Richard G. Wheeler Steps Down as Board Chairman This year’s upcoming graduation will be a milestone for Farragut’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Admiral Richard G. Wheeler, who at that time will complete thirtyfive years of service to the academy. During these years the admiral has served in a number of positions, from four years as a classroom teacher of English and advisor to the yearbook and newspaper, to ten years as Headmaster, to two years as Financial Coordinator and Development Officer. Then, when the Office of the Superintendent was established in 1990, the then Captain Wheeler served as Vice-Superintendent and member of the board of both the Pine Beach and St. Petersburg campuses. He was subsequently designated as Superintendent and President of the Board of Trustees of the Southern campus in 1994. In 1995, Captain Wheeler was honored when the Board of Trustees voted for the first ever Farragut rank of Rear Admiral be awarded to him. After a few years Admiral Wheeler recommended that the Office of Superintendent be eliminated, and the operation of the school be placed again in the hands of the Headmaster. In the over thirty years under his direction, Admiral Farragut Academy has witnessed many changes to include the affects of the devastating losses to the Admiral Farragut Academy schools when the Pine Beach campus closed. But under his leadership and through the cooperation of the Board of Trustees and a strict management of a severely limited budget, the southern campus survived and prospered. In development and alumni affairs he worked to bring both north and south Farragut alumni groups into a single unit. Through careful planning, he pushed to admit girls

into the academy. This was accomplished smoothly in 1990. Then, in 1998 with his encouragement, the present Lower Division of kindergarten through fifth grade was opened. As Admiral Wheeler states, the myriad of decisions that have been made over the years involving the Farragut staff, the local community, city and state government, and accrediting agencies, have helped to make Admiral Farragut Academy one of the nations’ prime navy military and academic prep schools. National and Internationally known guest speakers have honored Farragut at graduation exercises over the years to include alumni astronaut/moonwalkers Charlie Duke ‘53S and Alan Shepard ‘41N, US Congressman Bill Young, presidential candidate and astronaut John Glenn, and Nobel Prize candidate, Irish rock star, Bob Geldof of Live Aid fame. Admiral Wheeler is quick to point out that Farragut would not have survived and developed into the premier school that it is today without the help of Louisa, his wife of 55 years, and that of his long time mentors, the late Captains Orie T. “Banks and Earl Clark. He also praises the courage, devotion, determination, and dedication of long-serving Board members, Claudia Sokolowski, alumnus Rt. Rev. Laurence Upham ‘53, and Tom Harris who helped direct the Southern Campus through the turmoil’s of the North Campus closing and helped the financial crisis and restructuring that followed. Also, he points to the support of the Farragut Foundation founded by alumnus George Michel

‘49, and other key alumni and contributors, such as the Alumni Group, The Parents Group, and the present Headmaster, Captain Bob Fine. Thirty-five years at Admiral Farragut would seem to many to be a single and illustrious career, but for those who might not know, this is Admiral Wheeler’s second career after a first and varied career in the US military service. Richard G. Wheeler was born on Christmas Day in 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri to Vaudeville band musician, Harry, and a Swedish immigrant mother Esther. As Wheeler remembers, “My neighborhood was a friendly mixture of French, German, Swedish, Norwegian families where many religions intermingled with understanding and compassion. As youngsters during the Great Depression, my friends and I never knew that we were poor, because our parents never told us or complained in front of us. It was a time when our young imaginations soared as we listened to ‘The Shadow’ on radio, read books, and believed that the atom could never be split and that man would never walk on the moon. We felt safe and secure when we walked to school.” But then things changed in 1941 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the US went to war. Wheeler graduated from Westport High School in Kansas City, Missouri in 1945, after four long years of anxiously waiting for his parents to give him permission to join his older brother in Europe fighting in WWII. The waiting was somewhat lightened by courses in high school Junior ROTC, and work towards an Eagle Scout Badge which was awarded in 1944. Contrary to his Army JROTC training, he joined the US Navy instead, just in time to be classified as a veteran of WWII after discharge. He served for two years as a Fireman First Class in the engine room of the USS Chemung, a Navy tanker that moved oil and aviation fuel throughout the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and to the Red Sea and Saudi Arabia. After his enlistment was complete, he attended the University of Missouri on the GI Bill of Rights and enrolled in the Army ROTC. He received his Bachelors degree in History and Sociology and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Artillery in 1950, just in time for active duty during the Korean Conflict. There, he served with the 555th Field Artillery Battalion as a Forward Observer attached to the 5th Infantry Regimental Combat Team. In between college and artillery school, he managed to woo and marry Louisa Hardy, a young British girl just arrived from England who had lived through the evacuation of children from London in 1939, only to return to the East –end of London to be a part of, and to survive the bombing “Blitz” of London by the German bombers during WWII. When First Lieutenant Wheeler returning to the US in 1952 with three battle stars on his Korean service badge, he moved with his wife and newborn son to Camp Chaffee, Arkansas as an artillery battery commander, and subsequently to Oklahoma, Texas, and then Germany in various artillery commands. In 1960, he, Louisa, and their three boys were transferred to St. Louis, Missouri, where he was appointed Assistant Professor of Military Science at Washington University. By 1965, Wheeler was a US Army Major and had earned a Master of Arts Degree in Education, but prior to completing his work towards a doctorate he volunteered for service in Vietnam when the Communist north invaded the South. There, he was assigned as Division Artillery Advisor to the 5th ARVN Division in the Delta Region of Vietnam. After 32 combat

