What is our mission? What are we trying to accomplish? These are questions everyone at First Baptist Church should be able to answer. How would you respond to those questions? I would answer them this way. . .Our mission and every church’s mission can be found in Matthew 28. Jesus, before he left his disciples and ascended into heaven, said this: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Our mission is really found in four verbs in Jesus’ statement. He said we are to “go” into the world and it literally means, “as you are going”. So the church is not to be a place just for people to “come and see” but the church is to be “going” into the world and bringing people in. How are you doing in going? Secondly, notice the church is commanded to “baptize”. It goes without saying that we must first evangelize, share our faith, and witness to the lost before we baptize. As I have said many times, salvation is always prior to baptism in the Scriptures. So, if we are going to baptize then we must be about sharing the Gospel, the good news with those around us. Are you sharing the gospel with someone consistently? Who in your circle of friends is waiting to hear the “good news of Jesus Christ”?

A third part of our mission is to “teach”. What are we to teach? The answer is obvious, the Bible. One reason we believe in Sunday morning Bible study is because Jesus gave us the command to teach. Are you consistently studying God’s word with others? Every member of FBC is expected to be in a Sunday school class where you are being challenged with God’s word. Find a class and be taught the word of God!

...“make disciples of all nations.” If you take this part of the great commission out, then you no longer have a mission.

Finally, the heart of the church’s mission is to “make disciples of all nations”. If you take this part of the great commission out then you no longer have a mission. In order to make disciples we must be disciples. I remind you of Jeff G’s challenge to us last month about making disciples. He gave us Webster’s definition of a disciple. Here is that definition, “someone who accepts and helps to spread the teachings of another person”. Have you accepted the teachings of Jesus and are you spreading it to others? God expects all of us who accept his teaching to become disciples and spread the message of Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “Go, make disciples, baptize them and teach them to obey me! THAT IS THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH! As we seek to accomplish the mission, I want to remind you that Jesus Christ promised to be with us to the end of the age. We cannot accomplish the mission without the power of God and the presence of Jesus Christ. But with God all things are possible! Join us on this magnificent journey as we make disciples.

The Naylor Family Bradley, Elizabeth, Abby & Luke Briefly explain your history together and what led you to Owensboro. BN - We met each other in college and were married in 2005. Having finished graduate studies in medicine and music, we moved to Owensboro in the Fall of 2013 for me to lead the choral music program at Kentucky Wesleyan College. How would you describe your spiritual background? BN - I have been a spiritual pilgrim, only recently having found what I’d call a “home” in our community at FBC. I was raised by parents who were themselves lapsed Christians, attending church only sporadically throughout my childhood. As I became more serious about choral music I sang most frequently in Episcopalian churches where I was drawn to the beauty and artistry of the liturgical musical traditions. However, throughout college and early adulthood, I was merely an attendee of church and an observer of the faith of those around me. EN - I grew up as a homeschooled child of a Southern Baptist deacon and a Sunday school teacher; I walked the aisle at age five. I felt distant from God during my last year of boarding school and first two years at Brown and rediscovered my faith later while studying theology at Oxford. I was assigned a "cousin" by my college, to help me transition to life abroad. That man was the first person who modeled an adult version of Christianity that I could really emulate. I knew that God was chasing after me, and I reconnected with him.

How have you seen God @ Work in your lives over the last year? BN - God’s work in my heart has born more fruit in the last year than in the previous 30. Last November I realized I could no longer deny God’s goodness and love for me. I made the decision to follow Christ, trusting in the provision of God’s plan rather than leaning on my own understanding. As I grow closer to Him I am evermore at peace with my earthly roles of husband, father, friend, and teacher. EN - A year ago, I was praying for God to shake our world hard, so that we would be broken and need to draw close to him. I am thrilled that He has provided for Brad's salvation this year. Now, I see God at work in our family priorities. We work together to see that our time and treasure are invested in things that build the kingdom. Focusing on God's plan for our kids takes so much of the stress out of parenting. The main desire is for Luke and Abby to know God, something that we are quick to encourage, but ultimately, the Spirit will speak to their hearts in His own time.

