Welcome to the 2014 FamilyFest Expo. Our daylong, outdoor summer event provides current and future parents an opportunity to discover resources that will strengthen, enlighten, encourage, teach and entertain themselves and children of ALL AGES. We are dedicated to providing area consumers with one-stop access to the most respected local, state and national companies and organizations that specialize in growth and development assistance, products and services. We are happy to announce that this year a portion of the admission fees will support Children of the Promise (COTP). COTP is dedicated to serve the needs of abandoned or orphaned children in Haiti, reuniting them with their families whenever possible and facilitating the adoption of children with little or no hope of being reconnected with their birth families. We hope you use this Guide as a resource ALL YEAR LONG! It is a way for you to take FamilyFest exhibitors home with you, or reach someone that you didn’t see today.

Meet the family behind FamilyFest Ryan and Courtney VanderPol have been involved in the Sioux Falls business community for over 11 years. They opened the LA Weight Loss Center on Louise Ave in January 2003, which they still own and operate. You can now find them in the Western Mall under the new name CR Results Weightloss, Nutrition & Health. Growing up in Edgerton, MN, Ryan enjoyed the great friendships you develop in a smaller community. He and Courtney wanted to bring that small town feel to Sioux Falls, so in 2013 when the FamilyFest Event became an opportunity, they jumped at the chance. FamilyFest is dedicated to the success and celebration of the family in an environment that is fun and entertaining for everyone of every age.

Become a Junior Naturalist
Calling all Pups! The Pups program offers younger kids the chance to learn more about nature. Similar to the Junior Naturalist program, the Pups activity book is designed for kids ages 4 to 6 to complete with the help of an adult. As part of the Junior Naturalist Program, kids ages 7 to 12 take part in several different levels of activities to earn a certificate, gold seal and embroidered patch. Activities highlight the park’s resources through guided nature hikes, recreational activities, living history demonstrations, evening programs and other fun and educational offerings. Information on how to take part in the Junior Naturalist Program is available at the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center or the Wildlife Station Visitor Center. The Junior Naturalist Guidebook explains the program’s requirements and is packed with crossword puzzles, staff interviews, quizzes, matching games and other fun activities that guide kids as they learn about the park and its heritage. If you have questions about the activities, the interpretive staff is always happy to provide assistance. Further participation takes kids into the realm of outdoor observation. Using hands-on activities, participants learn
the importance of ecosystems, animal adaptations, predator/prey relationships, conservation management, signs of wildlife and other outdoor activities. The various programs offer a time for kids to interact with park interpreters and learn about the Black Hills. To earn an embroidered patch, a series of activities and a Junior Naturalist Program Hour is required of each participant. During the summer season, qualifying activities are held daily in the park. The Junior Naturalist Program Hour is at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day.
Those completing the requirements can earn a patch for their work. For more information, visit either the Peter Norbeck or Wildlife Station Visitor Center.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE PARKS There are nearly 60 state parks across South Dakota, offering spectacular views, abundant wildlife and ample learning opportunities. Many parks are equipped with boat docks, lodges, cabins, campsites, marinas, picnic shelters and horse camps and are open year-round. Daily Park Licenses: (age 11 and under free) $4/person, $6/vehicle
Licenses are required to enter any state park. The license fee does not cover camping costs or additional fees. Riverman/Riverwoman Sprint Triathlon Farm Island Recreation Area, Pierre Swimming Beach 7:40 a.m. The Annual Riverman/Riverwoman Sprint Triathlon takes place at Farm Island Recreation Area and includes a 0.4-mile swim, 18-mile bike ride, and 3.5-mile run. Participants can compete indivudally in their age bracket or as a team. Registration fees apply and a park entrance

