+ The National Road Safety Foundation is proud to partner with FCCLA The National Road Safety Foundation (NRSF) is a non-profit group that’s been promoting safe driving for nearly 60 years. We have lots of great programs and resources to help talk about safe driving. NRSF sponsors the Safe Rides - Save Lives PSA Contest, offering a total of $5,000 in cash prizes to the FCCLA chapter that submits the best idea for a public service announcement about safe driving. Contest open now, deadline date is 3/1/22. Our sponsorship this academic year will expand the reach of the Teen RSA, engaging more youth traffic safety advocates to conduct assessments of school intersections and then advocate for infrastructure solutions to prevent deaths and injuries. In the past, more than 1,000 FCCLA members in dozens of schools conducted Teen RSAs to identify potential dangers at intersections near their schools. Our sponsorship this academic year will expand the reach of the Teen RSA, engaging more youth traffic safety advocates to conduct assessments of school intersections and then advocate for infrastructure solutions to prevent deaths and injuries.

This year is certainly going by fast and I am so proud of how you are all making each moment count. When I look back on this past fall, I remember feeling inspired when I saw the United States Capitol full of FCCLA leaders in their red blazers. It was so encouraging to be back together advocating for Family and Consumer Sciences and FCCLA. As we continue through FCCLA Week and state conferences, I look forward to seeing and celebrating the great work of FCCLA chapters and state associations. As we start the new year and continue to grow, we must also remember to take care of ourselves and build our emotional resilience. During these busy days as we work to make every moment count, attend regional and state meetings, work to complete projects, and prepare to attend National Leadership Conference, we must make space to keep the pace. It is vital for all of us to make time to take care of ourselves, to ensure we have the strength to enjoy success and invest in serving others. Life is so busy and we must make space for our own resilience to keep the pace of all that work, life, school, and family success requires.

These days continue to offer challenges as opportunities for leaders to showcase their resilience. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity and sometimes just know that it is okay to not be okay and to understand that those around us may not be okay. Working through these times together makes us stronger as leaders and as an organization. We have been reminded that relationships with others is important to our wellbeing. Taking the time to build connections and make our relationships count by reaching out to others and investing in positive relationships helps us all reinforce our resilience. Each and every one of us have faced unexpected adversity and continue to grow through these times. Being resilient is a necessary skill for coping with life’s inevitable obstacles and one of the key ingredients to success. Together we work to bounce back from adversity and bounce forward to make every moment count. I am honored to have seen so many of you take this step to bounce forward and celebrate the beginning of an exciting New Year with FCCLA. Your membership and engagement in FCCLA counts toward success today and tomorrow.

FCCLA’s Ultimate Leadership Fund is a mission-driven campaign that helps to grow the organization and support the needs of members and chapters by designating funds to provide affiliation support grants, chapter and individual grants, Competitive Event recognition, and support additional areas of greatest need.

I wish you all a great second semester and hope to meet many of you in San Diego at the 2022 National Leadership Conference!

FCCLA supporters allow the organization to continue to enhance Family and Consumer Sciences education in the classroom, while establishing FCCLA as the premier Family and Consumer Sciences career pathway organization.

For the second year in a row, members used their annual fundraising surplus to celebrate World Kindness Day by paying it forward in their school district. Last year they purchased food and other perishables from local farmers and distributors to give away at their school to families in need. This year they wanted to give the families they helped more flexibility in the foods they wanted to bring home. So, at 7 AM on Friday morning, Chapter President, Lexi Cobin, Treasurer, Ella West, and fellow members Evette Lewis, Anaida Melendez, Sophie Miller, and Ryleigh Ridgeway stood out in the cold to give parents dropping off their children 100 gift cards to Save A Lot grocery store with this message attached:

“You have received this gift card with a $20 value from Save A Lot here in Du Quoin, IL. This card was purchased and handed out by the FCCLA members of DuQuoin High School. We had a great fundraiser this year and we are putting some of our earnings back into our community by handing out these groceries. If you feel you don’t need this, please pay it forward.”

