C

ybercrime has become one of the biggest threats to everyday life, not just to individuals but to industries all over the world. It’s now as complex and unpredictable as ever. To cope with the ongoing threat, organisations are moving away from simply building high walls to focused investment on forward planning, intelligence, real-time detection and response, all of which can be costly, time consuming and overwhelming. At the other end of the network connection, highly motivated hackers are acting like entrepreneurs in a world full of opportunities. They use simulation techniques to test which methods can evade regular protection systems, for instance anti-virus software. They target smaller organisations and public administrations which have limited resources for cyber protection or have long reaction times, and reuse some of the extremely powerful cyber weapons used by governmental organisations. On the industry side, the exponential use of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) within manufacturing has made it a prime target for cybercrime especially extortion attacks. Industry 4.0 and its use of IIoT technology for real-time data collection of production processes is

creating an additional risk due to the low maturity of cyber security protection devices. Another worrying trend is how ransomware is now a real issue for public sector organisations. With ransom sums rising dramatically in 2018, a growing number of organisations have been paying up. This isn’t sustainable, especially in the public sector, but banning ransom payments might deter extortion attacks and encourage investment in security designed to avoid them happening. Cyber-security should be assessed at board level and managed as part of an organisation’s corporate riskmanagement. Having a multi-skilled team who are able to collaborate internally and externally can also be the difference between survival or falling victim to cybercrime. No single department or organisation can fight cybercrime alone. It takes a collaborative effort from everyone in the business. Being prepared is key to overcoming a cyber-attack. It is not easy but knowing what your organisation could potentially face is the start of putting a successful plan of action into place. F

JCDecaux Expands Cinema Advertising Network JCDecaux Singapore announced an expansion of its cinema advertising network with the addition of two new cineplexes. Advertisers will be able to reach out to more cinema audiences with the opening of Shaw theatres in Jewel Changi Airport in the first half of 2019 and in Paya Lebar Quarter.

Mathieu Girardin, Vice President CMA CGM Asia Regional Office, accepted the award on behalf of the Group and declared: “We are very pleased to receive this award which highlights our commitment to Singapore, where we have established our regional hub for Asia-Pacific and where we have launched a series of initiatives and collaborations with homegrown maritime companies. The CMA CGM Group, a worldwide leading shipping group, has been awarded the International Maritime Centre (Corporate) Award at the Singapore International Maritime Awards 2019, which are organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). This award recognises the company which has contributed the most significantly to Singapore’s economy and to its development as an international maritime center.

Brands looking to advertise in cinemas will be able to select from 21 cineplexes islandwide, an increase from the previous range of 19 cineplexes. The opening of two new cineplexes will also raise the number of

halls from the current 151 to over 170 halls. Jewel, the first of the new cineplexes to open, is expected to be able to accommodate over 800 seats. The mall has opened its gates on the 17th of April an its live application allows visitors to find their way within the center and have a global view of the 300 shops, restaurants and hotels via/through their mobile. This futuristic mall of 365 000 sqm is also connected to the 3 airport terminals, houses an indoor forest on 5 floors and the biggest indoor fountain worldwide which is 40 meters high.

This outstanding project has won several prizes including the Mapic Award 2016 as Best Futura Shopping Centre and MIPIM Asia Awards 2016 as Best Futura Project! We have worked with our partner Weeswares and their great teams on the integration for this project to be a success.

The Future of Trade Credit Insurance In an interview with our Patron Member, Bhupesh Gupta, CEO Asia Pacific, Coface shares about the business of trade credit insurance, the company’s strategy in Asia, and the importance of Singapore to the organization.

Do share with us about your career at Coface. I joined Coface as the Chief Executive Officer for the Asia Pacific region since October 2016. Prior to this, I was the Chief Risk Officer for Asia Pacific of GE Capital, responsible for risk and credit oversight of businesses and joint ventures with consumer and commercial finance assets - at peak, of around $90B in the region. At Coface we have made significant improvements to customer focus and our expertise to drive smart customer outcomes. At the same time we ensure that we leverage our shared service center in Bangalore to drive efficiencies and project excellence while ensuring risk and client management remain decentralised and close to clients. As a result our turnover was the highest ever in 2018 and our profits significantly exceeded budgets. Both our client and intermediary surveys show a high level of satisfaction. We continue to drive focus in all these areas and hope to continue to drive strong business results across the Asia Pacific region

Could you tell us about Coface’s strategy in Asia?

