You hopefully have heard this statement on more than one occasion from one of our staff or members. It is always easier to give lip service to something than actually doing it. We believe, without any question, the Bible calls us to “build bridges to people with the intention of connecting them to Jesus Christ!” The question is, “Who are we building bridges with and are we helping connect them to Christ?” Another way to think about it is, “Who will be in heaven because you intentionally built a bridge to Jesus Christ for them?” Why is this important? It is important because people matter to God even if God doesn’t matter to them! It is important because of John 3:16 and everyone who is a follower is a beneficiary of God’s grace! Let’s not keep it to ourselves, but let’s be willing to share it with everyone! Our focus for 2015 will be “Building Bridges. Connecting to Christ!” Where are the people? They are all around us! WHAT ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBOR? Have you considered building bridges with your neighbors? These are people with whom we mingle with quite often. Maybe this is the place to begin! Ask God to provide opportunities for you to build a bridge with those around you. The fact is there are numerous ways to open up doors to building bridges with people. I would like to hear from you about some of the ways you have begun to build bridges with others. WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO RARELY ATTEND YOUR SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS? We have a great number of people in every department who are inconsistent in attendance. Often times we hear the reason for their inconsistency is they have not made a connection. This is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to those and connect them to Jesus and the church! WHAT ABOUT THOSE WITH WHOM YOU WORK? Most of us work around people who are in need. Let’s ask the Lord to make us sensitive to our co-workers. Opportunities will come for you to share Jesus with them so let’s be ready in season and out! Here is one tool to help tell your story! TELL YOUR STORY! The Kentucky Baptist Convention introduced a new initiative called “Tell Your Story” which is an evangelistic initiative that allows Kentucky Baptists to explain how their lives changed when they accepted Jesus. “Tell Your Story” was the theme of this year’s annual meeting and it offers Kentucky Baptists a mix of tech-savvy ingenuity with good old-fashioned storytelling in an easy-to-use format. Through the website, www.tellyourstory.today, people will have the potential to tell a much broader audience about their encounter with Christ. “We are challenging Kentucky Baptists to share the story of their encounter with Jesus to at least one person every day for an entire year with a goal of winning five people to Jesus over a year,” McAlister said, “and www.tellyourstory.today, can be an important piece in achieving that kingdom goal. Homebound and Nursing Home Ministry… Each week we have a group of ladies who take the flowers from the sanctuary and put them in separate vases to be delivered to our Homebound and Nursing Home members on a weekly basis. It is an incredible ministry that allows some of our Senior Adult volunteers to visit our members and deliver the flowers. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful group of people who are committed to this ministry, allowing us to have a connection to those who are not able to physically attend church.
New York Trip… Thirty people traveled to New York City on December 1st to enjoy the beautiful Christmas season in New York. We had the pleasure of seeing the Rockettes show at Radio City Music Hall as well as two Broadway shows. We also had the opportunity to visit the new 9/11 museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art while we were there. It was a trip that allowed us to enjoy Christian fellowship together, but also to experience the Christmas season in New York. The week had its challenges as we had to encounter the protests that erupted from a grand jury decision. However, for the most part, it was a peaceful protest and it was staged about 20 blocks from where our hotel was located. We were very fortunate to be located where there was a huge police presence. The lighting of the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center happened on Wednesday while we were there. People from all over the world come to New York to participate in the lighting ceremony. It is so beautiful at night with Christmas music playing in the background. Over 45,000 lights are on the tree which translates to almost five miles worth of lights. I want to say a personal thanks to Ruth Gillaspie and Susan Dant for working out all of the details of the trip. There are so many details in a trip of this magnitude and everything was perfect. Thank you for making the trip a huge success.

Flower and Decorating Committee… I want to personally thank the Flower and Decorating Committee for their hard work in decorating the sanctuary and church for the Christmas season. There is so much preparation and work that goes into decorating the church each year. Thank you for your faithfulness and service to provide such a beautiful place to worship. We also have a committee that is responsible for our Chrismon tree in the vestibule. A special thanks to Sally Plain and her committee for providing a beautiful tree and to give us a reason to celebrate the birth of Christ.

January is a favorite month for football fans, for the National Football League playoffs are in full swing and the Super Bowl will soon arrive. I am reminded of an article (author unknown) about the similarities between what goes on in a football game and what goes on in church. Here are some of my favorites: •

Halftime: The period between Sunday School and worship when some decide that things aren’t going so well and they’re just going to go home.

Benchwarmer: Those who just sit in church and never “get in the game” by serving or becoming involved in the church’s ministries.

Illegal Motion: Making a trip to the restroom during worship.
•
Instant Replay: The preacher tells a story you have heard before.
•
Blindsided: You are called on to pray with no prior warning.