What has God used to bring about this change and growth in your life? BN - God won me to Himself through a combination of change and constancy. This time last year I had spent a total of 36 hours ever in Owensboro. This last year, nearly everything was new. The new job, relationships, and surroundings helped un-moor me from my previous mistaken intellectual objections to faith. The constancy has, quite simply, been God and Elizabeth. When I married her in 2005 I had no idea the changes and growth she would bring about in me. Timothy Keller describes the ideal spouse as (s)he who will partner with you to become your most Christ-like self. Elizabeth slowly, patiently, insistently won me to Christ and not a day goes by that I don’t praise God for her. EN - We have moved around a ton (Kentucky is our eleventh state), often living apart for up to a year at a time. That has promoted significant reliance on God. I remember once just looking up and saying, "Ok, God, our lease is up in two weeks. We have no jobs, no place to live, no place to store our belongings, and two small kids. You lead; I'll follow." (Cue the Jamie Grace song) Describe the impact that this spiritual change has had on your lives (family, work, relationships, etc.). BN - God has also been at work in the lives of my family members. Elizabeth and I have become more Christ-centered in our financial choices. Abby has shown zeal for the Lord in her love of Awana and reading Bible stories. Luke’s inclination toward music has found a joyful outlet in singing songs from church and VBS. Professionally I have been able to loosen my grip on things over which I ultimately have little control. I’ve been able to relax, realizing that being perfect or sinless is simply unrealistic. I’ve begun apologizing for shortcomings and asking for help, rather than hiding mistakes and going it alone. I’ve been the

beneficiary of several new friendships which have helped model Christianity in action. Elizabeth, how have you seen God @ Work in your husband over the last year, and how has God been working on you through this? EN - Even before we were engaged, I knew that God planned for us to be together. I originally expected that we would quickly have a similar understanding of God, but then twelve years of waiting and praying passed before his heart opened to the gospel. It was odd for me to see him serving as a Minister of Music for many of those years. Now, it is humbling to be the "older" Christian around one who is so excited and already knowledgeable about his faith. I finally feel that our family is moving in one direction. Bradley, how have you seen God @ Work through your wife over the years, and what impact has that had on you? BN - My wife has modeled for me what it looks like to be goaloriented, intellectually and professionally competent, and deeply faithful. She has, trusting in God’s plan for her and our lives, been consistently willing to take leaps of faith with our family, following education and jobs wherever they may take us. Our daughter Abby, 5, has lived in 4 states and 6 houses, largely due to Elizabeth’s leadership of our family and faith in God’s plan. A verse we frequently tell our children is Jeremiah 29:11, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Elizabeth is the living proof of the truth of God’s word. What role has prayer played in this process? BN - In the days surrounding my commitment to Christ, I read a lot of scripture (Matthew and many Psalms, in particular). I also read C.S. Lewis’ “Mere Christianity,”

which I recommend strongly to those seeking an intellectual justification for Christian faith. Lastly, I did a lot of praying through making music. If there is a soundtrack to my salvation, one of the tracks is certainly Edgar Bainton’s “And I saw a New Heaven”, an exquisite anthem for chorus and organ on Revelation 21:1-4. What brought you to FBC and how has the church played a role in your marriage and family since arriving here? BN - When we arrived in Owensboro we were looking for a church that had a vibrant family ministry with kids our kids’ ages, traditional worship and biblical preaching, and strong adult education. The first Sunday, our kids found Cheryl Goss; we found Mike Little, the choir, Joy, Joyce, and Pastor Paul; and then we found Adult 123. Having visited many other churches before, we found a home at FBC. Luke is loved by his teachers, and Abby has flourished in Sunday School, Awana, and VBS. How can the other members of FBC be praying for you and your family? BN - These days we are praying for Abby’s adjustment from homeschooling to first grade at Sutton. We are praying about how to be involved with our church’s ministries (particularly youth, music, and small groups). EN - I am now involved with MentorKids KY and will be volunteering with the youth department this fall. Brad and I are also trying to build relationships in our new neighborhood. Pray that God would use these connections to build His kingdom. Pray that I would have discernment as I treat my patients. The Insanity of God by Nik Ripkin Available on Amazon and Kindle edition Is Jesus worth it? Are you ready to be a disciple maker? Is it possible that we have chosen the peace and security of a new life in Christ while doing all we can to flee from being associated with His suffering? This book follows the testimony of a couple from Kentucky and what God teaches them about Himself as they serve in a spiritually dark place. Hear their trials, weep alongside them, learn how to pray for our brothers and sisters that God is using in persecuted places. Be enlightened to Gospel breakthroughs and rejoice with them. This book will assist you in praying for Judy and those she works with. Kasinger, Al and Sharon Walter, Debbie Settle, Dot Kanipe, Will Smith, and myself. State Park Trip October 27-29… Our annual State Park Trip this year will be to Blue Lick State Park. We already have a great number of people signed up for the trip but there are still a few spaces available. The cost is $159.00 per person and that includes lodging, six meals, transportation, and activities. We will also be taking a tour of historic Maysville, KY which will also include the home of Rosemary Clooney. Contact Susan Dant for more information. Eleven adults from First Baptist Church went to Boston/ Medford on July 26 to participate in Serve Medford Week at Redemption Hill Church. The mission for our team was to primarily work at the Senior Center in Downtown Medford. We were able to connect with a total of 20 adults in a variety of ways. We planned games and activities throughout the week and were able to provide contact information to RHC. Every Tuesday at the Senior Center they have movie day. We were able to show the movie “Facing the Giants” which has a strong Christian message. It was well received and we were excited that we could share the gospel through this medium. Tanner Turley, Lead Pastor at RHC is doing great work in the Medford community. The church has built a strong relationship with key leaders in the community as well as many of the residents. Their focus is to “display” and “declare” the gospel to all people. The Boston/Medford community is deeply Catholic or Unitarian Universalist in their religion, but only about 12% of the community actually attends church on any given Sunday. It is that statistic where RHC can begin to do their work in sharing the gospel. We did take advantage of the free day on Wednesday and toured the historical areas of Boston and took in a baseball game at historic Fenway Park. It was a great day of fellowship and a day of rest for our group. Three days during the week we also gave out granola bars or gum with an invite card to RHC at many of the Subway Stations in the Medford area. People were, for the most part, very gracious for the free items. With all of the teams that participated in Serve Medford week we were able to hand out over 18,000 invite cards at the stations. On the Sunday following “Serve Medford Week” RHC had 300 people in attendance at their worship service with one coming on their profession of faith in Jesus Christ. We rejoice in this decision and continue to pray for RHC as they continue to “display” and “declare” the gospel in the Medford area. Our team consisted of Jean Byrd, Steve and Judy Marshall, Jerry and Sherry

