Today is the middle of June and there is so many things happening in our church and the world.

Childcare for Worship will be at FBC and we will have a security guard at both RiverPark Center and First Baptist Church.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL is in full swing and we have reached the mid point. I want to say “thanks” to all of the volunteers, maintenance staff, administrative staff, and our ministerial staff for stepping up and making this year one of the best! The kids have been tremendous and we have had a good number in attendance. The whole VBS staff has done an incredible job of making things happen through the maze of construction on our building. Tomorrow the gospel will be shared with our children and I am praying that God will pour out His Spirit upon them. I want to ask all of you to begin praying for VBS 2017. I have not expressed to you the importance of this week. It can and has been life-changing for many kids and adults. I am praying that next year we will have more volunteers, more children, and we will give God the glory! You will hear more about this year’s Bible school as we wrap things up!

We are planning to have transportation shuttles for those needing to get from one place to the other. I know you will have more questions and we will be addressing those as we get closer to the move.

CONSTRUCTION ON 1924 BUILDING! Lanham Brothers are moving quickly in preparing the building for the new construction. I am amazed at the changes so far. THANKS to all of you for the flexibility you have shown during the moving of SS classes. I realize it is not ideal for some of you, but fourteen months will go by quickly. RIVERPARK CENTER WORSHIP! We will be moving to the River Park Center for worship on August 14th. We will be there about 10-12 weeks as the sprinkler system is installed in the Sanctuary. Our schedule will be as follows:  9:00am Morning Worship, RiverPark  10:30am Sunday School, FBC

PRAY FOR ORLANDO, OUR NATION, AND OUR WORLD! In a matter of weeks the city of Orlando was rocked by tragedy. Christina Grimmie, a finalist on the Voice, was shot and killed after a concert in which she was signing autographs. She was 22 and a believer in Jesus. A 29-year-old gunman opened fire at a nightclub killing forty-nine people. He took hostages, and after a three-hour standoff, police moved in. The gunman was killed, but not before perpetrating the deadliest mass shooting in recent United States history. A few days later a 2-year-old boy was dragged into the water by an alligator at a Disney resort. We live in a fallen, dark, and evil world. Followers of Jesus Christ are called to be “salt and light” to those around us. In Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus tells us the two greatest things we can do are: 1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and body! 2. Love your neighbor as yourself! Pray for Orlando, Our Nation, Our Church, and Our World! I look forward to continuing our study of the Ten Commandments!

The June Connect Magazine Article included a visit to the pages of Owensboro's First Church, by Wendell H. Rone, Sr. This month I browsed a few more pages and noticed that history also provides humor. December 2, 1843, First Baptist Owensboro was dealing with a pressing problem. The basement was being frequented by hogs! There was a motion approved that authorized George N. McKay "to repair the lightning rod and to plank up the windows in the basement so as to keep out hogs." Later information tells us that this "was accomplished at a cost of $2.62." We can't do much planking for $2.62 today. The basement hog problem surfaced again in 1847, the windows were again "planked up". The problem was finally solved when the Church on January 31, 1852 ordered "the basement windows be stopped up by brick." Though the problem seems humorous to me, I'm sure it was quite serious to those attending church with hogs in the basement. The problems today are more expensive than hogs in the basement. The building once plagued with hogs was replaced with the current structure, which has been used as a tool for sharing God's Love for nearly one hundred years. The building, though structurally sound is in need of major updates. With the renovation under-way we hope to extend the downtown influence of First Baptist Owensboro for another one hundred years and beyond. Is it really worth the expense and inconvenience of remodeling First Baptist? To answer that question we need to look at the purpose and importance of the church. "The individualistic, do-it-yourself faith or solo Christianity is guaranteed to fail," writes Thomas Tarrants III, vice president of the C.S. Lewis Institute. "That is why we must be an actively engaged member of a congregation of God's people, where we have Christ-centered friends to walk with us and help us grow as disciples." Membership in a local church provides the structure needed for effective spiritual growth and ministry. The building is not the church but this facility allows us to congregate, minister to each other, and the community. Ephesians 4:11-16 tells us God has equipped the local church with all of the people and tools needed to do what He wants done. The people are given spiritual gifts, and the tools are found in the truths of God's Word. God uses these gifts and truths to grow His people spiritually and to teach them to serve each other. This growth process is discipleship. Discipleship is simply helping someone grow into a more committed and loving follower of Jesus. Choosing to follow Jesus is not just a one-time decision we make in our heads. It is not an emotional moment we have and then forget about. Charles Spurgeon said, "Stale godliness is ungodliness. Let our religion be as warm, and constant, and natural as the flow of blood in our veins. A living God must be served in a living way." Being a disciple is an ongoing commitment, no matter how long we have been a Christian. Commitment requires action! It means dying to self, choosing Christ's will over our own. Being a disciple is a lot more than just recognizing Jesus is the Son of God. It means choosing to do what He says, every single day. These choices become more clear as we come together regularly to encourage one another. Virgil Barker, Coordinator, FBC Follow Up Team