Coface has offices in 13 countries in Asia Pacific. We are the first credit insurer to enter the Asian market and with the most extensive network in the region. Our strong local support provides our customers with the best services in terms of response time and local understanding of risks. As Asia is still the fastest growing region in world trade, we are

committed to provide services that enable our customers to trade safely with their trading partners in more than 200 countries even in existing difficult environments. In addition to credit insurance, we have also introduced business information services and debt collection services to strengthen our role as the partner of our customers in managing trade risks.

How important is Singapore to your organisation? Coface entered the Singapore market in 1994. It is the first country we started our business in Asia. We have been a Sponsor Partner of Enterprise Singapore’s Loan Insurance Scheme since 2004. Singapore provides an excellent base for our business. The ethos of the Singapore government strongly supports our own “Coface - For Trade” philosophy and approach. According to the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), about 4,200 firms have regional headquarters in Singapore compared to about 1,500 in Hong Kong and 500 in Shanghai. It is also the regional headquarters for many of our business partners like brokers and banks.

What are the challenges and opportunities for Coface in Asia? Trade credit insurance is more developed in Europe. It is estimated about 15% of European companies buy credit insurance. However, the penetration rate could be as low as less than 5% in Asia. The main reason is that the awareness of trade credit insurance in Asia is still

very low. Most of the companies in Asia still do not have a strong understanding of the importance of receivables risk management. One of our major challenges is to build awareness of the product and getting companies to understand how well our solutions can protect them and facilitate their trade. Accounting to WTO, Asia accounts for more than 28% share of world’s export reaching USD4,875 billion in 2017, which is the largest among other regions. The market is huge and gives us great opportunity to develop. Coface has more than 70 years of history in the trade credit insurance. We insure the unpaid receivables risk for over 2 million buyers in more than 200 countries. Our expertise in trade risk provides the most reliable protection to companies in Asia to trade with new and existing buyers in the world. In 2019, we also see surging political risks arising from Brexit, trade wars between US and China, and instability in Middle East which will have impact on international trade. Thanks to our strong economic research department, we are closely monitoring country risk in 160 countries and 13 sectors to ensure that we can provide the best advice to our customers on their trading partners.

Could you briefly share with us Coface’s credit insurance process? Trade Credit Insurance (TCI) is an effective financial risk management tool that protects a seller against losses from non-payment of a commercial trade debt. After our customers sign the TCI agreement with us, they will be given access to our on-line policy management system which they could apply for a credit limit of any buyer company in the world. Coface will then inform our decision to our client via the tool. Our client could trade with its buyer within the credit limit approved by

us. If the buyer defaults in payment or go bankrupt, our client can apply a claim and we will indemnify up to 90% of the trade amount. With strong protection on the trade receivables, our clients can focus on their resources to develop more business with new and existing buyers. Besides, TCI also secures the financial operation of our clients which can also help them get better financing.

Any latest initiatives in Singapore to share with us? Through discussions with local governing bodies, I recently agreed to relocate to Singapore and now Singapore is the Asia Pacific regional headquarters. As South East Asia is now the growth engine in the region, we are working on some new strategies to expand our development in South East Asia with the market access advantage of Singapore. We will also organise our annual flagship event ‘Country Risk Conference’ in Singapore in November.

As a strong supporter of the French Chamber, how would you describe its role for French companies in Singapore? I think the French Chamber provides a good platform for French companies to develop their business in Singapore. It provides different advisory services, business matching and networking opportunities for French companies in Singapore. We also join the annual Gala dinner and other events organised by the Chamber every year. We are proud to be a patron member of the Chamber again this year. F

th e wat e r cool e r ch at What time are you at your desk? – Generally between 9 and 9:30am, but I start working early in the morning - generally clearing emails received overnight so that I can reach office with a “lighter” inbox.

A business/management book you’re reading? – One of my favourite recent books is Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.

Who inspires you? – Actually many people I have worked with over the years. I have tried to emulate expertise and practical philosophy from many of the really good professionals I have worked with over the years. Cannot really pick one.