operations, he returned home with a Bronze star, a Purple Heart for wounds, an Air Medal with 3 stars, an Air Force Commendation Medal, two Vietnamese Army gallantry combat medals, and a promotion to Lt. Colonel. Upon his return to the states, Colonel Wheeler and his family served at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and later on Okinawa as Information Officer until he retired at Ft. Sill Oklahoma in 1969 after twenty years in the US Army and two years in the US Navy. In Oklahoma, he taught high school Psychology and Journalism and was newspaper advisor until moving to Florida in 1971.—Where he and Louisa Wheeler began their second life career of thirty-five years with the Admiral Farragut Academy family—He as a staff member and she as a volunteer and confidant. All of us at Admiral Farragut Academy are grateful to Admiral Wheeler for his steady hand at the helm which safely guided AFA past many “torpedoes” on its way to the new 21st Century. Though he is retiring as Board Chairman he will remain available for counsel to the school for many years to come. He has our gratitude for the manner he guided the AFA Ship of State through the last days of the 20th Century so our Mission will continue to shower its benefits throughout the coming decades. We all wish him smooth sailing in the years ahead!

God Speed, Richard G. Wheeler! The Dedication of the “Wheeler Lower Division” The Lower Division was dedicated November 3, 2000 to Richard and Louisa Wheeler. Admiral Wheeler and Mrs. Wheeler have labored extensively promoting a full-range academic program which includes a Lower Division as its starting point. Through their efforts the opening of the program for young preelementary and elementary children was brought to fruition. Louisa has been a constant and supportive member of the “Wheeler Team”. On this day their own grand-daughter, Julie, was included as a member of the lower division student body. The events of the day were carried throughout the Bay area by Radio Talk Show personality John Cipos who broadcasted the dedication on his AM/FM program.

Premiere Builder, Paco Jordan ‘55 Visits AFA We had a nice visit with Paco Jordan on Friday, March 02, 2007. Paco was in Tampa attending the Luis Palau Festival on March 2 thru March 4. Luis Palau is the famous Latin American religious minister. We picked Paco up at the Hyatt Grand Hotel in Tampa and brought him for his first visit to AFA here in Saint Petersburg. Paco’s visit was to learn about our plans to build the new Alumni Center/ Museum. Paco has requested that we send him a set of blue prints when they are ready. He thinks our plans for the new Alumni Center/Museum are excellent. He said that he has a lot of places he supports and wasn’t sure how AFA would fit in with those programs. I mentioned that money was just spiritual energy, and we were all caretakers of our planet. We welcome his support in any way that he sees fit. It was serendipity that Paco and I are fellow alumni at the University level. Paco graduated from the University of Florida. He originally had planned to become an architect and had attended UF because of its great School of Architecture. Paco met with our architect, Peter Haseloff and discussed the Alumni Center/Museum project with him. He said, “I discovered that while I could master all of the other elements that were required of an architect, I simply could not draw.” So instead he pursued a course leading to becoming a contractor. And contractor he is, Paco is one of the premiere contractors in the world today. Coincidentally, Peter Haseloff is also a graduate of the University of Florida and its College of Architecture. Paco told us he was impressed with the plans for the new building, and our architect. A week after his visit we received a pledge of $10,000 from Paco for the Alumni Center/Museum. We are very grateful for his pledge and we hope that it will encourage others to give to this important and worthwhile program.

Admiral Farragut Academy Band Coming to Mobile for Mardi Gras

Wednesday, February 07, 2007 By GEORGE WERNETH, Staff Reporter for the Mobile Press Register

To heck with the torpedoes: The Admiral Farragut Academy's band and color guard are coming full speed ahead from their school's St. Petersburg, Fla., home to participate in Mobile's Mardi Gras. The private school, named after Adm. David Farragut, the commander of Union naval forces at the Aug. 5, 1864, Battle of Mobile Bay. Following the sinking of the USS Tecumseh by Confederate mines, Farragut is renowned for the line, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" Thirty-two members of the Farragut band and color guard will take part in the Knights of Mobile parade on February 17th. Nancy Behan, a school spokeswoman, said Tuesday, in an interview from her office, “This will be the school's first participation in Mobile's Mardi Gras. Behan said that Fluffy Cazalas, a Mobile native who has a daughter in the band, came up with the idea of the band and color guard joining the city's Carnival celebration. Cazalas, in a recent interview with the Press-Register, said she moved to St. Petersburg in 2000. She said her daughter, Rebekkah, an 11th grader who is assistant band commander, formerly attended St. Paul's Episcopal School in Mobile. Cazalas said she pitched the Mobile parade idea to school officials and, "They found the opportunity quite exciting -- especially with the school's namesake having a history in the Mobile area." She said school officials saw the visit as "an opportunity for the cadets to learn more about Admiral David Farragut." During the famous battle, Farragut led the way on his flagship through the minefield near the mouth of Mobile Bay, followed by the rest of his fleet. The Union ships successfully passed into the bay while under Confederate fire from land and water. The 18-ship Union fleet defeated the Confederate force of four ships, gaining a victory that provided an important morale boost for the North and played a role in the re-election of Abraham Lincoln that fall. Cazalas said the St. Petersburg academy's band director, has been enthusiastic about the visit to Mobile, and was involved in contacting officials with the Mobile Carnival Association. Cazalas said the band and color guard, as well as parent and school escorts, will come to Mobile Feb. 15 and will tour Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island after spending the night on the island. She said they will eat at several well-known Mobile area restaurants and will perform on board the USS Alabama at Battleship Memorial Park at 2 p.m. on Feb. 16. Behan said the school of some 400 students, opened as a second campus in St. Petersburg, Fla. in 1945 by an act of Congress and is presently a co-educational, boarding, and day college preparatory school serving pre-kindergarten through the twelfth grade. FOLLOW-UP The AFA Band was named the “Most Outstanding Band of the Parade” and has been invited back to lead off the annual Mardi Gras Parade every year. Congratulations to everyone for an outstanding job representing Admiral Farragut Academy.

