FROM THE PRESIDENT I hope you are having an enjoyable summer and have taken full advantage of Chartwell. The course is in exceptional condition and used by many members and their guests. It’s nice to drive in to Chartwell and hear the bouncing of the tennis balls, kids laughing and splashing at the pool, and balls being hit on the driving range. All of our Club staff continues to strive for exceptional member experiences. They stay focused on accomplishing this task and I believe they have been successful. Everyone has mishaps, but it is how we respond to these that make the difference. It’s hard to believe summer is already winding down. I hardly remember it starting….. It’s almost time to change our mindset and look towards the fall season. With that said, I ask that you mark your calendars for Tuesday October 27, 2015 for the Annual Chartwell General Meeting. The Board of Directors will present to the membership a fiscal review of the Club. In addition we will review changes made during the year and those to come. Speaking of changes, the Board was approached by a member in early summer requesting a review of the charges imposed by Bylaw Sec.2, 2.5: Subject to the payment of applicable guest fees, unmarried children aged 21 through 25 shall have the use of the club facilities to which their parent(s) are entitled. In an effort to keep our junior members participating in the club, the Board voted to lower their golf fee to $25 per round. The Golf and Membership committees will continue further discussions on the fee structure. Should any additional changes be made the Board will present it at the Annual Meeting. Membership growth and retention is always the number one discussion at the monthly Board meetings. The membership committee and Board reviewed several options and have introduced an “Invitational Membership”. Please see Jay Dixon’s column for details. Although it’s time to bask in the sun, take vacation, and eat watermelon, it’s also time to think about booking your annual holiday parties and gatherings. The Club gets extremely busy immediately following Thanksgiving and dates fill up quickly. Don’t be left out in the snow, book now. Chartwell has received many accolades recently regarding events held at Chartwell. Shortly, we will be featured in What’s Up magazine as a wedding venue. Please keep us in mind if your school, business or organization is looking to host a fund raiser, meeting or outing. We have already begun planning several for 2016 and 2017, so don’t overlook Chartwell as your prime location for these events, let’s keep them coming. I hope to see you on the course, at the pool, or on the courts. Come to Chartwell where you can leave your worries behind and enjoy yourself. See you at the club! – Shauna

Presidents of Chartwell Golf and Country Club

Thank you! The Chartwell Foundation would like to thank Mark Brugnoli, the members of the Deli Committee, and the 64 Chartwell members who participated in the Annual Chartwell Deli in July. Through Mark’s and his committee’s hard work, plus the generosity of the participants – over $28,000 was raised for the Chartwell Foundation. This year’s donation helps the Foundation come closer to its goal of “giving back” $500,000 to our local community before our 10th anniversary this coming January. The Chartwell Family can be proud of the impact that our charitable foundation continues to make in the greater Severna Park community through the grants awarded to local charities such as Hospice, Providence Center, SPAN, and Partners-In-Care along with scholarships presented to local students attending Anne Arundel Community College. Look forward to receiving information on our next event and how you may participate in the 3rd Annual Gwyn Horrigan Golf Tournament scheduled for Sunday, October 18th. We welcome all members of Chartwell to join in this event for a great day of fellowship and golf, while helping us raise funds to continue giving back to our community.

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE Well we are half way through 2015 and I hope this Chatter Article finds everyone well and enjoying times with family and friends. Whether you find yourself at home, away on vacation or here at Chartwell, you are no doubt feeling fortunate to belong to Chartwell and live in such a great area and have so many sites and activities to choose from. Severna Park, Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington D.C. all have so much to offer. With the advent of social media, we can post pictures, snap chat, text, group email, Evite, you name it. We can all inform our circle of friends where and how we spent our time. The Grapevine has now entered the digital age, and now communication is conducted more easily than ever before. Chartwell has become the epicenter of the many things we enjoy doing and it is up to each of us to communicate this to fellow members. The Chatter is just another example of the grapevine

“EACH AND EVERYONE ONE OF US JOINED CHARTWELL TO EXPERIENCE ITS AMENITIES, ADD VALUE TO OUR LIVES, AND SUPPORT THE CLUBS MISSION. WITH THAT BEING SAID WE SHOULD FEEL FREE TO INFORM OTHER MEMBERS OF THE GREAT TIMES HAD BY ALL. ”