DuQuion Chapter, IL: The Impact of TikTok “One person, one group, one community can spark a positive reaction across the world that will light up someone’s day.” Lauren Bauman, Chapter Vice President It’s not every day a good deed goes noticed, but, for FCCLA chapter members in Du Quoin, IL, theirs was noticed in a BIG way! On November 12, 2021, the chapter’s community service initiative went viral. Their hard work was shared by TikToker, Derrick Bower, (@ dhbowzer_retro_cafe) receiving an astounding 3 million views, 1.6 million likes, 13.7 thousand comments, and 11.5 thousand shares in under 24 hours! And it continues to grow! The next day the story was featured on the front page of their local paper and picked up by national alert service NewsBreak. Their chapter even received calls from across the nation to either congratulate them on their work or to make donations so their chapter could continue giving back. “We couldn’t believe how many people wanted to give,” exclaimed Chapter Adviser, Teresa Stacey.

6 TEEN TIMES | Spring 2022

Distributing grocery store gift cards isn’t the only fundraiser this chapter has participated in. “Every year we complete three big community service projects,” said Chapter Adviser, Teresa Stacey. These include filling M&M tubes with quarters for their local food pantry, collecting toys for children in their community, and volunteering at the winter lights fair. Acts of service such as these are foundational to FCCLA, and as an added bonus, Chapter President, Lexi Cobin says, “we always have so much fun when we get to spend time together and make people’s days.” When members participate in community service, they learn more about themselves, others, and the world around them so that they can make a difference now and in the future.

a scholarship participating in STAR events! Today, Ms. Stacey continues to support and advocate for what is now FCCLA by helping other teachers in the area either start chapters or get theirs back up and running. She is always encouraging other chapters to affiliate in order to stay informed on updates and resources from the state and national levels. Looking forward to next year, her chapter plans to celebrate another World Kindness Day. After discussing with her students, they agreed that distributing gift cards was helpful to their community because the recipients could either use them to buy food for their own family or pass it along to someone who would benefit from it. While working towards completing this initiative, their goal was not to receive publicity for their hard work. In fact, they enjoy having the element of surprise on their side and feel that when it is unexpected, it is truly a random act of kindness.

As a chapter adviser, Teresa Stacey emphasizes the importance of instilling community service values early. She encourages her students now so when they become adults, they remember the work they did and continue to give back to their communities. And it is working! Every year they get excited about what their chapter will work towards and look “When we are kind to people it helps forward to seeing their hard work them be kind to others as well.” pay off through all of the smiles on – Ryleigh Ridgeway everyone’s faces, knowing they had a positive impact. Ms. Stacey has been an FCCLA Adviser for over 20 years and a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher for almost 30! But that is not where her journey began. Since fourth grade she knew she wanted to be a teacher and when she discovered Family and Consumer Sciences and Future Homemakers of America (FHA) early on in high school, she said she “finally found her home.” As a member, she was elected as her FHA chapter’s President her senior year and even won

If you or your chapter are wondering how you can become more involved in your community, Ms. Stacey has a few tips: start small, listen to what your community needs, and let it snowball from there. The Du Quoin, IL chapter’s fundraiser distributed $2,000 worth of groceries, and your chapter can achieve this too. Remember that impacting 10 people is just as important as helping 100 families. So, get started today by marking your calendars for the next World Kindness Day on Sunday, November 13, 2022. In the meantime, let us know how you will continue to Make Service Count in your communities at home!

Make Your Words Count! Connect With Us!

Advice from your Leadership Training Team (LTT)

Whichever career pathway you choose, communication skills will be essential to your success in the workplace. You may need to collaborate with your supervisor, resolve disagreements with your coworkers, or listen to your customers’ needs. The good news is that you can develop these skills right now as an FCCLA member. Follow these tips for effective communication in your FCCLA chapter, your workplace, and beyond.

1. Choose the right form of communication for your message.

The digital world presents unlimited opportunities for connection. Texting and emailing can be effective for short conversations, but serious and complex discussions are best held face-to-face. Face-to-face communication involves nonverbal cues, which include body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice; these nonverbal cues help you understand another person’s feelings. Although text messages are convenient, it can be challenging to recognize the other person’s emotions in a text because you can’t see their nonverbal cues.