Alumni Gathering planned for MOBILE MARDI GRAS in 2008 We had a rather exciting turn-out to see the Band perform in the Mobile Mardi Gras Parade. There are many AFA Alumni who are members of the Crewe’s that put on the parade each year. We thought it would be a great opportunity for an Alumni Gathering. We could have lunch aboard the USS Alabama. We’re planning to hold our Gathering on Friday, February 1, 2008 at 1200 hours. We will be dining in the Wardroom (Officer Mess Hall) onboard the USS Alabama, located at 2703 Battleship Parkway, Mobile, AL. Cadets in attendance will include current members of the AFA Band, Color Guard and an eight member drill team. The menu will be as follows: Roast Beef with Gravy, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Veggie Medley, Garden Salad with Dressings, Dinner Rolls, Banana Pudding, Tea Cost is $15.00 per person and please notify us as soon as possible if there are any special dietary requests so that we can try to accommodate everyone. We will need RSVP's but will be only be able to accept RSVP through the end of the year. (December 31, 2007 will be the cutoff date for reservations). One of our AFA Parents, Fluffy Cazalas has offered to help any alumni with their hotel arrangements. Most of the hotels in downtown Mobile are already sold out (they start booking for next year the day after Mardi Gras ends, so many sold out last week). Parents who decided in December/January to travel to see the kids in the parade this year found the nearest hotels to be in Biloxi, MS - so I strongly recommend booking early for anyone thinking of going. Please contact Fluffy at her email address fluffy@websitedesign.org.

April 2007

Dear Alumni, As current Blue Jackets, we are proud to be part of the drive to make AFA one of the Nation’s top schools. Our days are spent learning from some of the most talented faculty ever gathered. We are getting hands-on experience with state-of-the-art new technologies in our classrooms. In just a few months we will be graduating and will become the newest members of the AFA Alumni Association. It is with this in mind that we ask you to reminisce about your days at AFA. We’re sure that you will remember just how much the days you spent acquiring an education at Farragut has meant to you, your families, and our world. We are proud that so many of our graduates have contributed so much to our world. How many schools can boast two of their graduates have actually walked on the Moon? This event came into sharp focus on May 8, 2006 when NASA named Apollo 16 Astronaut Charles M. Duke, Jr. ‘53, Ambassador of Exploration and presented to him a lunar sample which he has given to Admiral Farragut Academy. Ours is the only high school in the world with a Lunar Sample. On the path to reaching our goal of becoming one of the nation’s top schools, there is still work to be done. We need the support of all of our Alumni to help us attract today’s brightest students and faculty. To compete in this academic theatre of excellence we must continue to improve our facilities and technology. Our first undertaking is the commitment to build a new Alumni Center/Museum facility to serve as a gathering place for visiting Alumni and as a repository for our unique, historical treasures. The relocation of this facility will allow us a footprint for new academic buildings. Through your generous financial support for the Academy, you will become significant partners in helping us achieve our goals. Your support will become the difference in building AFA into a stronger academy whose future goals might well include the exploration of our solar system in the coming decades. We look forward to your joining us on the road to the top! Very sincerely yours, CDR Zack Allen, Battalion Commander LCDR Jonathan James Gardner, Executive Officer LCDR Konstantin Drabkin, Operations Officer LCDR William Augustus Saunders III, Adjutant 2006-07 Battalion Staff

Ways to Give to Admiral Farragut Academy

Page 7

Planning Your Charitable Giving by Linda Truslow, CFRE With this new and regular column in the Reveille, our Development Department will be bringing information to help Farragut Alumni make decisions about the kind of gift planning that’s right for their individual situations.

I’m thrilled to be part of the Reveille From discussions on charitable annuities and gifts of insurance policies to a simple, “How shall I fill out this check?” I have spoken with many of you concerning the variety of ways one may “give back” to your school. Within this column, we’ll be sharing a wide variety of opportunities, giving programs and estate planning, along with the possible benefits they may bring to you. This month I’d like to share an opportunity that may not be available after December of 2007. Outright Gifts from IRA Accounts Legislation involving outright gifts from IRA accounts has recently passed and will only be available through December of 2007. Three Questions for You 1. Do you want to make an outright gift to Admiral Farragut Academy? 2. Are a lot of your assets tied up in an IRA? 3. Are you, or will you be, at least 70½ years old in 2007? If you answered yes to all three questions, thanks to the recently-enacted Pension Protection Act of 2006, you can make an outright gift from your IRA account to Admiral Farragut Academy in amounts up to $100,000, without paying any income tax on the withdrawal. This is a history-making event, but the opportunity expires at the end of 2007, so time is of the essence. One important point: because the funds transferred from your IRA are not subject to income tax upon withdrawal, there is no charitable deduction allowed. Even so, a close look at the numbers suggests that almost everyone who qualifies is a winner. Though currently permitted only in 2006 and 2007, the IRA rollovers could become much more widely used if a bill to make them permanent becomes law. Legislators are working to pass a permanent law, currently titled, “The Public Good IRA Rollover Act of 2007.” Provisions found in this bill include the removal of the $100,000 annual limit on donations and lowering the minimum age for participation to start at age 59½. For more specific information about using this opportunity for gift planning in your individual situation, it is best to contact your financial advisor or a qualified tax professional.

