“What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July?” -Frederick Douglass, July 5, 1852

Early this month, most of us will gather around barbecue grills, coolers, and fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July. Of course, the fourth day of July is more than a date; it’s Independence Day, a day when we celebrate the freedoms we enjoy in this country, freedoms for which many brave women and men fought. Of course, most of only think of the men and women in uniform who serve on the battlefield—and they are truly deserving of our thanks and admiration—but we must also be mindful of those men and women whose fight for freedom took place in picket lines, at lunch counters, on bus seats, in church pulpits, internment camps, reservations, and even jail cells. Yes, it’s true, “Freedom isn’t free,” and there are countless martyrs whose blood testifies to this truth. As we celebrate our freedom this month, let us also remember the words of Scripture, the words of the Apostle Paul in his letter to the church at Galatia: “For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for selfindulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’" As we celebrate our freedoms, may we be reminded that the freedom we have in Christ Jesus far outweighs whatever freedoms we may otherwise claim. May we be mindful that we do not wield our freedoms as weapons against the wellbeing of others, sisters and brothers created in God’s image. May we be mindful of the cost that comes with freedom, a cost no doubt paid by someone else on our behalf. Above all, may we be mindful that our greatest freedom is in Christ: the freedom to love others without condition, to see them as God sees them, to give of ourselves for the good of others—all others. This month, you and I have the opportunity to show what that freedom to love looks like as we seek to serve some of our neighbors on the weekend of July 21st. We are planning to spend that weekend with our friends and neighbors, sisters and brothers of the Whispering Pines community. We will be spending time getting to know them better, working alongside them to make their community better, and we will be sharing in a time of communion and fellowship with them. I hope you’ll make time to come with us, to meet our sisters and brothers in Whispering Pines, and I pray that we will all find community there together, despite what makes us different, for we are all children of God, free in Christ Jesus. Grace and Peace, Chris