Your motto in life? – “Tender-handed stroke a nettle, and it stings you for your pains; Grasp it like a man of mettle, and it soft as silk remains.” When something needs to be done, approach it sensibly but firmly and drive execution – don’t take up things if you are going to be doing it half-heartedly.

Cybersecurity and the Healthcare Industry Do you have any exciting security projects or initiatives that you can share with us?

We believe that a detailed security policy that defines rules that limit access based on the time of day, the device in use, among other factors, is key to managing cyber risks. A secure digital infrastructure must be able to validate data, behaviours, and destinations, and it must automatically respond to threats. Control at the access level is clearly one of the most effective layers for network defence and, it’s never been more important. User and device authorization prior to connecting to a network asset is critical. The ability to quarantine suspicious activity and run health checks on devices can stop a breach before it happens. In addition to providing ALE customers with solutions that mitigate the risk of cyber attacks, our privacy by design approach adheres to European GDPR requirements to ensure that customer data is protected. We also build security into our own networks, for example, we recently implemented a multifactor authentication (MFA) process to protect employee email accounts from phishing attacks.

Today the healthcare industry is experiencing a spike in the number of devices and sensors coming into their facilities. Manually onboarding and configuring these devices is just not an option. Never mind the potential for human error. From staff, to visitors, to the actual medical devices, each one brings a potential security risk. Security breaches that impact patient data or medication records are not unique to any particular part of the world. The fact is, they are happening more frequently, everywhere, and they are impacting lives. At ALE, we believe in a layered approach to cyber security. At the foundation is a secure LANWLAN infrastructure. Next, security policies need to be defined for users and devices. Virtual segmentation of Internet of Things (IoT) is key to creating a secure environment. Layering in location-based services that identify the location of staff, patients, devices and assets can also help administrators keep their fingers on the pulse.

Who is Jumpster and why did you decide to concentrate on cybersecurity?

Jumpster is a business development and tech venture company based in Singapore. We help innovative companies to accelerate in the region by finding new customers and sales partners, and then co-investing to build their local entity. Amongst others, we are concentrating on cybersecurity as a key market sector in the region, because of the very high stakes it represents for businesses and government alike, and the increasing need for very innovative solutions to mitigate these risks.

Why have attacks been so successful? Cyber attacks have evolved from “Hackers in their garage” to much more advanced organisations of cybercriminals and even statecommanded ones. Fraud actors are now using cyber reconnaissance techniques to spy and select their targets, and automated tools (increasingly using AI) to create never-seen-before malware attacks (aka “Zero Day”) to achieve their goals. They are very well organized, and an entire value chain exists on the so-called dark web, where various types of data can sell between fifty US cents to tens of US dollars each. Bad actors are therefore pocketing large financial benefits and are extremely motivated to continue to bypass IT defenses.

Additionally, cyber criminals are making attack kits available for non-technical wannabe hackers to launch cyber attacks. This results in a rapidly increasing volume of advanced, evasive cyber threats.

How are businesses and government agencies responding? Many countries throughout the Asia Pacific Region have recently started to implement Notifiable Data Breach schemes: when a business suffers a data breach, it must notify affected parties and the relevant government body about data breaches which are likely to result in serious harm. Singapore, Australia are leading the way in that effort. At enterprise level, IT security is fast becoming a Board-level priority. But SMEs are still under-equipped to protect themselves, traditional security solutions are no longer up to the task when it comes to protecting organizations and skilled IT security professionals are in high demand, same as innovative tools that can support tomorrow’s next attack.

How is France perceived in Singapore for cyber solutions? France ANSSI and Singapore CSA have had a long-lasting relationship and strengthened their collaboration since the signature of a MOU in 2015. French technology providers are very well perceived, and mid to large companies have already paved the way, as confirmed by the presence and success of THALESGEMALTO, OBERTHUR,

SOPRA STERIA, OBS and we see now more startups and SMEs flourishing in the region as BERTIN, QOSMOS, SECURE IC, WALLIX, WEBDRONE… Also, Singapore attained in January 2019 the status of a Certificate Authorising Nation under the Common Criteria Recognition Arrangement, which is a real opportunity for French solutions already certified!