The AFA Development office is always happy to answer your questions about making any gift to the Academy, and we are available to work with your financial advisor to help meet your personal charitable goals. “Ways to Give” is designed to be an interactive column and your suggestions, experiences and personal input is wholeheartedly encouraged. As tax opportunities may change with some frequency, be sure to check back often for updates and new information. We always enjoy speaking with Farragut alumni about any topic, and look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your interest and your wonderful support of your alma mater, Admiral Farragut Academy.

DIAGNOSE YOUR OWN SITUATION Do you have a large IRA account? This is a great opportunity to make a charitable gift without incurring additional income tax. Are you unable to itemize your deductions for income tax purposes? By taking advantage of the IRA provision, you can transfer funds directly from your IRA to a charity such as Admiral Farragut Academy with no income tax liability, thus eliminating the taxes you would otherwise pay. Is the required Minimum Distribution from your IRA more income than you currently need? Consider transferring the remaining distribution to charity. Why? You can still meet your Minimum Distribution Requirement by taking only the portion of the distribution you need for income, and then transferring the remainder of the distribution to your charity. Have you made a lot of charitable gifts this year and have bumped into the 50% ceiling in your adjusted gross income? You can now make gifts directly from your IRA that will not be subject to this limitation and won't be taxed as a distribution

While general information will always be as accurate as possible, this column is meant to advise you of possibilities. As always, specific questions regarding your individual gifts and tax liabilities are best answered by your financial advisor or tax professional.

CLASS NEWS

LT Col Richard B. Libbey, USAF (Ret) ’36 – We received a very nice letter from Richard. He requested that we send him a list of his classmates. He sent us a contribution for the new Alumni Center/Museum. I would like to quote from his letter. He said, “Thank you so much for sending me the January 2007 copy of “Reveille”. It arrived at an auspicious time as my family was celebrating my 90th birthday.” (By the way, his birthday was February, 1917)! He expressed an interest in James W. Herring ’38, who was written about in the January edition. He said, “I remember, we tried out together for football on that clay hard, pebbly field but did not make the team!” Richard and his wife, Wilma have, “As of last month, 11 grand children, from ages one month to 7 years!” He is living in Irvington, VA. Robert Kieran ’40 – Bob and his lovely wife, Alice visited with us recently. We received a very nice email from Bob which read: “We received your pictures, thank you so much. We really appreciate all the time that you spent with us on our visit. We cannot tell you how much we enjoyed the day. The school is moving on with great progress and I am sure that this is due to your input, we could see how much you love this school and your interest in seeing it grow and improve. We were impressed with the friendly staff and all the people that we met. This brought back many fond memories. I have looked forward to visiting the school for quite some time. Just kept putting it off, so glad that I finally made it. Thanks again for a wonderful day. You can contact Bob at his email address: ajkieran@charter.net.

