A Word from Paul A Few Things on My Mind... By Paul Strahan, Pastor

One Worship at the RiverPark August 14th is the date we begin worshipping together as one body in the RiverPark Center. Our schedule will be worship at 9 AM and then Bible study at 10:30 AM at First Baptist Owensboro’s main building. I have a feeling the 10-12 weeks we spend in the RiverPark could be some of the greatest times in the life of our church in relation to growing, reaching others, and becoming closer as the body of Christ. Please pray about the transition to and from the RiverPark Center, especially regarding your participation. I realize the inconvenience of having worship and Bible study in two separate places. We will be shuttling folks from the parking lots. We want to do everything we can to make sure we provide the smoothest transition possible. We will need lots of volunteers to help transport, greet, and usher, as well as to simply guide people to worship and their Bible study class. If you can help us during the transition, please contact one of our staff, and we will put you to work. I really believe our church, First Baptist Owensboro, has great potential to see a mighty move of God during this time. When the early Church was in its infancy, the book of Acts records that “they were all together in one accord.” A few verses later the Bible says, “the Lord was adding to their number

day by day those who were being saved.” The best is yet to come! Thanks in advance for being faithful to the Church and the work of the Lord.

Construction is Moving Along! There are a lot of things with many moving parts on our property and things are changing quickly. Thanks to all of you for your flexibility and understanding during our construction. We have a good crew of workers and I want us to pray for them as they do their job. God is good all the time!

Clarence–One of a Kind This month we said, “See you a little later,” to Clarence Nemitz. We had a great celebration of his life, and we will miss him terribly. It has been said of some people, “God broke the mold when He made _______!” That certainly was true of Clarence. He loved everyone and was concerned about his or her spiritual condition. Clarence served on staff for 28 years and then served without pay the remainder of his life. He has received his reward! Vivien and Gaila, we loved Clarence, and we love you! Hydrate Youth Camp by Will Smith, Students & Missions A few weeks ago we had the opportunity to go to Panama City Beach, Florida for youth camp. It is always incredible to just sit back and see God work in the hearts of our students. It is especially cool for me to see how many of our students have matured in their faith over the past few years. You can see their growth by how they respond to the Lord through worship, Bible study, and through small group time. My prayer for this particular week was for God to continue to soften hearts to transformation. He certainly did that! We had several decisions over the course of the week. We had several students rededicate their lives to Him and we also had two in our group give their lives to Christ! Please be in prayer for these two as they follow in baptism and as they

grow in their faith. I am thankful for camp week and what God does when we set aside time to be with Him. Thank you for praying for our students, and thank you in advance for you continued prayer.

Bethany Roberts - 9th Grader "My favorite thing about camp was the bonding that took place between all of us because I personally didn't know some of the students that well. Between all of the games and volleyball and time at the pool I learned a lot about some of the students I had never made a connection with. I experienced God at work mostly on the last night during worship when we were singing. I also felt as if God was at work in the other students through the speakers in worship. I felt that we all had an opportunity to experience God through each speaker because there was a variety of them, so there was at least one speaker that each of us connected with."

God at Whether at camp or on mission...

iPlay Soccer Camp by Brent Phillips, Interim Rec. & College Our 4th Annual iPlay Soccer Camp (July 5-7) saw 124 kids and 57 volunteers come out to the OHS Soccer Stadium. Children ages K–5th came out to learn how to play soccer. We saw kids learn ball mastery skills and games to help them fall in love with soccer. Most importantly, Coach Dale Poole walked through the gospel before the end of each session with the children. It was a great time of fun and displaying the love of Christ to all the children in attendance. We are so thankful for all the wonderful volunteers that made this camp possible. Here are what a couple of those volunteers–and one enthusiastic camper–had to say about their experiences at iPlay 2016:

t Work

God has been at work this summer! Austin Brooks - Volunteer "It was great to see the enjoyment of the kids and how excited they were to be loved on by our church. It is always good to not only show other athletes how to play soccer better, but also to show kids the gospel in the midst of a sport they love."

Hadley Houston - 2nd Grader "I loved making friends and scrimmaging with all my friends. The coaches were super motivating, and it made the camp super fun. I shot the ball through one of the coach's legs to score a goal and it was great!"

Brock Quinton - Volunteer "I love working and interacting with kids, and it was a great way to reach those who may not go to church in our community. We were shining the light of Jesus to all those kids and their families, and it was a great event to be a part of."

most fun part was learning about Jesus!"

by Suzie Horner, Children

"Church camp was the bomb! I didn't want to leave. It was cool learning the Bible."

