PREFACE In October 2010 two important FCI shows took place: the Eurodog in Celje (Slovenia) and the Asian and Pacific Section Show in Thailand. With over 10,000 dogs, the European title show managed to achieve an impressive total number of entrants. In Thailand, the number of dogs in the show was lower, but to make up for that the prizes for the victorious dogs over there were presented by the King of Thailand. We would like to take the opportunity to express our gratitude for this great honour. In his article, the former president of the Russian Cynological Federation, Dr Eugene Yerusalimsky, deals with the harmony to be found in the anatomy of a dog - a report which demands from the reader a certain knowledge of maths and geometry. The conclu-sion to be drawn from it is that in breeding only animals with a build which meets the "2:1:1 principle" should be selected. According to the author, it could in this way be guaranteed, as it were, that the anatomy of the offspring would turn out to have perfect harmony. How simple it seems to be to breed dogs with physical harmony, one only has to understand enough about the important ratios. This year's European Cup Trials for Hounds took place in Switzerland and I took the op-portunity to accept the organisers' invitation and to visit the event myself. Hounds from 11 different countries had gathered there and their handlers had the pleasure of experiencing two magnificent autumn days up in the mountains of the Canton of Valais. I was exceed-ingly impressed by the organisation of the event. In order to make a separate working area available to each dog, the hunting grounds were distributed over several valleys. The trial leader's office looked like the "headquarters" of some great military alliance. It is particu-larly worth mentioning that, in the shape of Christoph Darbellay, a top Swiss politician was available for the presidency of the organisational committee. For the excellent way these European Cup Trials were held, the French-speaking regional group of the Swiss Hound Club deserves any amount of praise and recognition.

PRÉAMBULE Deux expositions importantes de la FCI ont eu lieu en octobre 2010: l'Eurodog à Celje (Slovénie) et l'exposition de la section Asie et Pacifique en Thaïlande. Un résultat considérable de plus de 10 000 chiens a pu être obtenu lors de l'exposition européenne des titres. En Thaïlande, le nombre de chiens exposés était inférieur; par contre, les prix attribués aux chiens vainqueurs ont été remis par le roi thaïlandais. Nous souhaitons présenter nos sincères remerciements pour l'honneur ainsi rendu. Dans son article, l'ex-président de la fédération cynologique russe Eugene Yerusalimsky présente une étude sur l'harmonie de la morphologie des chiens ; cet article exige du lecteur quelques connaissances mathématiques et géométriques. En conclusion, il s'avère que, dans le domaine de l'élevage, seuls des chiens dont la morphologie correspond au principe "2:1:1" doivent être sélectionnés. Cela garantit, pour ainsi dire, que la morphologie des descendants sera parfaite sur le plan de l'harmonie. L'élevage de chiens harmonieux paraît être très simple. Il suffirait de connaître suffisamment les rapports mathématiques importants. La Coupe européenne pour braques a eu lieu cette année en Suisse et j'ai saisi cette occasion en acceptant l'invitation des organisateurs et en me rendant à cet événement. Des chiens en provenance de 11 différents pays étaient présents et leurs conducteurs ont eu le plaisir de participer à deux magnifiques journées d'automne dans les montagnes du canton du Valais. L'organisation de cet événement m'a fortement impressionné : Les territoires de chasse étaient répartis sur plusieurs vallées afin que chaque chien puisse disposer de son propre terrain de travail. Le bureau du res-ponsable du concours ressemblait au " quartier général " d'une grande fédération militaire. Il con-vient en particulier de mentionner Christoph Darbellay, un éminent politicien suisse, qui était à dis-position en qualité de président du comité organisationnel. Le groupe régional Romandie du club suisse de chiens courants mérite compliments et reconnaissance pour l'excellente organisation de l'épreuve de la Coupe d'Europe. La Coupe du Monde d'agility de 2010 a manifestement plu à tous.

Im Oktober 2010 fanden zwei bedeutende Ausstellungen der FCI statt: die Eurodog in Celje (Slowenien) und die Ausstellung der Sektion Asien und Pazifik in Thailand. An der europäischen Titelausstellung konnte ein beachtliches Meldeergebnis von über 10'000 Hunden erreicht werden. In Thailand war die Zahl der ausgestellten Hunde geringer, dafür wurden dort die Preise an die Siegerhunde vom thailändischen König überreicht. Für diese hohe Ehre möchten wir uns an dieser Stelle ebenfalls herzlich bedanken. Der ehemalige Präsident der Russischen Kynologischen Föderation, Dr. Eugene Yerusalimsky, befasst sich in einem Beitrag mit der Harmonie des Körperbaus bei Hunden, ein Beitrag, der vom Leser einiges an mathematischen und geometrischen Kenntnissen erfor-dert. Das Fazit daraus ist, dass im Zuchtwesen nur Tiere mit dem Körperbau nach dem "2:1:1-Prinzip" ausgewählt werden sollten. Dadurch ist sozusagen garantiert, so der Verfasser, dass der Körperbau der Nachkommen harmonisch perfekt ausfällt. Wie einfach scheint das Züchten harmonischer Hunde zu sein, man muss nur genügend von den wichtigen Verhältniszahlen verstehen? Die diesjährige Europapokal-Prüfung für Bracken fand in der Schweiz statt und ich nahm die Gelegenheit wahr, der Einladung der Organisatoren Folge zu leisten und den Anlass zu besuchen. Es waren Hunde aus 11 verschiedenen Ländern angereist und ihre Führer hatten das Vergnügen, zwei prächtige Herbsttage im Gebirge des Kantons Wallis zu erleben. Die Organisation des Anlasses hat mich stark beeindruckt: Damit für jeden Hund ein eigenes Arbeitsgebiet zur Verfügung stand, waren die Reviere auf mehrere Talschaften verteilt. Im Büro des Prüfungsleiters sah es aus wie im "Hauptquartier" eines großen militä-rischen Verbandes. Besonders erwähnenswert, dass mit Christoph Darbellay ein hoher Schweizer Politiker als Präsident des Organisationskomitees zur Verfügung stand. Der Regionalgruppe Romandie des Schweizerischen Laufhundeclubs gebührt für diese hervor-ragende Durchführung der EuropapokalPrüfung viel Lob und Anerkennung. PREFACIO En octubre de 2010 se celebraron dos exposiciones importantes de la FCI: la Eurodog en Celje (Eslovenia) y la exposición de la Sección Asia y Pacífico, en Tailandia. En la exposición europea por títulos se pudo alcanzar el notable resultado de inscripciones de 10.000 perros. En Tailandia, el número de perros inscritos en la exposición fue menor, pero el Rey de Tailandia realizó la entrega de premios a los perros ganadores. Deseamos expresar nuestro agradecimiento, aquí y ahora, por este honor recibido. El antiguo presidente de la federación cinológica rusa, el Dr. Eugene Yerusalimsky, trata en un artículo la armonía de la constitución física de los perros, un artículo que requiere una serie de conocimientos matemáticos y geométricos por parte del lector. La conclusión es que en la cría sólo se deberían emplear animales que se correspondan en su constitución física con el "Principio de 2:1:1". Con ello queda en cierto modo garantizado, según dice el autor, que la morfología de los descendientes sea armónicamente perfecta. ¿Cuán fácil parece ser la cría de perros armónicos, solamente es necesario comprender en su medida justa las relaciones de proporción importantes? La prueba de la Copa de Europa para bracos de este año se celebró en Suiza, y aproveché la ocasión para aceptar la invitación de los organizadores y asistir al evento. Habían llegado perros de 11 países diferentes, y sus guías pudieron disfrutar de dos magníficos días otoñales en las montañas del Cantón del Valais (Wallis). La organización del evento me dejó muy impresionado: A fin de que cada perro pudiera disponer de su propia zona de trabajo, los distritos estuvieron distribuidos entre varios valles. La oficina del director de pruebas parecía un "cuartel general" de una gran asociación militar. Cabe mencionar como hecho destacado la presencia de don Christoph Darbellay, un político suizo de alto rango, que ocupó la función de Presidente del Comité Organizador. El grupo regional Romandie del club suizo de sabuesos merece todos los elogios y el reconocimiento por la excelente realización de esta prueba de Copa de Europa. El Campeonato del Mundo de Agility 2010 tuvo gran aceptación por parte de todos. Un hecho que no sorprende, pues este