Adams Homestead Celebration Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve, North Sioux City 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Take a step back in time and experience some of the cultural and natural history of South Dakota. CandleLight Walk Newton Hills State Park, Canton 7:15 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. The CandleLight Walk will lead visitors along 2.2 miles of candlelit trail through the deep woods of Newton Hills. The trail will be solely lit by candles and carved pumpkins. Walkers will encounter many surprises along the trail including musicians, colorful characters from the past, telescopes, and much more. FestiFALL Newton Hills State Park, Canton 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Pumpkin catapulting, carving and seed guessing are just a few of the activities visitors to the FestiFall participate in. The popular FestiFALL event is attended annually by people of all ages. The event features many family activities including arts and crafts booths, kids’ games and bluegrass music. Kids of all ages can participate in, make and take craft
activities such as lollipop witches, pipe cleaner spiders, and pumpkin pins. As in years past, the pumpkin will take center stage with pumpkin catapulting, pumpkin carving demonstrations and decorated pumpkin contests. Visitors are encouraged to bring in their own decorated or carved pumpkins for judging. If you wish, carved pumpkins may also be used on the Candlelight Walk. Newton Hills Trail Run Newton Hills State Park, Canton 9 a.m. The Sioux Falls Area Running Club is putting on the 13th annual trail run at Newton Hills on Oct 11. This is a very scenic run through the park’s trail system and very successful with over 100 runners each year. Trail distances are 2 miles and 6.2 miles. You may also listen to carolers in the church and make crafts in the schoolhouse. This is a great family event.

W
hen was the last time you crawled around your home on your hands and knees? As strange as it sounds, give it a go. Kids explore their everyday environments, so it’s crucial to check things out from their perspective to make sure your home is safe. And though we often think of babies and toddlers when we hear the words “babyproofing” or “childproofing,” unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in kids 14 years old and under, with more than a third of these injuries happening at home. Household injuries are one of the top reasons kids under age 3 visit the ER, and nearly 70% of the children who die from unintentional injuries at home are 4 years old and under. Young kids have the highest risk of being injured at home because that’s where they spend most of their time. Supervision is the best way to prevent injuries, in the home and out, but even the most watchful parents can’t keep kids completely out of harm’s way every second of the day. The common causes of home-injury deaths are fire and burns, suffocation, drowning, choking, falls, poisoning, and firearms. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most home accidents happen where there’s: w ater: in the bathroom, kitchen, swimming pools, or hot tubs heat or flames: in the kitchen or at a barbecue grill

t oxic substances: under the kitchen sink, in the medicine cabinet, in the garage or garden shed, or even in a purse or other place where medications are stored p otential for a fall: on stairs, slippery floors, from high windows, or from tipping furniture You can take precautions to make these places safer, but the most important thing to remember is to watch young kids at all times. Even if your home is childproofed, it only takes an instant for babies and toddlers to fall, run over to a hot stove, or put the wrong thing in their mouths. Your watchfulness is your child’s best defense. However, accidents will still happen, so it’s important to be prepared. If you’re expecting a baby or have kids, it’s wise to: • L earn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the age-appropriate Heimlich maneuver. • Keep the following near the phone (for yourself and caregivers): - poison-control number: 1-800-222-1222 - doctor’s number

arents and Caregivers, do you need to be concerned about second hand smoke with your children? YES! A great deal of uncontrolled smoking still is taking place around kids and the Sioux Empire Tobacco Free Coalition encourages everyone’s help to protect them from exposure. Secondhand smoke (SHS), also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), is a mixture of 2 forms of smoke that come from burning tobacco: • S idestream smoke – smoke from the lighted end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar • M ainstream smoke – the smoke exhaled by a smoker
Even though we think of these as the same, they are not. Sidestream smoke has higher concentrations of cancer-causing agents (carcinogens) is more toxic than mainstream smoke.1 The level of air pollution in a car caused by smoke from a cigarette is so severe that breathing it is dangerous for anyone, but especially for children. In general, children breathe in more air than adults because their lungs are still developing. They also have little or no control over their environments and cannot leave if secondhand smoke is bothering them.2
As a result, children exposed to secondhand smoke run a greater risk of damaging health effects, such as: • Higher risk for middle-ear infections • Can not only bring on asthma attacks, but can also cause asthma in children • Respiratory tract infections, such as pneumonia and bronchitis, in babies and children younger than age 6 who are exposed to secondhand smoke regularly3 Remember you can help prevent second hand smoke’s effect on your children if you do the following: • Don’t smoke in your car or home • Don’t allow others to smoke in your car or home • Don’t allow caregivers who smoke to hold your children

