Occasional/Single Night Boarding There may be occasions when a pupil wants to try one night of boarding or parents are away and would like to leave their son or daughter to stay at school with friends. This option begins at 5.30pm all the way through to include breakfast the following day. Children can also be booked in for longer periods of time (space permitting).

Option 4: Day Boarding Day Boarding allows day pupils to join members of the Boarding House for morning or evening meals as well as supervised activity and study sessions. It provides parents with a more flexible option where children may need to arrive earlier or leave later than the core school day, and may be made use of on a regular or occasional basis as circumstances require. Any combination of the following Day Boarding options is available:

•

Boarders Prep Monday – Thursday Once the school day finishes, boarders start their prep sessions in two designated rooms, one for Year 5 and 6 pupils and one room for Year 7 and 8 pupils. When prep finishes, boarders are free to move on to the Boarding House.

11

Evening Meal Monday – Thursday Each night pupils take it in turns to lay the tables and wash them down after use. The evening meal is sociable, with a relaxed atmosphere and time for conversation amongst the children. It provides an opportunity for pupils of varying ages to mix and for discussions to take place with Boarding Tutors. It also provides an opportunity for day boarders to feel very much included in the boarding community.

Choices Programme Monday – Thursday The choices programme is available each evening from 7.00pm and gives pupils the opportunity to choose either a physical activity, or academic support (with our resident academic tutor, Mr Havelin), or some quiet time based in the Boarding House. The choices available are varied and cover a range of activities which make use of the school’s extensive grounds and facilities. The Boarding House also celebrates special events throughout the year such as Easter and Christmas with quizzes, parties and dinners.

Pastoral Care

Shelley Guest Deputy Head, Welfare and Community Feltonfleet is a happy, safe and caring environment where a very high priority is given to pastoral care, and close relationships and bonds are developed between the children and staff throughout the school. The division into Calvi, Junior, Middle and Upper Schools means that at each stage the needs of the children can be met so that pupils can continue to grow in self-confidence and independence. Our watchword is that every individual child really matters, and to ensure this is the case there is a strong and supportive pastoral framework running through the school. Class teachers and form tutors take a close interest in their pupils’ pastoral welfare. They are supported in their roles by the Assistant Head, Lower School and Year Leaders who have broad responsibilities for the welfare of children in each year group, and by the Deputy Head, who has particular expertise in dealing with pastoral and child development issues. The school has its own fully trained counsellor and two highly professional house matrons, with experience of working with young people, provide onsite specialist skills. There are frequent training and refresher courses on pastoral issues for staff, and information sessions for both parents and pupils on aspects of pastoral care and pupil welfare. There is a culture of openness and approachability throughout the school and parents are encouraged to contact the school if there is a concern about their child no matter how big or small. All staff are contactable directly by email and there is a strong feeling of teachers and parents working together to ensure pupils’ welfare. In the Prep School pupils are encouraged to reflect on pastoral issues and to understand how they can contribute to the well-being of the school community. There are particular opportunities for discussion in weekly Circle Time, Positive Living lessons and the pupils’ School Council also discusses pastoral issues. All pupils are encouraged to develop the school’s four core values; honesty, happiness, respect and responsibility and to follow the simple set of aims which are published throughout the school, and referred to as ‘The Feltonfleet Way’: • • • • • • •

Treat others as you wish to be treated Forgive and forget Share Listen carefully Be honest and truthful Be kind and helpful Be the best you can

Common Entrance and Scholarships Simon Pomeroy Assistant Head, Teaching and Learning Entry to Senior Schools