The Agility World Championships 2010 were clearly successful in pleasing everyone. This came as no surprise, it being already the third time that this popular event took place in Germany. It could almost go down as being sensational that there were participants from 34 nations. The fact that, of the three individual titles, two went to non-FCI countries (GB and Canada) has to be seen in a negative light. However, the team titles remained in FCI hands (Sweden, Belgium and Russia). For the exemplary way these Agility World Cham-pionships 2010 were put on, we would like to congratulate the VDH and thank them for such an exceptional performance. Karl P. Reisinger reports in an article about the twenty years during which he was the edi-tor-inchief of the FCI magazine. From now on there will be some changes. From 2011, this report will appear on the Internet as a Newsletter. In recent years, there have been certain things concerning the FCI magazine which did not go the way they should have gone. Often the magazines got left in the countries and were not passed on to the most important functionaries of the kennel clubs, as had been intended. As a consequence, the information often did not reach our target public. With regard to this, we hope to achieve an improvement with our Newsletter. Although at that time, it was Toyosaku Kariyabu who instigated the FCI magazine, the real "spiritus rector" of the journal from the time of its inception was, without doubt, Karl P. Reisinger. Above all, it is thanks to him that the FCI magazine was published at all and that it managed to exist over so many years. For this, we would like to thank him warmly. And I would also like to include in our thanks Ms Maria Zachs who, through all the years, requested and coordinated the articles from the countries and commissions. She was a consistently friendly and patient member of the editorial staff. Cela n'est guère étonnant sachant que cet événement apprécié était réalisé pour la troisième fois en Allemagne. La participa-tion de 34 nations peut être déjà qualifiée en soi de sensationnelle. Le fait que, sur les trois titres individuels, deux aient été décernés à des pays non membres de la FCI (GB et Canada) ne doit pas recevoir une interprétation négative. Les titres des équipes sont par contre restés entre les mains de la FCI (Suède, Belgique, Russie). Nous félicitons le VDH de cette excellente organisation de la Coupe du Monde d'agility et le remercions de cette performance exceptionnelle. Dans son article, Karl P. Reisinger nous parle des vingt années durant lesquelles il a travaillé en tant que " rédacteur en chef " du magazine de la FCI. Désormais, les choses vont quelque peu changer. A partir de 2011, les articles paraîtront sur l'Internet sous forme de " News Letters ". Au cours des dernières années, certaines choses ne se sont pas déroulées comme prévu en ce qui concerne le magazine de la FCI. Les magazines sont souvent restés dans un recoin des pays respectifs et n'ont pas été distribués aux principaux fonctionnaires des Kennel Clubs. De ce fait, les informations n'ont pas été reçues par le public-cible. Nous espérons obtenir à cet égard une amélioration grâce à nos " News Letters ". Toyosaku Kariyabu avait certes incité à la création du magazine de la FCI à l'époque, mais Karl P. Reisinger est toujours resté sans nul doute le " père spirituel " du magazine depuis sa création. On lui doit avant tout que le magazine de la FCI a pu paraître un jour et qu'il s'est maintenu durant un si grand nombre d'années. Nous l'en remercions très cordialement. Für diese vorbildliche Durchführung der Agility-WM 2010 gratulieren wir dem VDH und danken für diese außergewöhnliche Leistung. In einem Beitrag berichtet Karl P. Reisinger über die zwanzig Jahre, während denen er als "Chefredakteur" des FCI-Magazins tätig war. Nun wird sich einiges ändern. Ab 2011 wird diese Berichterstattung als Newsletter im Internet erscheinen. Manches ist in den vergan-genen Jahren mit dem FCI-Magazin nicht so gelaufen wie es hätte laufen können. Oft sind die Magazine in den Ländern liegengeblieben und nicht, wie vorgesehen, an die wichtigs-ten Funktionäre der Kennel Clubs weitergereicht worden. Dadurch kamen die Informationen oft nicht bei unserem Zielpublikum an. In dieser Hinsicht hoffen wir durch unsere Newsletter eine Verbesserung zu erreichen. Zwar hatte seinerzeit Toyosaku Kariyabu das FCI-Magazin angeregt, aber der eigentliche "Spiritus Rector" des Heftes seit seinem Bestehen war zweifellos Karl P. Reisinger. Ihm ist es vor allem zu verdanken, dass das FCI-Magazin jemals erschienen ist und dass es über so viele Jahre Bestand hatte. Dafür danken wir ihm herzlich. In unseren Dank einschließen möchte ich Frau Maria Zachs, die über all die Jahre die Beiträge aus den Ländern und Kommissionen einverlangt und koordiniert hat. Los títulos por equipos, sin embargo, se quedaron en manos de la FCI (Suecia, Bélgica, Rusia). Agradecemos al VDH el extraordinario trabajo en la realización ejemplar de este Campeonato del Mundo de Agility 2010, ¡felicidades! En otro artículo, don Karl P. Reisinger ofrece información sobre los veinte años durante los cuales ha trabajado como "redactor jefe" de la Revista de la FCI. Ahora van a cambiar una serie de cosas. he European title show T for the year 2010 took place in Slovenia. With respect to its size and number of inhabitants, the country is not amongst the largest in the FCI. However, experience has shown us that it is not only the size of a country which is important; in this case the position of where the show took place within Europe played an enormously important role. The central location is crucial along with the good fortune of being surrounded by nations with large canine populations. So, although Slovenia is not exactly in the heart of Europe, the country enjoys the advantage of being located in the centre of the East European countries and of being a neighbour to Italy, which has a large canine population. Since the turn of the last millennium, the aim has been to reach attendance figures of 10,000 dogs for the European title shows. These limits were first achieved in Paris in 2002 and in the years since then have not been significantly exceeded. And that is how it was this year too, where a total of 10,089 registrations was achieved. The number of registrations was higher than that of any other dog show held in Slovenia to date, in some cases hugely, and is certainly impressive in any international comparison. It is not only the number of participants which is important though, but also the nations which are taking part in the title show. In Celje 49 countries were represented, with the show-loving Italians out front with 2206 dogs and Russia with 1701. The remaining attendance figures were all up in the hundreds. From Slovenia itself there were 471 participants registered; this makes it clear how important the foreign registrations were for the organisers. The 97 judges who were appointed came from 30 different countries, with Slovenia alone providing the unusually large number of 30 experts. With regard to the numbers taking part, the top placed breeds were American Staffordshire Terriers, Golden Retrievers, Cane Corsos, Labrador Retrievers, Siberian Huskies and Chinese Crested Dogs.

L'exposition de la section Europe 2010 s'est déroulée en Slovénie. En termes de surface et de population, le pays ne compte pas parmi les plus grands Etats membres de la FCI. Nous savons toutefois par expérience que la superficie d'un pays n'est pas LE critère déterminant et que la ville (en Europe) où une telle manifestation a lieu joue un rôle extrêmement important. La situation géographique centrale et le fait d'être entouré de nombreuses nations cynophiles sont des facteurs essentiels. La Slovénie n'est certes pas vraiment située au cœur de l'Europe mais ce pays a pour avantage d'être au centre des pays de l'Europe de l'Est et, son voisin, l'Italie, est une nation extrêmement cynophile. Depuis le début des années 2000, les organisateurs d'une Europénnne espérent accueillir 10 000 chiens. Ce record a été atteint pour la première fois en 2002 à Paris et il n'a plus jamais été réellement battu. Cela a été également le cas cette année, avec un nombre total d'inscriptions de 10 089. Ce chiffre dépasse largement celui enregistré lors des expositions réalisées jusqu'à présent en Slovénie et rivalise sans problème avec ce qui s'est fait à l'échelle internationale. Le nombre total de participants mais aussi de nations présentes à un championnat de la FCI sont significatifs. 49 pays étaient représentés à Celje, en premier lieu l'Italie grande amatrice d'expositions (2206 chiens) suivie de la Russie (1701 chiens). Le nombre de participants restant s'est chiffré en centaines. 471 participants sont ainsi venus de Slovénie, voilà qui montre clairement l'importance des inscriptions étrangères pour les organisateurs.

Erfahrungsgemäß wissen wir jedoch, dass nicht nur die Größe des Landes wichtig ist, hier spielt die Platzierung des Durchführungsortes innerhalb Europas eine sehr wesentliche Rolle. Wichtig ist die zentrale Lage und die Gunst, von hundestarken Nationen umgeben zu sein. Nun, Slowenien liegt zwar nicht gerade im Herzen Europas, aber das Land genießt den Vorteil, im Zentrum der osteuropäischen Länder zu liegen und zudem Nachbarland von Italien, einer hundestarken Nation, zu sein. Seit der letzten Jahrtausendwende besteht für die europäischen Titelausstellungen eine Wunsch-Teilnehmerzahl von 10'000 Hunden. Diese Limite wurde im Jahre 2002 in Paris erstmals erreicht und wurde in den letzten Jahren nicht mehr wesentlich überschritten. So war es auch in diesem Jahr, wo eine gesamte Meldezahl von 10'089 erzielt wurde. Das Meldeergebnis übersteigt alle bisher in Slowenien durchgeführten Hundeausstellungen zum Teil um ein Mehrfaches und darf sich im internationalen Vergleich wirklich sehen lassen. Desde el último cambio de milenio, el número deseado de participantes para las exposiciones europeas por títulos es de 10.000 perros. Es herrschte an keinem Ausstellungstag ein wirkliches Gedränge in den Hallen, was wohl auch damit zusammenhängt, dass in Celje nur ein beschränktes Zuschauerpotential vorhanden war. The judging in the more than 50 rings went entirely to plan, not least because of the magnificently instructed stewards who worked excellently. L'organisation canine slovène est parvenue à organiser cette importante exposition de manière professionnelle, en évitant tout incident. Les jugements dans les quelque 50 rings se sont déroulés conformément à l'horaire, notamment grâce aux stewards extrêmement bien formés, qui ont accompli un travail de qualité. La performance des Slovènes mérite remerciements et félicitations. La prochaine Exposition de la section Europe aura lieu du 1er au 4 septembre 2011 ; il s'agira de l'une des expositions organisées dans le cadre du centenaire de la FCI. A few days before the competition some nations were already training in the hall in order to become accustomed to the natural floor surface (clay/sand mixture). In the end, all those who at first had been very sceptical about the floor were delighted by it. It was, quite simply, excellent. From the start, the opening ceremony gave everyone goosepimples when the teams marched in, led by the FCI delegates, and were greeted by the president of the Agility Commission, Jean-Paul Petitdidier, the VDH president Professor Peter Friedrich and Christa Bremer, the president of DVG which was organising the 10