John D. Schenone ’40 – John was a Band member in Tom’s River. John expressed sadness about the news of the passing of CDR Tom Bush ’40, his classmate. They were good pen pals. You can reach John at his email address: bigjds@bellsouth.net. CDR Douglas R. Cavileer ’43 USN (Ret) – Doug and his wife, Grace are living in Manassas, VA. In addition to his retirement as a Naval Aviator, he also retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. He and Grace have two children, Sharon Cavileer and Douglas R. Cavileer, Jr.; four grandchildren, Jessica Kilgore, Rachel Pullin, Madeline Cavileer, and Jesse Cavileer. Jessica Kilgore recently was married on the Island of St. Lucia with the entire family in attendance. You can reach Douglas at his email address: vacavileer@aol.com. Graham W. Leonard ’43 – We got a nice email from Graham. It was addressed to Frank (Wendt) and other Alumni of ’42-’44. He said, “Since leaving the Naval Academy in 1946, I have had almost no contact with fellow AFA alumni. Only once I contacted Frank Keebler ’43 and saw Stump and Christy Walker until the late 40’s. I would like to know if Bob Balaban, Leon Mandel III, and Davis Rickenbacker are still around?” (Graham, William Balaban is alive and living in Roanoke, VA; Leon Mandel has been unknown in our records for some time. Wish we could find him; David Rickenbacker is listed as deceased, no date given.) Graham goes on to tell us what he has been doing for the last 35 years or so. “My life has been mostly in the Middle East as an educator (PhD Harvard). I will return March 10th for 10 weeks in Jordan, Ramallah, Syria and Lebanon where I am promoting the revival of discussion based education. Two years ago this time, I spent two months in Iraq—three weeks with the Christian Peacemaker Teams in Baghdad and Kerbala and then five weeks with the 2/278th National Guard, the Tennessee Peacemakers. They are from my home district where I was a Democratic Candidate for Congress in 2004—in an area 85% Republican. I got 30%, the highest of any Democrat in a century! I was embedded as a journalist with the 2/287th—The Tennessee Peacemakers. Though against this war I will go back with them for their full time if the 2/278th is recalled to Iraq— even Baghdad—or especially as they will need to understand far more there. I speak fluent Arabic. My two daughters are approaching 50, but I only have one grandchild—Alexander 6’5”, in his next to last year in London School of Economics. I now live outside Washington in Frederick, Maryland, but will lecture at East TN State University in 2008—build on my great-grandfather’s farm. (I) visited AFA in St. Pete once, during their vacation so (I) saw only the plant. Like Toms River better! What is left of the buildings there? This is more than anyone wants to know!” You can contact Graham at his email address: gl71626@yahoo.com . CDR Samuel B. Mark T. Lewis ’45 – Mark sent us a DVD copy of the Admiral Farragut Graduation in Toms River, NJ in 1945. He said, “It is unedited, just as my mother used the 16mm camera. I hope that it is useful even though taken at a distance from the Stadium stands. The old Packard, vintage 1936 or 1937 also comes into view. It was driven by the old Marine Corps Brigadier General, Cyrus S. Radford, USMC (Ret) who lived on campus.” Mark is living in Pittsburgh, PA. You can reach him at his email address: mlewis@rlmillerinc.com. Roger C. Allen ’47 - We received a very nice letter from Roger. It read, “This is my first communication with the Academy since my graduation in 1947. Although I was misguided by the Headmaster, who wanted me to attend a school in pursuit of an Engineering degree, my life has been far more rewarding than he might have anticipated. Although I wanted to be a traveler and explorer, I have traveled around the world twice, lived abroad and have been in the company of royalty. On completion of my B.A. degree and NROTC training at the University of Colorado in 1952, I served on a minesweeper during the Korean Conflict. Later my collateral duty aboard the U.S.S. Hornet, aircraft carrier was to serve as the ship’s entertainment officer. In 1956, I received my M.A. degree in speech and drama at the University of Wisconsin. I taught communication skills for one year at Syracuse University and four years at the University of Michigan while pursuing doctoral studies in Radio-TV and Oral Interpretation. I also attended Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. A few years later I lived in Pago-Pago, when I trained Samoans to teach in their village schools. Next I taught speech and radio-TV courses at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Then, I moved to Tacoma, Washington where I was a PBS-TV producer. I remained there for 23 years, I produced more than a 1000 community programs, received an “Emmy”, and also was the original producer of “The Frugal Gourmet.” I served on the Board of Governors of the Seattle Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences four years. Since my retirement at age 60, I served as a VISTA volunteer for literacy in Arizona, served with the PEACE Corps in Africa and with AmeriCorps in Oregon and Washington states, was a Mentoring Coordinator at the local Job Corps Center in Tucson and taught English as a Second Language at Chicanos Por La Causa. I now reside in Tucson where I am now the Director of The Desert Readers which I founded in July 2005. Since then we have performed 110 times at assisted living, health care facilities, and retirement communities in the greater Tucson area. This unique volunteer outreach community service program composed mostly of seniors, reads aloud uplifting, lighthearted, selections, jokes, and short stories and includes sing-a-longs and also music in order to provide a joyful, positive, fulfilling experience for the elderly. Sincerely, Roger C. Allen.” You can contact Roger at his email address: rogmarallen@cox.net Howard Sakolsky ’47 - Howard is on a campaign to get all of the members of the class of ’47 to attend their 60th class reunion this November 2nd and 3rd. He has sent out letters to everyone and has been busily locating classmates who have fallen through the cracks for want of sending in address change update. (Howard said, I am living full time in a motor coach and traveling the country, however, I settled in Luling, Texas for this winter and will be on my way to Los Angeles and then north to visit Jay Sondheim ’47 and then up to Oregon, Northern Utah, Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota ending up in New Hampshire early in August. I will be at the AFA Homecoming for sure.) We recently spent over an hour on long distance updating those he has found. Howard is a driving force to make the 60th reunion for his classmates an event to remember. He could use any help you can give, as recently he has had to undergo some serious physical rehabilitation. He is presently in Texas and is still getting rehab. He plans to take and indirect route back up to New Hampshire and Maine as soon as he is able. You can reach Howard at his email address: yankee_cowboy@yahoo.com. Norman E. Siegel ’47 – Norman sent us an update for his home and email address. Norm is planning to attend Homecoming this fall. John and Janet have become Plank Owners for the new Alumni Center/Museum. He also helped promote some needed help for the Band. He sent us a Video about John Philip Sousa for the enjoyment and education of our Band program. John is a supporter of AFA in many ways, including his attendance at our events. He is always using his positive approach to further the needs and wants of the Academy. Here is a reprint of a email message that John sent to Gunny Sgt. Cruz, “GREAT PARADE, Gunny! The USS New York, created entirely from steel taken from the World Trade Center salvage after 9/11. Armando said, “I am glad you liked the picture. Did you notice that it was sent to me by John Hedrick's widow? As far as this year's Homecoming, frankly speaking, I had not thought about it yet. Would like to, but don't know yet. RT. REV. Laurence B. Upham ‘53— was elevated to the order of Bishop in the Old Catholic Church in a Consecration Mass in Clearwater, FL on September 30th 2006. The Consecrators were, Most Rev. Michael McKay, OCM and Most Rev. Rodney Rickard, OCM. For the past two years Bishop Larry has served as Chaplain to the Cadets and Staff here at Admiral Farragut Academy and maintains an Office on Campus. For many years, the Academy lacked the services of a Chaplain. Bishop Larry attended Farragut from 1948 to 1953. When asked why this ministry? He said, “The answer is simple. Farragut gave me so much in my early years, I want to give back in some measure. God has blessed me in my life, I hope I can share his blessings with our Youth here at Farragut.” You can reach Bishop Larry at his email address: lupham@farragut.org.

