Cooking Class

24

Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine

Story by Shantall Cummins Photos by Kim, Ho Yong

Have you ever wanted to teach your kids how to measure ingredients or put together a delicious meal but find you don’t have the time…or patience? Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS) and FMWR have teamed up to get kids involved in the kitchen and teach them about what they’re putting into their bodies when they eat. Packed in a four-week curriculum, the course teaches kids of all ages what they need to know in the kitchen about safety, hygiene, nutrition and, of course, how to cook. “The EDGE! Cooking Course offers children and youth first-hand experience preparing different types of meals, giving them an opportunity to learn

various culinary skills and explore different types of food,” says Patricia Garcia, CYSS administrative assistant. During the class, kids learned how to make cookies, pancakes and omelets from scratch, smoothies and semihomemade pizza. “The first week was the hardest, but it’s also the week that they learned how to accurately measure ingredients,” says David Roudybush, Director, FMWR Business Operations, “We also try to reinforce the importance of hygiene and the proper way to prepare food.” Creativity reigned free as kids were also taught how to decorate cupcakes in whatever fashion or style they wished. “The kids got really creative when cooking. We had Mickey Mouse pancakes, rabbits, we had hearts. We even had some cupcakes that were dedicated to the parents because they are in the military,” continues Roudybush. While learning food preparation is the main ingredient of the class, children learn more than just cooking; sometimes without even knowing it. “When children cook, they learn many skills. They learn about nutrition and they also increase their willingness to try new food,” says Garcia. “In one of our classes, we invited Randy Behr, FMWR Sports Director, to talk to the kids regarding the importance of good nutrition and exercise. The children actually enjoyed it," continues Garcia. Kids also have an opportunity to not only learn how to measure correctly, but as an added bonus, they learn math and a little science too. “They learn to work with fractions for measuring; it’s very hands on. They learn conversions. It gets them thinking mathematically without even knowing it,” says Roudybush. “The kids actually learn some scientific concepts, like how temperature affects volume and how something can change when heated. It's like doing an experiment,” says Garcia. At the end of four weeks, kids learn basic skills to prepare them for real-life cooking in the future while still expressing their creativity and having fun. IN THE ZONE

“It’s really fun and exciting. Kids can learn a lot from this experience,” says 10-year-old Katelyn Perez, “We learned how to make cookies from scratch instead of buying them premade.” “Instead of going to the store and just buying whatever you are trying to make, you can make it on your own,” says nine-year-old Kaylee Jones. 6th-grader Jessica Jones adds, “I find the course very fun. If you really like cooking or making things, then you should come. Plus you also get to eat the food.” During the fourth and last class, students demonstrated their creativity in the kitchen by decorating their own cupcakes any way they liked as their final 26

Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine

project. “I made a doughnut because of my cat, Krispy Kreme,” says Jones while describing a doughnutshaped cupcake. “This one is an Army Soldier, and that’s the flag,” says Jacob Jucaban, a 1st-grader at Casey Elementary, as he explains what his cupcake symbolizes. “We used the same gummy cherries in these cupcakes to symbolize our friendship,” says 8th-grader Kamisha McKnight, about the cupcakes made by friends Serena Bradford and Allana Garcia, 12, Camp Casey Elementary. Parents are encouraged and have the opportunity to volunteer or help out with the kids during the four-week class. “As a parent, I would definitely recommend these classes to other kids in Area I. Through cooking, our

children and youth learn valuable skills,” says Garcia. “This is an excellent program. I would recommend it to other parents. The kids learn cooking skills and interact with other kids by sharing their measuring cups and utensils. Best of all, they get to hang out with their friends after school,” says mom Laura Jones, Camp Red Cloud. The EDGE! Cooking Class is currently open to registered CYSS children grades 1 through 8. There is a small fee for kids from 1st through 5th grade. Kids from 6th through 8th grade may take the class free of charge. “There is no fee for older children because the purpose of EDGE! is to get the older kids, 6th through 8th grade, into something constructive. They’re staying away from drugs, bad influences, all of that,” says Roudybush. CYSS is also always looking for volunteers to help

during the classes in any way they can. The first step is to fill out a simple form at any of the CYSS offices. CYSS must conduct a background check before volunteers are allowed to participate. Interested volunteers should contact CYSS to get started. Parents can also rest assured that CYSS does

27

everything they can to ensure the kids are safe and surrounded by responsible adults from beginning to end. EDGE! Cooking Classes are offered throughout the year, alternating between different camps within Area I for every session. Parents should contact CYSS Parent Central at their respective Area I camp to sign up for the class. But don’t wait too long. Each session is only open to the first 15 kids that sign up. “This particular class filled up within three hours of opening,” says Roudybush. There are many reasons to sign your kids up for a class that offers such a wide diversity of activities all wrapped up in one, but teaching a child to do things on their own and ahead of their peers is priceless. To register for the EDGE! Cooking Class, stop by the CYSS Parent Central Office at Casey Maude Hall, room 209 or the Camp Red Cloud CYSS office at building S-16. For more information, call 732-9141. Dollars and $en$e by David Uffington

Track Your Spending

I

f you have a computer and really don’t know where all your money goes, your life can be easier if you invest in personal-finance budget software. Nearly all of the finance programs have reports that you can customize and generate. Want to know how much you’re spending for groceries? Or how much miscellaneous cash went to coffee in the morning? The program will tell you. Your bank statement will include the debit-card amounts, which you’ll need to add in, but not the cash you spend. You’ll need to enter that as well. Be cautious about the features of any software you buy. There is one brand-name software that will accumulate all of your information in one place. The ads say it can combine your bank accounts with your credit cards and investment accounts — by going into those accounts and extracting the information for you. Another software will make your payments for you automatically. Beware. While it’s a given that they’ve gone all-out to provide security for their servers, not all servers are equal. Do you really want to have every single transaction you make available to potential thieves? Equally important, do you really want to give up that much control of your money? If you come across a deal that you shouldn’t pass up, knowing

