Greetings from the Director Dear Student, The staff of the Department of Housing and Residential Life is excited that you may be joining us in the near future. Living on campus is one of the best ways to get connected quickly at FAU. There are many choices in selecting a room and building. We have a variety of room arrangements and lifestyle options. The Living Learning Communities in Heritage Park Towers are rapidly becoming the place to be! Glades Park Towers is available to new, first-year students and offers specific programs and academic offerings. We welcome upperclass and graduate students to our newest apartments at Innovation Village, offering the comforts of home with the convenience of campus life. Living on campus is part of your recipe for success. Studies of college and university students across the country have shown that on-campus living increases the success rate of those students. Satisfaction levels, rates of graduation and grades are better for those students who choose to live on campus. Get to Know FAU Housing and Residential Life The Department of Housing and Residential Life is ready to assist you in making your new home a positive environment that will support your academic pursuits. Trained staff are located in each of the residence hall areas and apartments to help you work out concerns, listen to what’s on your mind and organize the fun and exciting programs offered in your community. Our full-time, professionally trained Resident Coordinators live on campus and supervise the housing communities. Each area is also staffed with Resident Assistants (RAs). Our RAs are upper-division undergraduate students and graduate students who have been specifically selected and trained to provide assistance and maintain a supportive academic atmosphere within your community.

ers Get Your Freshman Year Experience at Glades Park Tow Glades Park Towers is a suite-style residence hall consisting of both double and single rooms. The Towers caters to every student’s needs, including its own Outtakes convenience store, which is centrally located in the lobby—a perfect place to grab a quick bite while on the go. Your college experience begins here as a first year freshman, and every room in Glades Park Towers is fully furnished. All bedrooms feature unlimited access to Ethernet connections and basic cable television service. Additionally, Glades Park Towers offers a 24-hour desk operation, floor study lounges, multipurpose room with large-screen TV, laundry facilities, conference room, computer lab, classroom and the convenience store. Features for each room include an extra-long bed (36” X 80” extra-long twin mattress), desk, chair and dresser. Residents may bring a small refrigerator and/or microwave. Refrigerators should be 3.6 cubic feet or smaller and should have a maximum of 400 watts at 120 volts. Microwave ovens should be 1.4 cubic feet capacity or smaller and should have a maximum of 1,100 watts at 120 volts. All students living in Glades Park Towers participate in the First-Year Student Housing (FYSH) Program and take a college success course, SLS 1503, in the fall semester; for convenience many sections of this class are offered within the building.

Be Part of the Community at Heritage Park Towers Heritage Park Towers (HPT) a suite-style residence hall consisting of both double and single rooms for both freshmen and upperclassmen. Build Your Sense of Belonging at Algonquin Hall Algonquin Hall is a suite-style residence hall, designed to satisfy the needs of both upperclassmen and freshmen. The hall was renovated in 2007 to update the facilities and provides solely single rooms to ensure complete comfort for its residents. Algonquin Hall, being cozy and having convenience is foremost in the minds of its residents. Each side of the suite accommodates two residents who share a common living area. In addition, every bedroom is equipped with unlimited network (Ethernet) access and basic cable television service. Algonquin Hall also provides students with a computer lab, laundry facilities and multipurpose room with a large screen TV. Each room in Algonquin Hall is fully furnished with an extra-long bed (36” X 80” extra-long twin mattress), desk, chair and dresser. There is one microfridge in the common area. Residents are allowed to have one small refrigerator in the bedroom. Refrigerators should be 3.6 cubic feet or smaller. Personal microwaves are not allowed.

Enjoy Apartment Living at University Village The University Village Apartments provides more than 500 upper-division undergraduate and graduate students a cozy and special living environment. Each room in University Village Apartments is fully furnished with an extra-long bed (36” X 80” extra-long twin mattress), desk, chair and dresser. Residents are allowed to furnish the apartments with their own microwave oven that is 1.4 cubic feet capacity or smaller and has a maximum of 1,100 watts at 120 volts. The University Village Apartments caters to the budding chef as all kitchens are equipped with a refrigerator and oven/cooktop. The University Village Apartments offers its residents two floor plans: a four-bedroom apartment and a studio efficiency. The four-bedroom apartments, which are two-story units, featuring a furnished living/dining area and kitchen on one floor and bedrooms on a separate floor. Studio efficiencies offer a large, open area that serves as both a bedroom and living area for two same-gender students. Building Tradition at Innovation Village Phase one of the Innovation Village Apartments will include the construction of two apartment buildings, totaling 500,000 square feet and providing 1,216 beds for upperclassmen and graduate students. The complex will feature a seven-story building, an eight-story building, a lush courtyard with green spaces, an outdoor pool, sand volleyball courts, convenience store, computer lab, “smart” conference rooms and multipurpose activity room. The impetus for this project was the desire to enhance a sense of tradition, pride and student life on FAU’s Boca Raton campus.

INNOVATION VILLAGE SOUTH APARTMENT The south building is a seven-story high-rise that houses 148 apartments in a four-bedroom/two-bathroom layout. The building includes a community-style laundry facility, a fitness room and a host of other amenity arrangements.