event. Without doubt one of the highlights was the Comedy Dog Show by Leonid Beljakow which quite took over the arena. The dog world understood this show even in the absence of words. The amount of work involved in the show was well appreciated by all the spectators and it was rewarded with a standing ovation. World championships of this magnitude can only be brought off successfully when there are volunteer helpers available in the background. What was nice was that, along with the volunteer helpers from the home country, there were also some Agility sportspeople from Austria and Switzerland there who quite unselfishly offered their help and know-how and integrated themselves completely into the large team of helpers. That is not something which can be taken for granted; indeed, it shows the solidarity of the Agility people. The judges were also delighted with the organisation. During the complete world championships they had their “very own” field team. And this fact was highly praised in the follow-up discussions. The nominated performance judges constructed fair fields and knew the FCI examination rules exactly. They were correspondingly certain in their evaluations. The teams put on magnificent runs which, however, in the end were not enough to bring a title home, but they did very much delight the spectators. The runs from Lisa Frick (A) were most convincing and allowed her to repeat her success of the previous year as Individual World Champion in category L. In category M it was Natasha Wise (GB) with a Border Collie who managed to take the World Championship title and in category S, it was Jessica Martin from Canada with a Sheltie. With no faults, Sweden became the Team World Champion in category L, Belgium celebrated winning the title of Team World Champion in category M and Russia took the title in Small. Ce spectacle, sans parole, a démontré une grande compréhension du monde canin. Tous les spectateurs ont eu conscience du nombre d’heures de travail nécessaires à sa préparation et l’ont applaudi en lui réservant une standing ovation. Un championnat du monde de cette ampleur ne peut être réalisé qu’avec l’aide de volontaires. Outre des auxiliaires allemands bénévoles, plusieurs agilistes autrichiens et suisses ont proposé spontanément leur aide et leur savoir-faire et se sont intégrés dans la grande équipe d’assitants. Cela n’est pas évident et prouve que l’agility unit les nations. Les juges furent eux aussi enthousiasmés par l’organisation. Ils ont disposé de leur « propre » équipe de parcours durant tout le championnat du monde. Cela fut d’ailleurs souligné dans les commentaires qui ont suivi. Ils ont mis en place des parcours règlementaires et ils connaissaient parfaitement le règlement de la FCI. Ils ont fait preuve de la même assurance lors des jugements. Les équipes ont réalisé d’excellents parcours qui, en finale, n’ont toutefois pas suffi à remporter un titre, mais qui ont néanmoins suscité l’enthousiasme des visiteurs.

Eine Weltmeisterschaft dieser Größenordnung kann man nur dann erfolgreich über die Bühne bringen, wenn ehrenamtliche Hilfe zur Verfügung steht. Schön war, dass neben freiwilligen Helfern aus dem Inland auch einige Agility-Sportler aus Österreich und der Schweiz ganz uneigennützig ihre Hilfe und ihr Know How anboten, und sich komplett in das große Helfer-Team integrierten. So etwas ist nicht selbstverständlich, zeigt aber, dass Agility völkerverbindend ist. Auch die Richter waren von der Organisation begeistert. Ihnen stand während der gesamten WM ein „eigenes“ Parcours-Team zur Verfügung. Und diese Tatsache wurde in den Nachbesprechungen lobend erwähnt. Die nominierten Leistungsrichter bauten faire Parcours und kannten die FCI-Prüfungsregeln genau. Entsprechend sicher waren sie in der Bewertung. Die Teams zeigten hervorragende Läufe, die dann letztlich trotzdem nicht reichten, um einen Titel mit nach Hause zu nehmen, jedoch die Besucher sehr wohl in Begeisterung versetzten.

Uno de los puntos álgidos seguramente fue el Comedy-Dog-Show, de Leonid Beljakow, que fue capaz de encandilar a todo el foro. El mundo cinológico pudo comprender este espectáculo aun sin palabras. Todos los espectadores eran conscientes del enorme trabajo que implicaba este show, y lo honraron levantándose y brindando intensas ovaciones. CANINE SCIENCE FORUM VIENNA At the end of July 2010, almost 300 scientists from more than 30 nations took part in the biggest “Man-Dog/Canine” Congress to date, at the University of Vienna. The focus was on the relationship between two-legged and four-legged creatures which even today still remains largely a mystery in many aspects despite numerous new studies. The most recent findings show that the animals understand the person they are attached to much better than has been thought up to now, and that they are able to adjust to them amazingly well. And it is becoming ever clearer that dogs will have to be seen together with humans in one social and evolutionary “package”.

University professor Dr. Kurt Kotrschal has put forward a daring theory on this subject:

Il devient de plus en plus évident que le chien, tant sur le plan social que sur celui de son évolution, est attaché à l'homme. Dr. Kurt Kotrschal, professeur à l'université, établit une thèse audacieuse à ce sujet : " Les chiens ne peuvent pas être définis sans référence à l'être humain. Dans l'histoire de leur évolution et de leur domestication, les chiens sont à ce point adaptés à la cohabitation avec les humains qu'il est insensé de les étudier sans rapport avec ces derniers."

Casi 300 científicos de más de 30 naciones participaron a finales de julio de 2010 en el Congreso ”Humanos-perros/cánidos” hasta ahora más grande del mundo, en la universidad de Viena. El enfoque central radicó en la relación que existe entre los bípedos y los cuadrúpedos que, a pesar de múltiples estudios nuevos, en muchos aspectos sigue siendo un misterio. Los conocimientos más recientes indican que los animales comprenden a las personas que forman su núcleo vital mucho mejor de lo que hasta ahora se ha estado suponiendo y que tienen la capacidad de adaptarse a estas personas de una forma realmente asombrosa. In the history of their evolution and domestication, dogs have adapted so much to living with humans that it makes no sense to study dogs without including the relationship to their human partners.” Kotrschal bases this on the central significance of the social relationship. The latest studies from the “Wolf Science Center” also show that wolves do indeed retain their wolf-like behaviour when they live alongside humans but as soon as they live with humans and are trained, they gradually learn to adjust to and cooperate with “their” human partners – they are no longer “wild wolves”; in fact, as a result of their human relationship, they start to become “dog-like”.

Another study which was presented shows the following: humans continue to interpret the behaviour of their furry friends in a far too human way in most cases. For example, even if “mistress” and “master” are still so totally convinced that

Wie Forscherin Alexandra Horowitz vom Barnard College, Columbia University (USA) im Rahmen einer empirischen Untersuchung festgestellt hat, reagieren die Partner mit der kalten Schnauze eindeutig auf das Verhalten des Menschen und nicht auf ihr eigenes meist mit dem typischen "schuldbewussten" Blick. Hunde können sich nicht im herkömmlichen Sinn schämen, legen aber sehr wohl Beschwichtigungssignale an den Tag, die als schlechtes Gewissen (fehl)interpretiert werden können und oft werden. Along with the studies into behaviour, the researchers are also continually carrying out analyses in which the stress on dogs and humans in various situations is assessed. In practical terms, this is determined by the content of cortisol in the saliva; cortisol being a stress hormone. Amazingly, in stress situations which were set up outside the lab, such as a visit to the vet for example, the biologists found almost no increase in cortisol concentrations. However, both dog and owner react with stress very clearly when someone visits them at home. With regard to the dog, this can be explained relatively simply by territorial behaviour, but why humans show stress reactions in this situation remains a mystery. Paul Cech

Asimismo se pueden producir infecciones bacterianas. El pelaje puede volverse mate, seco y resquebrajadizo, y el pelo sólo crece lentamente. La alimentación óptima para una piel y un pelaje sanos contiene proteínas de alta calidad (a modo ideal proteínas animales), ya que los pelos, que consisten principalmente de proteínas, cubren del 30 al 35% de la necesidad proteínica diaria. Además la piel se regenera de forma natural ella misma cada tres semanas, por lo que también tiene una necesidad de proteínas alta. El bienestar de la piel está vinculado a determinados ácidos grasos esenciales. This year too, over 300 people from the field of international cynology gathered in the traditional Goldsaal to celebrate along with the VDH board members. Some top-class representatives from the world association were present. Hans Müller, Rafael de Santiago, Jorgen Hindse and Miguel-Ángel Martínez, i.e. the president of the FCI, the treasurer and two other board members were present as guests. The high point of the gala evening was the award of the Baron von Gingins Memorial Medal. This medal is the highest cynological award which the association presents. It is awarded for exceptional contributions to the promotion of German cynology to breeders and breeding judges. Le 16 octobre 2010, à l’occasion du Bundessieger de Dortmund, six personnalités - dont le président de la FCI, Hans Müller - ont été décorées de la plus grande distinction cynologique du VDH, l’association cynologique allemande. La soirée festive du VDH, qui a lieu chaque année lors du Bundessieger, est un des événements les plus importants de l’association. Cette année encore, plus de 300 personnes du monde cynologique se sont réunies dans la « salle dorée », riche en traditions, afin de se divertir avec le Comité Central du VDH. La fédération cynologique internationale (FCI) était représentée par des personnalités éminentes. Hans Müller, Président de la FCI, Rafael de Santiago, Trésorier, Jorgen Hindse et Miguel-Ángel Martínez, membres du comité général, comptaient parmi les invités. L’attribution de la médaille commémorative du Baron de Gingings a été le point culminant de cette soirée de gala. Cette médaille représente la plus haute distinction cynologique attribuée par l’association canine allemande. Elle est octroyée à des éleveurs et à des juges pour leur extraordinaire contribution à la promotion de la cynologie allemande. Cette année, six personnes dont le président de la FCI, Hans Müller, ont été honorées par le président du VDH, Peter Friedrich.