ACS

that you still have two more weeks to pay the utility bill, what are you going to do when the computer automatically spends your money on that utility bill? Caveat: If you plan to use an Internet-connected computer for your finances, don’t download any personal-finance software from the Internet. You don’t know what’s in it. Instead, pick a name brand that comes in a box at the store. And when you enter your information into the program, don’t put your account number or even the real name of your bank. Best bet: Use an old computer for all your financial information — and don’t hook it up to the Internet. Test some of the free basic-software programs to see which you like best. What you want is a simple program that will categorize your spending, reconcile your accounts (including retirement or investment) and possibly allow you to print out checks.

Financial Readiness Program courses are available. See page 57 for more information.

Exceptional Service

Exceptional Families

Exceptional Family Member Program

(EFMP)

An Exceptional Family Member (EFM) is a Family member (child or adult) with any medical, physical, emotional, developmental, or intellectual disorder that requires special treatment, therapy, education, training, or counseling. The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is a mandatory enrollment program that works with various military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated community support to Families with special needs. Support may be in the form of education, medical, housing, transportation, information and personnel services. Soldiers on active duty must enroll in the program when they have a Family member with a qualifying condition requiring specialized services so their needs can be considered in the military personnel assignment process. Respite Care is available to Active Army, Active Guard and Reserve Families who are responsible for regular care of a family member with special needs. The EFMP Respite Care Program provides a temporary rest period (up to 40 hours a week), depending on several factors such as medical condition and the needs of the families. EFMP utilizes a matrix to determine level of care to be provided. Care may be provided in the Family’s home or other settings such as special needs camps and/or enrichment programs. The Army EFMP developed respite care to give eligible Families, the opportunity to receive respite care. Eligibility for Respite Care Program is based on EFMP enrollment and the medical or educational condition of the Family member requiring care. If you have a family member who meets the criteria mentioned above, please contact the EFMP Coordinator at USAG Red Cloud, 730-6552 or 7327779 to find out if you are eligible to receive respite care.

Military Spouse Appreciation Military spouses are called on everyday to make sacrifices in order to support their Soldiers. In 1984 then-President Ronald Reagan acknowledged these sacrifices by proclaiming a Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Since that time, the military has recognized Military Spouse Appreciation Day on the Friday prior to Mother’s Day to honor the vital role military spouses play in our nation’s defense. Military spouses are known for their resilience, strength and service to the community. The Pear Blossom Family Outreach Centers on Camps Casey, Red Cloud and Stanley would like to invite all military spouses to join us in celebrating Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Each center will hold an event to recognize the service of Area I spouses.

2011 Army Emergency Relief Campaign Each year the Army conducts a campaign to raise funds for Army Emergency Relief (AER). The annual campaign not only gives Soldiers an opportunity to make a donation for their fellow Soldiers, but also serves to create a greater awareness of the programs and benefits available through AER. Founded in 1942, AER’s mission is to relieve the distress of Soldiers and their Families in a time of financial need. By making interest-free loans and grants available to Soldiers and their Families to meet emergency needs, by providing grants to Wounded Warriors and surviving Family members, and by giving college scholarships to children and spouses, AER is “Helping Maintain Army Strong.” Last year, AER provided more than $77 million to over 66,000 Soldiers and Family members for all categories of assistance. The contributions Soldiers make today will help ensure that funds are available for Soldiers and their Families when needed tomorrow. To maintain the same high standards of “helping the Army take care of its own,” we ask that you join us in contributing to the 2011 AER Campaign. From your Area I AER office to all of you, thank you for your contributions and efforts in making this year’s AER Campaign success.

Unstoppable in Stilettos

A Girl’s Guide to Living Tall In a Small World by Lauren Ruotolo

Reviewed by Rose McAllister Croke Diagnosed at the age of 2 with a rare genetic disorder called McCune-Albright Syndrome, Lauren Ruotolo learned early on that she couldn’t let people put limits on her. Doctors advised against Lauren running and playing due to her weak, easily bruised and breakable bones. It was recommended that Lauren would be best suited for a wheelchair, rather than endure the intense physical therapy needed for her to walk. Faced with a monumental choice at the tender age of 5, Lauren was empowered by her parents and physical therapist to make the biggest decision of her life. Lauren chose to walk. Today, Lauren walks with a pair of crutches, often in shoes with heels that resemble miniature skyscrapers. At 4 feet, 2 inches, Lauren’s condition may have stunted her physical growth, but it gave her an enormous gift: a feisty attitude and fearless approach to living life on her terms. In “Unstoppable in Stilettos,” Lauren shares her brave story of personal power and self-acceptance. Written in a candid, conversational style, each chapter begins with “Lauren’s Lesson,” in which she shares her hard-earned wisdom from her unique life experiences. From choosing to walk and auditioning in front of a famous rapper to moving on from rejection 31 times to get her first job offer, Lauren imparts humorous and motivating stories on how to overcome incredible odds and approach life with gusto.

Army Emergency Management HQDA G-3/5/7

In a time when so many people are unemployed and down on their luck, “Unstoppable In Stilettos” is a timely book that is uplifting and impactful. Lauren Ruotolo’s can-do attitude has enough spark and wit to ignite another person’s own revolution of purpose and self-discovery.
