You give something up, and everything’s more joyful.” ― Elaine Stritch Perhaps it’s the cold weather we’ve been having lately, or maybe it’s the way in which time seems to progress faster as I get older, but it doesn’t feel like it was all that long ago that we were lighting the candles around the Advent wreath, singing Christmas carols, and celebrating the birth of Jesus with friends and family around the tree. It doesn’t seem as if enough time has passed for us to be “over” the seasons of Advent and Christmas for us to now be heading into the season of Lent, yet here we are, with Lent beginning this month on February 14 th, Ash Wednesday. Perhaps it’s good for Lent to feel so close to Christmas this year. Maybe we need a season of repentance and sacrifice, a season often marked by giving up something, to follow on the heels of a season that can so easily be distorted as one of materialism and consumption. We need to be reminded of the importance of sacrificing what we think we want in order to make room for those things God has in store for us, those things that matter far more than the material things we collect and desire. With that in mind, in the two weeks of this month leading up to Ash Wednesday, take time to assess the priorities in your life. What consumes the most of your time? On what do you spend most of your money (with tax season in full swing, perhaps this will be easier to assess)? What gets your attention, gets you excited? What things fall towards the bottom of your list of priorities? What things are missing from that list that you know should be on it? Take the two weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday to reflect on your life, and seek God’s direction in what you may need to give up, what you may need to reorganize, what you may need to take up, and then, when we gather for our Ash Wednesday Service on the 14th at 6:00 P.M., commit to making those changes—at least during this season—as an act of worship, devotion, and discipleship. Commit this season to realigning your life with the will of God and the work of God’s kingdom as we begin a journey towards Christ’s resurrection and the power of renewed life it brings. JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN OUTREACH CENTER Our church is scheduled to provide the following items to the J.C.O.C. for the month of FEBRUARY: Canned Soups, Sugar, Pudding Mix & Toothbrushes. Please take your donated items DIRECTLY TO the JCOC located just behind McDonalds.