Conway B. Hiden ‘54— We have been communicating with Conway. He has been having some personal health problems but maintains a very positive attitude about getting past them soon. Conway sent us a nice letter. Conway sent us an article that was published in the AFA North school newspaper. It had a headline...Hiden Collection Is Donated To Library...the article says, “Cadet Hiden has generously donated to the school Library a variety of military souvenirs. The display is part of an extensive collection of military equipment which Cadet Hiden has gathered over a period of three years. The newly-constructed, well-lighted showcase in the Library contains an unusually valuable collection of relics.” Conway’s letter goes on to say, “I would be greatly disappointed if none of this wound up at Farragut South.” We are sad to have to report that it someway didn’t make it. From time to time, an alumni from the North asks about items that had been in the AFA North Museum. Conway said, Farragut had a good tradition behind it and I hope that it can continue into the future. I receive more response from Farragut than I do from my college, Hobart. Hobart “drops you” from their mailings if they don’t see or hear from you. Not the way to go.” He goes on to say, “When thinking of astronauts we have to remember that former Farragut cadet who was the first man to ride a rocket into space actually kicked off the American space program, Alan Shepard ‘41. I was at AFA North when they dedicated a building in his honor. His wife was there in his place. I had a chance to meet her and she was a delightful Lady. I have never met a Farragut graduate that I didn’t like although I have lost track of some of them. It was an honor to be a part of that scene and one I will always remember. When I am running “up to snuff,” I will do my best to get over to St. Petersburg and visit the campus. Maybe by that time the new Alumni Center/Museum will be completed. In any event I will keep you posted and let you know when I am coming. Nice speaking with you, I am Conway B. Hiden.” (Thanks Conway! We’re looking forward to that visit. I also hope that the new Alumni Center/Museum will soon have its ground-breaking ceremony. It should take about 9 months from the time of the ground-breaking until we move in. You will be an honored guest!) Capt. David B. Gibson ’54 USN (Ret) – David and his wife, Twyla has just returned from a fabulous trip to the Amazon River basin. Here is what Dave had to say. “Hello all : just finished Amazon jungle part of our trip - fantastic. Got super photos of: tapir (up close), orange bellied piranha (with many teeth), two and three toed sloths, boa constrictor, and an eight foot anaconda, colorful parrots. Visited native villages along the Amazon - showed blow gun expertise, several monkeys etc... Took many boat trips on the Amazon and several of its tributaries. This entire land trip prior to the cruise ship out of Lima was very, very physically strenuous. Currently in Iquitos, Peru waiting a few more hours for our flight back to Lima for the overnight. Board Regal Princes in the morning for well deserved rest, eating, and just being spoiled rotten - that is if we find the ship waiting at the dock as it should be. Hope they fixed the bottom where they ran aground a couple of weeks ago. Met a very nice young Russian couple at the jungle hotel. Lots of jokes about the “Ruskies,” but they say they like capitalism now. Going to be a good trick to exchange emails with them. At first I asked him if he was KBG and he seriously said no, and then I said I was not CIA - all laughed then. He seemed to be a new rich Russian, but a very nice couple indeed. I think I get free internet on the ship so I may try one more email from there - eat, drink and be merry here we come. Dave and Twyla” You can reach Dave at his email address: CAPTN8@aol.com. Donald C. King ’55 - Donald sent us an update via fax. He recently moved from North Carolina to Las Vegas, NV. He sent along a picture of himself in a New York Yankee uniform. Fred Miller, III MD ’56 – After graduation Fred went to the University of Kentucky for his Bachelor of Science degree, and then on to the University of Tennessee for his MD degree in the class of ’64. Fred did a tour of duty in the US Navy (Vietnam, one year, Jacksonville Naval Air Station, 2nd year), then surgery residency at Tampa General Hospital until 1968. He then went back into Orthopedic Residency with the US Army and finished in 1971. He remained in private practice (Orthopedic Surgery) in Venice, Florida until 2004. He tried to retire, but says he got bored and pans to start back with the Tampa VA Hospital in Orthopedics with returning vets. Fred started a new family (second one) in 1995 and has a wife Angela, two children, Spencer 11, and Amanda 10. Jim’s father lives in Sarasota, Florida and he stops by for an AFA visit when he’s in Florida visiting with his Dad. He and Linda visited us in the Museum and then took some time to visit the Moon Rock Exhibit, the Courtyard, the Hubble Telescope Exhibit, and the Mess Hall. Linda is an avid astronomer and was very impressed by the Hubble Pictures. Jim commented about the school. He said, “AFA is prospering, Campus is clean and well-maintained. Keep us the good work!” You can reach Jim at his email address: jandlbeck@comcast.net. Robert R. Kurz, CDR USN (Ret.) ’63 - We received an email update from CDR Kurz. He has had a very interesting time since graduating from AFA. Recently, the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) recognized Bob as one of fewer than 50 individuals world-wide to have achieved the "Billfish Royal Slam" by virtue of catching all nine species of billfish. He completed this feat after 36 years, in September 2006, when he caught a White Marlin in Venezuela. Bob also holds the current men's world record for an 83 pound Pacific Big Eye Tuna which he caught on 8 pound test line in 1990. Bob is now retired and spends most of his free time on his boat "The Last One", and with his college sweetheart, the former Sally M. Linet. Last summer, Bob, Sally and his mother-inlaw, Dee, visited with one of Bob's old classmates, Pete Boyce '62N, in Bar Harbor, Maine. Bob and his family were on a New England/Canadian Cruise and Pete drove down from his home in Lubec, Maine to meet the ship. Pete is also retired and spends much of his time on the water with his new boat. For those who know Pete, it should come as no surprise that he built it himself. It was great to see my dear friend and AFA's former dock master again. And yes, he still drinks lots of coffee! You can contact Bob at his email address: rkurz@hotmail.com. Richard D. Lightbourn ‘63— Richard sent us an update along with his check to become a Plank Owner of the new Alumni Center/ Museum. Richard’s letter read as follows: “Thank you for your e-mail of 11/30/06 and the attached class information. As discussed with Gen. Flanagan, I am interested in helping with the proposed Alumni Center/Museum. Enclosed, please find my check#800 dated 12/29/06 in the amount of $1,000.00. Needless to say, it has been a long time since June 1963. I was part of a small, select group of cadets who did not ‘Officially’ graduate that long ago day in ’63. Why? - We were in the custody of our parents at a pre-graduation celebration the night before—did consume adult beverages and did report in late from liberty. Oh Silly Us! - To think that our mere parents could protect us from the wrath of Capt. Clarke and Cdr. Steele. Of such things memories are made and little did we realize how many more important and significant things were to happen over the next 43 years. L.A.F. In December of 2001 we left Bermuda and relocated to Williamsport, PA where we have spent the past 5 years renovating and restoring Liz’s grandfathers home (1936) and for the most part enjoying every minute of it. I went to Woodstock, became a hippy, and protested the war. I got a BA in Psychology. I built my own house on some wooded land outside Gainesville. I traveled Europe on a BSA 650 motorcycle and lived in a kibbutz for 6 weeks. I went to Chiropractic College, got certified in home birth, and helped deliver about 50 babies as a “midwife”. This was my highest honor. I got spiritual, got married, practiced Chiropractic, hiked the Himalayas; had a son; got divorced; tried a second wife; got a second divorce; got depressed; retired; now living in Portland, OR where I see my 21 year old son for dinner 2x a month. It was his first for some time. I’m including a picture so his classmates can see how thirty-seven years have dealt with him. We had a nice visit and he sent me the following update to pass along to his AFA classmates and friends: “Dear Bill: I was a pleasure to meet you last week at the AFA Alumni Office. My various experiences at Farragut during the late 1960's were not highly valued; however, as I reflect back to almost forty years ago while I was attending the Academy, the coveted characteristic that has meant most to me in my law enforcement career has been "leadership". The leadership traits that I am mentioning include, for example, taking responsibility for things that go wrong to developing younger officers for command level positions. In 2002 I attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Leadership Fellowship Program at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. I lived at the Marine Corps Base at Quantico, VA and served as an instructor, coach and mentor too many National Academy (N/A) students from around the world. During this fellowship program, I had an assignment to the International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, Hungary. The purpose of this assignment was to instruct police officers from former Communist (Eastern Bloc) countries the principles of criminology and tactics. Returning to Washington, DC from being overseas, the "Washington Sniper" was leaving a deadly path of destruction, and the mayhem caused by this duo, was unbelievable. People who are under distress usually identify a leader who will guide them out of trouble. Anyway, the reason I included the anecdotes was really to illustrate the importance of learning about leadership at an early age and continuously infusing the leadership models into our everyday life. Admiral Farragut Academy was the cornerstone in my life for at least understanding of what it takes to be an effective leader. Spending my high school years at Farragut was not as enjoyable in comparison to what my friends were doing at that time, but history is replete with inequities. Many years later, I realized that the rules, drills, and discipline that I learned at Farragut were inherent with the development of a responsible citizen and leader. Major Scott Salley, Collier County Sheriff's Office, Naples, Florida.” David Yoho ’68 – David is in constant contact with his AFA classmates and friends. Here is some information he sent us we’d like to pass along. “The new USS Farragut was commissioned on June 10, 2006. (Ron) Rose (’68) brought Coach Slaby; I couldn't make it but they got me a hat. You might remember Ron's Mom who came to so many events. Anyway, she passed on in July; here's my most endearing memory of her. In the summer of '69, Ron and I'd been out late drinking and it was hot on the second floor of their home so I must have strayed downstairs during the night (no, I don't remember doing it). She passed me on the way to the kitchen sometime the next morning. I was face down and naked on their living room couch. She simply said: "Good morning Yo." I miss her. Also, my daughter April was married a couple months ago - here we are arriving at the reception. If you don't want to see wedding pictures or more pix of Rose (We've seen at least six of him or his family) you'll have to send me something. NOW please before you forget! We've seen Jones, (Richard ) Horstmann (’68), (Jason) Wolins (’68), Robert) Brandon (’68), (John) Fernandez “68), (Robert) Nessen (’68), (Ronald) Bramson (’68) and his babes, Martin Brown (’68), (LTCOL John Gaumer (’68), (Robert) Strong (’68), (David) me and Coach (Slaby). (We didn’t get any other pictures, but presumed that these members of the class of’68 were present at the Wedding, so we wanted to mention who was there).