How is Jumpster participating in the cyber eco-system? Through the French Tech initiative, we are actively participating to the French Tech Cyber Community, that is gathering around cyber topics. In parallel to our activity, we are also tying strong relationships with local communities like ICE71, Div0 and Cylon, participating as mentors to their cohorts, introducing local startups to our network of potential investors and customers. It’s important to understand the challenges faced by the corporates and what type of technology would make sense to bring to the market. Attackers are wiser and wiser, but technology is evolving fast as well. Hence, we are seeking motivated and very innovative French cyber startups to accelerate in Asia-Pacific and facilitate their access to the region. We interrogate our channel partners and potential customers in the region if they would integrate such solution. We have a very pragmatic approach to be able to deliver real projects fast. F

Fighting Cybercrime: On the Defence With AI What is your approach at your organisation at Lazada?

How important is cybersecurity for Lazada? What are today’s concerns? Cybersecurity is an integral part of Lazada’s identity and a differentiator between us and our competitors. Nothing is more important to us than our customers - both buyer and sellers - and protecting their data is our responsibility. Lazada has been investing a lot in cybersecurity for many years in order to protect our customers data (we have millions of daily users). Today, our cybersecurity team is made up of 40 professionals and we are still growing. Nowadays, everything is interconnected and any software or system is vulnerable. We cannot rest on our laurels, thinking that we will never be hacked. Cybercriminals are well-organised and can attack from anywhere in the world through the internet. They sell personal data, credit card numbers and even Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) on the dark web in exchange for money. Companies who are not well protected will suffer from DDoS, intrusion, malware, etc. A challenge for a major e-commerce company like Lazada is to stay safe and secure. We need to be nimble enough to adapt to everevolving risks to protect the business. Also we operate at scale: we process huge amount of data and have to analyse in real time to pick up any malicious activity.

So our approach is to collect comprehensive and relevant data, define/implement detection algorithms and automated responses, analyse alerts for potential false-positive and sharpen our algorithms. To ensure we are always spot-on, we constantly test our defences with our cybersecurity teams.

What do you find the biggest challenge in safeguarding a cybersecure ecosystem for Lazada? One of our main challenges is to find cybersecurity professionals who can outsmart the bad guys who are trying to hurt us. Cybersecurity professionals, like Data Science specialists, are one of the most in-demand people today. As we rely massively on automation and artificial intelligence, we need to recruit the best and the brightest to run and implement the automation and train the AI. What matters most are the human brain and wits behind the machine.

For example during web attacks, we can block about 10 millions of malicious requests per month with our WAF ( Web Application Firewall). This technological innovation was developed by Alibaba. Our web traffic is automatically analysed by our big-data platform and machine learning algorithms to detect malicious traffic. When a vulnerability is detected and can be blocked by our WAF, it is completely automated. The only human intervention needed is reviewing potential false-positives (a false positive is when there is an alert triggered by a genuine activity) that has been detected by AI algorithms.

Standard approaches to cybersecurity do not work in our context. For example, our websites have thousands of pages, and the content changes daily. It is impossible to rely on a manual approach. Instead, we invest heavily on automation and artificial intelligence. There is hardly any need for human intervention as automation frees up the people and man-hours required to monitor alerts and respond to them manually.

Could you tell us about Thales and the business of cybersecurity?

What are the biggest cyber threats you have encountered here in Singapore?

Thank you! It was certainly a major milestone for us. Digital security is of increasing importance and relevance to customers in every sector of our business. Gemalto joins us with great talents and key capabilities in identity authentication and data protection technologies, putting us in a leading position in digital security – be it security software, expertise in biometrics, multifactor authentication or the issuance of secure digital and physical credentials. Let me give you two examples of how our customers can experience greater value from our combined portfolio of solutions. In the banking sector where we have helped banks to securely authenticate mobile and online transactions at lighting fast speed, together with Gemalto, we can now provide banks with adaptive authentication and even greater security using AI and advanced analytics. Another example is in aerospace where we are seeing the trend of connecting devices and things. Together with Gemalto’s IoT solutions, we can connect drones and pilots to Thales Traffic Management systems and ensure all information and data exchanged are secured, and drone identities are authenticated in real-time. In fact, the acquisition of Gemalto is one that is firmly in line with our ongoing strategy. Over the past few years, Thales has invested around 7 billion euros in the digital