WeNeedWe The title We Need We is no typo, but rather a statement we find more and more affirmed the longer we work in Haiti. Read any other article we or any other non-profit has written, and you will likely find a standard statement We Need You. And it is true, we do need you. Haiti needs you. Our staff needs you. Our babies need you. However, lately I have felt deeply that this only tells half the story. At the heart of what we do is relationship. A relationship that intertwines the people and children we serve on the ground in Haiti, the volunteers and Haitian employees who toil side-by-side to make it all happen, the families internationally who adopt, and each person that makes a financial or spiritual contribution to COTP. Relationship is never one-sided. By definition, it is reciprocal. If there are not two sides needing and giving, than it is not a true relationship. Therefore, we need you does not tell the whole story. We need we hits home though. At a glance, Children of the Promise is clearly a ministry to give aid and show compassion to impoverished Haitians. However, once you get involved, you realize it is far more than a one way street into Haiti. We give and we get. Our staff, Haitian and international, gives and receives. Our babies receive all that they need, and in turn bless each one of us with joy and peace. We are connected. The people we serve in Haiti need the resources we have in order to survive physically, and we need the opportunity to give so that we can survive spiritually. Each time I travel to Haiti, I'm struck by the contrast of their world to ours. Hopeless and awful were words that first came to mind. Yet even in that context, I encountered the body of Christ, thriving
and hopeful. It was humbling me and exciting me. The sense I walked away with was that they have access to something pure and good, which is far harder to discover in a place where all my needs and even most wants are met. They have nothing, yet they seem to have something I can't bargain, buy, or work for here. Blessed are the poor means something. It's nothing we can see or touch, but it is definitely tangible in Haiti. A moment that will always burn in my mind is sitting at the hospital bedside of a nanny I got to know well while serving in Haiti. She had nothing. She had spent her life's meager earnings providing for her family, many of whom were grown up yet still relied on her. She had spent anything she had left paying for a recent funeral of her daughter. Anything she had left, she had spent on the hospital bills as cancer took her body. She was in her last days and even her very flesh was now spent. I came to comfort her and give what I could, bless her and pay some bills. At one point, she looked at me and said "I'm fine, Jamie, God has given me so much." Then she wanted to know how I was doing. I will never forget the peace, hope and joy she displayed in those days.

That moment humbled me. It forced me to shift what it means to be rich, what it means to be blessed by God. I moved to Haiti feeling like Haiti needed me, and the lives I was able to help did need me. However, my soul deeply needed them. I needed to know people like Mere, who passed away a few days after our visit. We are the body of Christ. One body, all parts necessarily connected by blood and spirit. My challenge to you is to connect with all parts, out of their need and your own. If this means travel, then go and give and bless. open ADOPTION E lizabeth was 22 years old, working a part time job for minimum wage, in a relationship that was not going to last, and living with her parents. When she discovered she was pregnant, she felt scared, overwhelmed and confused. She and her boyfriend Scott discussed all the ways they could try to parent this baby, but no matter how hard they tried, they just didn’t feel it was the right decision for the baby or for themselves. With strong family support, Elizabeth and Scott decided that an open adoption was best for everyone involved. They looked at profiles of potential adoptive families and selected a local couple, Jerry and Suzanne. Jerry and Suzanne were unable to have biological children; adoption was their only way to have children. They didn’t look at adoption as their last option though. They viewed it as a beautiful way to become a complete family. Deciding to adopt was not a quick or easy decision, but it was one they were committed to.
Jerry and Suzanne state, “It was an honor and a privilege to be chosen to be the parents for Elizabeth and Scott’s child. We were humbled and could not believe our chance to become parents was finally here. A dream we had for so long was