A note from John Duval’s parents: John & Fran - here's the condensed news: “On May 24th we moved into a villa in the Mews at Homestead Village, a retirement community (Lancaster PA area) ---- No grass to mow and no snow to shovel. We had an invisible fence installed in our yard so scooter, our nine-year old Bischon, can be outside without his leash. On October 16th, I had a total knee replacement on my knee. Thanks to lots of TLC, provided by Fran, I am making good progress.” jnduval@msn.com I can't believe we lost The Duv more than 30 years ago. I need your help. At the 30th reunion in 1998, those in attendance gave me a plate and everyone signed it, thanks to Jay Wolins (’68) for stealing the plate and organizing the signatures. We have a picture of it to prove it exists. In my stupor, I allowed Tom Lanahan (’68) to take the plate so he could ship it safely to me. 8.5 years later I still don't have it - so help me please. Write him now by using this link (lanahan56@aol.com) and sending him a note. Please, cajole him, beg him, entreat, and/or threaten him to send the plate. I've sent him my UPS number so he could take it to the UPS store - they'll pack it and ship it and I'll gladly pay. Better yet, call him (954)-730-9851, I give up. Rob Helfand (’68) wrote to say that he and his wife Rhonda still live in Laguna Niguel. On May 15th 2006, he began a new career as an Administrative Law Judge for the State of California after almost 10 years a Deputy Attorney General. They have 14 year old son, who's a star lacrosse player. He keeps in contact with Howie Reich, class of ‘67, who is an attorney north of LA. As Your Alumni Director I am often asked . . .