Christmas in New York December 1-5… Our LA 55 group is planning a trip to New York this December for a “Christmas in New York” tour. The cost is $1800.00 per person and that includes lodging in the Times Square area, three shows (including the Rockettes) and transportation. The trip will also include some free time to shop and enjoy the beautiful Christmas decorations in New York City. We still have 4 spaces available if anyone is interested. Please contact Susan Dant for more information and for payment requirements. BLT for September… Our next BLT will be Thursday, September 25. Please join us for this great time of fellowship and food. Contact Susan Dant to sign up for this event. Sabbatical Continues… September 2-10, I will be participating in a leadership conference for ministers and staff who work with adults age 55 and above. This conference provides cuttingedge information on working with the 55 year old adults as well as the 80 plus year old adults. I look forward to this time of study and gaining information on how we can better minister to this growing population of adults. Pictorial Directories are now available… The new Pictorial Directories are complete and are now available for you to pick up. In case you have not picked up your copy, please stop by the Church office to receive your copy. (One per family) I want to personally thank Judi West for her leadership in organizing this project from beginning to end. Also, to our administrative assistants who helped do the copying and collating, and for our volunteers who helped stuff the directories into the bags. I also want to thank Al Hancock, Robert Riherd, and Ed Tullis for volunteering their time to do all of the photos for the directory. We are so blessed to have such talented people in our church who give of their time to the church. Thank you good and faithful servants.

The “worship war” going on in America is not truly a war. It is simply a perception on our part and a result of our own inflexibilities. When reading Scripture, have you ever noticed that God never enters the argument over which style is more legit or valid? Ephesians 5:19-20 and Colossians 3:16—which are almost identical—state how God feels about music. “Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” To God, music style does not matter. As long as our music is genuinely from the heart, God loves it all. Does God address the motivation of our hearts concerning worship? Absolutely. The people of Israel— God’s chosen people—had gotten a bit off kilter, and God provided this stern warning in Amos 5:21-23: “I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies. Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps.”

Rather than viewing the musical style issue with fear and concern, and treating it as a territorial matter or as a front to be defended, it helps to think of it instead as a family reunion. There are multiple generations at a reunion. Lots of different tastes are represented. If you were a fly on a wall at any given reunion, chances are the older generation might be listening to Tommy Dorsey on their turntables or AM radios, their adult children probably listen to Crosby, Stills & Nash on their car stereos on the way over, and the grandchildren have iPod buds in their ears listening to Lady Gaga or Maroon 5. But is anyone wishing they weren’t at this family reunion? No, because they all love each other. The older generations enjoy playing with the children because it brings a smile to their face and makes them feel younger. The children love their time with grandparents because of the love, attention and wisdom they receive. By the same token, First Baptist Owensboro has multiple generations worshiping under the same roof. Many different ages…many different musical tastes…but we’re all worshiping only one true God. On Sunday, September 7 our church family will join for one service at 11:00 am. My prayer for the FBO family is that we approach worship with hearts that are in tune with Him, no matter the style of music.