Every Sunday for the past three months, a group of kids have met me at my office asking, "How many more days until camp?" Fortunately, I found a countdown app that would count down to the last second! Our kids love camp, and they love it so much that they invited their friends to join them. This year we took 42 children and 14 adults to Crossings at Jonathan Creek. Here were some of their comments about their camp experience: "Camp was great, and we got to learn more and more about Jesus, and it was a lot of fun!" "Camp was an amazing experience. Even though I'm Catholic, I still felt accepted by everyone."

This last quote is from a tearful FBC adult camp sponsor: "I got to experience hearing a child call his father and say, 'Dad, I just accepted Jesus into my life!'" Two of our children accepted Christ while at camp this year and lots of seeds were planted! Our campers were challenged to pray for someone, make a new friend, and ask God to speak to them about something while at camp. One of our children who made a decision was prayed for by another child who knew their friend needed Christ. God proved that He uses camp and hears and answers the prayers of children!

"We did a lot of fun things, but the

When I began writing this, I sat looking across a field of little soccer players (100 plus) and their volunteer coaches (35 plus). I saw people from different states and backgrounds coming together for the sake of the gospel. We traveled 1900 miles to partner with people from California and Washington to simply love a community through soccer. Our team consisted of 12 people (6 girls; 6 guys) who came to Seattle to serve in whatever way necessary to help LifePoint Church reach their community. I was very proud of our team for working so hard at whatever was asked of them. They represented our church well. One member of our team, Bennett Wilson, had this to say about his time in Seattle:

How did God grow or stretch you on this trip? "God pushed me to be patient with the younger members of my team so that I could teach them and give correction in a loving way."

4

How did you see God at Work through what you did on this trip? "I saw God provide energy when there wasn't any energy left in me. I came straight o of working at a church camp for two months, and I was worried I wouldn't be up for the challenge. But when soccer camp came around every night, I remembered why we do this and the widespread joy it brings, and that just filled me with the energy I needed."

What was something new that God exposed you to in how He is working in Seattle? "Through the relationships I built in Seattle, I learned that God allows people to hit rock bottom in their sin. People have started to realize that something is wrong with their worldly lifestyle and that they can't defeat sin on their own. I saw God humble people while being the provision of strength that we all need to defeat our sinful ways."

From July 23 to 30, we once again partnered with Redemption Hill Church to assist with “Serve Medford” Week. We had six adults from First Baptist Owensboro serve in the Medford area doing acts of kindness. We assisted at a nearby senior center, handed out RHC information and snacks at a subway station, and helped with a block party held at a local park. The block party was an especially tremendous “connect” event for the church with the Medford community. Thank you for all the financial and prayer support our team received. Please continue to pray for Tanner Turley and Jon Chasteen as they lead RHC. Here are a few things our trip attendees had to say:

How did God grow or stretch you on this trip? Terry Disney: "With increasing age and aches, I'd begun to worry that I might not be truly useful on mission. God definitely stretched me on this trip."

Steve Marshall: "With each trip to Boston (my fourth), God is working in my life...allowing me to feel more comfortable engaging non-believers."

How did you see God at Work through what you were able to do this week? Meagan Harrison: "As we were hanging ads on doors, some people seemed very eager to check out the community fun night being hosted by the church in the park. I don't think those same people would have actively pursued a church on their own."

MEDFORD 2016 MISSIONARIES Steve Marshall Phil Disney Terry Disney Andrew Harrison Meagan Harrison Bob Farmer

What was something new that God exposed you to in how He is working in Medford? Andrew Harrison: "I was exposed to how many people knew of Tanner and RHC through their transparency and community outreach." Phil Disney: "God showed me how serving the un-churched in a community can bring down distrust. We see progress from a distance where the pastoral team in Medford may not see it up close. The church united is essential to teamwork.

1 We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. 3 For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6 that TOGETHER you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15:1-7 ESV (emphasis mine)

In Paul’s letter to the Roman church, he gives the fullest treatment of his theology or beliefs. It was not a letter intended to give an exhaustive summary of his doctrine, but appears to be more of a letter specifically addressing issues in that local church, as many of his letters did. This was a church that had people coming from completely different backgrounds. Some in the church were Jews, and others were Gentiles. Regardless of their heritage, Paul addressed them as Christians. As one can imagine, with such distinct backgrounds, especially regarding spiritual matters, issues did arise: • •

What role does the law, given to Jews, play in faith matters in this church? What standing do Gentile believers have in our midst?