Why is Farragut so different? I have given some thought to this frequently asked question and here are my thoughts! I’ve been associated with Admiral Farragut Academy now for almost twenty-one years. Throughout my years at Farragut, I have had occasion to compare the levels of success of Farragut graduates to graduates of other schools. Many say that comparisons are odious, and surely some of them are. However, my experience over the years has taught me that those who have graduated from Farragut have had some very distinct advantages. The academic structure and overall program and process of education at Farragut have definitely left its mark on the lives of those who matriculated at our school. The caliber of not only academic excellence but of personal development in areas such as self-esteem, respect, self-discipline, acceptance of diversity, and determination are unsurpassed by all other institutions. Farragut graduates obtain a level of professionalism upon graduation that many others never even attain throughout their college years. The value of the structure instilled at Farragut empowers students to be self-assured and comfortable with the discipline and self-control they have learned through the years at the Academy which leads to innate sense of respect for the world around them. Today, the concepts of self-discipline and respect are lacking in most other educational institutions. This is a grave mistake. This is the very element that sets AFA graduates ahead of those others with whom they compete at all levels of life, first in college and then in the arena of their private career professions. Never have I known so many successful people. First, I observed as a teacher and administrator their educational growth as well as their personal development within the corps of cadets. Learning to take responsibility for one’s actions is something that is not of value in today’s public schools. Learning the importance of how treat others, in addition to how you act yourself is very important. Farragut graduates know that how you present yourself- the whole package from your behavior to things such as how you dress and wear your clothing- is very important factors of success. Personal hygiene is a value appreciated in the professional world today. Yes, no one can stress enough the worth of those morning inspections that seemed at the time to have no value whatsoever. So too, the competitiveness of the rank structure of the Academy. It was not to subordinate, but rather to instill a sense of awareness that those who succeed in life must outrank the multitudes of inept people who are simply going through the motions of their jobs, always believing success is their due because they show up. Farragut graduates not only show up, but they have a plan and an action to measure against. They realize through learned conditioning to do their best in everything they do because they are aware of those who are constantly judging their actions. They have learned to make the value judgments and ethical decisions which set them apart and cause them to appreciate the value of their personal and professional relationships. All of these things, I have observed about our Alumni. Name any high school that has contributed to American history as much as ours has. In the military service to our country; in the fields of business; law; education; science; can you name any that will surpass AFA? America’s first man in space, Alan B. Shepard, Jr. ‘41 learned disciplines which enabled him to ride atop a Red Stone rocket and become our first national explorer into what is regarded as the last frontier. In the educational world, two of the twelve who have walked upon our nearest satellite, the Moon, are Farragut graduates, RADM Alan Shepard, ’41 USN (Dec.), and BGen Charles Moss “Charlie” Duke, ’53 USAF (Ret). They risked their lives and because of their discipline, structure, and education, they succeeded. We are carving out a new future for the Academy. The leadership of AFA has been constant in its desire to maintain its stellar position in the educational field. One hundred percent of our graduates are college bound and are accepted by colleges each year. Our graduates are sought by all of America’s service academies, outstanding universities with ROTC programs for all branches of our military, and by some of America’s top universities such as Harvard, Duke, Florida, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Michigan, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and other illustrious schools to name just a few. Farragut Receives Progress Energy Grant for SunSmart Schools On Thursday, April 18, 2007, Headmaster CAPT Robert J. Fine, Jr., announced that Admiral Farragut Academy is now one of a select group of Florida schools that will receive a 2kw photovoltaic system to generate electricity on our campus. Progress Energy will install a large photocell array on campus that will enhance our science curricula and provide an exceptional learning tool for all of our students. We are planning to install the array in the grassy area on the South side of the school Library. Construction will begin within the next few weeks. For more information on this program visit www.energywhiz.com or the Progress Energy web site and look for “SunSmart Schools.” Of all the solar energy technologies, Photovoltaics (PV) show the greatest promise for worldwide acceptance and application. Their universal appeal lies in the fact that they generate electricity from the sun. Working Photovoltaics have no moving parts, are relatively simple in design, need very little maintenance and are environmentally benign. They simply and silently produce electricity whenever they are exposed to light. Over the past several years, the U. S. government has directed the largest portion of its solar energy research budget to PV projects; that trend continues even now. With further research and projected advances in this solar technology, Photovoltaics will play a big role in Florida’s energy future.