Each and everyone one of us joined Chartwell to experience its amenities, add value to our lives, and support the Clubs mission. With that being said we should feel free to inform other members of the great times had by all. Perhaps actively attending club functions, social events, playing golf or tennis, or participating in a committee is the best way to perpetuate the grapevine. We have the ability to have functions at the club such as a birthday party, a business meeting, or a holiday dinner with relatives. The list goes on. We have many lunch and dinner specials that can turn a normal weekday into a great family meal and fun. Talking up the club with each other and taking advantage of being a member is the best way to support the club and the long term investment we have made. Inviting friends, neighbors and acquaintances every opportunity you can, not only helps grow the club with future like-minded people but can ensure the future financial health and success of the club. Chartwell offers many things to its members and the community at large. Being a member gives you a sense of pride about something you have chosen to be a part of. It allows the community to grow and prosper, provides a safe place for our families and friends and provides charitable contributions to those in need through the Chartwell Foundation. This speaks volumes of what Chartwell and it members can do! Let’s support our Club and the community and lead by example. Read the Chatter, stay informed, talk with other members to attend a Wine and Dine event, Rockin' on the Range or have your children attend the summer camp. Experience the Chartwell lifestyle and all that is has to offer. See you at the Club! – Shaun Mahoney

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER As we enter the waning days of summer, there have been so many positive aspects from this season. The temperatures have been quite moderate and great for course conditions. We have had a great time around the pool area. The turnouts for the golf and tennis Leagues, dining events and pool parties have been great. We still encourage more people to attend the next two big events, Labor Day Pool party and Rockin on the Range. As long as the weather holds out these will be great events. For the rest of the summer, we will be focused on ongoing training with our staff. With the addition of Shonda Carter, our Service Operations Manager, we are excited to have the ability to create a better service experience for our members. Shonda will be responsible for Banquet and Dining Room Service at the operations level. Under the direction of Glenn and along with Claire and Caroline, Chartwell is set to improve your dining experience with an ongoing vigilance. This fall and winter, the Board plans a review of the facilities and infrastructure requirements of our Club; as well as, the development of a long term plan to deal with the upgrade or replacement of several systems that are in need of repair. For years, under the leadership of our Facilities Manager, Erick Dorn, we have done a great job holding this aging infrastructure together. However, like everything, facilities and/or systems get old and replacement or repair becomes inevitable. We are fortunate to have a skilled Strategic Planning Committee led by Ernie Brodbeck that has undertaken this review with the attention and detail it deserves. The Board is working closely with the Strategic Planning Committee and Management on both short and long term plans to upgrade our facilities and systems so that the Club stands strong for another 50 years. The Board is also studying the long term feasibility of capital improvements to our Club, including but not limited to, an upgraded pool facility, Golf Course Turf replacement and Clubhouse upgrades. While none of these projects is imminent, we believe projects of this magnitude must be evaluated holistically and a financial plan is needed before any such project is realized. It is the Board of Directors’ goal to provide to the Membership a review and an evaluation of costs for each improvement. We are currently interviewing Master Plan developers to assist in the study and needs of Chartwell. Currently, we are developing our 5 year Capital plan to assist in these needs. I will continue to keep you informed as we progress through the process.

“THE TURNOUTS FOR THE GOLF AND TENNIS LEAGUES, DINING EVENTS AND POOL PARTIES HAVE BEEN GREAT. WE STILL ENCOURAGE MORE PEOPLE TO ATTEND THE NEXT TWO BIG EVENTS, LABOR DAY POOL PARTY AND ROCKIN ON THE RANGE.”

GOLF CARE FOR THE COURSE Unlike many sports, golf is played, for the most part, without the supervision of a referee or umpire. The game relies on the integrity of the individual to show consideration for other players and to abide by the Rules. All players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship at all times, irrespective of how competitive they may be. This is the spirit of the game of golf. Ball marks – also called pitch marks are the bane of smooth-putting and healthy greens on golf courses all over the world. They’re the little depressions, or craters, sometimes made when a golf ball descends from the sky and impacts the putting surface. Repairing those little depressions is very important. Equally important is doing it the right way. Because while many golfers fail to repair ball marks – and shame on you if you are one of them – there are also many well-meaning golfers who do “repair” the pitch marks, only to do so incorrectly. So golfers, let’s all start fixing our ball marks, and doing it the right way. First, stop in the golf shop and pick up our new complimentary divot repair tool. Once you’re on the golf course and have hit your approach shot to the green, locate your ball mark and follow these steps: 1. Gently push the Pitch Pro divot repair tool vertically into and around the raised turf repeatedly. 2. Once the turf has been fluffed and raised towards the middle of the pitch mark, gently smooth the area with your putter. Please do not twist or pull up when repairing a ball mark. This action damages the roots and leaves dead grass or brown spots on the putting surface. Repairing ball marks isn’t just important for the health of the greens, and for smooth-rolling putts. It is our obligation to help take care of the golf courses we play and repair ball marks is a big part of that obligation to the game. Don’t forget about our bunkers. Our maintenance team has had a really tough stretch of weather over the past couple months. They work extremely hard preparing the bunkers for play each day; however it’s our responsibility as golfers to maintain them throughout the day. When entering and exiting the bunker please attempt to do so from the lowest point possible. This will help to preserve the retaining walls of the bunker. Climbing out of the face or highest point of the bunker will most certainly cause damage that is both difficult to repair and expensive. Before leaving a bunker, smooth over all holes and foot prints by pushing the sand away from you. This prevents trench marks which are created by the edges of the rack. And let’s not forget about our fairways. Please do your best to use the sand wisely. Replace divots that are worthy and fill divots with sand. Our goal is always to leave the golf course in better condition than when we played. If we all take the time to care for our golf course, our experience will most certainly be better each time we visit the club.