2. Think before you speak.

3. Be an active listener.

When someone else is speaking, listen to them instead of planning what you’re going to say next. You can’t listen effectively and rehearse your own response at the same time—your brain can only focus on one task at a time. Concentrate on the speaker’s message and create a mental picture of what they’re saying to help yourself focus.

Capitol Leadership 2021 November 2021 - More than 400 members and advisers from across the country participated in FCCLA’s Capitol Leadership in Washington, D.C. FCCLA challenged all conference attendees to “Make it Count” through advocacy training opportunities, hill day role play, participating in an advocacy rally, and reflecting on their individual Capitol Hill visits! Haley Reid, National Vice President of Membership It is important to advocate for FCCLA at Capitol Leadership so chapters have the training and confidence needed to enact positive change in their own communities.

4. Ask questions.

If you don’t understand what another person is telling you, ask them to clarify. You can say something like “I don’t think I understand what you’re saying about . . .” Or “Can you tell me more about . . .” Asking questions can help you avoid a misunderstanding.

Words can be helpful or hurtful, so consider how your message will impact others. If you feel frustrated or upset during a conversation, take a moment to calm down before responding. Be thoughtful with your online communication too. If you wouldn’t say something to a person’s face, don’t say it in a text. Connecting with others is a real-world skill that applies to all career fields. Whichever pathway you choose, make your communication count! FCCLA enlists a group of talented FCCLA alumni from a variety of diverse backgrounds for the LTT. Team members are chosen to develop trainings, lead workshops and breakout sessions, communicate with national network members and serve as an extension of national staff. Make sure to Connect with the FCCLA Leadership Training Team!

Zeb Kelley, National Vice President of Community Service My favorite experience about Capitol Leadership was being able to fill the capital with a sea of red. Not only did we get to connect with senators from our state, but members from across the nation. It truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Karlyn Gustin, National Vice President of Parliamentary Law Capitol Leadership gave me the opportunity to use the leadership and public speaking skills that I have gained in FCCLA and use them to advocate for FCCLA and Career and Technical Education.

Madalyn Fox, National Vice President of Public Relations It is important to advocate for FCCLA because it is important to give back to the organization that has done so much for us. You can advocate for FCCLA many ways. You can talk to legislators, or even just by telling your FCCLA story! It really helps to promote FCCLA and everything that FCCLA does!

Capitol Leadership 2022 All affiliated members and advisers are invited to meet at the nation’s capital to develop leadership skills, learn about advocacy and government relations, and meet with elected officials. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. and advocate for Family and Consumer Sciences education and FCCLA, the Ultimate Leadership Experience!

The secret of getting ahead is getting

started

It’s never too early to start planning for the 2022-2023 affiliation year. FCCLA has some exciting things on the horizon that will help you excel as an FCCLA member and grow your chapter. Use this checklist below because it is never too early to Make it Count.

Calendar: Subscribe to the FCCLA Communications calendar on the FCCLA Website so you are aware of all deadlines and promotions.

Recruitment: Membership Kits will be mailed out to chapter advisers in the late spring. Use these

resources to assist with recruitment efforts for the 2022-2023 affiliation year. Electronic copies will also be made available in the FCCLA Portal.

Hear from two members on why they joined and what benefits membership provides!

Megan Overend

Midway FCCLA, North Dakota. Why did you join FCCLA? I decided to join FCCLA because my sister was a member. I saw from watching her what cool experiences she was having and I wanted to be part of it as well. It is a bonus that the FCS teacher, our adviser is awesome!

What skills have you learned through FCCLA and FCS that will help you in college and your future career? I think the most important skills are definitely time management and organization. Before I was really unorganized and always struggling with time, but when I got into FCCLA, I learned how to manage that. How was your involvement in FCCLA impacted your life? It’s a big part of who I am today, I would say. Absolutely impacted my life, not only through the skills I have learned, but definitely the people I’ve met and the opportunities I have been a part of. Like attending National and State conferences. I’ve met so many amazing people from across the country and traveled to cool places.

Engage: What are you currently interested in? What classes have you already taken or plan to take? See how that aligns with FCCLA Career Pathways and utilize the Career Pathways Through FCCLA Competitive Events resource to help identify events you may want to compete in.

While engaging in discussion with your adviser, be sure to plan how you and your chapter can win awards and recognition through participation in National Programs, Program Awards, and Partner Contests.

