Prepping and Priming

Before you play with colour, you can transform your skin into a beautiful “canvas” with a few basic skin care and priming steps.

Cleansing The first step to a beautiful face is a consistent skin care regimen. With proper skin care, your foundation will look its best. Be sure to cleanse twice a day – in the morning and before bed – with a cleanser designed for your skin type. Avoid going to bed with makeup still on your face.

Moisturising Moisturising restores balance to your skin. It’s important to use a moisturiser designed for your skin type. Massage moisturiser into your skin and let it absorb before applying anything else. Applying colour immediately after moisturising can result in a streaky finish.

Priming Foundation primer helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and imperfections and helps extend foundation wear. You may even find that you use less foundation when you use a primer. TO APPLY: Apply before foundation to the T-zone area, which is the forehead, nose and chin area, blending outward to the edges of the face.

What is your skin type?

Picking the Right Foundation Shade Try to match your natural skin tone as closely as possible. The best way to find the perfect foundation shade is to do the stripe test: • Swipe foundation from cheek to jawline. If the foundation seems to disappear, then you’ve found your shade. • View in natural light if possible. • When in doubt, go for a light or midtone shade. You can always lighten or bronze if needed.

Mixing Shades If you can’t find the shade you think is best, you can mix your own. This works best with liquid foundation. Mix the shades in the palm of your hand and apply with a Mary Kay® Liquid Foundation Brush. TIP: If you have foundation left over, add to your concealer and use on the areas that need extra coverage. This helps create a more natural-looking finish. Makeup artists today suggest applying foundation before perfecters, like facial highlighting pens and concealers, to get the most natural-looking finish.

Perfecters Perfect your flawless face to help it appear its most youthful. Start by lifting away shadows and concealing imperfections.

Facial Highlighting Pen Help optically “lift” shadowy areas of the face to add brightness and radiance instantly. Shadows can make areas on the face appear sunken, swollen or saggy and even older. TO APPLY: Turn the tip clockwise to release product. If you release too much product, you can brush it onto the top of your hand and then apply brush to your face. Use the pen’s brush to apply lightly to the shadowy areas of the face, then blend with your finger or a sponge.

For shadowy areas

Apply to inner corners of eyes, outer edge of the nose and under the lower lip in a downward and outward motion.

For puffy eyes

Apply just below the puffy area, only highlighting the shadow under the puffiness (not the puffy area) to “lift” it and make the area appear more flat. Then use your ring finger to lightly pat the edges to blend.

Concealer For areas of the face that need additional coverage. TO APPLY: Use a concealer brush, a sponge or your finger. With a sponge or finger, use a dabbing motion instead of a swiping motion, which can actually remove concealer. Dabbing to blend helps create a smooth, flawless finish. With a brush, use small strokes.

Mary Kay® Concealer

For harder-to-conceal areas like blemishes, use the following steps: FOR AGE SPOTS Blend concealer in with your natural skin tone by concentrating it on the discoloured area. Apply it to the spot only and gently pat with your finger to blend. FOR BLEMISHES Apply a light “veil” of concealer directly to the blemish and use your ring finger to lightly pat around the edges to blend. Add a second layer if needed. FOR DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYE Apply concealer at the edge of the dark area and extend up. Never go below the dark area or you’ll lighten the skin you’re trying to match. Be sure to include the inside corner of the eyes and eyelids if necessary. For serious dark circles, you can use a concealer one or two shades lighter than your skin’s natural tone.

TIP: Offer your customer the concealer shade that best matches her natural skin tone. She can mix it with her liquid foundation for a perfect match.

Facial Highlighting Pen vs. Concealer A highlighting pen illuminates or draws an area or feature forward on the face. Concealer is best for covering scars and blemishes.

Finishers Every flawless face needs a few finishing touches.

Powder Help “set” makeup, reduce shine and create a matte finish. • Translucent loose powder is great for any skin tone. • Pressed powder can be applied lightly or pressed into skin for more coverage and also is portable when carried in the Mary Kay® Compact. TO APPLY: Use downward strokes from forehead to the chin and out to edges of the face. You also can apply to the eye area and around the nose with a clean Mary Kay® Eye Colour Brush.

