Cottage J oy One day I was lamenting to my grandmother. It was about the time we’d just had our sixth child and lived in a new 1700 square foot home. Someone else I knew had just bought a 5000 square foot home and had one child. I was saying how small our home was and how big their’s was. I was comparing and had space envy. My Gram came from the Great Depression era and knew of not having. She could’ve told me to be grateful for what I had. And rightfully so. But she didn’t. She heard me out and then said, “You have more love in that little house than will ever be in that big one.” She wasn’t really saying that the other home didn’t have love. She was gently reminding me of what I had, lots of love, and the size of the house didn’t matter for that. She was so right. Thanks Gram. The idea of the small house has stayed with me. I’m reminded of it when we sing a line from an old hymn at church, “in the cottage there is joy, when there’s love at home.” Cottages represent closeness, connecting, but most of all, love.
Cottage Joy is my debut fabric collection with Windham Fabrics. It represents the beauty of love and I couldn’t think of a better way than with lots and lots of flowers.