Attend: As with anything in life, experience is important. If you are new to FCCLA or entering your 5th

year, take every opportunity you can to attend District/Region, State, or National conferences, in order to obtain a better understanding of all the opportunities available through FCCLA. Each experience will help you grow as a dynamic leader and better prepare you, should you choose to run for office or compete in an event.

Lead: FCCLA has expanded the FranklinCovey FCCLA Leadership Academy to offer a virtual interactive

learning opportunity through the Leader in Me® curriculum. Sessions will provide participants in-depth training on life-readiness skills that will benefit you now and throughout your entire life. This program is currently being piloted but be on the lookout for your opportunity to be a part of the Ultimate Leadership Experience!

Aidan Jacoby

Hamilton High School Palm Springs, Arkansas.

Why did you first decide to join FCCLA? I had a couple of friends in FCS classes and involved in FCCLA and they looked like they were having a lot of fun, gaining leadership skills and helping others. So, I decided I should join them. My adviser was very encouraging about joining. She always encourages all her classes to become members. What specific skills have you learned through school or Family and Consumer Sciences classes that will help you in your future college and career endeavors? I have gotten more confidence and I’ve learned a lot of leadership skills. During the National Leadership Conference, there have been lots of panels about how you could do interviews and how to better your chances of getting a job. FCCLA really prepares you for your future. How do you make your participation and involvement in Competitive Events count? Competitive Events can really help prepare you by teaching you leadership skills and how to be a critical thinker. Critical thinking is something that has really benefitted me.

“FCCLA has built me into a leader. It has helped my communication skills tremendously and it has given me a lot more confidence. On top of that, I have made so many new friends! All I needed to do was step outside my comfort zone.” - Brooke Tullis

14 TEEN TIMES | Spring 2022

How is your involvement in FCCLA impacted your life? My involvement has really helped me grow as a person. I have become more confident. I’ve developed more leadership skills. It’s been a great time, I’ve made new friends, I’m getting more involved in my community.

Get involved in Competitive Events FCCLA offers four different ways to “get involved” with Competitive Events to either start your FCCLA journey or continue on towards career success! Competitive Events promote FCCLA’s mission to focus on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner, and community leader. Each event is designed to help members develop specific lifetime skills in character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation. Members can participate in one of more than 50 competitive events that apply skills and information learned in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) classes. Competitive Events prepare members for career success by allowing them to explore Career Pathways and address critical personal, work, and societal issues at the regional, state, and national levels.

Ways to get involved in Competitive Events include: 1) Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) Events are Competitive Events in which members compete at the region/district, state, and national level and are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. 2) Skill Demonstration Events provide opportunities for FCCLA members to demonstrate college-and career-readiness skills in Family and Consumer Sciences and related occupations. Using event criteria, members will demonstrate skills learned in their FCS courses and through their involvement in FCCLA. These events may serve as an introduction to FCCLA’s Competitive Events and require a shorter time commitment than STAR Events projects. 3) FCCLA/LifeSmarts Knowledge Bowl is a team competition challenges students’ knowledge in six content areas focusing on FCS and FCCLA knowledge. 4) FCCLA/Knowledge Matters Virtual Business Challenges (Personal Finance and Fashion) encourage FCCLA members to test their personal finance or fashion management skills through an online simulation game style challenge.

Chapter Spotlight:

What’s Next?

Meridian High FCCLA

Has FCCLA helped shape you into the person you are today? Do you want to continue giving back to the organization that provided you with so many opportunities? Look no further than our Alumni & Associates (A&A) network! Being an A&A member will allow you to continue to participate in the Ultimate Leadership Experience upon graduation, stay connected with friends, gain access to current FCCLA news and resources, explore opportunities for national recognition, learn about volunteer opportunities on the local, state and national levels, and inspire others who value the importance of families, careers, and communities.

FCCLA members and students in FCS classes created holiday cards for the St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital. Focusing on the national program community service, members identified the local concern of children in need and carried out this project to improve the quality of life in their community. Their project consisted of developing and creating 53 hand crafted cards. All members and officers signed the cards. The chapter wanted to let the children know that through tough situations, their community is looking out for them and wishing them all the best. The card delivery was greatly appreciated by the patients and hospital staff.