What Singapore needs to do to combat the multi-faceted and rapidly-changing threat landscape, is to have an allrounded, comprehensive cybersecurity strategy. This includes having safeguards built-in from the onset, in the system architecture and ensuring defence systems are fail-safe by continually testing them as hackers are also constantly coming up with new techniques. Of course, a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy is nothing without skilled cybersecurity experts and citizens who are highly aware of cyber threats and risks. Aside from enhancing the technological capabilities, Singapore also needs to continue to develop the cybersecurity talent pool in the country. This includes developing the skills of veteran IT professionals for cybersecurity roles through the acquisition and exchange of knowledge and experience plus training the wider workforce to be more proficient in cybersecurity.

Congratulations on the successful acquisition of Gemalto this April! How does this change your portfolio in cybersecurity?

Some of the biggest cyber attacks we have seen in Singapore include the database breach of Singapore’s largest public healthcare group, SingHealth, where hackers stole information on 1.5 million patients. However, being a successful, developed nation with attractive assets, Singapore can be perceived as a prime target for hackers. Additionally, as methods used by cyber criminals to gain access into critical digital infrastructure, systems, and data become more sophisticated, Singapore needs to maintain a high level of vigilance on the digital security front.


Cybersecurity and the Railway Industry Eddy Thesee, VP Cybersecurity of Alstom shares about how cybersecurity concerns the railway industry and its latest efforts in the domain. How is cybersecurity related to the railway industry?

What has always been key to the railway industry are the core tenets of reliability and safety. Over the last few years, the railway industry has seen various deployment of technologies, and railway systems have become more vulnerable to threats and possibilities of attacks. From WIFI communication systems to external components used in the railways, new systems are opening up doors to risks, threats, and possibilities of cyber attacks. It is thus important that the railway industry looks carefully at putting in place cyberprotection and resilience measures, and deploy technologies to close these gaps. It is also key to deploy an efficient vulnerability management process to support the long lifecycle of our products and solutions in a fast changing world.

What are the latest efforts at Alstom regarding cybersecurity? The new challenge over the last few years has been to reorganise the delivery roadmap and maintenance of our products. This means making changes not only to the development in our products, but also in the way we are training people and introducing new technologies. One way where we go about doing this is finding existing best practices with industry partners; a notable example is an agreement we have embarked on with Airbus to introduce some aircraft best practices and standards in the railway business. At Alstom, we are certified CMMI level 3, which is a certification given to organisations able to operate homogenously across the world. This means that when we implement or redefine new processes, for instance in the context of emergency protocols, these processes are updated worldwide. When we implement new measures, we are careful to ensure that they are robust and well-trained, so as to be deployed everywhere.

Tell us more about your partnership with Airbus. What are the similarities between your industries? Well firstly, the aircraft and train industry are in the same business of moving people and goods. And both industries involve critical infrastructure. What is a core aspect of our industries - common to our DNA - is in fact, ensuring safety. What is different then is the level of standardisation in our practices and protocols. Processes are more or less more standardised in the aircraft industry, whereas it is more localised in the railway industry. Sharing an initiative like this has helped us bring together expertise from the transportation industry to ultimately meet a common goal, which has been our mission from the beginning - to move people safely and efficiently.

Are there certain cyberthreats that are more prevalent in France or Singapore than others? We are living in a connected world today, a worldwide system where everyone anywhere could be a target. It is absolutely true that in Singapore, communication systems are well-developed and cyber defence has been made a priority on a national level. But the dangers of cyber threats can be located remotely everywhere, seeing that all systems are becoming increasingly connected. The fact that we no longer live just in a physically connected world means that threats are more or less the same everywhere.

