FRANCE

THE METROPOLE OF ART! wardrobe. This highlighted the initation of feminism and the struggle for women’s rights in the world. The high fashion houses that create tailored clothing just for your shape are like a dream, that some people will only carry on dreaming of. It’s like a secret society where only the rare ones get to have a look and are worthy to wear some of these works of art.

Street artists, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the nightly narrow streets, love, coffee and cigarettes, exquisite wine and of course, the French fashion. These are just a few things that comes to mind, when I think of France. All of these things are like a magical breeze, that glosses over us and makes our body dance the waltz. The old movies tell us that France is the land of lovers, and I think that it is true even nowadays. France exudes love for fashion, love for the small everyday emotions and maybe the clichéd but important love between two people. Afterall love is the key! It doesn’t matter if you love fashion, your family, or even yourself. The feeling and the passion of love is what is important, and it makes you feel fullfilled. France is one of the most iconic countries of the world. It has brought Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent , Christian Dior and many other artists to us, and they each have created their own revolution in the world of art, and that’s reflected all over the background of the world. French fashion has always been a lot different from other fashion metropoles. It’s more fine, delicate and in some ways more ethereal, but it doesn’t mean there’s no power in it. French fashion has great power! Coco Chanel showed women that you don’t have to wear corsets but instead you can borrow a suit from a man’s

French haute couture as a term is protected by the law. It seems like it’s a sign, that points to the fact that fashion in France is like a person, that feels, changes, cries every now and then, but always walks with head held high, because France can afford a... Sincerely,

Some interesting facts about Coco Chanel. H S he was born in France in 1883 and was part of a big family, as one of five children. H W hen Coco was 12, her mother passed away from tuberculosis and her father left the family; she spent the next six years in an orphanage. H S he became a licensed hat-maker and owned her first shop in 1910. H S he introduced her first perfume, Chanel No. 5, in 1922, and it was one of the first perfumes ever to mix natural and artificial essences. H S he invented the “Little Black Dress” in 1926, which French Vogue dubbed “Chanel’s Ford”, for its practicality and marketability.

H S he is credited with popularizing the concept of “costume jewelry” in the 1920s, creating seasonal jewelry that mixed fake pearls with real stones. H S he introduced the idea of using jersey fabric to create clothing, which had prior been used only for men’s undergarments. H S he and her brand are most well known for costume jewelry, two-tone shoes, quilted bags, and simple suits made of tweed or jersey. H Her classic Chanel suit became famous for its flattering cut, simple fabric, and specially weighted lining, to give it that perfect hang. H S he died in 1971 at the Ritz Hotel in Paris at the age of 88. 3

Designer Anete Krišjanova Baltic Style Latvian fashion designer Anete Krišjanova is based in Riga. She is embarking on her career after studying Design & Pattern Making at RDMV and the Art Academy of Latvia. Anete‘s work was chosen to be the first featured here in Fashion Illustrated. Her bold graphic style grabs attention and her fluid lines represent her ideas and moods quite well. We hope you enjoy her work as much as we do.

In her own words The fashion scene in Riga is truly versatile. Right now the design community is focused on a youth movement in fashion, lots of bright colors and ornamentation, we have a growing l egion of sophisticated brands that are conceptual and their creations are becoming more and more established in the fashion scene. While it may not be perfect, it is refreshing to see many innovative ideas come to life. It is great to see that for those who work hard, but keep their vision and values in design intact, success comes rightly. I would lie if I told you that life in Riga fashion scene is easy, but to me - it’s honest! Myself, I love fashion and never get tired because fashion itself is a perfect thing to do and work in. I never get tired of thinking about the way to invent clothing that makes a person more beautiful. I adore modifying proportions to not to hide contours of a body but to accent what’s best and most beautiful about a body. Sketching never get boring because I’m so excited to see what I will come up next. It’s a way to look into myself and stretch my capabilities. I understand more about myself when I research and create concepts about clothings. When you study fashion, you must forget current trends and what’s hot now and all the hype around it. It’s all interesting but I really love just to take a cup of tea/coffee/ vine and sit back in my cosy chair and let the ideas just come to me. Over all, it’s just the everyday experience - I have created clothings inspired by train ticket or a interesting building. I love to invent the whole story about behind the garment. It’s a full circle - ideas are bron and I have the joy happy to create them into a collection. Fashion is my great escape from world. I am more myself when drawing and making models of clothes than doing any other things.

NADIA WICKER Série Nuwa Goddesses. I think there is a goddess in each and every woman. Some, sadly lie dormant and undiscovered, yet others seem to burst forth in a kaliedascope of brilliant color. Fiery and passionate, strong yet ethereal. This is what see in Nadia’s work. A beautiful display of the internal made external, Série Nuwa, captures something elusive. A divine spark that resides in us all… waiting to be discovered. - J.W. In her own words “I’m originally from the east of the France, but fell in love with Paris and made it my home. I adore Paris because it’s such a multicultural and living city. She can be a stressful place to be but the energy is so incredible, inspiration can easily be found anywhere you look. It surrounds you.

Fashion inspires me through its colors and textures. As a selftaught photographer, I have developed an insatiable passion for the self-portrait, an art that has become indispensable to me in expressing myself. I try to grow using my head and my body as an artistic medium. My fascination with extravagant dress, painting and movement has led me to create this album of heroines, warriors and chimerical queens. Nuwa is my latest work, a series of imaginary characters, with reference to the creator goddess of the same name, which shaped the first men out of clay and earth. Something elemental.” - Nadia Wicker

REVIEW Get ready to rock. Hedi Slimane bring us “back to the future” with a definite nod to Punk, Rock, and New Wave and the glory days of the 80s. Where CBGB’s in New York was the place to be, dancing to Blondie or bopping to the Ramones. Both the boys and girls collections bring a lot of attitude and a little kitsch. Some bold and some subdued, Saint Laurent reminds us of an era that was a great time to those old enough to remember and presents some great looks to those of us where it’s all brand new.
