Welcome to the Fraser Coast from the Chief Executive Welcome to Queensland’s Fraser Coast, one of the most popular holiday destinations in the State, offering world-class island and marine experiences and a hinterland rich in heritage and military history. Each year thousands of international and domestic tourists visit us to get up close with humpback whales at the world’s first Whale Heritage Site and tour heritage listed K‘gari Fraser Island (the largest sand island in the world) where you can swim in fresh water lakes, hike in rainforest literally growing out of the sand and drive a 4WD or land via light aircraft on the beach. Our region, nestled to the north of Brisbane is also just a 40-minute scenic flight over Fraser Island and the Great Sandy Strait from Lady Elliot Island and the Southern Great Barrier Reef, teaming with spectacular coral and marine life. Offshore from Hervey Bay is one the most technically satisfying military dive wrecks on Australia’s east coast (ex-landing ship, HMAS Tobruk) and the three artificial reefs nearby are a diver’s paradise. The region is renowned for its unspoilt beauty in its natural state. It’s relaxed, family friendly and yet sophisticated, with quality resorts and accommodation to meet the expectations of today’s savvy traveller, where value for money and quality of experience counts most. The Fraser Coast has world-class drawcards and a proud history of working with the international tourism community. We aim to build strong connections within the tourism trade and are committed to assisting supplier businesses wherever possible to ensure international travellers continue to enjoy the authentic experiences our region provides.

DESTINATION HIGHLIGHTS

Fraser Island You’ll never forget the wonder you feel when you let your eyes drink in the beauty of the blue hues of Fraser Island’s Lake McKenzie, or gaze for the first time at the tops of the towering ancient trees in the Valley of the Giants or experience the thrill of zooming along 75-Mile Beach – which doubles as a four-wheel-drive highway and a landing strip for light aircraft. Fraser Island marked the 25th anniversary of its World Heritage listing in December, 2017 and was visited by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. This ancient place, the largest sand island in the world, offers incredible experiences. Sitting alongside modern resorts and attractions, carefully managed to preserve its pristine beauty, the island is home to relics from 200 million years ago, including the magnificent giant King Fern which reputedly has the largest fronds of any fern on earth.

for 123km and 22km broad at its widest part. The island has been built up over 800,000 years of tidal action - the world’s largest and oldest dune-building sequence. The traditional owners, the Butchulla people, named the island K’gari which means paradise. Birds are the most abundant form of animal life seen on the island with more than 350 migratory and coastal species recorded but visitors may also spot the famous Fraser Island dingoes, humpback whales off its coast, wallabies, possums, flying foxes, soldier crabs, turtles, dolphins, manta rays and dugongs. There are many ways to experience the island’s exceptional landscapes - take a self-drive getaway, join a guided tour, go on a camping safari, book a room at a resort or explore the island on foot through part or all of the 90km Fraser Island Great Walk. Daily barge services run to the island from Hervey Bay with a trip to the main resort taking about 50 minutes while the journey for four-wheel-drive enthusiasts to Wanggoolba Creek is about 30 minutes.

Crystal-clear, freshwater streams fed by the water table and rainforest trees literally growing out of the sand are matched with an, at times, alien landscape created by huge sand blows from winds belting across the Pacific. The clean air and smell of the ocean belie its strength, with the corroding wreck of the hospital ship Maheno a silent and constant reminder. Even the most experienced traveller will be inspired by this place, lying just south of the Great Barrier Reef and off the coast of Hervey Bay, stretching

DESTINATION HIGHLIGHTS

Hervey Bay Hervey Bay has an abundance of riches outshining many other tourist destinations in Australia. It is the stepping off point to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island, the location of some of the world’s best whale watching encounters and it has arguably the safest, family-friendly beaches on the Queensland coast. Add its proximity to Lady Elliot Island, the southernmost coral cay at the start of the Great Barrier Reef, world-class fishing, year-round swimming and boating and you can understand why hundreds of thousands of visitors flock here each year. Hervey Bay has five great beaches along its 16km Esplanade foreshore - each with tracts of beautiful sand looking out to calm, protected waters sheltered by Fraser Island. If you want to unwind, Hervey Bay has a laid-back lifestyle that welcomes barefoot walks along the beach, bicycle rides beside the ocean and eating fish and chips out of the paper wrapping with your fingers. In the Bay, life is built around the stunning esplanade dotted with parks, playgrounds, piers, picnic areas, barbecues, alfresco cafés, restaurants and shops.

The pier, which stretches almost a kilometre seaward, is one of Australia’s oldest and longest, celebrating its centenary in March 2017. In years gone by, the pier was a major point of departure for the region’s coal and sugar, and incoming fuel and manufactured goods. Initially stretching 1107m out to sea, the pier was partly dismantled in the 1980s when more than 200m of the structure was removed. A public outcry helped retain the 868m still remaining today and it is now a much-loved spot for tourists and locals for fishing, strolling and sightseeing. Walk through a doorway into the past at the award-winning Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum to see how tough and resourceful settlers needed to be to survive. Explore 21 buildings from those early days, examine 12,000 items and take part in interactive demonstrations. The Bay’s splendid natural setting, wide range of accommodation choices and attractions combine to ensure it offers something for just about everyone.

This water lover’s paradise is made for swimming, fishing, water sports and fun beach activities, no matter what the season. Encounters with humpback whales, turtles, dolphins and dugongs are possible through organised tours and by chance while out sailing or cruising on the water and also from the beach. Pods of dolphins are often spotted playing off the shoreline or at the end of It’s the ideal family getaway, a wonderful romantic escape and an the Bay’s iconic Urangan Pier, where you can also see schools of eco-adventure mecca. DESTINATION HIGHLIGHTS

Whale Watching From late July to early November, there is no place like Hervey Bay for breathtaking, up close and personal encounters with majestic humpback whales. Accredited in 2019 as the world’s first Whale Heritage Site by the World Cetacean Alliance, visitors who take tours with the Hervey Bay whale watching fleet will be secure in the knowledge they are supporting sustainable whale watching practices judged amongst the best in the world. A fleet of 10 vessels operating from the Urangan Harbour marina provide amazing experiences for more than 55,000 passengers each season. Scientific studies show that Hervey Bay is the only place on Australia’s east coast where the whales suspend their annual migration for up to two weeks when they reach the warm, shallow waters of our bay, protected in the lee of Fraser Island. Here the whales relax, play, and socialise, with mothers training their young calves for the more perilous journey further south. Half and full-day whale watching tours are available.

Hervey Bay was the first centre in Australia to offer commercial whale watching from boats in 1986. Now, more than 30 years later, you will benefit from the knowledge and experience of expertly-trained crews working on the region’s safe, highlyprofessional fleet. Vessels offer decks with 360-degree views, underwater viewing rooms, underwater cameras and hydrophones to listen to the whales sing. Many people return each season to watch the whales, describing their experience as spiritual as these giant mammals, some weighing up to 40 tonnes, come right up to the stationary boats and appear just as inquisitive about the whale watchers as the passengers themselves. Swimming with the Whales Early in each whale watching season, before the calves arrive, visitors to Hervey Bay have the chance to immerse themselves in a “whale wonderland” by entering their world and swimming with the whales. Following safety regulations, you can swim with the magnificent mammals tethered to a ‘mermaid line’ or sit on a duckboard platform that’s lowered into the water - either way, whales will be likely to approach you almost within arm’s reach.
