You may stop at one of the almost 400 panoramic points and view the Appalachian Highlands' high and steep mountains, farms in lowlands, cascades, and rivers. There are vista points where you can view the region from high points like Chimney Rock, Blowing Rock, and Grandfather Mountain State Park. If rather drive only a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, you can always plan your route according to the exits that connect to the main highways. The Parkway's slower pace would be a much needed respite from highway traffic; the speed limit is 45 mph which is strictly enforced. The Blue Ridge Parkway, stretching 469 miles from Virginia to North Carolina, is the most popular and most beautiful location in America to watch the leaves turn. It is also considered the most favorite route in the country. America's longest linear park runs through between Shenandoah National Park Skyline Drive, with its northern gateway, in CAROLINA Waynesboro, Virginia, to The Great Smoky Mountains, with its southern terminus in Cherokee, North Carolina. The terrrain is mountainous and crosses five significant rivers; James, Roanoke, Linville, French Broad, and Swannanoa. Landscape architects designed this pathway with the sole concept of bringing people together with nature. The Blue Ridge Parkway, stretching through north to south, features different climates and environments with high and steep mountains, lowlands, uplands, rivers and cascades, and harbors over 1400 species of endemic plants wild animals. 64

Vibrant, fiery, warm colors of autumn; goldens, burnt sienna, oranges, reds, violets, purples, and burgundies. And, add various green tones of evergreen trees on top of all of these fascinating colors to the palette. Seeing the reflection of these leaves on the water and fallen ones drifting in the stream. I realize I want to stand still and live in the moment. I breathed in this scenery, this lovely imagery of nature, and said to myself, "I don't want to ever forget feeling so light, peaceful, and happy." The colors of autumn, a festival of colors before nature goes to sleep.

miles, as the traffic volume increases in line with visitors' numbers. When visiting these places, make sure to see the Biltmore Estate near Asheville, North Carolina; from the Estate's wide-open terrace, you can watch the picturesque autumn scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains extending up to the horizon. The Biltmore Estate, considered the largest private home in the United States, was built by George Washington Vanderbilt II over six years from 1889 to 1895. In those years, upper-class families of America were competing with the kings of Europe. The chateau-like Estate, situated on 178,982 square feet, fascinates its visitors with 250 rooms; 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, halls, and dining rooms. The Vanderbilt family opened the doors of their home to the public for the first time in 1930 Christmas, during the Great Depression, to revitalize the region with tourism. The Estate is quite a sight worth seeing with its original decoration, masterpiece works of art, a bowling alley, music room, gymnasium room, with once state-of-the-art fitness equipment and a huge kitchen. And Biltmore Estate was the first building with electricity at the time. As you can imagine, an army of servants were clean and light the fire in fireplaces in a continuous manner. While walking through the mansion's kitchen, I play the imaginative game I engage in from time to time, especially when visiting historical and archeological sites. I wish to make a journey to the past, become invisible, and witness the kitchen staff's intense efforts to serve the banquets and balls to entertain European royalty, supervised by Vanderbilt's French chef. Yes, there were many upscale events, Biltmore was also in the real sense the home of Vanderbilt's. Our guide tells us about the routines of daily life in the Estate and that the children were sliding down the stair rails. The Biltmore Estate is also very famous for its elaborate Christmas decorations; since it takes several months to decorate, they are permanently on display. If you happen to stay in the Biltmore Estate, you will have time to explore the working farm and visit the wine cellars. Fishing, taking a canoe trip down the gentle French Board River, and horseback riding are also popular. The Estate also offers

This journey has to be planned in detail before starting the trip. Most importantly, you must determine where to stay during your trip and decide how many hours you want to drive per day and which activities you want to do while in the park. Do you wish to travel by and stop the car and take breaks along the way from time to time, ride a bicycle for a portion of the trip, explore and discover some of the 100 hiking trails classified in difficulty as moderate to strenuous? You have to make these decisions before starting the trip to experience a pleasant journey. Even if you are not prepared or willing to take a hiking trail, you cannot miss Linville Falls. These scenic waterfalls flowing down the steep rocks are beautiful; it's a short, pleasant walk.

