Baroque • Baroque is a style in which painters, sculptors, and architects showed emotion, movement, and variety in their works.
Architecture’s characteristics • In Baroque architecture, new emphasis was placed on columns domes, light-and-shade “painterly” colour effects, and volume and vacuum. • An example of Baroque architecture is the Cathedral of Morelia Michoacan in Mexico.
San Carlo Alle Quattro Fontane • It’s made by Borromini. • Façade: continuous flow of concave and convex surfaces. It’s threedimensional, almost sculptural. He designed it to produce an effect of movement, contrast and variety.
General characteristics of the baroque paintings - New genres such as landscapes and portraits. They enriched the iconography of religious subjects. - Radial composition. -Color, light and movement. The use of chiaroscure technique. -Sense of movement. - At this time, occurs an absolute mastery of painting technique, in oil paint on canvas and in fresco painting.
Caravaggio: Characteristics and "Conversion of St. Paul” • Title: Conversion of St. Paul Date: 1600-01 Author: Caravaggio Dimensions: 230 x 175 cm. • General characteristics of the author: He was a naturalist. To represent his pictures he was inspired by reality, using real models such as beggars, prostitutes. He introduced the game of contrast. Generally he was trying to represent what was divine in everyday life. His main technique was the oil on canvas. • Comment of the picture: The picture shows St. Paul fallen from his horse. The shadows make a scene and highlight the figure of St. Paul, lying on the floor, arms raised towards the sky. The boy's eyes are closed, but his face expressed no fear. It shows an absence that suggests another kind of presence, the divine force. The composition consists of a diagonal of the horse's leg and sustained by the servant, in the middle we find a diamond formed by the arms of Saul and the horse's feet.