Auch in diesem Jahr kamen im traditionsreichen Goldsaal über 300 Personen der internationalen Kynologie zusammen, um gemeinsam mit dem VDH-Vorstand zu feiern. Hochkarätig war der Weltverband vertreten. Mit Hans Müller, Rafael de Santiago, Jorgen Hindse und Miguel-Ángel Martínez gehörten der FCI-Präsident, der Schatzmeister und zwei weitere Vorstandsmitglieder zu den Gästen. Höhepunkt des Galaabends war die Verleihung der Baron von Gingins-Gedächtnismedaille. Diese Medaille ist die höchste kynologische Auszeichnung, die der Verband vergibt. Sie wird für herausragende Beiträge zur Förderung der deutschen Kynologie an Züchter und Zuchtrichter verliehen. Con motivo de la exposición Bundessieger (ganador a nivel federal), en Dortmund, el 16 de octubre de 2010 seis personalidades fueron galardonadas con el máximo honor cinológico del VDH – y entre ellas el Presidente de la FCI, don Hans Müller La gala del VDH, que se celebra anualmente con motivo de la exposición Bundessieger, es uno de los eventos más importantes de esta federación. También este año se reunieron en la tradicional sala dorada más de 300 personas del ámbito cinológico internacional, para celebrar juntamente con el Comité Central del VDH. La federación mundial estuvo representada por altas personalidades. Estuvieron invitados los señores Hans Müller, Rafael de Santiago, Jorgen Hindse y Miguel Ángel Martínez, es decir, el Presidente de la FCI, el Tesorero y dos miembros más del Comité Central de la FCI. El momento álgido de la gala fue la entrega de la medalla conmemorativa del Barón von Gingins. Esta medalla es la mayor distinción cinológica que otorga la federación. Se concede a criadores y jueces de cría por sus aportaciones extraordinarias en pro del fomento y la promoción de la cinología alemana. Este año fueron seis las personas galardonadas por el Presidente del VDH, Professor Dr. Peter Friedrich, entre ellas el Presidente de la FCI, don Hans Müller.

Commission for Retrievers amendments in the Field-Trial Regulations and in the Guidelines for IWT The proposals were accepted. Commission for Show Judges Code of Commitment The Code of Commitment was approved with minor remarks. Breeding Commission Export pedigrees issued by a country different from the country where the breeder legally resides The FCI Office will issue a circular reminding about Art.18 of the Breeding Rules and will turn to the country involved. Amendment to the FCI Breeding Rules : artificial insemination (Art.13) The proposal was approved.

Commission des juges d’exposition : code d’engagement Le code d’engagement a été accepté avec de légères remarques. Commission d’élevage : Pedigrees d’exportation établis par un pays autre que celui dans lequel l’éleveur/l’éleveuse a son domicile légal. Le bureau de la FCI publiera une circulaire qui fait référence à l’art. 18 du règlement d’élevage et se mettra en rapport avec le pays concerné. Modification du règlement d’élevage de la FCI : insémination artificielle (art. 13) La proposition a été acceptée.

Kommission für Ausstellungsrichter/innen Verpflichtungskodex Der Verpflichtungskodex wurde mit geringfügigen Anmerkungen angenommen. Zuchtkommission Exportahnentafeln, die von einem anderen Land ausgestellt wurden als dem, in dem der Züchter/die Züchterin seinen /ihren gesetzlichen Wohnsitz hat Das FCI-Büro wird ein Zirkular veröffentlichen, in dem auf Art. 18 des Zuchtreglements verwiesen wird, und wird sich mit dem betreffenden Land in Verbindung setzen.

Comisión de cría: Pedigríes de exportación que hayan sido extendidos por un país distinto al país en que el criador/la criadora tenga su domicilio legal La oficina de la FCI publicará una circular en la que se hará referencia al artículo 18 del reglamento de cría y se pondrá en contacto con el país en cuestión. 19

Commission for Continental Pointers amendments to the Regulations + dogs registration matters The amendments (Art.II.13, III.13, IV.13 and I.26) were approved. Commission for Herding Dogs HWT and working class A non-working breed (according to the FCI breed nomenclature) passing the HWT CANNOT be entered in the working class at international FCI shows. It is up to the organisers of the HWT to inform clearly the participants BEFORE the event. Commission for Rescue Dogs Amended Regulations of the International Regulations for Team Competitions for Rescue Dogs (FCI/IRO) Amendments approved. Commission for Earth Dogs new regulations European Cup for Earth Dogs approved International Multiple Trial for Dachshunds approved (1 minor amendment) Regulations for CIT approved with some amendments

Standards and Scientific Commissions Moscow Watch Dog : this new “breed” as a pilot case for DNA (to establish that it really is a new breed). Approved Illustration with captions to be published on the back cover of all standards. Approved Advice against increased weight in heavy molossoid breeds The General Committee agreed with the following statement : “any change considered to be against the health of a particular breed will be rejected in any FCI standard”. 20

Commission des chiens d’arrêt continentaux : modifications du règlement Les modifications (art. II. 13, III. 13, IV. 13 et I. 26) ont été acceptées. Commission des chiens de troupeaux : HWT et classe travail Une race qui n’est pas considérée comme race de travail selon la nomenclature des races de la FCI et qui passe avec succès le HWT NE PEUT PAS être inscrit en classe travail lors des expositions internationales de la FCI. Il incombe aux organisateurs/organisatrices des HWT d’en informer très clairement les participants/participantes AVANT l’épreuve. Commission des chiens de sauvetage : modifications du règlement international des concours par équipes pour chiens de sauvetage (FCI/IRO) Modifications acceptées. Commission des chiens de déterrage : nouveaux règlements Coupe d’Europe pour chiens de déterrage : Acceptée Epreuves internationales multiples pour teckels : Acceptées (une légère modification) Règles pour le CIT : acceptées avec quelques modifications Commission des standards et scientifique Chien de garde de Moscou (Moscow Watch Dog) : cette nouvelle « race » sera le pionnier quant à l’approbation d’une nouvelle race via des examens ADN (afin de déterminer s’il s’agit réellement d’une nouvelle race). Accepté. Dessins illustratifs avec légendes publiés au verso de tous les standards. Accepté. Remarque relative à l’augmentation du poids chez les grandes races de molossoïdes. Le comité général approuve la déclaration suivante : « Toute modification considérée comme nuisible à la santé pour une race déterminée est refusée dans chaque standard de la FCI. »

Será responsabilidad de los organizadores de las pruebas de trabajo de pastoreo advertir de ello a los y las participantes ANTES de que se celebre el evento y de forma clara que no dé pie a confusiones. Scientific Commission The FCI scientific commission is allowed to get in direct contact with the equivalent bodies of the AKC and KC. The goal is to initiate a mutual strategy about the improvement of the health of pure bred dogs. Whether and when the commission will find it necessary to hold a meeting with these bodies, the FCI will cover the expenses of one or two delegates of the commission. Agreement on the principle of having one yearly meeting between the FCI Board and two delegates from the standards and scientific commissions (one from each commission) .

Commission scientifique La commission scientifique de la FCI a l’autorisation de se mettre en rapport direct avec les organes correspondants de l’AKC et du KC. L’objectif visé consiste à initialiser une stratégie commune en vue d’améliorer la santé des chiens pure race. Si la commission considère qu’il serait opportun d’organiser une rencontre avec ces organes, la FCI assumera les coûts d’un/d’une ou de deux représentants/représentantes de la commission. Un accord est trouvé sur le fait qu’une rencontre annuelle aura lieu entre le comité général de la FCI et deux représentants/représentantes de la commission des standards et scientifique (un représentant de chaque commission). OTHER DECISIONS In view of the incidents which took place on the occasion of the FCI World Championship for Utility Dogs (Hameenlinna, Finland) the Board decided to suspend the results of the event (the CACIT and the title in the solo competition). Circ.79/2010 : organisation of international hunting tests in another country : It is agreed that if a country did not organize a test similar to the one applied for over the last two years, this country can run this test abroad. If a specific trial is applied for to the FCI whereas no FCI international regulations for this specific trial exist, the FCI Office will sanction the event (with awarding of CACIT) with a request made to the organizing country to send the regulations which will be applied in 22