See what these members had to say about their experiences with FCCLA!

Branden Flowers: My involvement in FCCLA has drastically impacted my life. Because of FCCLA, I learned to make career connections and connections for the future with ease. I also learned how to talk to and make connections with new people!

April 1, 2022 Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action

“FCCLA has definitely impacted my life in a positive way. It has really helped make new friends and come out of my shell. And it’s great to have people that you can turn to and connect with. A lot of people don’t know about FCCLA, and I would really like to help grow it in my little town because it’s so awesome!” - Mia Carver

This national day of activism is where youth from across the globe rally to push to be the first Tobacco Free generation. Youth Tobacco rates are at a 20 year high in the US due to the worsening e-cigarette epidemic, and tobacco is still the #1 cause of preventable death in the US and across the globe. On this day each year, students, teachers, parents, elected leaders, health professionals, advocates and concerned citizens are standing up to Take Down Tobacco. How will you Stand Up this year?

Taya Ray Pawlowski: I like go above and beyond to help. FCCLA has helped me find myself, not only as a person, but how I want to direct my focus. I am able to achieve my goals achieve and help others achieve theirs.

In addition to networking with peers, FCCLA hosts Competitive Events for members to explore various FCS career pathways and showcase their development! Whether it be through Entrepreneurship, Fashion Design, Early Childhood Education, Culinary Arts, or Nutrition – the limit on opportunities provided to prepare you for your future simply does not exist. See what skills other members are building and how they apply them in their everyday lives and future careers:

Olivia Grinage: Networking. Having the ability to just go up to someone and start a conversation and ask them about their experiences is necessary for starting any career. This is a skill that you can’t really be taught in the classroom. Practice with this comes from face-to-face interactions with other people that you wouldn’t normally talk to. With FCCLA, you get to experience this with peers from across the country.

Emily Faulkenberry: Public speaking. I’ve never been a big, get up in front of people and talk kind of person. I like to stay in my little bubble and not really do anything. But if I want to become a teacher, I have to be able to go and talk to and in front of people. I feel like FCCLA has really prepared me for it.

Rylie Jamtzen: Interview and Communication Skills. This past year I participated in the interpersonal communication STAR Event and learned how to better communicate with friends, family, and the people in my community. Preparing for this event helped me sail through life a little bit smoother.

When asked about their plans for the future, many students discussed their dream jobs and how FCCLA is helping them get there!

Corryn Holland: I decided to join FCCLA because I love cooking and wanted to participate in a cooking competition. So that’s my career. I am going into culinary art and want to own my own restaurant. I plan to double major in culinary arts and hotel and restaurant management. Career Pathways taught me real world skills and helped connect my culinary interests to my future.

Erika Starr: Before I joined FCCLA, I was very shy and kind of still am, but now I have a lot more confidence going into new situations. I’m able to start things that I never thought I’d be able to complete. FCCLA has also helped me with career planning and exploring my career options. It has switched my mindset from thinking small to thinking on a larger scale, like what I want to do later in life and how I want to use the various opportunities to get me to my goals.

Taylor Even: My dream job is to be a large animal vet. I think what led me to that was growing up on a farm. I have always been interested in animals and just the anatomy of them and how everything works. FCCLA ties into this because learning how to communicate with the animal’s owners is very important. I need to know how to help the animal and knowing how to talk to different people, just with different personalities and how to get along with everybody is just a really important skill.

From career readiness to competitive events, FCCLA helps make memorable experiences. See the kinds of lasting impacts the organization has had on its members and why they encourage their peer to join in and make it count!

Mathew Bruce: There is such a broad range of things that you can do with FCCLA, it really feels like I belong. Before this, I didn’t really have any interests and now my eyes have been opened to so many things. It has really changed my life and now I really feel like I know what I want to do.

Yaslin Sanchez: I feel like I was really quiet coming into my freshman year and I did not want to socialize with people. If it were not for FCCLA, I would never have gone outside of my comfort zone. FCCLA has really helped me become the person I am today.

Future readiness is a core mission for FCCLA and participating in events is a great way to develop necessary real-world leadership skills. 24 TEEN TIMES | Spring 2022