For translucent loose powder Mary Kay® Translucent Loose Powder

Dip or dust Mary Kay® Powder Brush into powder and tap off the excess. Use a very light hand in applying. The powder brush distributes powder evenly over the face without concentrating in any one area.

For pressed powder Sweep brush or sponge across powder and dust onto skin. Remember to apply in light layers and build to the matte finish you want. For more intense coverage, swipe sponge across powder and press sponge onto skin, especially concentrating on the forehead, nose and chin.

Cheek Colour CHOOSING COLOUR: Choose a shade that is similar to your natural blushing skin tone. CHOOSING FORMULA: Mineral cheek colour is sheer and buildable. Mineral cheek colour leaves a matte or shimmery finish, depending on the shade. TIP: The key to enhancing a woman’s beauty comes from knowing where to apply cheek colour for her face shape.

TO APPLY: Cheek colour should be applied last, after powder, to give your look a healthy glow. When applying cheek colour, the goal is to achieve a radiant finish, not a concentrated area of colour that can look severe. Start cheek colour application on the apples of the cheeks (the fullest part of the cheek when you smile) and extend along cheekbones.

Mary Kay® Mineral Cheek Color

For mineral cheek colour Start by sweeping a Mary Kay® Cheek Brush lightly through colour and tap off excess. Apply colour in a circular motion across the cheekbones. Use light layers to build the radiance you like.

Finishing Spray As a final step, makeup finishing spray keeps makeup looking freshly applied for hours. Works on any skin type. TO APPLY: Shake bottle well. Close eye, and hold bottle 8 to10 inches from face. Mist face 2 to 4 times in an “X” formation.

Square With strong facial features, this face shape is of equal width at the forehead, cheek and chin.

Soften the â&#x20AC;&#x153;cornersâ&#x20AC;? of the face with bronzing powder dusted along upper sides of forehead and sides of the jawline.

Oval This symmetrical face shape can experiment with different applications.

Bronzing Powder Highlighting Powder Cheek Colour

Heart-Shaped This face shape features a forehead that is wider than the chin, and the chin tapers to a narrow point. Contour the sides of the temples under the cheekbones with bronzing powder to help the face appear more narrow. Highlight the top and sides of the chin to help it appear wider. Sweep cheek colour to center of cheeks, just below the pupils of the eyes and sweep back toward hairline.

Round A round face features shorter, wider, full cheeks.

To help the face appear more narrow, contour the edges of the face with bronzing powder. Apply cheek colour in a 45째 angle to accentuate cheekbone structure.

Contouring With Foundation Mary Kay Global Makeup Artist Sally Wang details how to use makeup effects to create a three-dimensional look, help sculpt a V-shaped face and minimise angles to create narrow facial features.

Three Steps to Contour Try one or all of these effects to achieve the contoured look you want.

Apply two foundation shades.

Apply concealer.

Finish with highlighting powder.

• Apply foundation all over face in a shade that matches skin tone.

With the Mary Kay® Cream Eye Color/Concealer Brush, apply concealer to facial areas that you’d like to accentuate:

• Hold the Mary Kay® Cheek Brush or Mary Kay® Kabuki Brush by the base of the bristles to make it a little tighter. Apply highlighting powder to the nose and the top of cheekbones. Apply in sweeping motions rather than a circular, swirling motion.

• Then apply foundation that is one to three shades darker than your natural shade to the outer areas of the face in a “3” formation, using a Mary Kay® Foundation Brush. See diagram. • Blend well. • Also apply contouring foundation shade to the nose for a narrow look. Holding the Mary Kay® Cream Eye Color/Concealer Brush like a pencil, draw two lines down the bridge of the nose. Blend with feathering strokes down the sides of the nose, until the lines seem to disappear. See Page 10 for foundation shade selection.

TIP

Liquid Foundation Brush Use the Mary Kay Liquid Foundation Brush first to apply the different shades of foundation and then buff out both shades using the mineral foundation brush. This can be a great way to give your face a very natural-looking contour. ®

On the colour wheel, find colours opposite your selection.