Wissenschaftliche Kommission Es ist der wissenschaftlichen Kommission der FCI erlaubt, die entsprechenden Gremien des AKC und des KC direkt kontaktieren. Das Ziel dabei ist, eine gemeinsame Strategie zur Verbesserung der Gesundheit reinrassiger Hunde zu initiieren. Sollte die Kommission es für nötig befinden, ein Treffen mit den entsprechenden Gremien abzuhalten, wird die FCI die Kosten für eine/n oder zwei VertreterInnen der Kommission tragen. Einigung basierend darauf, dass ein jährliches Treffen zwischen dem FCI-Vorstand und zwei VertreterInnen der Standardund der wissenschaftlichen Kommission stattfinden wird (jeweils ein/e VertreterIn von jeder Kommission). WEITERE BESCHLÜSSE Hinsichtlich der Vorfälle, die sich bei der FCI-Weltmeisterschaft für Gebrauchshunde (Hameenlinna, Finnland) zugetragen haben, hat der Vorstand beschlossen, die Ergebnisse der Veranstaltung (das CACIT und den Titel im Einzelwettbewerb) für ungültig zu erklären. 64th (Japan) passed away. Now this friend and colleague of many years has taken his final leave. He became well-known worldwide in cynological circles as a translator and interpreter under several presidents of the Japanese Kennel Club and the Asian and Pacific sections, starting with the almost legendary Toyosaku Kariyabu right up to the current president Takemi Nagamura. There haven’t been many important meetings of the FCI General Committee over the last 20 years not attended by Izumi Awashima. Along with his linguistic merits, he possessed a profound knowledge about cynological issues. He was not just an interpreter, but more a cynological consultant, particularly in the special fields of sports dog and working dog disciplines. In particular, Izumi Awashima made enormous contributions, both in Japan and internationally, in the field of Agility. The introduction and promotion of this type of dog sport in Japan were mainly due to his efforts. Izumi Awashima also contributed greatly to the national Japanese breeds, for example the Akita: he was a board member of the “World Union of Akita Clubs”. With the death of Izumi Awashima, international cynology has lost a valuable member who had contributed greatly to the building of bridges between the nations. We all mourn the loss of such a sincere and supportive friend. We would like to express our deepest condolences to his wife and the Japanese Kennel Club. En perdant Izumi, nous avons perdu un ami et un collaborateur de longue date. Il a acquis une réputation mondiale dans le monde cynologique en tant que traducteur et interprète durant les mandats de plusieurs présidents de l’organisation canine japonaise et de la section Asie et Pacifique, en partant du quasi légendaire Toyosaku Kariyabu au président actuel, Takemi Nagamura. Au cours des 20 dernières années, il n’y a guère eu de réunion importante du comité général de la FCI à laquelle Izumi Awashima n’a pas participé. Outre ses qualités linguistiques, il possédait de grandes compétences en matière cynologique. Il était non seulement interprète, mais aussi conseiller spécialisé en cynologie, principalement dans les domaines du sport et des chiens d’utilité. Izumi Awashima a connu de grandes réussites tant au Japon qu’à l’échelle internationale, dans le domaine de l’agility en particulier. Il est l’instigateur principal de l’introduction et de la promotion de ce sport au Japon.

Weltweit bekannt geworden ist er in Kynologenkreisen als Übersetzer und Dolmetscher unter mehreren Präsidenten des Japanischen Kennel Clubs und der Sektion Asien und Pazifik, angefangen vom fast legendären Toyosaku Kariyabu bis zum heutigen Präsidenten Takemi Nagamura. Es gab in den letzten 20 Jahren kaum eine wichtige Zusammenkunft des FCI-Vorstandes, wo Izumi Awashima nicht dabei war. Neben seinen sprachlichen Vorzügen besaß er ein großes Wissen in kynologischen Fragen. Er war nicht nur Dolmetscher, vielmehr auch kynologischer Fachberater, vor allem in den Fachgebieten Sport- und Gebrauchshundewesen. Insbesondere für den Bereich Agility hat Izumi Awashima in Japan und international große Verdienste erworben. Die Einführung und Förderung dieser Sparte in Japan war hauptsächlich sein Verdienst. Auch für die nationalen Rassen Japans hat Izumi Awashima große Verdienste erworben, zum Beispiel für den Akita, wo er als Vorstandsmitglied der "World Union of Akita Clubs" tätig war. Die internationale Kynologie hat durch den Tod von Izumi Awashima einen wertvollen Mitarbeiter verloren, der dazu beigetragen hat, internationale Brücken zu schlagen. Wir alle trauern um einen aufrichtigen und sympatischen Freund. Seiner Frau und dem Japan Kennel Club sprechen wir unser herzlichstes Beileid aus. Adquirió su prestigio internacional en los círculos cinológicos como traductor e intérprete, bajo el mandato de varios presidentes del Kennel Club japonés y de la Sección Asia y Pacífico, desde el casi ya legendario Toyosaku Kariyabu hasta el actual presidente, Takemi Nagamura. Durante los últimos 20 años apenas ha habido alguna reunión importante del Comité General de la FCI en la que no estuviera presente Izumi Awashima. Junto a sus dotes lingüísticas, tenía también profundos conocimientos en asuntos de la cinología. No sólo era intérprete, mucho más que eso, era también un asesor cinológico, sobre todo en los ámbitos especializados de la cinología deportiva y de los perros de utilidad. Izumi Awashima hizo grandes méritos tanto en Japón como a nivel internacional, sobre todo en la disciplina del Agility. La introducción de esta disciplina en Japón se la debemos principalmente a él. Izumi Awashima también hizo grandes méritos para las razas nacionales de Japón, por ejemplo, para el Akita, desarrollando su trabajo como miembro del Comité Central del "World Union of Akita Club". The presence of the FCI president Hans Müller was a particular honour for the event and in his ceremonial speech President Müller acknowledged the work with the hounds and expressed his delight that this event was being held in Switzerland.

The participants provided a colourful spectacle at the opening ceremony with their elegant hounds. Swiss Hounds as the national breed, Beagle, Segugio Italiano, Basset Hound, Alpine Basset Hound, Tyrolese Hound, Hamilton Hound, Finnish Hound, Dunker Hound, Halden Hound, Swedish Basset, all of these had come to take part in this prestigious competition. The trial hunting grounds around Nendaz, Val de Bagnes and Val Entremont – Ferret presented themselves in the autumn weather against a magnificent mountain landscape as a backdrop. However, not every hound managed to find and hunt a rabbit and, as a result, the experienced international judges from Belgium, Germany, Finland, France, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Austria awarded prizes to 6 solo hounds and 3 pairs. Prior to the competition, there was a meeting of the FCI Hound Commission, in which Curt-Christer Gustafsson was re-elected as president. The 2011 FCI European Cup Trials for Hounds will be held in Norway.

The idea and the impetus for a magazine which would keep our worldwide members informed came from the unforgettable Toyosaku Kariyabu, member of the FCI General Committee, president of the Asian Section and the JKC. A strong personality, whose second concern, that of creating an FCI anthem, never came to fruition.

C'est Mr Toyosaku Kariyabu, membre du Comité Général de la FCI, président de la section Asie et du JKC, qui a eu l'idée de concevoir un magazine qui permettrait de tenir informés nos membres dans le monde entier. Toyosaku Kariyabu, une personnalité étonnante, aurait également souhaité la création d'un hymne propre à la FCI, idée qui n'a toutefois jamais abouti.

As a result of my professional and cynological background, it was natural that the FCI General Committee would entrust me with carrying out the project.

Compte tenu de mon passé professionnel et cynologique, il ne fut guère étonnant que le Comité Général de la FCI me confiât la réalisation du projet.

In 1990 my firm developed a concept for a solution in the four official FCI languages. The General Committee voted in favour and in 1991 the first issue was published. The reactions to it ranged without exception from positive to effusive.

Die Idee und der Anstoß zu einem Magazin, das unsere Mitglieder weltweit informieren sollte, kam vom unvergessenen Toyosaku Kariyabu, Vorstandsmitglied der FCI, Präsident der Sektion Asien und des JKC. Eine starke Persönlichkeit, deren zweites Anliegen eine FCIHymne zu schaffen, nie realisiert wurde. Durch meinen beruflichen und kynologischen background war es naheliegend, dass mich der FCI-Vorstand mit der Realisierung des Projekts betraute. Meine Firma entwickelte 1990 ein Konzept für eine Lösung in den vier offiziellen FCI-Sprachen. Der Vorstand stimmte zu und 1991 erschien die erste Ausgabe. La idea y el incentivo de crear una revista que informara a nivel mundial a todos nuestros miembros vinieron del inolvidable Toyosaku Kariyabu, miembro del Comité General de la FCI y Presidente de la Sección Asia y del JKC. Una personalidad fuerte cuyo segundo deseo, el de crear un himno de la FCI, nunca se llegó a realizar. Debido a mi trasfondo cinológico y profesional, fue lógico que el Comité General de la FCI me encargara a mí la realización del proyecto. Mi empresa desarrolló en 1990 un concepto para una solución en los cuatro idiomas oficiales de la FCI. El Comité General lo aprobó, y en 1991 se publicó la primera edición. Las reacciones fueron todas positivas, sin excepción, e incluso entusiásticas. El primer relanzamiento fue en 1997. El concepto de redacción 29