Railing and banisters stripped of paint by the old office area.

On June 1st Lanham Brothers Construction began work on our Phase II project. It has been a very busy three weeks as they began the demolition phase of the project. The early phase of the project will be focused on demolition of walls, removing ceiling tile and plastered ceilings, removal of HVAC duct work, and removing old wiring from the building. This phase will continue for several months before they can begin installing the new HVAC and electrical wiring. The arch way located on the alley side of the building will begin taking shape in the month of July. They will begin framing this area to prepare for the roof to be installed before they begin the new addition. The new addition work will begin the first week of August with the drilling for the auger cast pilings. Once the auger cast pilings have been installed, the new addition will begin to take shape relatively quick. The contractor’s goal is to have the new addition under roof before the winter months.

Demolition of old middle school rooms on the third floor.

Antique true dividing light windows. Contact Bob if you are interested in purchasing.

Site work has begun on the corner of our alley and Daviess Street. We will be building a concrete pad and wall to house our dumpster. This will require taking out part of the grass berm to prepare for the new concrete pad. The new dumpster pad will have steel doors installed for aesthetic purposes and fulfill requirements from the city of Owensboro. During the demolition phase, we asked the contractor to

save all wood doors in the 1920’s building. We saved the doors so that our members could purchase a door(s) if they want a part of our historical building. We have also saved the true dividing light windows located in the building. These windows are antique and have a good amount of value to them. The cost of the doors is $25 per door and the cost of the windows are $75 per 12 pane window. If interested please contact Bob Farmer or Robert L Wilson, Chairman of Trustees. The elevator located in the 1920’s building will be available for our use beginning the last Sunday in June until November 1. The use of the elevator will be internal only. The outside entrance to the elevator will not be accessible during the entire construction period. Walls have been installed on each floor to guide you to the 1960”s building once you have reached your floor. We are aware of parking challenges and accessing our building. In the next few weeks we will unveil our plan to begin shuttling people from our parking lots to the church on Sundays. Hopefully this will help, especially during inclement weather. If you have any suggestions on how we can make changes, please do not hesitate to contact me or one of our staff. Thank you for your flexibility and patience during this time.

This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God... II Corinthians 9:12

Thank You We want to say thank you so much to those who served during this year’s Submerged VBS. We averaged 200 children in attendance along with 70 adults. Those who served were teachers, transporters, kitchen helpers, preschool helpers, attendance takers, secretaries, floaters, maintenance, decorators, and many more. It takes many to help children listen, obey, and to learn about how Jesus loves them and died for them. Some children may never hear the name of Jesus mentioned in a loving way or hear about how much He loves them, other than what they have heard during VBS week. We may never know how God has used these seeds that were planted until we meet at His throne someday.
