n 8 ounces of dried fusilli n 2 red peppers n 1 red onion n 10 cherry tomatoes n 7 ounces of canned albacore tuna n ½ cup of extra virgin olive oil n ¼ cup of white wine vinegar n 1 tablespoon of fresh lime juice n 2 teaspoons of spicy mustard n 2 teaspoons of honey n ¼ cup of fresh basil n salt and pepper Bring pot of water to boil to cook pasta. Add tablespoon or so of oil to water to prevent it from boiling over and pasta from sticking together. Add pasta to boiling water. When pasta is finished cooking, drain and rinse away excess starch with cold

water. Pour into large bowl and add 1 tablespoon of oil and combine. Cut peppers in half and remove seeds. Place skin side up in broiler pan on middle oven rack and broil for about 10 minutes or until black. Place in zippered, plastic bag, seal and let sit for a few minutes to loosen skin before removing. While pasta and peppers are cooking, make dressing. In medium bowl, combine ½ cup of extra virgin olive oil, ¼ cup of white wine vinegar, 1 tablespoon of fresh lime juice, 2 teaspoons of spicy mustard, 2 teaspoons of honey and ¼ cup of fresh basil. To make salad, cut cherry tomatoes in half lengthwise and thinly slice onions. Drain tuna. Combine tomatoes, onions, peppers, tuna, pasta and dressing.

NON-SMOKING BINGO HALL!

Beginning January 1st!

After five years of holding the monthly pickin’ at the Boys & Girls Club of the Highland Lakes, organizers Jane Markley announced the end of the popular event. At 84, Markley says she just doesn’t have the time or energy to keep doing it. For those past five years, musicians such as Bobby Wright (left), Jim Watkins, Ken Polk and Phil Boring kept people entertained. Markley says she’s grateful to all the musicians who took part over the years. COURTESY PHOTO

MARBLE FALLS — For almost a decade, Jane Markley and her friends gathered at different locations across the Highland Lakes to celebrate bluegrass and country music with a live “pickin’.” For the past five years, Markley hosted the event at the Boys & Girls Club of the Highland Lakes, but at 84, she decided it’s not longer feasible to keep producing the monthly event. “It’s been a wonderful time,” she said. “But, I just can’t do it anymore. I really hope somebody else will step in and keep it going. I just really want to thank all the musicians who came and the people who came and listened.” Pickin’ typically refers to the musicians performing bluegrass or country music live with guitars, banjoes, mandolins, dulcimers and fiddles. It’s an informal performance, in many cases, with folks often gathering on friends’ porches and restaurant patios or at any place they can find. Markley said the event started in a very informal manner. “We all started playing together at somebody’s house,” she said. “It would move around here and there. We would gather up in Oatmeal

many times, but, at one point, it grew to a point it just became hard to hold in a somebody’s home.” So, Markley began scouting out places that musicians could gather on a regular basis. “I said, ‘If I find you a place in Marble Falls, would y’all come?’ And they all said, ‘Yes’,” she said. The pickin’ eventually landed at the Boys & Girls Club of the Highland Lakes in 2008. It remained there until the last monthly performance in January. With the connection to the club, Markley also parlayed her husband’s association with Exxon into some fundraising for the youth facility. An Exxon foundation, she said, makes donations to nonprofits with which retired employees are associated. “So, along with the wonderful music, we helped out the Boys & Girls Club,” she said. Along with the musicians who took the stage, Markley said she wanted to thank Betty Boring and Millie Watkins, who co-hosted the monthly programs with her and helped in the kitchen. “We will miss all the loyal fans who came to listen and, especially, Exxon for all the many grants which bought sound equipment and 12 guitars for the (Boys & Girls Club),” Markley said. daniel@thepicayune.com

HLakes gets snapping for Texas State Parks Photo Contest BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

MARBLE FALLS — With seven state parks or natural areas in the Highland Lakes, you’re in the hot spot for the Texas State Parks Photo Contest. “This is one of our monthly activities that we’re promoting to get people outdoors and, hopefully, into our state parks,” said Rob McCorkle of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “And, being the spring, this is one of the best times to be visiting the state parks and taking photos.” The contest runs March 1 through April 30 with a number of prizes up for grabs. It’s open to everybody 18 years of age or older with the exception of TPWD employees. The photos must have been taken in a state park, a historic park or a natural area. “In the Highland Lakes, you have a lot of great parks to explore and take photos in,” McCorkle said. And, he should know. McCorkle is one of the few people who can lay claim to the fact he’s visited every state park in the state. McCorkle said he hopes the contest will encourage people to visit the parks. “I think once people get out into the parks, they’ll want to go back,” he said. In the Highland Lakes, photographers can explore Inks Lake State Park, Longhorn Cavern State Park, Pedernales Falls State Park, LBJ State Park and Historic Site, Blanco River State Park, Colorado Bend State Park and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Photos entries must be posted on the Texas State Parks Photo Contest page on Flickr at www.flickr.com/ groups/2194533@N22, where you also can find a complete list of rules and prizes. You also can visit www.texasstate parks.org/photography and follow the links. Winners will be contacted on or near May 15. With so many options, it might be overwhelming or difficult to decide what to photograph. One way to get some great photographs is to focus (no pun intended) on a particular theme, idea or concept. Instead of walking through a park just snapping photos as you go, consider concentrating on a specific theme such as “children and grandparents exploring the outdoors,” “the fly-fishing experience” or “evenings in the park.” This way, it puts parameters on your photographic outing. While you might initially believe it limits your creativity, you’ll actually find it allows you to come away with stronger photos because you have a photographic purpose. daniel@thepicayune.com