Les simples photographies de chiens qui se trouvaient en couverture du magazine ont été remplacées par des illustrations basées sur le thème de la relation entre l'homme et le chien. Des personnalités connues accompagnées d'un chien ont ainsi été représentées dans plusieurs numéros. Nous souhaitions alors réaliser un transfert d'image de marque. The first relaunch came in 1997. The editorial concept was cautiously adapted; titles and make-up were made more contemporary. Five years later there was a new orientation. The front page was no longer dominated simply by dog photos, but rather by the relationship between humans and dogs. Over the last few issues we have started having celebrities with their dogs on the front page. By doing this we wanted to achieve an image transfer. The content was consciously intended to put over subjects about working together and living together with dogs. World and European championships for working dogs and sports dogs, demanding hound trials and articles on scientifically based breeding methods all documented the cynological variety in our association. The introduction of the BIS gallery met with great approval. At the same time my team was working hard to open up advertising opportunities in the magazine. At the start we could not get as much as we wanted. The companies we contacted did have national budgets, but hardly any means for worldwide advertising. It took a long period of cost-intensive dedicated work until we got our first successes. The increase in the editorial staff and the advent of advertising meant that the content had to be extended to 32 pages in 2005 and from 2010 to 40 pages. Long-term contracts with service companies, such as translation agencies and printers, allowed us to keep production costs more or less at the same level despite the increase in the size of the magazine. 30

Le contenu comportait volontairement des textes sur la collaboration et la cohabitation avec des chiens. Les coupes du monde et d'Europe de chiens de travail et de sport, des épreuves de haut niveau pour les chiens de chasse et des articles sur les méthodes d'élevage reposant sur des bases scientifiques documentaient la multiplicité cynologique de notre fédération. L'introduction de la section BIS a suscité un écho très favorable. Simultanément, mon équipe s'est efforcée de procurer des rentrées publicitaires au magazine. Les résultats escomptés n'ont pas été obtenus. Les entreprises contactées disposaient certes de budgets nationaux, mais n'avaient toutefois guère de fonds à affecter à une publicité mondiale. Un engagement de longue durée et coûteux a été nécessaire pour obtenir des premiers résultats positifs. Avec le développement de la rédaction et de nos annonces, le contenu a du passer à 32 pages en 2005, puis à 40 pages à partir de 2010. Grâce à des contrats de longue durée avec des sous-traitants comme des traducteurs et l'imprimerie, les frais de production ont pu être maintenus à un niveau pratiquement constant malgré l'augmentation du volume. Mon objectif, qui consistait à couvrir tous les frais par des recettes publicitaires, a été presque atteint bien que la structure du bilan de la FCI ne l'ait pas fait apparaître aussi clairement. Les contacts publicitaires ont donné l'opportunité de trouver des sponsors pour la FCI. J'ai soumis des propositions dans

Seit einigen Ausgaben waren auf dem Titel Prominente mit Hund zu sehen. Wir wollten damit einen Imagetransfer herstellen. Der Inhalt transportierte bewusst Themen der Zusammenarbeit und des Zusammenlebens mit Hunden. Welt- und Europameisterschaften von Arbeits- und Sporthunden, anspruchsvolle Jagdhundeprüfungen und Artikel über Zuchtmethoden auf wissenschaftlicher Basis dokumentierte die kynologische Vielfalt in unserem Verband. Die Einführung der BIS-Galerie fand große Zustimmung. Gleichzeitig bemühte sich mein Team, Werbemöglichkeiten im Magazin zu eröffnen. Das gelang anfangs nicht im gewünschten Ausmaß. Die kontaktierten Unternehmen hatten zwar nationale Budgets, jedoch kaum Mittel für weltweite Werbung. Es war ein langes, kostenintensives Engagement notwendig, um erste Erfolge zu erzielen. Mit dem Ausbau der Redaktion und dem Inseratenaufkommen musste der Inhalt 2005 auf 32 Seiten und ab 2010 auf 40 Seiten erweitert werden. Langfristige Verträge mit Zulieferfirmen wie Übersetzer und Druckerei konnten trotz Umfangerweiterung die Produktionskosten nahezu gleich halten. Meine Zielsetzung, die gesamten Kosten durch Werbeeinnahmen abzudecken, wurde fast erreicht, obwohl das durch die Bilanzgestaltung der FCI nicht so klar ersichtlich war. Durch die Werbekontakte ergab sich die Chance, darüber hinaus gehendes Sponsoring für die FCI zu lukrieren. Ich legte entsprechende Vorschläge dem Vorstand vor, der jedoch überwiegend reserviert reagierte. Trotzdem führte ich weiterhin Kontaktgespräche und schaffte gemeinsam mit Eukanuba und dem AKC die Basis für die Eukanuba World Challenge. Diese gemeinsame Plattform zwischen FCI und AKC kann als Beginn einer neuen Ära ge-

La página titular ya no estaba dominada por simples fotos de perros, sino por la temática de la relación entre el ser humano y el perro. Desde hace algunas ediciones se podían ver en el título prominentes con un perro. Con ello quisimos promocionar la imagen pública. El contenido transfería conscientemente los temas de la cooperación y la convivencia con los perros. Los campeonatos mundiales y europeos de perros de trabajo y de deporte, exigentes pruebas de caza y artículos sobre los métodos de cría con una base científica han documentado la versatilidad y la multiplicidad cinológicas que existen en nuestra federación. La introducción de la galería BIS recibió gran aprobación. A la vez, mi equipo se esforzó en proporcionar posibilidades publicitarias en la revista. Al principio no se consiguió en la manera deseada. Las empresas con que se había contactado sí disponían de presupuestos nacionales, sin embargo apenas tenían medios para la publicidad a nivel mundial. Fue necesario un esfuerzo prolongado y costoso para obtener los primeros éxitos. Con la ampliación de la redacción y el contingente de anunciantes, en 2005 se tuvo que aumentar el contenido de la revista a 32 páginas, y a partir del año 2010 a 40 páginas. A pesar de aumentar el volumen, los contratos estipulados a plazo largo con empresas proveedoras, como traductores e imprenta, permitieron mantener los costes de producción casi iguales. Casi se consiguió mi objetivo de cubrir todos los costes con los ingresos de la publicidad, aunque esto no se podía reconocer muy bien debido a la configuración de los balances de la FCI. Gracias a los contactos de la publicidad se creó la oportunidad de convertir el patrocinio adicional en lucro para la FCI. Presenté las correspondientes propuestas al Comité General que, sin embargo, reaccionó de

My target of covering the total costs with the income from advertising was almost achieved, although this was not so easy to see due to the structure of the FCI balance sheets. Through our advertising contacts the opportunity arose to gain some additional on-going sponsorship for the FCI. I put some suitable suggestions to the General Committee, however their reaction was predominantly reserved. Despite this, I continued with my contact discussions and, together with Eukanuba and the AKC, created the basis for the Eukanuba World Challenge. This mutual platform between the FCI and the AKC can be seen as the start of a new era which opens up many opportunities for working together in the future. Following this, it was possible to reach a financial arrangement with Eukanuba which includes direct financial support for the FCI which increases annually. From the start of the discussions, president Müller was open to this and thereby demonstrated his vision. He was also the one who contributed significantly to the realisation of the Eukanuba World Challenge, bringing to it all his experience. After the general meeting in Bratislava, vice-president Habig initiated the cancellation of the contract for the production of the magazine. He affirmed that the company Stratego would be asked to put forward its suggestions when a new invitation to tender was made. However, this did not happen; the magazine in this form will no longer exist in the future. From 2011, my friend, the photographer Karl Donvil, will be looking after this avenue of communication. For the most part via the Internet, but also with three printed issues per year. I wish him every success for this demanding task. It will not always be easy.

J'ai néanmoins eu d'autres entretiens de prise de contact et j'ai créé la base nécessaire à l'Eukanuba World Challenge avec Eukanuba et l'AKC. Cette plateforme commune entre la FCI et l'AKC peut être considérée comme le commencement d'une nouvelle ère qui a inauguré de nombreuses possibilités de collaboration pour l'avenir. Par la suite, une réglementation financière, qui avait pour objet le soutien financier direct de la FCI avec une augmentation annuelle, a été convenue avec Eukanuba. Le président, Monsieur Müller, était très ouvert dès les premiers entretiens et a prouvé ainsi ses capacités visionnaires. C'est lui également qui a beaucoup contribué à la réalisation de l'Eukanuba World Challenge en y engageant toute son expérience. Après l'Assemblée Générale qui s'est tenue à Bratislava, le vice-président Habig a initialisé la résiliation du contrat de réalisation du magazine. Il a assuré que l'entreprise Stratego serait invitée à soumettre ses propositions dans le cadre d'un nouvel appel d'offres. Cela n'a pas eu lieu, aussi le magazine n'existera-t-il plus sous cette forme à l'avenir. Mon ami, le photographe Karl Donvil, se chargera de ce moyen de communication à partir de 2011. Er versicherte, dass die Firma Stratego bei einer Neuausschreibung eingeladen würde, ihre Vorschläge zu unterbreiten. Nun, dazu kam es nicht, das Magazin wird es zukünftig in dieser Form nicht mehr geben. Ab 2011 wird mein Freund, der Fotograf Karl Donvil diese Kommunikationsschiene weiter betreuen. Hauptsächlich über das Internet, aber auch mit drei gedruckten Ausgaben jährlich. Ich wünsche ihm für diese anspruchsvolle Aufgabe viel Erfolg. Er wird es nicht immer einfach haben. Wie auch immer, falls notwendig, helfe ich gerne mit meiner Erfahrung, aber ich bin sicher, dass dies nicht notwendig sein wird.

Apart from walking and mingling with dogs, dog owners and suppliers of various dog products, guests of the event were able to witness a series of competitions. Three competing grounds were set up where each dog was able to show its quality and charms.

Les visiteurs ont ainsi pu se promener parmi les chiens et discuter avec leurs propriétaires et les divers commerçants. Par ailleurs, ils ont également eu l'opportunité d'assister à une série de compétitions qui se sont déroulées dans trois rings où chaque chien a démontré toutes ses qualités et son charme.