going to come true.” Elizabeth shares “I have heard the saying “I have his past and I’m giving you his future.” I think that fits adoption well. Adoption is like a marriage, four people coming together with one beautiful gift from God and He is joining you as a family.” Now, almost 2 years later, these families are a part of each other’s lives in a unique way. They are connected with a forever bond, a beautiful baby boy they named together; Jaxon. These two families communicate with each other like family members do, they get together when it is convenient for all of them. They have a relationship that is truly unique for them. Jaxon is the reason these two couples came together, but he is just a part of the larger picture of family. If you were to ask twenty adoptive families or birth families about their adoption experience, you would likely hear twenty very different stories. There are many, many choices and options available to individuals and families considering adoption, either as a way to build their families or as a way to provide for their child a life they cannot currently provide. Many years ago, adoptions were mostly closed, confidential

matters. Over time, that practice has changed to the point where almost 95% are open adoptions. But even the term open adoption holds many possible meanings and interpretations. Basically, open adoption in its simplest form means there is some type of contact between the birth families and the adoptive family. But in practice, this can include a multitude of arrangements, including: meeting before the birth, exchanging identifying information, ongoing contact (either directly or through a mediator), ongoing visits, and so forth. Each family is able to decide on the level of contact that feels most comfortable to them. Some birth parents still choose not to have any ongoing contact and should not feel guilty about making the choice to have that distance. However, an agency following best practices should still encourage adoptive families to always leave the door open for the possibility of future contact

because it can be so beneficial to everyone involved in the adoption. Open adoption helps to remove the secrecy, shame and lingering questions of who a child’s birth family is and/or why they chose adoption. Open adoption allows birth families to feel more in control and at peace with their decision after being able to choose and meet the adoptive family as well as having the possibility of ongoing contact through updates, contact and even visits. Knowing and meeting the birth family helps adoptive families share information with their children about who their birth parents are, why they chose adoption, and how they can go about finding more answers or having more contact. Adoptees are able to feel whole and complete, rather than always wondering who they continued >

ou know your child needs sleep. But do you know why? It’s not just that overtired kids are cranky. Not getting enough sleep can impact your child’s ability to do well in school and weight. Sleep is essential to overall good health, and it has an effect on one’s mood and emotions, what and how much one eats, one’s energy level, and one’s ability to pay attention. Sleep helps the body repair itself and get energy. How much sleep does your child need? You might be surprised. • Toddlers: 12-14 hours • Preschoolers: 11-13 hours • School-Age Kids: 10-11 hours Consider how lack of sleep impacts your child: •P oor mood management. Just like adults, when kids don’t get enough sleep they can have trouble managing their emotions. Overtime, not being able to control one’s emotions can have an impact on one’s ability to control
one’s impulses and decision make skills. Lack of emotional control can also impact friend and family relationships when emotions flair. • Weight gain. Sleep deprived children have bigger appetites – when children are sleeping, their body makes a hormone called leptin that tells their body it’s full after they have eaten. If children don’t get enough sleep, their body doesn’t make the hormone leptin and children have trouble being able to regulate their food intake because there is limited awareness of being full. And on the flip side of things, when one is tired, the body makes a hormone, ghrelin, that makes you feel hungry (even if you don’t actually need food) which increases your appetite. • Biological Clock Impact. Studies also indicate that poor sleep can throw off the body’s biological clocks, particularly the ‘clock’ that regulates glucose and insulin, two hormones that when out of balance, are closely associated with weight gain, heart disease, and diabetes. continued > www.familyfestsf.com