Example: If you choose green because you have green eyes, you will see that red is its complementary colour. So you would want to try red-based hues like earthy browns, purples, rust or bronze.

Colours across the wheel are known as complementary colours.

Do you want to pick eye shades based on your favourite shade family? Some women are just drawn to a certain colour or shade family.

Do you want a natural look?

On the colour wheel, find colours immediately left or right of your selection.

Example: If you choose green because you have green eyes, you will see that blue and yellow are adjacent colours. So you would want to try bluebased or golden yellow shades.

Filling in Sparse Brows Define the shape of your brow with a brow definer pencil in a shade lighter than your eyebrow colour. Then go over it again with a pencil in a darker shade to emphasise the shape. You need very little colour.

Selling Tip: Help your customer get wow brows. Ask her to follow the “groom brows” and “define brows” steps on one brow. Once finished, ask her to compare to her other natural brow to see her “wow” results!

Eyeliner Thick or thin. Liquid, pencil or powder. Every day or dramatic application. Eyeliner is a versatile, fun and easy way to experiment with colour to update or create a new look.

EASY EYELINER APPLICATION Draw a line across the lashline (upper or lower) in the thickness desired. An easy way to do this is to draw three short interconnecting lines across the lashline instead of one continuous line. Then you can connect or blend the line with a thin, angled brush, a sponge-tip applicator or your finger. To create a thicker line, simply repeat this process.

TIP: For eyes with a vanishing lid common in Asian women, apply a lighter shade of eyeliner or eye colour to the lower lashline to help eyes appear more open.

Pencil = Defined line Pencils create a defined line so you have flexibility to draw a thick or thin line. They also have intense colour pigment so the colour will be rich when applied.

Liquid = Dramatic line For precise lining that can be more dramatic, liquid is an easy way to achieve the look you want. You can add a winged tip on the edge by gently ticking up the line at the outer edge. TIPS: You may find it useful to draw your line in pencil and trace over the same line with liquid or gel liner. You can keep eye makeup remover nearby with a cotton swab to gently remove any mistakes. It’s best to not apply liquid eyeliner on the lower lashline as it can make eyes look narrow. DEFINITION Eyes that are about one eye width apart. If applying three shades, add a midtone shade as a wash all over eyelid and blend well with a clean Mary Kay速 Eye Color Brush. The goal is to seamlessly blend shades but continue to maintain the definition and accents created from your highlighting and contour shades.

DEFINITION Eyes with an eyelid that is not readily seen.

Hooded Eyes

Apply contour shade along the top of the entire length of the eye crease and blend upward almost to the brow. This will add dimension to the eyes and give the illusion of a deeper eye crease.

If applying three shades, add a midtone shade along browbone, blending well.

Wide-Set Eyes

DEFINITION Eyes that are more than one eye width apart. To help eyes appear closer together, apply the contour shade from inner corner of the eyes, extend up to eye crease and sweep along eye crease just to outer edge of eye and along lashline. Do not extend past the outer edge of the lashline. Then add contour shade along entire lower lashline. If applying three shades, follow the guidelines for standard eye application. It is important to remember to not apply colour beyond the outer edge of eyelid for best effect.

Lightest shade. Used to brighten eyes. A medium-range shade to help blend eye colour shades. (Usually a neutral shade.) Deepest or darkest shade. Used to create depth to eyes.

DEFINITION Eyes that are set deep with a prominent brow bone.

Deep-Set Eyes

With the contour shade, trace a line from inner corner of the eye crease to the brow bone. Continue applying along brow bone and finish by applying under outer lower third of the lashline. Blend well.

If applying three shades, apply the contour shade to entire eyelid and add a midtone shade to the browbone, just above the eye crease.

Close-Set Eyes

DEFINITION Eyes that are less than one eye width apart. Apply the contour shade, only to the outer corners, in a softly blended triangle shape. This helps the eyes appear further apart. Blend contour shade along outer lower third of lashes. If applying three shades, follow the guidelines for standard eye application. It is important to remember to concentrate darkest shades at the outer edges of the eyes.