The Best in Show for the FCI Asian and the Pacific Section Dog Show 2010 was judged by Mrs. Renée Sporre-Willes, President of the FCI Standard Commission. Her first choice was Am. Can. Th. Grand Ch. Second BIS Pits King Arthur (American Staffordshire Terrier), owned by Mr. Kriangsak Europapat. On behalf of the Kennel Club of Thailand I would like to say that it was an enormous pleasure for us to have organized the show. To think what we have achieved in those four days - it has been a dream come true that our Kennel Club has hosted one of the most notable events in Thailand. When we held our National Dog Show we thought we had achieved our objectives. We will look back on this event with joy and happiness for a long time to come.

Tawan Nam Fah dang Pluang@ Siam (Thai Ridgeback), propriétaire : Kriangsak Europapat, a remporté la deuxième place et Th. Grand Ch. Island Pits King Arthur (American Staffordshire Terrier), propriétaire : Kriangsak Europapat, s'est placé en troisième position. Au nom de l'organisation canine de Thailande, je peux affirmer qu'organiser cet événement nous a procuré un plaisir particulier. En repensant à ce que nous avons accompli au cours de ces quatre jours, nous réalisons qu'en organisant un des plus grands événements en Thaïlande un rêve est devenu réalité. Le fait d'avoir organisé notre exposition canine nationale nous avait pourtant déjà convaincus d'avoir atteint nos objectifs. Nous nous souviendrons longtemps encore de cet événement avec joie et bonheur.

Der Best in Show bei der FCI Asien und Pazifik Sektionsshow 2010 wurde von Renée Sporre-Willes, der Präsidentin der FCI-Standardkommission, gekürt. Ihre erste Wahl war Am. Can. Th. Grand Ch. Kristari’s Khalua On Ice (Siberian Husky), Besitzerin: Oranuj Kanchanachusak. Den zweiten Rang erzielte Th. Grand Ch. Tawan Nam Fah dang Pluang@ Siam (Thai Ridgeback), Besitzer: Kriangsak Europapat, und der dritte Platz ging an Th. grand Ch. Island Pits King Arthur (American Staffordshire Terrier), Besitzer: Kriangsak Europapat. Im Namen des Thailändischen Kennel Clubs kann ich nur sagen, was für eine außerordentliche Freude es für uns war, diese Veranstaltung organisiert zu haben. Wenn wir daran denken, was wir in diesen vier Tagen alles erreicht haben, haben wir einen Traum Wirklichkeit werden lassen, indem unser Kennel Club eine der bedeutendsten Veranstaltungen in Thailand abgehalten hat. Schon mit der Veranstaltung unserer nationalen Hundeausstellung hatten wir ein erträumtes Ziel erreicht. Wir werden uns noch lange Zeit mit viel Freude an diese Veranstaltung zurückerinnern.

El objetivo del evento no sólo fue hacer publicidad para Tailandia como uno de los destinos más impresionantes de Asia, sino también y sobre todo la revisión definitiva de nuestra solicitud para la aceptación provisional de nuestra raza nacional "Thai Bangkaew", revisión llevada a cabo por Renée Sporre-Willes, la Presidenta de la Comisión de Estándares de la FCI, y por Paul Stanton. Aparte del trabajo de guiar a los perros y de una amigable cooperación entre perros, propietarios de perros y ofertantes de diversos productos para perros, los visitantes también pudieron contemplar una serie de competiciones. Hubo tres rings en la competición en los que cada perro tuvo la oportunidad de demostrar sus cualidades y su encanto. El Best in Show en el Show de Sección de Asia y Pacífico 2010 de la FCI fue elegido por Renée Sporre-Willes, la Presidenta de la Comisión de Estándares de la FCI. Y su primera elección fue en favor de Am. Can. Th. Grand Ch. Kristari's Khalua On Ice (Husky Siberiano), propietaria: Oranuj Kanchanachusak. El segundo puesto fue para Th. Grand Ch. Tawan Nam Fah dang Pluang@ Siam (Thai Ridgeback), propietario: Kriangsak Europapat, y el tercer puesto fue para Th. grand Ch. Dabei handelt es sich um ein Gesamtsystem, in welches die allgemeinen Indizes integriert sind, die den idealen Körperbau des Hundes ausmachen. Die Praxis hat gezeigt, dass der Großteil der besten Hunde einer Rasse mit dem BMH übereinstimmen - mit Ausnahme von Windhunden und Rassen, die degenerative Eigenschaften aufweisen, wie Bulldoggen, Pekingesen etc. sowie Rassen mit speziellem Körperbau wie Bobtails, Brasilianische Doggen etc. Durch den Einsatz des BMH ist die Bewertung verschiedener Hunderassen objektiver geworden. Außerdem konnte durch die Anwendung des BMH als selektiver Algorithmus die Verbesserung des Körperbaus von Hunden vorangetrieben werden.

En 1985 creamos el “Modelo biomecánico del perro” (MBP). Se trata de un sistema global en el que se encuentran integrados los indicadores generales que definen la constitución física ideal del perro. La práctica ha demostrado que una gran parte de los perros de una raza coinciden con los parámetros del MBP – con excepción de los lebreles y galgos y razas que presentan características degenerativas, como los Bulldogs, los Pekineses, etc., así como razas con una constitución física especial, como los Bobtails, los Dogos Brasileiros, etc. Mediante la aplicación del MBP, la evaluación de las diferentes razas de perros se ha vuelto más objetiva. Además la aplicación del MBP como algoritmo selectivo ha permitido llevar adelante la mejora de la constitución física de los perros.

The GS = (?5 - 1) : 2, which is the smallest root of the square equation 1 : X = X : (1 - X). Le but de ces nouvelles recherches consistait à définir les proportions anatomiques déterminantes pour les juges lors de l'évaluation de l'harmonie. Dans cet objectif, nous avons appliqué la " section dorée " en tant que principe de forme universel.

El objetivo de estas investigaciones ha sido fijar las proporciones anatómicas determinantes para los jueces a la hora de evaluar la armonía. Con esta finalidad, hemos aplicado el “Promedio Dorado” (PD) a modo de principio universal para determinar la forma, es decir, la morfología.

Let us enumerate the series of GP: 1. The chest depth makes the GS vs. the length of the spine from the top of the withers to the root of the tail. 2. The last rib divides the length of the body – the distance from the sternum to the buttocks – according to the GS. 3. The ratio between the body length and the length of the projection to the side surface of a straight line between the occiput and the foot of the hind leg, when placed behind with a vertical pastern, equals the GS. 4. The length of the fore leg vs. sum of the head and the neck lengths equals the GS. 5. The GS determines the volume of the muzzle, when measured under the eyes, vs. the scull volume. Thus the HMD determines the ideal dog proportions whiles the BMD shows how to reach them. Over the last 10 years, we often used only three BMD postulates for breeding: the principle 2:1:1, the principle of two horizontals and the principle of two verticals. Nevertheless, the conformation quality of new generation of dogs we have produced during this period was not worse than previous ones, when we had used the entire BMD. Moreover, the high degree of accordance of the HMD with a reduced BMD has remained at the same level. Due to that fact, we reconsidered the extent of the importance of those three postulates. Let us keep in mind that for the majority of breeds the height of the elbow joint equals half of the height at the withers. Let us imagine the picture of a dog set up in the correct standing position, viewed from the side. Now let us split that silhouette by two series of parallel lines, i.e. four verticals and four horizontals. The parallel

For the correctly built dog, the distances between the four verticals which cross the top of the withers, the back edge of the last rib, the front edge of the iliac protuberance and the root of the tail in consecutive order, are determined according to the ratio 2:1:1. Now let’s consider the horizontal that crosses the elbow joint. This horizontal line divides the height at the withers into two equal parts. For the correctly built dog the shoulder blade and the upper arm shall be practically of the same length and of the same, yet contrary slant, and therefore their vertical projections shall be equal. Hence, the distances between the vertical projections of the withers, the humeroscapular and elbow joints and of the base of the fore foot also create the ratio 2:1:1. Now for a more exact definition of the end position of the net according to the second postulate, i.e. the connection between the humeroscapular and hip joints as well as the elbow and knee joints. The front and rear angulations correspond on account of the principle of two horizontals. Those horizontals help to provide stability of the spinal arch and allow the dog to move forward while using the least effort to lift its centre of gravity. However, the real length and slant of the upper arm and upper thigh could be insufficient for the optimal functioning of the humeroscapular and hip joints. Optimization of those angles could be provided by the principle of two verticals, with the withers and the elbow joint being placed on the “front” vertical, and the root of the tail and the

C'est pourquoi nous nous sommes de nouveau penché sur l'importance de ces trois postulats. Pour mémoire : sur la plupart des races, la hauteur de l'articulation du coude correspond à la moitié de la hauteur du garrot. Imaginons un chien de profil en position debout correcte. A présent, nous divisons sa silhouette à l'aide de deux séries parallèles, à savoir par quatre verticales et quatre horizontales. Les parallèles de chaque série sont placées selon le principe 2:1:1. Si l'on prend un chien d'anatomie correcte, les distances entre les quatre verticales successives, qui croisent successivement la pointe du garrot, la bordure de la dernière côte, la bordure avant de l'ouverture de l'ilion et la base de la queue, correspondent au rapport 2:1:1. Venons-en à présent à l'horizontale qui croise l'articulation du coude : cette ligne horizontale partage la taille à hauteur du garrot en deux parties égales. Si l'on prend un chien d'anatomie correcte, l'omoplate et la partie supérieure de la patte avant doivent avoir pratiquement la même longueur et présenter le même angle d'inclinaison, toutefois opposé. Par conséquent, leurs prolongations verticales devraient également correspondre les unes par rapport aux autres. De ce fait, les distances entre les prolongations verticales du garrot, de l'articulation de l'huméroscapulaire et de l'articulation du coude et du pied de la patte avant correspondent aussi au rapport 2:1:1. A présent, voici la définition plus précise de la position finale du réseau conformément au 2e postulat, à savoir le lien entre l'articulation huméro-scapulaire et l'articulation de la hanche ainsi que l'articulation du coude et du genou. Selon le principe des deux horizontales, l'angle avant correspond à l'angle arrière. Ces horizontales veillent à la stabilité de la voûte dorsale et permettent au chien d'avancer et de soulever en même temps son centre de gravité en déployant le moins d'efforts possible.

