FMWR EXPO 2011 Bringing Leisure Needs Facilities and Services to You
The USAG-Red Cloud/Area I Family & Morale, Welfare & Recreation (FMWR) Department will host the first ever FMWR Expo presented by Julie’s Realty & Relocation Company at the Camp Casey Gateway Club on Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This free event is open to all members of the USAG-RC/Area I community. “We are really excited about this special event and delighted to have Julie’s Realty as our Presenting Sponsor,” says Soojin Atwater, FMWR Marketing Specialist and project coordinator.

Several other contributing sponsors, including Gold Sponsors Navy Federal Credit Union and Music Chongbo Tongshin, are also on board. “We’re happy to see local companies step up and support this important event. When you get right down to it, we’re all part of the local community. It’s great to have their support,” Atwater continued. “Our FMWR Department has a wide variety of outstanding facilities, programs and activities for every member of the family. We feel that it’s important to let Soldiers and their Families, and everyone in our community for that matter, know that we are here for them to enjoy their leisure time with quality programs and services,” Atwater says. The event will feature a festive, yet very informative schedule where attendees can see first-hand the many FMWR recreational opportunities the USAG-RC/Area I FMWR Department has available for them. Free gifts will be distributed to all attendees, plus a special drawing will be held with three lucky winners receiving a new Ipad 2. Other prizes will also be given away throughout the day. “Everyone who attends will receive a free tote bag made from recycled banners that we’ve saved up over the past year or so. As they visit the 40 booths, attendees will receive free gifts and informational material, and they’ll get to speak directly with facility and program managers to learn more about what they have to offer. It’s a great opportunity for our customers to see who we are and what we can do for them,” Atwater says. Attendees will be able to sample food products from several FMWR club and restaurant facilities, receive special discount coupons for many FMWR products and services and even participate in several interactive activities during the daylong event. “We want everyone to not only experience a taste of FMWR, but we also want them to have fun in the process. We’ll have video game competitions, health and fitness equipment for attendees to try out, information about travel and tours plus carnival games and arts and crafts demonstrations, to name a few of the many activities available,” Atwater says. “The idea for an FMWR Expo came about because our Marketing team realized that many Soldiers and Family members may not be familiar with some of our facilities or programs, even though they may have been stationed here for several months. Because the Garrison is spread out over several installations from Camp Hovey to Camp Stanley, it’s often difficult for patrons to see and experience all the things FMWR has to offer. The FMWR Expo,” Atwater says, “will give patrons a better idea of what’s out there for them.” “It’s one thing to advertise and promote our many quality facilities and services with visual material and via the Internet, but being able to see first-hand what we have to offer and to meet managers one-on-one to answer questions or concerns is the best way to showcase what we have. Customers will appreciate being able to see for themselves all the things we do in one place at one time,” Atwater continued. “Newcomers to USAG-RC/Area I will find the FMWR Expo especially appealing, but others who have been here longer will also learn things about FMWR they never knew before. That,” says Atwater, “is the main purpose of the FMWR Expo: to inform and entertain.” “It’s a perfect way to discover FMWR without driving out to each installation. In a sense, we’re bringing FMWR to our customers. That’s what marketing is all about,” Atwater concluded.

October is Domestic Violence Prevention/ Awareness Month. It is an opportunity to raise awareness of domestic violence, educate about the signs of abuse and emphasize the negative impact it has on family readiness.
The theme for this year’s campaign is “Together We Can End Domestic Abuse: Act Now”.
It focuses on the idea that a focused Army Community and individual committed to building and maintaining physical, emotional, social and spiritual fitness from accession to retirement, spearheaded by leadership engagement, can overcome the problem of domestic abuse with a healthy attitude and willingness to act. The Army Community Service’s (ACS) Family Advocacy Program (FAP) is the primary point of contact for preventing domestic abuse with its wide ranging set of services for both prevention and intervention. Each individual has a responsibility to help prevent domestic violence. Although there is no known direct cause of domestic violence, there are many contributing factors, including communication issues, stress and anger management skills and inadequate coping skills. FAP provides classes to meet the needs of our military and civilian community. Soldiers, civilians and their Families may attend classes aimed at preventing domestic violence. FAP offers life-skills classes that include stress management, anger management, meditation and communication seminars. These programs focus on preventing domestic violence by teaching skills to cope with everyday life and unexpected events.