Business & Professional Women’s Scholarship House The FAU Business and Professional Women’s Scholarship House (BPWSH) was established to provide campus housing for women with strong academic promise and substantial outside financial assistance in order to attend FAU. The BPWSH is a cooperative living/learning facility where 16 women share leadership experience, develop life skills, and community responsibilities. To be eligible for the Program, an applicant must meet the following criteria: • Enrolled as a full-time, degree-seeking female student who is a freshman, transfer or current undergraduate or graduate student, a resident may be required to withdrawal from BPWSH if enrolled credit hours drop below full-time status. • Requires substantial outside financial assistance in order to attend college (a minimum of $1,500 of unmet need as determined by the applicant’s FAU Student Financial Aid Award Letter or Student Aid Report).

• Must have a high school, college/university or FAU cumulative GPA of 3.0 and semester GPA of 2.75. • Demonstrated high academic promise and achievement in high school and/or college. • Show a strong desire to work for a college education and show willingness to actively participate in a cooperative woman’s scholarship environment.

Living Learning Communities at Heritage Park Towers The Living Learning Community (LLC) program at FAU offers incoming freshmen the unique and engaging opportunity to live on the same floor (in Heritage Park Towers–North) with other incoming freshmen with similar academic goals and interests.

The FYSH Program at Glades Park Towers The First-Year Student Housing (FYSH) program at Glades Park Towers provides you the opportunity to succeed as you make the transition to college life. As a resident of GPT, you are automatically part of this program with 600 other students.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE FYSH PROGRAM: • Enroll in SLS 1503: Learning Strategies and Human Development during the Fall semester • Participate in the Freshman Reading program

• Be a resident of Glades Park Towers • Be taking college courses for the first time

WITH FYSH YOU WILL: • Develop a connection with Florida Atlantic University • Become an active participant in your floor, building and campus communities

• Take part in educational, social and personal development activities • Develop and improve leadership skills

As a resident in the FYSH program, you are strongly encouraged to participate in the FYSHing Tournament. You will earn points for attending campus and community events, maintaining a strong GPA and participating in intramural sports. Points are tracked by Residence Life staff and FYSHing Tournament winners are announced on a monthly, semester and yearly basis.

Student Programming and Involvement Opportunities Living on campus provides you with more than just a place to live. We invite you to take advantage of the many opportunities to get involved in the housing and campus communities. There are always programs and activities to attend—many of our students even help in the planning of events that are of particular interest to them. In addition, there are various organizations in which you can participate. Several of these groups serve as a representative voice for the residents of housing and also plan various social and community service events.

Resident Student Association and Community Council Resident Student Association (RSA) is open to all residents and gives students the chance to organize, support and participate in Housing and campus activities. RSA provides you the opportunity to become involved in planning events for students and providing input on decisions made by University Housing. RSA is seen on a campus-wide level and participates in some of FAU’s larger events, such as Homecoming and Clubfest. RSA is the parent organization for six Community Councils held within each of the residence halls: • Algonquin Hall Community Council (AHCC) • Apartments Community Council (ACC) • Glades Community Council (GCC) • Heritage Park Community Council (HPCC) • Towers Community Council (TCC) • Innovation Village Community Council (IVCC)

These Community Councils serve as the liaisons between the residence hall buildings and RSA. Together RSA and the CCs put on both educational and social programs, and hold meetings as an open forum for residents of that CC to voice their opinions and concerns with their building. RSA provides wonderful opportunities for students to not only become an involved student leader in University Housing, but also with other FAU clubs and organizations. Housing Contract Process The Department of Housing and Residential Life does not guarantee your choice of residence hall or room preferences. Assignments are done on a first-come, first served basis and on space availability. To apply for housing, please follow the steps below: • You must have a FAU student ID and password. • Login to MyFAU.fau.edu. • Enter user name and password. • Click on the “Students” tab. • In the “Housing and Residential Life” channel, click on “Housing Online”. • If you see a warning message click “continue”. • If prompted click “Login” under ApplyOnline. • Depending on when you are applying for Housing, as well as which campus, you will see a drop-down menu of Housing Contract options. Select the correct contract term before clicking “next”. • Read through the entire contract before agreeing to it. • Print a copy of the contract for your own records. • If you are required to pay a deposit, the system will display a message. • The next web page is the Housing Contract questions page. Answer all Housing Contract Questions as these answers are very important to us. • You may select your preference for building and room type on the Living Preference page. • If you are required to pay a deposit the system will forward you to the online payment site. You can pay by Credit Card or Electronic Check. •

Upon successful completion and submission of your on-line contract, you will see a notification on your screen saying “Thanks for submitting your contract”. A copy of this page will be sent to your FAU e-mail account. If you do not see the “Thanks for submitting your contract” page your submission failed. We will not be able to process your contract and you will have to resubmit the contract!