DEFINITION Eyes with a vanishing eyelid, commonly appearing in Asian eyes, appear as a flat surface when closed due to a lack of a natural crease.

Single Eyelid Eyes

Similar to the standard application, apply contour shade in a large sideways â&#x20AC;&#x153;Vâ&#x20AC;? shape, starting from the inner eye corner, just above the eye crease and sweeping back to outer third of upper lashline. Then sweep contour along the outer third of the lower lashline. This will create the illusion of a larger eyelid.

If applying three shades, apply to the a midtone along the brow bone.

Apply Moonstone mineral eye colour with a tapping motion with the eye colour brush from lashline to the crease. Even though it is a powder this application makes it easier to “pack” the colour right on the eyelid. You want maximum gold shine here.

Next, apply Peacock Blue mineral eye color in the crease starting heavy at the outer corner and blending in. I like to start with almost a line right at the crease and blending from there, blend and then blend again! Use the eye color brush to blend it all well.

To finish, apply Azure mineral eye color along the lower lashline with the Eyeliner/Eyebrow Brush.

Then add a bit of Peacock Blue mineral eye colour right at the corner and blend into Azure mineral eye colour. This adds depth and brings all the colours together beautifully.

Finish with Black gel eyeliner. Begin with a very thin line at the inner eye corner and widen to a thicker line at the outer corner. You can wing the gel eyeliner slightly at the outer corner for even more drama.

Apply lipstick in a shade close to your natural lip tone or one or two shades darker. Start in the middle of the upper lip, sweeping to the corners. Then repeat application on the bottom lip. Blot lips with a tissue.

For a bit of shine or to create colour combinations, apply lip gloss, following the same steps suggested for lipstick application.

Mix a bit of lipstick (dark reds and berries work best) with a tiny bit of lip balm like Satin Lips® Lip Balm. You can use the back of your hand if you don’t have a makeup palette.

Apply clear lip liner to natural lip line. You can fill in the entire lip to help lip colour last longer. Clear lip liner is perfect for bold lip colours because it works with any lip colour and helps to keep it from bleeding. Dark lip liners can end up making lip lines looking overdrawn or obvious. Apply red lipstick with a brush, starting in the middle of the lower lip and slowly working out toward the outer edges. You can use the Mary Kay® Concealer/Cream Eye Brush, but remember: never use this brush with eye product without washing first.

A woman’s age is her secret. Keeping it a secret is easy when she follows these simple guidelines for wearing colour flawlessly – no matter her age. SKIN CARE MATTERS. A consistent, advanced age-fighting skin care regimen is key for keeping skin looking its best.

Choose Colours With Confidence. EYES: Neutral eye colours are always flattering. In general, women with fine lines should be selective when wearing shimmer shades. For example, wear it only as a highlight on the eye.

LIPS: Medium-bright or complexion-compatible shades help make lips look younger. Pinks, peaches or watermelon shades look great with silver hair. Avoid stark, bright shades or very pale neutral shades – both can leave your complexion looking faded. Avoid lots of shimmer in lip colour.

CHEEKS: To achieve a natural, youthful glow, try soft, warm shades. Avoid shimmer that can accentuate fine lines.

Application Tips. FOUNDATION/CONCEALER:

Too much product of any sort can settle into fine lines and wrinkles. Always apply lightly and build to the coverage you like. When in doubt, use less.

EYES: • Curling lashes helps to open the eyes. Apply two light coats of mascara rather than one heavy coat. • Apply soft, neutral eyeliners close to upper lashline only, avoiding the lower lashline. Smudge with a brush, sponge-tip applicator or cotton swab. • For lower lashline, use mineral eye colour instead of eyeliner. Harsh lines along the lower lashline can draw attention to fine lines.

LIPS: • Apply lip liner, such as Mary Kay® Lip Liner in Clear, along natural lip line. Lip liner help prevent lip colour from bleeding or feathering.

CHEEKS: • A tip to keep cheek colour natural is to dip cheek brush in mineral cheek colour, then lightly dip in loose powder before applying.