AFAP USAG-Red Cloud
Army Family Action Plan
Have ideas or recommendations that could improve the quality of life in Area I? Do you have an issue or concern and think, "It would be so much better if it were done like this"? If so, the Army wants to know!
USAG-Red Cloud will host the FY12 AFAP Conference
October 27-28, 2011 Army Family Action Plan, or AFAP, is a program created to make sure that Army life keeps up with changing times. It gives Soldiers, Retirees, civilians and Families the opportunity to let Army leadership know what is working, what is not and how to fix it. Area I holds an AFAP conference every year. This year’s conference is scheduled for October 27 and 28 at Camp Casey’s Community Activity Center (CAC). AFAP brings together people from all different walks of Army life, making sure that everyone is represented in predetermined groups. Once the groups are together at the AFAP conference, they vote on the most important issues and make recommendations about how to solve them. After the groups make their recommendations, attendees at AFAP conference vote on the three most important issues facing Area I. Issues can be resolved locally, regionally or Army-wide. Issues beyond the scope of this area are forwarded to the next major command Eighth United States Army (EUSA), which also holds an annual AFAP conference to resolve the issues that have been forwarded from all of the United States Army Garrison (USAG) commands in South Korea. Issues beyond the scope of EUSA may be forwarded to the Department of the Army (DA) for resolution at their annual conference. Want to get involved? You can submit an issue by going to your local ACS and filling out an issue submission sheet, e-mailing redcloudafap@korea.army.mil or by filling out and dropping an issue sheet into an AFAP submission box. AFAP issue boxes are located at your local Commissary, Post Exchange, Dining Facilities, Family Readiness Center and ACS Centers. You can also submit an issue via ICE comment system. Want to be one of the individuals deciding the outcomes of submitted issues? Be a delegate. Want to help behind the scenes? Join the AFAP volunteer staff. The public is welcome to participate in the Issues’ “Out Brief” session on the final day of the conference, Friday, October 28. For more information, call 730-3107

New ACS SOFA/VISA & Passport Informational Class Do you need information on getting a US Passport for yourself or your newborn child? Do you need information on getting a SOFA Stamp or Korean VISA?
If so, ACS designed this class especially for you. Camp Casey ACS offers this class every Wednesday, from 1 – 2:30 p.m. to assist Soldiers, civilian and Family members in understanding the process of obtaining these vital documents. By attending this class, you will learn some of the following information: Passports Obtaining a tourist passport when you already possess a no-fee or official passport is simple. Holders of any valid US passport (no-fee or official) apply using the renewal process. First time adult passports are also easy to obtain. Documents required for most passport applications include original Birth Certificates, Marriage License and Naturalization Certificates. Parents of newborn children (born in Korea) need to apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA). With the CRBA, your child will receive a passport and Social Security Number. These applications are also available at ACS centers. Cost for applications vary and are subject to change (US State Department guidelines). SOFA/VISA There are different sets of instructions and requirements for each application. Instructions provided by ACS must be followed as they have been developed from host-country rules. SOFA Stamps and Korean VISAs are required in all DOD civilian, contractor and Family member passports to legally reside in the Republic of Korea and must be obtained within the initial 90 days after arrival. Options for Submitting Passport and SOFA/VISA Applications: Submitting your application at ACS in Area 1 is convenient, but not necessarily the fastest option. Passport applications dropped-off at ACS take a minimum of two weeks to return, but may take more than two months. By travelling to Yanjgu, you can get your SOFA stamp and VISA the same day. Yongsan’s Legal Office (DSN: 738-8311) accepts passport applications on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Every Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., US Embassy personnel are at the Yongsan Legal Office to process passport applications as well. You may also make an online appointment to present your application in person at the US Embassy in Seoul (DSN:7214114).
Please note that all passport applications not given to ACS for processing must be
notarized by the US Embassy. The process for completing Passport, SOFA and VISA applications can be challenging, and if not done properly, can delay the return on your documents as well as impact planned PCS and leisure travel plans. To avoid these issues, call ACS at 730-3107, to reserve your seat in the informational class today.

Juliet by Anne Fortier
Reviewed by Ealish Waddell Julie Jacobs is stunned when her beloved guardian dies and leaves her only a passport bearing her real name, Guilietta Tolomei, and a key to a safe-deposit box in Siena, Italy, containing a bunch of old papers and a battered paperback copy of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” Julie has always felt a strange affinity for the play, but she is astonished to learn that to the inhabitants of Siena, Romeo and Juliet were not fictional characters but flesh-and-blood people who actually lived right there in their own town — and that Julie herself is descended from the historical Juliet, the original Guilietta Tolomei. Roaming Siena on a quest to unravel the tangled legend of her famous ancestor, Julie soon realizes that she may be on the trail of not just academic satisfaction, but also the location of a fabled lost treasure, a prize both utterly irresistible and incredibly dangerous. The vicious feuds of medieval Siena’s great families remain alive in the suspicious minds of their descendants, making it difficult for her to know who to trust. And as Julie learns more about the deaths of her parents, all signs point to the idea that the centuries-old “curse on both your houses” is still at work, which is bad news not only for Julie’s quest, but her own heart. Fortier throws in some inventive twists on the well-known story, creating a narrative that delights in allusions to Shakespeare’s famous work while still keeping the reader in suspense as to what will happen next. The timelines of the two Guiliettas are skillfully interwoven, setting the tragedy of the past against the drama of the present. Historical details mix with literary intrigue, hidden identities, forbidden love, a dash of the occult and even a few underworld thugs for good measure, resulting in a romantic thriller that’s a lot of fun to read.