Pupils move on from Feltonfleet to a wide variety of senior schools, including all the local co-educational and single sex, day and boarding independent schools, as well as the major independent schools further afield. The Headmaster, in consultation with staff, will work closely with parents to ensure that the best choice of senior school is made to suit each individual child. The majority of our pupils leave us at the end of Year 8 via Common Entrance examinations. These are a set of examinations which are centrally set, but which are marked by the individual schools to which pupils have applied, with each senior school setting its own pass mark which pupils must achieve to gain entry. The full range of subjects is examined including English, Maths, Science, French, History, Geography, RS, and optional subjects of Latin and Spanish. Feltonfleet has an excellent record in external exams, and routinely gains entry for every pupil to their first choice of senior school. Academic Scholarships Several Year 8 pupils each year sit academic Scholarships to their chosen senior schools, and these children will receive all the preparation necessary to tackle these particularly demanding academic papers. Non-Academic Scholarships In addition to academic Scholarships, all senior schools offer Scholarships in several non-academic areas, which might include Music, Drama, Art, Dance, Design Technology or Sport. Senior schools may also offer an ‘All-Rounder’ award, for a child who demonstrates ability in a combination of disciplines. Pupils attempting an award will visit the senior school on an allotted day and be assessed for their ability and performance in their chosen area of strength. Senior schools set their own criteria for these awards, and they will request a written report or CV from the child’s prep school to augment the child’s Scholarship performance on the day. Feltonfleet pupils have proved themselves hugely effective at garnering scholarships in recent years, winning 16 awards in 2014, 22 in 2015 and most recently 19 awards. Feltonfleet 11+ Scholarships A small number of internal Scholarships are available annually to children in Year 7 who, on the recommendation of Subject Leaders, have consistently demonstrated particular promise in Academic areas, Dance, Design Technology, Drama, Music, Art or Sport. These Scholarships will vary in value and number and can be awarded at any stage, but the dual aims are to recognise outstanding potential and to encourage future achievements in Years 7 and 8. All award-holders will be expected to develop their talents to the full and to be outstanding role models during their last two years here at Feltonfleet.

The Admissions Process Jackie Williams, Admissions Registrar Making the Right Choice

Choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions any parent has to make, and it is vitally important that you know as much as possible about what we offer as a school before deciding whether we are the right school for your child. Below I will outline the typical admissions procedure from initial enquiry to a child’s first day at Feltonfleet, but I must stress that we will tailor our admissions process to suit the individual requirements of a parent. At any time please feel free to visit us or request more information to help you in your decision.

Initial Research – Prospectus and Website

The first stage is for you to study this prospectus, and visit our website (www.feltonfleet.co.uk) where you will find further information and get a flavour of the day to day life of our school. It may also be that you know a family or families who already have children with us; many of our pupils come to us following favourable reports on the school from current parents, and we are very proud of the positive word of mouth in our school community.

Visiting the School

If you are excited by the education we offer and feel that we might be the right school for you, the next step is to contact me to arrange a visit to the school, as well as asking me any initial questions you may have. I can advise you as to the places available at the entry point you are looking for. Once we have arranged a visit I will confirm your appointment.

Open Mornings

We run an Open Morning each term, details of which can be found on the school website. On arrival at an Open Morning all our visitors are met by the Headmaster, following which you will be shown around the school by one of our Year 7 or 8 pupils. During the tour you will have the opportunity to meet teachers and see pupils at work, as well as hearing about the school from a child’s perspective from your guide. After the tour you are invited to join the Headmaster, staff, governors and current parents for coffee. We would encourage you to bring your child and indeed any other family members who wish to join you, since the choice of school is very much a family decision.

Individual Tours

Should the timing of the next Open Morning not be convenient you may wish to visit us for an individual tour. During this visit you will meet the Headmaster, following which I will take you on a tour of the campus. This gives you an opportunity to see us at work on a typical school day, and again

will enable you to get a real feel of the school. We recommend that, to get the most from an individual visit, your child does not accompany you.

Registering Your Child

The next step is to register your child at the school; a registration form is included at the back of this booklet, and further copies can be downloaded from the Admissions section of our website. The majority of our pupils come to us either in Nursery (for which early registration is recommended), Year 3 (7+) or Year 7 (11+). It is possible, space permitting, for your child to join us elsewhere in the school. The admissions process varies depending on the entry point of your child, and I can advise you on the specific assessment requirements. I look forward to hearing from you.

Bursarial Support The Governors of Feltonfleet School are keen to provide bursarial support wherever possible in order to allow pupils to benefit from a Feltonfleet education, and meanstested bursaries up to the value of a 100% discount on the day fee are available. In addition the school, in association with the Royal Alexander and Albert School, Reigate, offers a special award, the Elmbridge-Gatton Bursary, which provides an opportunity for a pupil from Elmbridge Borough to join Feltonfleet in Year 7 as a fully funded boarder, before moving to RAA as a Foundationer Scholar. Please contact the school for more details of possible bursarial assistance.