WHAT TYPE OF SOIL ARE YOU? Approximately one month ago, Jeff G. and his family were with us for a brief visit from serving overseas. The morning they were here, he took the opportunity to share with our congregation what is going on in their area of work and around the world. We heard that the Lord is reaching thousands and thousands through the disciple-making efforts of His people. Jeff challenged us that morning from Matthew 13 and the parable of the sower and the four soils. Remember, as the seed (the gospel) is sowed, it is done on four types of soil:  

 

The path – soil is so hard that it takes no root at all, which signifies a heart that does not repent or believe Rocky – soil that receives the seed with immediate joy, but takes no root, which signifies a heart that allows external factors and pressures to impede growth Thorny – soil that receives the seed, but chokes out the plant and proves unfruitful, which signifies a heart of false idols not allowing fruit to be produced Good soil – soil that receives the seed and does not allow internal or external distractions to impede growth and reproduction, which signifies a heart fully committed to the purpose of Christ (to make more disciples…fruit!)

So what type of soil are you? Be honest with yourself. The message that morning was challenging and the passage ought to be

just as challenging as you read this. We must come to grips with whether or not we are being and making disciples, the mission Christ has called us to! Jeff shared that morning the definition of a disciple according to the secular world: one that accepts and spreads the message of the person they are following. With that understanding, we must realize that one can’t come without the other. Accepting without sharing is not the life of a disciple. Let’s pursue the life of good soil together. How exciting would it be for FBC Owensboro to be known as a fruit-producing church? How exciting would it be to consistently see many go from darkness into light? An illustration was used that morning (provided here) as an analysis of who we are directly discipling. Jeff mentioned drawing a circle, putting your name in it, and then placing the names of those that you have won to Christ or are directly discipling just on the outside of the circle. As you look at this and do this for yourself, are there any names on the outside of your circle? If so, praise God, continue pursuing the disciple-making life. If not, what will you do about it? Will you choose to seek God’s help in producing fruit for His Kingdom? If you are interested in committing to this lifestyle of producing fruit, let me know…I want to help you in this lifechanging journey!

by Paul Strahan NAME TAG SUNDAY--a great way for you to be able to "put a name with the face" here at First Baptist Church One of the great challenges for churches with multiple services is finding a way for the church to get together. If you go to our early service you don’t often get to see those who go to the late service and vice versa. We are all part of the family we call First Baptist Church whether you attend at 8:30 or 11:00! On September 7th we are having “NAME TAG SUNDAY”. The purpose is for us to get to know others who call First

At last! A Bible study resource that shows how Christ fits into the entire gospel story, pre-creation to eternity. And where each one of us fits into it too. We are excited to announce that we will begin a three-year journey through the Bible. On Sunday, September 7 th kindergarten – fifth grade Sunday School classes will begin this fantastic journey at the beginning of Jesus’ Ministry. During the fall semester, each child will discover that Jesus was revealed as the fulfillment of Scripture, the promised Savior. In addition they will learn that Jesus’ miracles demonstrated His divine authority, that He taught people the kingdom of God had come and that salvation was available to all, which includes them! The Gospel Project for Kids is a Christ-centered Bible study resource that follows a chronological timeline of Bible events—presenting the story of redemption through Jesus like kids have never seen it before! These stories come to life through video, music, activities, and more. Each week a Big Picture Question will be presented and answered and then reviewed throughout the year. Such as: Who created everything? Answer: God created the world and people to bring Him glory.

12 What

do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14 So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish. Matthew 18:12-14 As we read these verses, it is plain to see that Jesus cares about lost people. As disciples of Jesus, we should also care about lost people. Over the course of this school year I am praying for deep conviction over the souls of lost people. I’m not only praying that for me, but also for our students. I’m praying that our students see their schools as the mission field in which God has placed them. I pray that they would take the Gospel Message, the good news of Jesus Christ, inside those walls and that God would use our students to start a revival in Owensboro!

gospel with their “1”. The final step is to win their one to Christ!