Are there special plans to implement your practices in cybersecurity in Singapore? Singapore is very connected and the communication systems are well-developed; therefore cybersecurity has been made a priority. In Singapore, we are collaborating with cybersecurity stakeholders, for example with the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore. We are very happy to introduce what we are working on in cybersecurity in Singapore, as the country would be a great showcase for such new technologies, and for Alstom to demonstrate how a mature, efficient, protective railway system can function. Webdrone technology has been successfully used to solve critical cases over the world in many different domains such as counterfeiting of luxury and life products (foods, beverages, cosmetics, pharmacy, etc.), human and wildlife trafficking, investigating on fraud or the root of an event… Three concrete examples: • Fake medicines Fake medicines are not only illegal drugs, it is a very important threat for health that kills hundreds of people every year. In addition, terrorists used it for financing their activities. A mission performed all over South East Asia detected and identified fake medicines vendors networks. • Illegal animal trafficking The world is dealing with an unprecedented spike in illegal wildlife trade, threatening to overturn decades of conservation gains. Ivory estimated to weigh more than 23 metric tons was seized in the 13 largest seizures of illegal ivory in 2011. Poaching threatens the last of our wild tigers that number around 3,890. Wildlife crime is a big business! Run by dangerous international Organized Crime Groups (OCG), wildlife and animal parts are trafficked much like illegal drugs and arms. The Webdrone platform has been used to monitor

forums, market places and the darknet to both evaluate the traffic and detect its agents. • Compliance Due Diligence More and more companies are attentive to deal with the good partner, to hire the correct person, to buy and merge with the company who which has no reputational issues (corruption, money-laundering, financing terrorism, fraud…) on the Market. High-level makers request us to investigate on the digital footprints of a person or a legal entity to assess the business opportunity or strategic hiring.

How are you using technology to fight cybercrime? Webdrone’s team developed proprietary web (clear, deep and dark) crawling technology, investigatory logic and parsing algorithms. It is a flexible configuration system where a specific mission is defined based on the ontology, the goals (the targets to detect), the connectors (websites, marketplaces, forums, etc) and the extractors (information from textual document, images, video…). Data-driven investigation engines called ‘virtual drones’ are launched to crawl the Internet and collect the data. The engine then recomputes in real time the best investigation plan and orchestrates the tasks. They act as a cyberinvestigator specialist but faster. The ‘virtual drones’ execute the investigation to find the documents, analyze and score them. If the information is interesting in the framework context of the mission, the extracted entities are returned to the investigation engine. At the end, the virtual drones draft links and map an unprecedented scope of online activities and criminal networks.

What are the costs of not doing enough to protect our business? Clients are partners, they are trained to use Webdrone’s system directly and the expertise is shared. Some of them prefer to outsource their investigations to the Webdrone’s team who works closely to define the strategy, debrief the results found and provide recommendations. At the end, it is the same common goal, to fight against illegality and immorality. The costs of not doing enough to protect businesses is to lose marketshares, to let the place to bad guys to sell untrusted products to your consumers, to not care on the future and let the Internet becomes a trashbin of fakes and immoralities… But the key cost is to affect the reputation of the company / individual built hardly during several years and which could be lost within few days.

Prospection MissionS The new “Team France Export ”, born from an ambitious public-private partnership between Business France and the French Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, has already served around 30 companies. Quel week-end! French brands, French workshops, French discoveries with So Chic at Boutique Fairs Singapore! Oh la la! From 29-31 March 2019, So Chic and French brands were out in full force at the shopping extravaganza Boutique Fairs Spring/Summer 2019! A charming little French marché, plenty of activities and workshops from beauty to art de vivre and gastronomy, many new French brands to discover, the F1 Pit Building Singapore was buzzing with excitement, originality, and French chic. So Chic brought together a French marché, a typical French marketplace with tastings and lot of surprises. From beauty to fashion, interior and gastronomy, more than forty French brands for everyone to discover with our So Chic ambassadors. Throughout all three days, So Chic organised workshops and fun French activities with lots of different brands and people! As part of #SoChicGastroMonth, we had brought together many tastings of delicious French food. Gastronomy-wise, we enjoyed a jam tasting with Conscious Delights and a rum tasting with House of Rum, we also had a tea tasting with Crème Simon and a chocolate tasting with The Gourmet Travel. We had a Frenchy Breakfast with Maison Kayser and then we ate again with So France and with La Petite Boutique for cheese, and guess what, we ate again a French brunch with Ginett. Lifestyle-wise we had an accessorising workshop with Les Georgettes by Altesse and an Art of Table setting with Christofle. And finally, not to forget, an online and offline lucky draw to win: a dinner for two at your favourite French restaurant, and there were many on our list! Did you win? Bon appétit and enjoy!
