Federico Baiocco - Landscape Architecture School Portfolio

My name is Federico Baiocco; I’m a creative and enthusiastic Italian guy adventuring in the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture. After wandering around the world for a long time, pushed by curiosity and hunger for discovery, I settled in Aotearoa/New Zealand, where I professionally specialised in a construction trade.

The travelling fueled my artistic vein and keep inspiring my work, while the trade disciplined me and taught me that there is no satisfaction without sacrifice.

From the teaching of both travel and work, I decided to channel my energy into the carrier of landscape architecture, a subject that I love and believe to be a key tool for solving contemporary challenges.

I aim to become an urban designer to create naturepositive, liveable and universally accessible places to shorten societal inequalities aspiring for a better World.

Envision Cathedral Square

Location: Cathedral Square, Christchurch

Year: 2022

Subject: LASC215. Landscape Analysis, Planning and Design

Academic Year: 2nd Academic Year

The brief’s objective was to design a place responding to the necessity of creating a beacon for the city of Christchurch that could match ecological needs while sparking social interaction. The answer in the design presented was the creation of an urban park in the heart of the city with double purposes: revitalise a dormant Cathedral Square, and try to create a green corridor that would link the existing Hagley Park.

By clearing the area of private commercial buildings and converting the Cathedral into a historic attraction using structural glass as a remedial tool, the design aims to empower the square as a new marker for the city and use the Cathedral as a symbol of rebirth, attracting tourists and hosting public life in the surrounding repurposed area.

Academic Year: 2nd Academic Year

The Ka Putahi Reserve is a natural resource in the northern part of Christchurch City. The place is undergoing a project of revegetation and installation of rongoa plants, with the need for future development respecting traditional values and improving its cultural asset.

In response, the design proposes multifunctional areas inspired by the stars of Matariki and Maramataka, that always had a strong connection between human beings and the spiritual realm. Each zone is linked to a star of the constellation depending on its purpose, renewing the kaupapa of the place, its cultural value, promoting the production of rongoa plants, food and mahinga kai, carrying on kaitiakitanga. The ultimate goal of every landscape architect is to design places using plants not only for their functional intention but to unite culture and carry on traditional values.

Academic Year: 3rd Academic Year

Canterbury is an agricultural region dominated by vast patches of farms that feed the nation and other coun tries worldwide. Embedded in the vast area, there is enormous potential to convert actual farming into a sustainable production of food and, at the same time, welcome new urban settlements. The project throughout the semester focused on two main parts: the first as an exploration with sketches of landscape forms and ideas, and the second as a design based on our research.

The exploration/sketch phase was inspired by the work of the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, with a tentative to reproduce a flow of ideas connected and evolved from the same concept in three categories: a floating city, a suspended city and a pattern city. Independently of which way you see the drawings, they can be related one to the other where the detail is mirrored, blended or evolved in the bigger picture. The final design is evolved from a painting of Kandinsky, “Several Circles”, which extruded represents a new form of self-sufficient, sustainable hubs, merging concepts utilised in other precedents such as “Bosco Verticale” in Milano and “Orongo Station farm” in Gisborne that convey functionality as food production and accessibility of resources but not forgetting aesthetics and beauty.

Edgeware Village Masterplan

Location: Edgeware, Christchurch

Year: 2023

Subject: LASC321. Urban

Academic Year: 3rd Academic Year

Edgeware is a suburb of Christchurch in the northeast of the city. After analysing and studying the area during the semester, the final task was to produce a master plan according to the urban needs and problems found during past research. The proposed masterplan answers the brief highlighting the necessity of improving green and public spaces, connectivity and structures. With the implementation of green areas, the goal is to support sustainability and nature-positive design, considering ways such as biophilic architecture to minimise the recurrent problem of flooding, while the implementation of public places is to spark social interaction and community engagement. Installing a network of permeable corridors and a solid central woonerf/shared space to break the continuity of the grid blocks is the response for a better mobility solution prioritising pedestrian movement. Lastly, the main part of the neighbourhood is reimagined with a modern multi-storey, mixed-use development to increase density and economic possibility in the area.

Specification and Technical Drawing

Location: Ka Putahi Reserve, Christchurch

Year: 2023

Subject: LASC393. Practicum: Applied Landscape Practice

Academic Year: 3rd Academic Year

A year later have redesigned the site at Ka Putahi; the task this time focused on small-scale and technical work. The project aimed to create an appropriate structure or furniture for the assigned areas. The design proposed is based on the response of the specific area providing ample seating furniture made with reclaimed building materials that could be used either for working or resting before/after visiting the reserve. The additional side planters have a structural function supporting the table and an aesthetic role in carrying flowering plants (kakabeak) to please the user ’s experience. The overall planting strategy uses native plants eco-sourced in the Canterbury region for better adaptability; and are placed to frame the pathways leaving space for entrance and visibility of the proposed seating area.

Drawings

Reducing drawing to lines and shapes is a rookie mistake.

Drawing is a form of art, and when mixed with music is transformed into meditation. When I harm myself with headphones and the right tune, all I can see is a blank paper converted into a meditation mat with pencil and markers as my repetition mantras. Lines and shapes endlessly dance on the cellulose to finally express emotions and convey messages.

The followings are some school drawings influenced by my travelling, cultural background, memories and good music.

LASC206. Landscape Planting Practice. Very Traditional drawing showing a concept plan in a pocket space situated in Falcon’s Landing, near Rolleston.

LASC211. Planting Design and Management. Drawing showing a concept visualisation realised for the improvement of the area of Lincoln’s lawn situated in front of the cafeteria of Lincoln University.

DESN103. Visual Communication. Drawing showing a foreshortening of Valparaiso, Chile. That detail reminded me of a part of my city in Italy.

Photography, Surfing and Travelling

When I’m not too busy with work or school (which happens very rarely), I indulge myself in surf sessions, a passion that started in New Zealand and tested my resistance to cold.

Surfing, other than trying your spirit, commitment, and fitness, gives you a sense of connection with the ocean, balancing enjoyment, harmony and respect.

Travelling and photography go hand in hand. For years I loved getting lost in various parts of the world, travelling with nothing fancy, just a backpack, to experience different cultures and befriend local communities. The best travel companion was my camera, which framed meaningful moments in my life, and my memory always goes back to those places when I see the shots.