T H E B E S T PA C E O F P L AY P R A C T I C E S We all strive to become better at the game we have come to love so much. We work with our professional staff on strengthening the parts of our game that need the most attention. This season, I ask all of you to keep in mind, pace of play and how we can all do our part to ensure the enjoyment of our round of golf. Playing at a better pace is not about hurrying up or rushing around the golf course. It is simply about being more efficient with your valuable time, as well as everyone else’s. Adopting this mindset – and not being afraid to share it with your fellow players – will ultimately add enjoyment to your golf experience. Here are some recognized tips for improving pace of play:

JUNIOR GOLF Last month, Old South Country Club hosted the AJGA Qualifier for the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior Tournament. Sydney Mills finished tied for 1st place in the Girls Division, which earned her a spot in the field of 80 boys and 20 girls, ages 12-18, from 11 states. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,672 yards, while the Girls Division played the course at 6,023 yards.

“Tee it Forward” Play from a set of tees that is comfortable for you – one where you are more likely to hit lofted irons into greens instead of hybrids or fairway woods.

Plan your shot before you get to your ball. Determine your yardage and make your club selection before it is your turn to play. Very often, you can do this while others are playing, without disruption.

Keep your pre-shot routine short. Pick your line of play once and trust yourself. Try to take no more than one practice swing, then set up to the ball and play your shot. Most importantly, be ready to hit when it is your turn.

Aim to play in 30 seconds. From club selection to pre-shot routine to execution, strive to hit your shot in 30 seconds when it is your turn to play.

When sharing a cart, use the buddy system. Don’t wait in the cart while your cartmate hits and then drive to your ball. Get out and walk to your ball with a few clubs. Be ready to play when it is your turn and then let your cartmate pick you up. Or, drive to your ball after you drop your cartmate off and then pick him or her up after you hit.

Keep up with the group in front of you. Your correct position on the course is immediately behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you. Arrive at your next shot just before the group in front of you leaves the area in front of you. If you are consistently not able to keep up and a gap opens in front of you, invite the group behind you to play through, irrespective of the number of players in the group.

The next day, Sydney posted 34 on her opening nine and followed it with 39 on the back nine for a total of 73. This positioned Sydney in a three way tied for 3rd place after round 1. Sydney’s steady play over the next two rounds earned her a top 10 finish, posting a three day total of 227. On June 15th, D.A. Regala competed in his first Middle Atlantic PGA Junior Tour event. D.A. and five others battled in the boys 10-11 division at The Suburban Club in Pikesville, MD. He finished in 3rd place posting a score of 49. Last month, D.A. earned his Junior Certification Card at Chartwell. Just a week later, he recorded his career low 9-hole score at Chartwell of 45. D.A. has a true passion for the game of golf, and will certainly be one to watch for in the future.

Be efficient on the putting green. Mark your ball and lift and clean it when you arrive at the putting green so you will be ready to replace it when it is your turn to play. You can usually line up your putt while others are putting, without disturbing them. Leave your clubs on the side of the putting green closest to the next tee, and leave the green promptly after holing out. Wait until the next tee to record your score.

Remember that picking up your ball is permitted by the USGA Handicap System. If not in an individual stroke play competition, it is generally OK to pick up your ball and move on to the next hole if your are “out” of the hole and want to maintain pace of play.

TENNIS All of us on the tennis staff are hoping that you are having a great summer. Play on our tennis courts have been quite active. Our Junior Interclub team with about 50 members on the team have been practicing and playing matches three times a week. Our tennis camp along with high performance camp which run thru the last week of July have been a lot of fun to work with. We have seen quite an improvement with our young tennis players along with their enthusiasm on and off the tennis courts.