• T rouble in school. Sleep is essential for building memory. Without enough sleep children can have trouble being attentive in school and they may not be able to recall what they’ve learned. • Accident prone. Just like adults, tired kids are prone to accidents as a tired brain is not able to process as quickly as an alert brain to prevent accidents from occurring. Tips to help your child get sleep • Bedtime Routine. Bedtime routines are important at all ages. When you have a routine it helps prepare your mind and body that it is time to get ready to sleep. • S leep Schedule. Did you know that sleeping in on weekends messes up the body’s internal clock? It’s better to stick close to the same sleep schedule all week long. Your child can get a kind of “jet lag” when trying to wake up early Monday morning after sleeping late on Saturday and Sunday. If you find sleeping in on the weekend necessary, limit it to 1 hour later then your child’s weekday wake up time.

• Lights Out – Gadgets Off. Screens in a dark room can make it harder to sleep. Having lights, phones or TV’s on can trick the brain into thinking it’s still day time and time to be awake. This can actually delay the release of chemicals that make you sleepy. • Power Naps. Most kids over 5 years old don’t need a nap. However, sometimes a short nap can help refresh your child to get through the rest of the day. If your child is going to take a nap, limit it to 20 minutes. Don’t allow a nap after 5:00 as this will interfere with bedtime. It might be best to skip the nap and just try for an earlier bedtime. • Daily Exercise. Moving in the day helps child sleep well at night. Kids who are active tend to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer than inactive kids. Sleep is important at all ages. ullying is a serious problem in our schools. It is estimated that 3 in 10 students face some form of bullying. At Tiger Rock we help children identify bullying situations and give them tools for preventing these circumstances. Many children and parents are unfamiliar with the signs of bullying and ignore or minimize events that are considered bullying and can escalate quickly. Bullying takes away a child’s selfesteem and personal power.
Myths about bullying: • Boys will be boys: many parents think physical roughness is just part of growing up for boys. This is not the case in bullying. It is an imbalance of power. Wrestling with another friend is different than one boy kicking, punching, or pushing another kid. • Bullying isn’t serious: Bullying can be extremely serious. It affects the child’s mental and physical health. Bullying is not a rite of passage. • Bullying is the same thing as conflict: Any two people can have a disagreement, bullying is where on person has a difficult time defending himself. An imbalance of power. • Most bullying is physical: verbal bullying, cyber bullying, and isolation bullying are just as damaging. Name calling is the most common case of verbal bullying.

Symptoms of being bullied: • Stress of being bullied can interfere with learning in school • They can become depressed, lonely, and anxious • Low self-esteem and even think about suicide • Psychological scars that will stay even after the bullying has stopped. • Physical signs of stress, including stomach aches and headaches. • It also affects the other people around, it creates the climate of fear and has a negative impact on learning.
There are 3 S’s to bullying. • Self-Confidence • Stature • Surroundings Self-Confidence: A person who presents confidence is much less likely to become a victim of bullying because he will appear stronger and not give in to the imbalance they are trying to create. Encourage kids to feel good about themselves and to get involved in activities through school, sports, clubs or with friends. It is important for kids to realize that EVERYONE is equal. Everyone is special.
Stature: the way you hold yourself and other perceive you. If walk around confidentially, bullies will not think of you as an easy target. Always look people in the eye when talking or addressing someone. Things that contribute to a strong stature are your facial expressions, shoulders straight and held back, the way you walk the way you stand, and what you say and how you say it. Surroundings: Certain surroundings make it easier for a bully to attack you. Don’t walk home alone, try to find people walking the same direction you are. Don’t sit in the back of the bus. Bus Drivers can not control the whole bus. Avoid walking down the aisle this is where a lot of bullying happens. Try to use the bathrooms at times when teachers are monitoring them. At sports practices stay with the group. Avoid situations that make you feel uncomfortable. Do not hang out with people who are being rude to you.
