EDUCATOR OF THE MONTH 2. The Rev Theatre recently came to visit your school and perform for the third graders. Do students enjoy this interactive way of learning? The Rev Theatre visits us once a year. They are amazing. They do a great performance. They also come into the room and give the kids background on either the culture of what they’re going to see in the play or the geography of where in the world this play is going to be. It’s new faces coming to our room and teaching them things. They’re interested in anything new, but also this fun way of learning through live performance. 3. How do you and your team help students build connections with and respect each other?

1. How did you get into education and what are you currently teaching? I started as an art major at Nazareth College in Rochester. I was 17 when I graduated, so there was pressure for me to decide what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was good at art, so I thought that would be the right direction. It was a great school and really did prepare me and make me well-rounded. After I graduated from Nazareth, I got a job at a local credit union in their marketing department. I just knew that this wasn’t going to be ‘it.’ But I also didn’t know what ‘it’ was. I loved art, but I felt that art was better as a hobby for me. I was also a Sunday school teacher at the time; I taught their second grade class.. I found myself looking forward to Sunday mornings when I would be teaching. I took it seriously and created lesson plans and made sure all the materials were ready when the kids came in. So, in the back of my head, I thought, ‘What about teaching?’ I heard about a year-long program at Syracuse University specifically geared for individuals who had an undergraduate 8 | FAMILY TIMES JANUARY 2024

degree in something other than education. It was a pretty selective group because you were with your peers throughout the whole program. A year later, I had four different student-teaching experiences and my master’s in childhood education. It was intensive, but I can’t recommend it highly enough. It was the best thing and when I was done, I felt like I was ready. I started applying to teaching positions right out of school, but I didn’t get any of those jobs. I was a little disappointed. But there was something about Skaneateles that I loved, so I got on their substitute teaching list to get my foot in the door. The more I subbed there, I started to get requested. At the end of that year, there was an unexpected retirement. I marched into the principal’s office at the time and expressed my interest in the job. The morning after my second interview, the principal called me and offered me the job. It was the best possible news. It was a second grade position at Waterman Elementary. I taught nine years there in second grade and nine years in my current position at State Street Elementary in third grade.

Excellent question. I firmly believe that the social curriculum is just as important, if not more important, than the academic curriculum, especially since COVID, how these kids interact with each other. It has prevented them from experiencing things that would have happened in an earlier grade, like working in small groups or learning how to take turns. We all agree that we have to make time, especially at the beginning of the year, but not limited to the beginning of the year, to have these kids get to know each other. I start every day with a morning meeting. We greet each other and we play a little game or activity. That sets a positive tone for the day. Camp Candle Bar brings ‘a new experience’ to Armory Square BY COURTNEY KLESS

Ignite Your Happy Place.” That is one of the quotes that Camp Candle Bar, a DIY experience in Armory Square, follows.

Ashley Naum started the business with her sister, Lauren. “We really wanted to create a new experience within the downtown area that it never had before, especially in a town of eating and drinking,” said Naum. “The idea of camp is nostalgic to us as a family. We all grew up in Upstate New York and were always in the Adirondack Mountains, and the whole essence of camp is gathering around the campfire. It is the heartbeat of anything in the wilderness and we wanted to bring that same nostalgia to Central New York through our candle shop.” The candle-pouring process is fairly straightforward. When guests arrive at the shop, a fragrance expert begins by walking them through the available scents. There are more than 50 to choose from, and they change each season. From those, guests choose three to five of their favorites, then the fragrance expert helps them build their 10 | FAMILY TIMES JANUARY 2024

perfect scent. The last step is to pour the wax into a jar; a variety of colors, textures, and sizes are available. Each workshop lasts about 45 minutes, and afterward, the candle must cure for two hours before guests can take it home (or it can be shipped if they don’t want to wait). Camp Candle Bar also offers diffusers and wax melts. “Scents bring you back to a person, place, or thing,” said Naum. “They can remind you of so many different points in your life, and we really want to pull at the heartstrings of everybody that comes through and give them a space to detach, relax, and just come as you are.” “Our heart is for the community, our heart is for downtown, our heart is for New York, and we really wanted to bring something to the area that mimics that.” Courtney Kless is the Editor in Chief of Family Times. Oneida County History Center Hosts Not So Tiny Nutcracker Display Not ready for the holidays to be over? Stop by the Oneida County History Center for its Not So Tiny Nutcracker Display.

