There is freedom waiting for you, On the breezes of the sky, And you ask "What if I fall?" Oh but my darling, What if you fly? ― “What if you fly?” a poem by Erin Hanson

“What if…?” Questions that begin with those two words are full of possibilities, full of potential. Questions that ask “What if…?” are questions that guide our thoughts, give us the chance to dream and cast visions about the future. Of course, the tone with which we ask “What if…?” makes all the difference. Sometimes, we ask “What if?” when we are seeking to be cautious. In such instances we ask “What if…?” out of our anxiety, our uncertainty about the future. “What if I fail? What if I don’t get the right answer? What if I make a fool of myself?” We ask such questions when we rely too much on our own power and abilities to take on the task before us. At times, such questions seem rational, keeping us a bit grounded in reality, helping us to keep our expectations in check. At other times, however, asking “What if…?” out of our own anxiety can petrify us and cause us to never take chances, to never rely on those who are there to help us, to never rely on God. When we ask “What if…?” we must ask the question from a different perspective. “What if I succeed? What if I get it right? What if this actually works? What if everything goes the way it should—better even? What if I can actually make a difference?” Now, imagine moving the question to include the participation of others: “What if we succeed? What if we get it right? What if we can make a difference in the world?” Think about it: a group of people—a community, a family, a church—collectively asks “What if…?” and begins to dream about the future together. The utter possibilities are exciting! That’s why we will begin to ask “What if…” together this month. As many of you know, we are very close to paying off our building debt (we are on track to pay it off next month!). This is exciting news, something to celebrate, yet it is also the beginning of something more, of something new and exciting, the beginning of what’s next. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be preaching a series of sermons titled, “What if…?” in which we’ll explore the possibilities of dreaming together with one another and with God about the future of our church. You’ll also hear testimonies from other members of the church about their love for our church and the great work we are able to do together, and you’ll also have the opportunity to make your hopes and visions known as we dream together about the possibilities before us. So be sure to join us on Sunday mornings in worship as we dream together, during Sunday School as we think and learn together, and on Wednesday evenings as we eat and pray together. Be sure to be a part of this exciting season in the life of First Baptist Church of Williams, as we continue laying the foundation for our future work in the kingdom of God. Grace and Peace, Chris