Together

By Wesley Dunn, Discipleship

• • •

If Gentiles have full inheritance to God’s Kingdom, what does the future look like for Israel? Now that we are Christians, do we observe the Old Testament food laws given to Israel? How do all these things impact the way that Jewish and Gentile Christians relate to one another?

Paul truthfully and graciously handled these sensitive topics, and as he approached chapter 15, he dealt with some of the very practical relational matters. At the end of chapter 13, he helped them to see that the law is fulfilled through love for one another. In chapter 14, Paul instructed them to avoid passing judgment on one another on matters such as eating and celebrating special days. In the back half of chapter 14, he also extended their relationship further by commanding them to avoid putting stumbling blocks in front of other brothers and sisters in Christ, helping them to understand that there were actions that would hinder the spiritual growth and maturity of others. Instead, he told them, “…pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.” (14:19) This entire context leads to the first seven verses of chapter 15. Paul used these verses to summarize his previous teaching and give the motivation and grounding for it. In addition, he told the result of such living. He summarized by saying that believers, Jews or Gentiles, should seek to “please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.” (15:2) The reason for living in such a way was simple: Jesus Christ. He did not live for His own pleasure,

but lived and sacrificed for the benefit of others. His example is the “why” behind the command from Paul. He continued with confirmation that the Old Testament Scriptures were for the instruction and hope of the entire church. Then, Paul prayed for them and expressed the intended results. “May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that TOGETHER you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (15:5-6 emphasis mine)

...that TOGETHER “you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Here is the progression of what Paul said: Don’t live to please yourself, but instead live in such a way to please your neighbor and build them up. Jesus Christ lived this perfectly and is the reason you should live this way. His example sets the pace! My prayer for you is that you live in this harmony in Christ Jesus. Why? So that you can live out God’s intended purpose for man, TOGETHER with one voice: glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus

Christ! From August through October, First Baptist Owensboro has the opportunity to heed the instructions of the Apostle Paul. We have the opportunity to be TOGETHER with one voice glorifying the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! As we observe the sanctuary construction over ten weeks and join as one in the RiverPark Center for worship, we are afforded a unique opportunity in our church’s recent history to be TOGETHER. The potential is present for issues to arise. On a much smaller scale, similar to the Roman church, we bring different backgrounds to our gathering. Some are used to a traditional worship and others more contemporary. Some are inclined to worship with the leading of a choir, organ, piano, and orchestra, while others prefer the leadership of a praise team. Some are familiar with worship at 8:30 AM and others at 11 AM. Some are used to sitting in a particular section of the sanctuary while others prefer another place. Let’s avoid the potential for division and join TOGETHER to find joy in this opportunity. Let’s wisely follow the instruction of the Apostle Paul, pursuing the glory of God and the good of others before our own. Let’s seek to please our neighbors for their good and to build them up, doing so on the foundation and motivation of Christ as our example. Let’s live in unity and harmony in Christ Jesus, so that TOGETHER we may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! 

Worship at the RiverPark By Derry Billingsley, Worship For the past few years, our congregation has enjoyed an option in worship styles. If you prefer hymns and things to be a bit more traditional, the Classic Service is for you. The Elevate Service has met a need for those who enjoy a band and like singing choruses. Regardless of personal preference, the First Baptist Owensboro family has a choice each Sunday. Beginning August 14, we will worship together under one roof at the RiverPark Center. At 9 AM each Sunday, we will have one worship experience. For a few reasons, I am personally quite excited about it. The main reason is as I just wrote…our church family will be together for one worship experience celebrating the one true God. This is a good thing!

When I heard that we would be worshipping at the RiverPark for a few weeks, a question came to mind. Perhaps the same question has occurred to you… What will worship be like when we meet at the RiverPark Center? Think about it for a minute…

When a church offers two services with different styles each Sunday, what do you do when you come together? When God has blessed each of the two services with so many gifted musicians, who plays in the one service? There are members of our church family that do not know many, if any, choruses. Conversely, there are those who are unfamiliar with hymns. What songs will we sing? I’ve been thinking over these questions,

and many others, to the point that at times it begins to feel a bit complicated. How wonderful it is that we believe in the Living God who makes the complicated simple! I’ve written in previous articles how God does not mention style of worship in His Word, but that we use whatever is at our disposal as we worship Him. He is more concerned with what is going on inside of us: our attitudes, intentions, and whether or not we are worshipping Him in Spirit and in truth (see John 4:24). We are to worship with our minds as well as with our hearts. As God has said, that is what me “must” do whenever or wherever we worship. So, the short answer to what RiverPark worship will be like is this: there will be variety, and each service will be focused on God and our worshipping Him in spirit and in truth.