Daher haben wir das Ausmaß der Wichtigkeit dieser drei Postulate noch einmal überdacht. Zur Erinnerung: Bei den meisten Rassen entspricht die Höhe des Ellenbogengelenks der Hälfte der Widerristhöhe. Stellen wir uns das Bild eines Hundes in korrekter Stehposition im Profil vor. Nun teilen wir die Silhouette mithilfe von zwei Parallel-Reihen, also durch vier Vertikale und vier Horizontale. Die Parallelen jeder Reihe werden nach dem 2:1:1-Prinzip gesetzt. Bei einem Hund mit korrektem Körperbau entsprechen die Abstände zwischen den vier Vertikalen, die in aufeinanderfolgender Reihenfolge die Spitze des Widerrists, den Rand der letzten Rippe, den vorderen Rand des Darmbeinvorsprungs und die Schwanzwurzel kreuzen, dem Verhältnis 2:1:1. Nun zu der Horizontale, die das Ellenbogengelenk kreuzt: Diese horizontale Linie teilt die Größe auf der Höhe des Widerrists in zwei gleich große Teile. Bei einem Hund mit korrektem Körperbau müssen das Schulterblatt und der Oberarm praktisch gleich lang sein und den gleichen, jedoch entgegengesetzten Neigungswinkel aufweisen. Somit müssen auch deren vertikale Verlängerungen einander entsprechen.

Somit ergeben die Abstände zwischen den vertikalen Verlängerungen des Widerrists, des Humeroskapulargelenks und des Ellenbogengelenks sowie vom Fuß des Vorderlaufs ebenfalls das Verhältnis 2:1:1. Nun folgt eine genauere Definition der Endposition des Netzes gemäß dem 2. Postulat, d.h. der Verbindung von Humeroskapular- und Hüftgelenk sowie von Ellenbogenund Kniegelenk. Durch das Prinzip der beiden Horizontalen entspricht somit die Vorderwinkelung der Hinterwinkelung.

Durante las últimas décadas con frecuencia sólo hemos aplicado los tres primeros postulados del MBP en la cría: el principio de 2:1:1, el principio de las dos horizontales y el principio de las dos verticales. La calidad de la constitución física de la nueva generación de perros que hemos creado durante este tiempo no ha sido peor que la de anteriores generaciones, en las que habíamos aplicado el MBP completo. Además el alto grado de coincidencia con el MAP se quedaba al mismo nivel aún con el MBP reducido. Por eso hemos vuelto a reflexionar sobre la importancia de estos tres postulados. Recordemos: En la mayoría de las razas la altura de la articulación del codo corresponde a la mitad de la altura de la cruz. Imaginémonos la imagen del perro, de perfil, en una posición erguida correcta. Dividamos ahora la silueta con ayuda de dos series paralelas, es decir, por cuatro verticales y cuatro horizontales. Las paralelas de cada serie se determinan según el principio de 2:1:1. En un perro con una constitución física correcta, las distancias entre las cuatro verticales - que en orden consecutivo cruzan la punta de la cruz, el borde de la última costilla, el borde anterior de la protuberancia ilíaca y la raíz de la cola – corresponden a la relación 2:1:1. Pasemos ahora a la horizontal que cruza la articulación del codo: Esta línea horizontal divide la dimensión a la altura de la cruz en dos partes iguales. En un perro con una constitución física correcta, la escápula y el brazo deben ser prácticamente igual de largos y presentar el mismo ángulo de inclinación, aunque en sentido opuesto. Así, también sus prolongaciones verticales se deben corresponder unas a otras. De esta manera, la relación de 2:1:1 también resulta de las distancias entre las prolongaciones

La longueur effective et l'angle d'inclinaison réel du supérieur et de la cuisse peuvent s'avérer toutefois insuffisants pour le fonctionnement optimal de l'articulation huméro-scapulaire et l'articulation de la hanche. L'optimisation de cet angle pourrait donner le principe des deux verticales étant donné que le garrot et l'articulation du coude se situent sur la même verticale. De même, la base de la queue et l'articulation du genou se situent sur l'autre.Les conditions pour la prolongation des bras supérieurs et des cuisses et pour un meilleur angle d'inclinaison, à savoir pour l'optimisation de l'angle des épaules et de la hanche, sont ainsi créées. Si nous plaçons le réseau sur le contour du chien, l'anatomie du chien est partagée par deux rangées de parallèles à l'horizontale et à la verticale, conformément à une loi : les intervalles entre les parallèles des deux rangées correspondent au même rapport de 2:1:1. Nous avons établi un Réseau Général d'Harmonie du chien (RGH) sur la base des premiers chiffres Fibonacci 1, 1, 2. Il est à présent clair que l'harmonie de la conformation des chiens repose sur ces chiffres. D'après nos expériences avec différentes races, les reins longs et les cuisses courtes correspondent aux insuffisances extérieures les plus répandues. Sur la base de nos statistiques, les reins et les cuisses varient le plus. La tendance va vers un allongement des reins et une réduction des cuisses ce qui est dû à l'apparition des principes spontanés considérables qui visent la destruction de l'harmonie et la formation de formes primitives. Par conséquent, le réseau général d'harmonie est l'instrument avec lequel nous pouvons créer l'harmonie de la conformation des chiens et éviter la génération de formes primitives.

Diese Horizontalen sorgen für die Stabilität der Rückenwölbung und erlauben es dem Hund, vorwärts zu gehen und dabei mit dem geringst möglichen Aufwand seinen Schwerpunkt anzuheben. Die tatsächliche Länge und der tatsächliche Neigungswinkel des Oberarms und des Oberschenkels könnten allerdings für die optimale Funktion des Humeroskapulargelenks und des Hüftgelenks unzureichend sein. Die Optimierung dieser Winkel könnte das Prinzip der zwei Vertikalen liefern, da der Widerrist und das Ellenbogengelenk auf derselben Vertikale liegen. Ebenso liegen die Schwanzwurzel und das Kniegelenk auf der anderen. Damit werden Voraussetzungen für die Verlängerung der Oberarme und Oberschenkel und für einen besseren Neigungswinkel geschaffen, d.h. für die Optimierung der Schulter- und Hüftwinkelung. Wenn wir nun das Netz auf die Kontur des Hundes legen, wird der Körper des Hundes durch zwei Reihen von Parallelen horizontal und vertikal gemäß eines Gesetzes geteilt: Die Abstände zwischen den Parallelen der beiden Reihen entsprechen demselben Verhältnis von 2:1:1. Wir haben das Allgemeine Harmonische Netz (AHN) des Hundes auf Basis der ersten Fibonacci-Zahlen 1, 1, 2 erstellt. Nun wird klar, dass die Harmonie des Körperbaus von Hunden auf diesen Zahlen basiert. Nach unseren Erfahrungen mit unterschiedlichen Rassen sind lange Lenden und kurze Oberschenkel die am weitesten verbreiteten äußerlichen Unzulänglichkeiten. Gemäß unseren Statistiken variieren die Lenden und die Oberschenkel am stärksten. Tendenziell sind die Lenden verlängert und die Oberschenkel verkürzt, was auf das Auftreten von erheblichen spontanen Prinzipien zurückzuführen ist, die auf die Zerstörung der Harmonie und die Bildung primitiver Formen abzielen. Folglich ist das Allgemeine Harmonische Netzt das Instrument, mit dem wir Harmonie im Körperbau von Hunden schaffen und das Entstehen primitiver Formen vermeiden können.

Hemos confeccionado la Red General Armónica (RGA) del perro sobre la base de los números de Fibonacci 1, 1, 2. Ahora está claro que la armonía de la constitución física de los perros se basa en estos números. Según nuestras experiencias con diferentes razas, las regiones lumbares largas y los muslos cortos son las deficiencias exteriores más difundidas. ales que tienen como objetivo la destrucción de la armonía y la formación de las formas primitivas.

SPECIAL SHOWS ORGANISED IN 2011 AND TITLES AWARDED The FCI offered its five founding members (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and The Netherlands) the opportunity to organise a specific title dog show, in the framework of its centenary. The Austrian kennel club declined the offer because it celebrated its 120 anniversary in 2009. Consequently the General Assembly assigned them the 2012 World Dog Show which will take place in Salzburg.