One of my favorite things during this time of year is seeing trees that have changed color only on one side. This tends to happen when the leaves that are exposed to the sun turn quicker while the other half is still green. It's such a lovely gradient scale and passage of colors. Even if you may have lived through many autumns, you get fascinated like you have seen it for the first time.

After the Biltmore estate, we're back on the Parkway, click on the "foliage update" included on the park's webpage to find out the best time to observe the peak foliage; thus, you can plan your trip accordingly. I recommend you bring along a back-up battery for your camera since you will encounter many beautiful things and splendid views worth shooting.

Markers erected in scenic viewpoints called "overlooks" contain information about the region or characteristic people in the area. One of these was about the life of Orleana Puckett. She decided to become a mid-wife after tragically losing 24 children herself. She's said to have delivered thousands of babies during her tenure from age 50 to 102.

We saw six white-tailed deer in different places since we visited the park when the deer season had started, and fortunately, we only had one small encounter on the road that caused a bit of excitement. You can have lunch at Little Switzerland, Mabry Mill, Peaks of Otter Lodge, and the Orchard at Altapass restaurants. In Peaks of Otter, you can also attend a wine tasting tour.
This dining room is one of the many in the Biltmore Estate.
If you want to camp out, you may stay in bungalows located in Peaks of Otter or Mountain Pisgah Parks. In Orchard at Altapass, throughout lunch, you'll hear the authentic mountain music of the region, called "The Sound of the Blue Ridge Mountains," played by the banjo, violin, and guitar trio of the area. Here you also have the opportunity to go fruit picking to the nearby apple orchards.
The Biltmore Estate is also famous for its Christmas decorations.
Many exotic plants are still grown in the greenhouse located close to the chateau.

Another place to stay in the vicinity is Hendersonville; it is a lovely, small town. If you prefer to stay there in a typical historical building, I recommend you Waverly Inn with its warm and cozy atmosphere and antique decoration. Keep in mind to visit the Mast General Store. Highland Lake & Resort is also a lovely place to stay in the neighborhood of Hendersonville- Flatrock region. It is located close to Lake Lure and has an upscale restaurant.

If you plan to drive the entire Blue Ridge Parkway from its southern gateway to the northern terminus like us, I recommend having some of your meals in a picnicstyle. This way, you can stop to take a breath, listen to the silence of the forest, and you will save time too. Don't keep your expectations high for most of these restaurants, and note that you'd have to wait in line during peak season. I suggest packing a cooler to your liking as markets and good restaurants are few and far between. Gourmet meal discoveries are for another time; on this trip, we concentrate on nourishing our souls.

During this long ride, you might need to dress up in layers. You will ascend to high altitudes from time to time, which results in temperature differences between the northern and southern parts of the parkway. Sudden changes in weather conditions at high mountains should be considered as well; it's wise to follow up on the weather forecast a few times a day. Wear comfortable shoes for driving and outdoor activities. Also, thin raincoats with hoods are very handy. We set off on our journey through the Blue Ridge Parkway from the southern gateway. To provide an insight of our trip in terms of timing, I'd like to touch on the highlights of our itinerary. We stayed for two nights in Hendersonville, and thus we had the opportunity to travel around and visit Hendersonville, Ashville, and Biltmore. In Biltmore, we were only able to see the Estate and the conservatory without attending guided tours. Then, we bid farewell to civilization and entered the parkway to be alone with nature. We walked up the path to Linville Falls, where we took in the lovely cascades. Almost at every scenic viewpoint, we stopped and took many photos. Some of the visitor centers were an excellent source to get information about each region's history, lifestyle, and folk art—and we had short breaks for lunch. We stayed one night at Banner Elk and spent our last night at Galax; both towns were convenient in terms of location and saving time. The first two days, while driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, the weather was beautiful with crystal-clear views, and we took photos until our index fingers were sore, mesmerized with nature's beauty. Thankfully we had taken so many as the fog rolled in on our last day. We could hardly see the road when driving and had to return to the hotel much earlier than planned. A picture is worth a thousand words, but I wish you could smell the pleasant scent of the forest, listen to the wind rustling through the leaves, and watch fallen leaves gently drift down stream.