Then Sings My Soul: A History of Our Hymns

Dr. Robert J. Morgan

10

In both morning worship services on Sunday, August 7, we will worship God by going through a history of hymnody. Beginning with biblical hymns, we’ll make a progression from ancient hymns all the way to modern worship music. It will be a unique worship experience you will not want to miss. Our Sanctuary Choir and instrumentalists will lead in worship, and Dr. Robert J. Morgan, our guest speaker, will bring it all together.

Dr. Morgan is an author and teaching pastor at The Donelson Fellowship in Nashville, Tennessee, where he has served as pastor for 35 years. He is a best-selling and Gold-Medallion-winning author with more than 35 books in print and more than four million books in circulation. His products in electronic and audio format number hundreds of thousands. He is also a staff writer for Dr. David Jeremiah and Turning Points

To give you an idea of what is in store musically, here is a brief description of what is planned for the first few weeks: •

On August 14, our first Sunday at the RiverPark, we will observe the Lord’s Supper. Joy Malone and Joyce Goodwin will play piano and keyboard, Bruce Hudson will play bass, Mike Smith will play percussion, there will be a horn section, and Ryan and Maeghan Adams will sing.

On August 21, the Sanctuary Choir will lead (and will most Sundays).

On August 28, the Elevate praise team will lead in singing arrangements of familiar hymns and choruses.

Chances are that you will experience something you are not typically accustomed to as we worship together at the RiverPark. Embrace it! Whether it be the instruments used or songs sung, rest assured that what is planned will be centered on the One we gather to worship. 

First On Missions Spotlight

Catching Up with the Scotts To our family, the past four months have felt more like a year because of all that has occurred.

Language Life Depending on our class unit, we are in class between 2–4 hours every weekday. Written homework amounts to about two hours per day and then approximately two hours of verbal language practice. That accounts for two exhausted adults!

Kids C1 is enjoying being off school for the summer. C2 has a new nickname: “Happy Feet.” This little boy does not lack an ounce of energy and almost always offers everyone a huge smile. They are frequently photographed and do not seem to mind it much.

Identity

Ministries. Rob’s books have been translated into multiple languages, and he has appeared on many national television and radio programs. He and his wife, Katrina, reside in the Opryland area of Nashville and in Roan Mountain, Tennessee. They have three daughters and fourteen grandchildren. This event will take place in both the 8:30 AM and 11 AM services. 

We were recently reminded by some mentors to focus on our identity in the Lord. With culture and language stresses, it is easy to lose that focus. No matter what happens in our day—whether we have cultural mishaps or language errors—we belong to Christ. Praise the Lord we can daily place our hope and trust in our God who never wavers! We hope this reminder will be an encouragement to you as you read this too.

A Huge Thanks Thank you, thank you for all of your

support! We could not be more thankful for your giving! Our organization is full of excitement and thanksgiving after receiving this year’s L.M. offering. SBC fellowships are staying true to their desire to see His name made known among the nations. We are blessed that our home fellowship is playing such a tremendous role in giving. We give the Lord our heartfelt thanks for you!

Prayer Please continue praying for our people group, the “Nal” people. We are still many months away from our expected arrival there (Spring/Summer 2017). There is great opposition to the gospel, but He is the Overcomer! As you intercede for us, please ask the Father to give us diligence as we study. We are daily trying to keep the goal in mind of being able to share His truth in the heart language. For us, with 3 languages to learn, it can often seem overwhelming. Ask that we would fix our eyes on Jesus, “the founder and perfecter of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:2). Our next language evaluation is on the evening of August 2nd (morning of August 3rd for us here).

Updates If you are not receiving our monthly email updates, please let us know by emailing scotts.se@asia.com.

What brought you to FBC? The preacher! I had heard Brother Paul preach in the past and had many friends talk about him. They invited me to return to worship with them here.

What have you enjoyed the most so far? The preaching and my Martha Grace Sunday School class with our teacher, Sharon Weber. Our class often takes day trips to shop or to eat, and I enjoy the fellowship.

Congratulations to Brent & Emily Phillips on their new life together. They were married July 16.

Sympathy We offer Christian love and sympathy to Mary (Mark) Owen and Minnie Lou (Tom) Covington in the death of their sister, Wanda Toll Brooks; to Vivien Nemitz and Gaila (David) Taylor in the death of husband and father, Rev. Clarence Nemitz; to Linda Richards and family in the death of her husband, Eddie Richards; to Pat Atherton and family in the death of her husband, Walter Atherton; and to Maeghan (Ryan) Adams in the death of her father, Leon Garrett.