Everson Announces Selections for 2024 CNY Artist Initiative Local artists will once again be featured at the Everson Museum of Art this year. The museum said more than 70 artists applied for its CNY Artist Initiative. The four selected were: David Edward Johnson, Rachel Ivy Clarke, Manuel Matias, and Cali M. Banks. Slow Cooker Mac and Cheese RECIPE AND PHOTO COURTESY OF HOOD

Ingredients: • 2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked • 5 tbsp. butter • 3 tbsp. plus 2 tsp. all-purpose flour • ½ cup low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth • 1½ cups Hood 2% Reduced Fat Milk in the LightBlock Bottle ®

• 3 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese • ½ cup Hood® Light Sour Cream • ½ tsp. dry mustard • ¼ tsp. ground black pepper • 2 cups frozen broccoli florets, thawed

Directions: STEP 1 Bring water to a boil in a medium saucepan and cook macaroni for 4 minutes. Drain well and add to the slow cooker. STEP 2 Place butter in a large saucepan and melt over medium-low heat. Whisk in the flour, stirring constantly until the mixture is smooth and bubbling gently. Remove the pan from the heat and add the chicken broth and whisk until combined. Slowly add ½ cup of milk, whisking after each addition. Return the pan to the heat and bring the sauce to a gentle boil, stirring constantly until it coats a spoon, about 3 to 5 minutes. STEP 3 Add the remaining 1 cup of milk and the cheese to the saucepan and stir until cheese is fully melted, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add the sour cream, mustard, and black pepper and stir until completely blended. Add this mixture to the slow cooker and mix completely. STEP 4 Cover and cook on LOW for 1¾ hours, then add broccoli and stir well. Cover and cook on LOW for an additional 15 minutes. FAMILY TIMES JANUARY 2024 | 13

Must-Do’s for the New Year BY SARAH LYONS

ast year my husband and I set a goal to set up our will and estate plan. This forced us to look at who would become guardians of our children, what would we do in the event of one spouse’s death, when and how would our money be allocated, and more. These conversations were tough, simply because of the subject matter. Although this process wasn’t enjoyable, I’m so glad we checked it off our list because we can both rest assured that our kids will be taken care of, and our affairs are in order if needed. As we begin a new year, it’s not uncommon to reflect on the highs and lows of the previous year, as well as our accomplishments. We may also reflect on what important items on our list we did not accomplish. Even those of us who enjoy setting goals and meeting them may have a few items on our lifetime to-do list that we have been putting off. As you set goals and intentions for the new year, consider tackling some of these important, but not always fun, to-do’s that you may have been procrastinating. 14 | FAMILY TIMES JANUARY 2024

Appointing Guardians for Your Children Our children are the most important part of our lives, and it is irresponsible not to consider who would care for them if something were to happen to both parents. While this scenario may be unlikely, it’s best to have a plan in place so that the parents’ wishes are followed if they are not around to speak for themselves. Discuss with your partner or co-parent and come to an agreement you are both comfortable with. After you have chosen guardians, speak with them to make sure they are comfortable with the plan. It doesn’t hurt to have a backup in mind in the event that your first choice doesn’t work out. Make sure you put it in writing.

Retirement and Estate Planning Once you have the guardians established and are ready to put it into writing, you can create a will or estate. Have you planned for retirement? When will you retire and how will you pay expens-

es after retirement? Who will inherit your assets and money after you pass? How will it be divided and when will it be received? Do you have life insurance to help support the surviving spouse and children? These questions are not fun to talk about but are very necessary. If your wishes aren’t in writing, you can’t guarantee that they will be carried out as you had hoped. This can lead to strife within the family, or the challenge of your assets being tied up in probate for years. To set up your will or estate, contact an attorney or a financial advisor to help guide you through the process and make sure your affairs are in order.

Break a Bad Habit Habits are hard to break. This year, choose one bad habit such as smoking, eating junk food, or spending too much time on social media. Replace it with a healthy habit such as exercising, meditation, or reading. Set a goal, start small, and take it one day at a time. It can be helpful to choose an accountability partner who can check in on your progress and encourage you if you have the desire to give up or have a relapse.

HOW TO AVOID Procrastination • Develop a plan: Depending on what you are putting off, this could mean a list or a strategic plan. Either way, set goals and a timeline for how you will achieve it. • Be consistent: Creating a new habit is difficult. Consistency is key. • Don’t get discouraged: When you feel like giving up, keep going. • Celebrate milestones: Allow yourself to enjoy rewards as you meet goals. This could be buying yourself a small gift or just giving yourself a break to do something you love. • Find an accountability partner: Having someone to check in with will help you stay on track.

Tell People How You Feel It’s never too late to tell someone how you feel about them. Do something special to let your spouse know you care. Call your grandparents and ask them to share stories of their childhood. Hug your kids and spend time laughing with them. Make memories, forgive others, spread kindness, and settle disagreements. Life is too short.

Clean the Closet Most of us have a junk drawer, closet, garage, or basement that we have been ignoring for months, years, or even decades. Pick one area in the house you have been neglecting and sort through the items. As you purge, reorganize the items you plan to keep. If you have a lot to tackle, start small. Focus on one area of the house and narrow it down to one closet, shelf, or drawer at a time, if needed.

Do Something You’ve Been Putting Off “I’ve always wanted to run a marathon.” “Someday I will write a book.” “I’d like to travel to Europe.” We all have one dream that has always been in the back of our minds. Whether it’s a fitness goal, a travel destination, or a daring adventure like skydiving, there always seems to be a reason to put it off. Now is the time. This year, make plans to do what you have always wanted. If it’s not in the budget right now, start saving and set a goal to make it happen in the near future. As the new year begins, allow yourself to tackle one item on your lifetime to-do list that you may have been procrastinating. These tasks may not be fun, but they are worthwhile.