I think all too often we get overwhelmed by the magnitude of evangelism that needs to take place that we often get discouraged even before we begin. I am encouraged by the parable in Matthew 18. Jesus was concerned for the one. This year, our students will be challenged to simply “Pick 1”. I want to challenge them to do five things over the course of this school year. First, I want to challenge them to commit to pray that God would reveal to them their “1”. Second, I want them to identify the one that God has laid on their heart who has never trusted Jesus for salvation. Third, I want them to engage in a relationship with that person. Fourth, I want them to share the

SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND: Any ministry is only

I am not asking them to share the Gospel with everyone in the school but with just one person over the course of the year. I believe that if our students will commit to reach out to one person over the course of this year, it will be life-changing. We will begin this initiative in September and would ask that you pray for them over the course of this year. Pray that they would have a desire to see their friends saved. Pray that they will have courage to face their fears. Pray they have strength to finish strong. Pray mostly that God would be glorified!

as strong as its volunteers. I am truly grateful for the volunteers we have serving in student ministry. They are extremely faithful and truly want to help lead and disciple our students. I could not be more grateful for their service. That being said, there is still a great need for volunteers in Student Ministry. Our biggest need is for women to help in our Sunday Morning Girls Small Groups. We currently have four teachers and are in desperate need of four more. Teachers are needed in all girls age groups. If you would be interested in helping serve in this capacity, please let me know!

What does the upcoming school year have in store for you? Hard work and determination. Also, I anticipate a great year with the DCHS band. What's God been teaching you lately? When I got home from Seattle I realized not everyone knows Jesus and I need to be on mission locally. How can we be praying for you? Pray that I have a great school year, safe driving and that I impact people positively. What's your favorite youth group memory? Learning to ski at Paoli Peak. If you could choose a super power what would it be? I would have to be a mind reader so I can know how people are feeling and then I can help them.

Eliza Broadus Offering and Kentucky Missions Emphasis 6% of our First on Mission Offering: $12,900 based on our 2014 First on Mission goal of $215,000 When you give to First on Mission you are helping support missionaries and ministries across the state of Kentucky. The theme of this year’s state offering is “Power to Serve”. Acts 1:8 reveals both a call to serve and the power to serve. Jesus said to his disciples, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” The call and the power are at work through Kentucky Baptist missionaries and missions volunteers. This year there are people in Eastern Kentucky who heard the name and story of Jesus for the very first time. There are children in Western Kentucky who received their first bikes—with the message that Jesus loves them. Across Kentucky, prisoners and their families heard that Jesus can save and set them free and hungry people were fed by

members of church plants who want to build lives more than buildings. Dozens of self-funded missionaries, hundreds of short-term volunteers, and thousands of givers are working together, obeying God’s commission to go and tell. Through Him, they find their Power to Serve! These ministries, and so many others, depend upon our giving to the Eliza Broadus Offering. May we find our power to pray, give and serve as the Holy Spirit speaks to us through the Word and through resources which make us aware of needs and opportunities. This year’s emphasis is on service. We serve as we pray for Kentucky missions. We serve as we give sacrificially. We serve as we personally share the gospel with others. We serve as we go and minister in the name of Jesus. And in every avenue, the Power to Serve comes from the Holy Spirit. Who is Eliza Broadus?

Eliza was born in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1851. In 1877, she moved to Louisville, Kentucky and joined Walnut Street Baptist Church. She became a member of the missionary society of that church. The following year, Kentucky formed a Central Committee and Miss Broadus was elected to serve on that committee as the representative from the Walnut Street society. She continued to served on that committee, until 1928, a period of 50 years. During that time she was chairman of the committee for 32 years and vice-chairman for 9 years. She made valuable contributions to WMU work through her years of service both in Kentucky and in the work of national WMU.

Pray that more Kentucky Baptists will have courage to try short-term missions and that churches will promote the collection of items and short-term service for ministry centers with which they have connected.

Saturday–Mississippi River Ministries, Directors George and Cathy Chinn of Hartford, KY Ask God to give churches all over Kentucky a heart to serve their neighbors in poverty. Pray that God will encourage and provide special blessings to self- supported missionaries. Ask God to help George and Cathy Chinn connect volunteers and supplies to areas in greatest need. Sunday-Appalachian Regional Ministry Ask God to provide a huge number of backpacks to needy families, and that those who receive the backpacks would understand God’s love for them in Jesus Christ. Pray for the distribution sites and events to share the gospel with the backpacks.

You may pick-up a detailed prayer guide in the church lobbies on Sunday, September 14.

It will give parents a Biblical view of parenting, answer questions and concerns we all have, and help them understand how Christian parenting must become more than taking your children to church. Also open for those outside FBC...invite a guest!