Sacked: You are called on to pray and you’re asleep.
•
Two Minute Warning: The point at which you realize that the sermon is almost over and begin to gather up your belongings.
•
Sudden Death: What happens to the congregation’s attention span if the preacher goes “overtime.”
•
End Run: Getting out of church quickly, without speaking to any guests or fellow members.
•
Halfback Option: The decision of half of the Sunday morning congregation not to return for the evening service.
•
Quarterback Sneak: Church members leaving during the invitation.

Blitz: The rush for the restaurants following the closing prayer.
And on a completely unrelated note… There are two main common factors in any corporate worship service at FBCO: One, they were planned, prepared, and presented for the glory of our Lord, and two, they involved church members just like yourself. Yes, we do like to invite guests to help lead from time to time, but our own church family makes up the vast majority of those leading whenever we gather to worship. Why not be a part of it? You’re a candidate to join the Sanctuary Choir and/or Orchestra if you meet just one of the following criteria: 1. You enjoy music. 2. You play an instrument (even if it’s been collecting dust over the years). 3. You have a pulse. The Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra will soon begin preparing music for Holy Week. We would love for you to join us! Waiting for a personal invitation? Consider this it! Feel like you’re not talented enough? Ask any Sanctuary Choir or Orchestra member and they will tell you that talent is not what it is about, but rather your desire to let God use you in leading others in worship. See you at rehearsal.
“Building Bridges. Connecting to Christ.” Actually committing to this can lead you into some uncharted waters. You may say and ask some of the following: • I have never led someone to Christ. • I have never had conversations with anyone about Christ. • I am always nervous to talk about Christ, even though I know I am called to share. What if they ask me questions about Jesus or the Bible that I don’t know the answer to? • What do I do with someone if they actually do respond and want to know more about the faith? These are all valid questions and ones that FBC would love to equip you to face head on! One of the ways to assist you in the process is to recommend some books that have been and still are helpful for “Building Bridges. Connecting to Christ.” Below are four books that I hope you take the time to investigate, read, and use as you seek to walk alongside others in bringing them to and growing them in faith! HOW TO GIVE AWAY YOUR FAITH – Paul Little Little does an excellent job with this short book. He gives much insight on the focus and foundation of the gospel message, Jesus; the role of the ambassador in giving the message; and how to present the message! This is a very accessible read and would serve you well as an encouragement to either begin sharing your faith or renew the fire for sharing! Let this book serve as instruction on building bridges with those around you in order to share the good news of Jesus Christ! DISCIPLES PATH: THE BEGINNING: First Steps for New Disciples – LifeWay LifeWay has begun a new discipleship series called “DisciplesPath”. The intent of the material is to help a new believer follow the steps of discipleship. This is meant to give support to those who are discipling others and walking alongside of them in their new journey of faith! The series will cover several steps, but this first one is now available and ready for you to use in your efforts toward connecting people to Christ! THE WALK: Steps for New and Renewed Followers of Jesus – Stephen Smallman This is a wonderful “basics” type of book. Smallman answers simple questions like: • What is a disciple? • Do I have to go to church? • How do I read the Bible and pray? • What exactly is the gospel? • What am I supposed to do now that I am a disciple? SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES FOR THE CHRISTIAN LIFE (Revised & Updated) – Donald S. Whitney Ever have someone ask you the purpose of the Christian life? Whitney does a spectacular job of answering these questions and many more as he covers, in great depth, the vital spiritual disciplines of the Christian life: Bible intake, prayer, worship, evangelism, serving, and several more. As you think about building bridges and connecting others to Christ, this book can prove to be foundational for your own spiritual life as well as those you are discipling.

Hello! We’re R&N. We have lived in China for the last four years. We have two daughters (Riley Grace, 2 and Vivian, 10 months). We live in a city of 1.5 million people in which less than 1% are Christian. Most people here are atheists and believe only in themselves. If they have heard of Jesus they have no idea why He is important to their lives or the forgiveness found only through Him.
R works at a local university teaching English, but spends most of his time sharing with nonbelievers and discipling believers so that they can multiply among the mass population here. N spends a lot of her time in our neighborhood and community sharing with neighbors and shop owners in the area. Our daughters have made this much easier as they are the only Americans around and, therefore, attract a lot of attention. Riley Grace is learning Chinese and loves to meet new friends, and Vivian is known in our community as the “white baby doll�.
In February, all of China will be celebrating Chinese New Year. This is a time when families travel from all throughout China in order to be together. They will celebrate with big meals, fireworks and traditional Chinese lanterns. This has always been a great time for believers to share the gospel with their families while they are all together. As such, we are planning to use the money you and other Southern Baptists like you gave to the Lottie Moon Christmas offering to send out 15,000 tracts for local believers to take back to their families and local communities. We are confident that, because of your giving, hundreds of thousands of people will hear the good news this Chinese New Year and have a chance to believe. With your prayers, we are also confident that many will repent and believe as well.