If you want to access your Housing Assignment and Roommate information follow these steps: • You must have submitted a Housing Contract or live on campus currently. • Login to MyFAU.fau.edu. • Click on “Housing Online”. • If prompted, click “Login” under MyHousing. • Once on the MyHousing page, you can view your information, current/future room assignments and roommates, future roommate requests and any ongoing current/future room selection processes.

To Select a roommate • Log in to MyHousing. • In the navigation menu, select “Room Selection” and “Roommate Selection”. • Enter the Z-Number of the student you would like to request as your roommate/suitemate. Remember: ♦ the student you are requesting must also have a valid contract or assignment. ♦ the roommate request MUST be mutual… this means that he or she will have to request you as well. •

You can select/change roommates before the assignment process begins in May for the Fall semester or November for the Spring semester.

Freshman Residency Requirement All full-time freshmen are required to reside in University Housing. Any freshman who wishes to receive an exemption must complete a Housing Exemption Request Form. This form is available at www.fau.edu/housing or by calling the Department of Housing and Residential Life at 561-297-2880. Exemption requests must be received and approved before August 15 for Fall and December 15 for Spring. Freshman student residency will be verified for compliance at the start of each semester. Exemptions from this policy are made for students who: • Are 21 or older by the first day of class. • Reside with parent(s) or legal guardian(s) within a 50-mile radius of the Boca Raton campus.

FAU Dining Services THE RESIDENT DINING PROGRAM — LEAVE THE COOKING TO US A student’s life can get a little hectic, and the last thing you want to worry about is cooking. In order to help you to manage your time and provide you with a complete array of dining choices, FAU’s Dining Services provides convenience and flexibility, allowing you to choose from a variety of food choices and meal plans.

THE CENTRE MARKETPLACE Picture yourself enjoying an array of delicious menu options in the Centre Marketplace, conveniently located adjacent to the Student Union. Unlike a traditional cafeteria, the Centre Marketplace features restaurant-style concepts prepared right in front of you all day long. You can choose when and what you want to eat in this all-you-care-to-eat facility. The Centre Marketplace is open for meals from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday – Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on weekends. (Hours of operation are subject to change.) Select from creative entrees and flavors from around the world, which are presented in styles and portions that will suit everyone’s tastes. Order a charbroiled burger hot off the grill, a hearty sandwich from Bocadillos, or a freshly made salad from Wild Greens. Home-style baked goods and fragrant coffees are available at Pastelitos Café and Terre Ve serves up a wide selection of menu items that follow strict vegetarian guidelines. You may even want to watch as our chefs prepare sizzling fajitas or omelets at the Menutainment station.

RESIDENCE HALL MEAL PLAN REQUIREMENTS AND OPTIONS Since our residence halls do not provide adequate cooking facilities for individual and regular food preparation, all students living in University residence halls are required to participate in the Resident Dining program. Each Dining Meal Plan includes a certain number of meals per week, plus two free guest meals per semester. Some of the meal plans also include “Flex Bucks,” each worth one dollar. The Flex Bucks provide you with the ability to eat meals, without needing cash, at any of our on-campus retail dining operations, including the restaurants in the Breezeway Café. The amount of Flex Bucks varies per plan. Flex Bucks expire at the end of each semester.

Residents are required to complete a Campus Meal Plan Contract in addition to their housing contract. Residents may complete and submit the contract online, print a copy and submit it by mail. You may “upgrade” your requested preferences, but are responsible for paying any additional costs. Housing on the John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter, Florida Residence Hall 1 (JU1) and Residence Hall 2 (JU2) are suite-style residence halls consisting of single rooms for both freshmen and upperclassmen. All suites feature a living area and two bathroom facilities. JU1 was opened in August 1999 and JU2 opened in August 2001. Each bedroom is equipped with unlimited access Ethernet connections and basic cable television service. Both buildings offer a multipurpose room with large-screen TV and laundry facilities. Features for each room include an extra-long bed (36” x 80” extra-long twin mattress), desk chair, dresser and closet. Residents may bring a small refrigerator and/or microwave. Refrigerators should be 3.6 cubic feet or smaller and have a maximum of 400 watts at 120 volts. Microwave ovens should be 1.4 cubic feet or smaller and have a maximum of 1,100 watts at 120 volts. Residents are expected to provide their own linens, towels, table lamps, cleaning supplies and trash recepticles. Students may also bring televisions, stereos and computers but may want to wait until they have received their suitemate/roommate assignments to determine their specific needs. Enhancing the student experience, the buildings share a courtyard featuring outdoor seating and a barbecue grill.

What is the MacArthur Resident Student Association? MacArthur Resident Student Association is an organization made up of students who live in the residence halls on the MacArthur (Jupiter) campus. Any student who lives on campus is eligible to be a member of MacRSA. MacRSA’s purpose is to represent the students who live in the residence halls on the Jupiter campus of FAU, as well as provide programming and other social activities for the students. All students are welcome to attend the meetings, and each floor has a representative that votes in the best interest of the floor that they represent. Meetings are held on a weekly basis and provide the students with information about the various activities occurring on-campus and within the residence halls, as well as address concerns and issues that are brought up.