"OUR TENNIS CAMP ALONG WITH HIGH PERFORMANCE CAMP WHICH RUN THRU THE LAST WEEK OF JULY HAVE BEEN A LOT OF FUN TO WORK WITH. WE HAVE SEEN QUITE AN IMPROVEMENT WITH OUR YOUNG TENNIS PLAYERS ALONG WITH THEIR ENTHUSIASM ON AND OFF THE TENNIS COURTS."

In June we had a four team “Davis Cup” event at the club, which consisted of men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles play. Each team had four men and four women representing their respective teams. Brian Lewbart who captained his team won the round robin event. I would also like to thank Danielle Boggio for putting together our Ladies Singles Tennis Ladder. We had 16 women play challenge matches for about an eight week period of time where the ladies got to compete with each other. The ladies really had fun playing against other members who they do not either know or play with in a fun competitive situation. Our Tuesday morning Early Bird Workout (6:30am), has been a “big hit”, we have continued this program throughout the summer. On Wednesday evenings (6:30pm), we created a night drill/play session for those members who are unable to play during the day. During August we are looking forward to the following events: August 8 Adult Member/Guest Tournament – 9am August 11-14 All Sports Camp (juniors) August 15 Tennis/Golf Challenge August 21-23 Men/Women’s Doubles Club Championships

Tennis Tip

11 August/September 2015

The return of serve is one of the most essential shots in the game of tennis, but one that is not practiced enough. Usually when you warm up for about 10 minutes or so you can hit quite a few groundstrokes and volleys. But when you start to play your opponent or hitting partner usually take few practice serves, which makes this one of the least practice shots in the game. If you want to start every point well and challenge your opponent you want to make sure that you have a good return of serve. Some of the key factors in having a good return are: good positioning, proper split step with good timing, cutting down the angle (don’t stand too far back behind the baseline), compact backswing, early contact and most importantly do not observe your return –

MEMBERSHIP NEWS There are so many new faces at the Club this summer and the renewed energy is palatable. The pool is hoping; the bar is as lively as ever; the junior programs are raucous with so many families enjoying all that Chartwell has to offer. In short, it’s awesome! The infusion of energy from our new members and our legacy members is a great reminder of what it means to belong to a country club like Chartwell. Membership levels will always ebb and flow and thus continued efforts to attract new members and retain our existing members remains a priority for the Membership Committee. Membership retention is all about improving our value proposition through our programs and service levels. From the dining experience at the pool to the junior golf clinics — the volunteer committees and the staff that support them should be commended for their continued effort to improve in all areas. They all put in a tremendous amount of time and energy to make our experiences at the club exceptional. Member acquisition at any country club is all about sharing your experience with friends and families who aren’t already members. Chartwell is no different. We rely on your referrals to attract new members. And it’s our newest members who offer the most opportunity, so please invite guests to experience the club and encourage them to join. A healthy and vibrant membership base increases the value of all of our memberships and our overall experience at the club. We’ve employed several very successful membership acquisition programs over the last 18 months. The Membership Committee and the Board agree that we need to develop a more systematic approach to membership acquisition beyond special incentive programs. After researching programs across the country, we’ve implemented an Invitational Membership opportunity for new, Full Family Golf A memberships. The Invitational Membership is a 3-year, limited term membership designed for candidates who may be uncertain of their length of stay in the area.

These members will have access to all of the club’s amenities on the same basis as a Full Family Golf A Membership. There is an initial, non-refundable initiation fee of $7,500 as well as a contractual obligation to pay all monthly dues and assessments of a Full Family Golf A member for the entire 3-year term. The Invitational Membership may be converted to a Full Family Golf A membership at anytime during the 3-year term. If converted before the first anniversary, the member would receive a 20% discount off the balance of the $25,000 initiation. If they converted prior to their second anniversary, they would receive a 10% discount off the $25,000 initiation. If they converted after their second anniversary or at the end of the 3-year term, there would be no discount off the balance of the $25,000 initiation. At the end of the 3-year term, the membership can be converted to Full Family Golf A or terminated. Members may not reapply for another Invitational Membership. The Invitational Membership only applies to new members for the Full Family Golf A category. If you know of a potential new member who may be interested in this opportunity, or have any other questions regarding other details not included here, please contact Michael Fay. Finally, the Membership Committee will be evaluating a systematic outreach program to more effectively market the benefits of the Club to the community at large on a consistent basis. Based on what I’ve seen so far this summer, a vibrant Chartwell is clearly evident. Let’s keep it that way!
