Observation Post (OP) Dora

As the northernmost observatory in South Korea, OP Dora is located within the DMZ and provides the closest view of North Korea. Propaganda Village and Farmland of North Korea lay in view just ahead as do some areas of Gaeseong. The Gaeseong Industrial Complex and a bronze statue of Kim Il Song can be seen through a telescope.
The Joint Security Area (JSA) The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800 meters across. After the Armistice Agreement was signed, the JSA became a neutral location where the guards from both sides were allowed to move about freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) was not clearly marked. That changed after North Korean guards murdered two United Nations Command (UNC) officers with axes on August 18, 1976. After the Ax Murder Incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA, and that marking system continues until today. The only place where border crossings are allowed is inside the conference buildings of the Military Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is marked with one hundred and twenty six one-meter high white stakes at 10 meter intervals. Throughout the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with MDL markers. Each side owns six guard posts in the JSA and no more than thirty five armed guards can be present on each side. The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations between the North and South. All kinds of political and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red Cross meetings are held in the JSA.
DMZ Third Tunnel The Third Tunnel was discovered 52 km away from Seoul in the administrative district of Paju in 1978. The tunnel is 1,635 meters in length, 2 meters in width and 2 meters in height. The tunnel’s size would allow an army of thirty thousand fully-armed North Korean Soldiers to pass through within an hour. The Third Tunnel is the largest one discovered so far, indicating North Korea’s desire to invade Seoul during that time. All participants must have their passport or I.D. card on them during the tour. DMZ Tour Guidelines - When viewing the Conference Room, do not touch any equipment belonging to North Korea. -D o not speak with, make any gesture toward, approach or respond to personnel from the other side. -M ilitary or other official considerations may prevent entry into the JSA. -C asual clothes, such as ripped jeans, sleeveless shirts, miniskirts, short pants, military clothes, and sandal/ slippers, are not permitted during the tour. - Shaggy or unkempt hair is not allowed. - Children under 10 years of age are not allowed.

Trip to Namsan Park & Hanok Village Namsan Park: Also known as South Hill, Namsan is Seoul’s main peak and once marked the southern edge of old royal Seoul. Remains of the city’s walls can still be seen in some of the park’s wooded areas. Namsan stands in the center of the city, surrounded by three major shopping districts: Namdaemun, Myongdong and Itaewon. Located at the top of Namsan is the Seoul Tower, which stands 483 meters above sea level. Seoul Tower is the city’s most visible landmark and features a rotating restaurant and observation deck to provide an excellent view of Seoul. Namsan Park also contains many other places of interest, such as the Namsan Botanical Gardens, Namsan Public Library, several memorials dedicated to Korean patriots, an octagonal pavilion (“Paljajung”), an aquarium and a cable car that leads directly to Seoul Tower. The cable car operates every 15 minutes from 10 a.m. until 10:30 p.m.

Namsanggol Hanok Village: This 7,934 square meter open-air complex is located on Namsan’s most northern tip and contains several Korean traditional house units called “hanok.” A vast valley and Chunugak Building greet you as you first enter the gate. The area also hosts splendid performances throughout the day. On the other side, you will see five traditional houses, which were modeled after the Joseon Dynasty’s traditional houses and belong to families of various social classes, ranking from peasants to the king. The furniture, along with the antiques displayed in the houses, provide a picture into the past as well as a great photo opportunity. Namsanggol Hanok Village also includes a souvenir shop, a traditional tea shop and games, such as see-saw jumping (“neolttwigi”) and arrow throwing (“tuho”), for visitors. The Village holds traditional marriage ceremonies for visitors to witness during the weekends in the Bak Yeong Hyo’s Residence, giving foreigners a chance to experience more of Korean culture. Let's JAM ! In a Casey CAC Private Music Room

Rhythm. Melody. Life. Music combines all three to create art. From prehistoric to contemporary times, music has played a vital role in society and remains a universal constant, providing a unifying link across cultures. Music can move the soul and inspire when all else fails, and when Soldiers need a little bit of inspiration to get them through the day, they can always turn to the Camp Casey Community Activity Center’s (CAC) hidden jewel: the Music Rooms. The Casey CAC is always bustling with activity as employees and patrons roam the spacious hallways. At first glance, the Casey CAC may seem no different from any other recreation center with its numerous computers, TVs, gaming systems and comfortable couches, but upon closer inspection, you’ll discover that the Casey CAC actually houses four Music Rooms as well, giving Soldiers and Family members in Area I a private place to practice their instruments. The entrance is located across from the ballroom past the reception desk. Although the Music Rooms may seem small, they have enough room for patrons to move freely while providing the privacy that many prefer while practicing. The rooms are even sound proof for those who worry about having an audience. “The rooms are sound proof because we don’t want our customers to worry about being judged as they play,” explained Fred Ware, the Casey CAC manager who points out that if you don’t have an instrument of your own, the Casey CAC also offers the option of checking out their equipment. “We have a collection of electric, bass and acoustic guitars, a complete drum set and an electric keyboard,” Ware says, “although Fred Ware

the guitars are probably the most popular instrument at the moment.” After serving over 20 years in the Air Force as a Military Club Manager, Ware retired as a Master Sergeant and started working as a civilian Club Manager for FMWR. He started his career in Korea in 2002 as Camp Stanley’s Reggie’s manager. In 2006, he moved to Casey. “I was the Business Manager for Camps Casey and Hovey in 2006,” Ware recalls. “I was in charge of the bowling centers, golf course and clubs. A few years later, I was assigned as the Club Manager for Camp Casey’s Warrior’s Club, and just recently, I became the manager of the Casey CAC.” Although Ware hasn’t been at the Casey CAC very long, he knew of the Music Room’s significance long before taking the reins. “The Music Room has been a part of the CAC since 2009,” Ware explained. “Originally, we were located by the front gate, but we’ve been in our current location for a little over a year and a half. The old CAC had two music rooms on the 2nd floor, but because of the demand, we added two additional rooms. “Lots of people bring in their own instruments to play, and the Music Room gives them a nice, private area to play their instruments,” Ware continued. “Many military members, even if they live off post, can’t play in their rooms, so this is a good outlet for them. My hope is that more people become aware of the rooms so that they can use them to their advantage.” Every month, approximately 450 people use the Music Rooms. Because of the number of people rotating in and out, there is a big emphasis on regular maintenance. Minor repairs, which are handled by Recreation Assistants To Yong Kim and Kwang Ung Shin, can be made on site. “Many people like using the Music Rooms because we’re able to keep our equipment tuned and in good working order,” Ware stated. “If a guitar string breaks, for example, we can fix it, but if it’s a bigger problem, we’ll send it off base,” Kim further explained. As a guitarist and member of the Casey Chapel band, Kim not only understands the importance of regular maintenance but also the importance of practice. “If you don’t play, you’ll be out of practice,” Kim says. “The Casey CAC provides people with a place to keep playing and practicing.”

Walk ins are welcome, but reservations are preferred for larger groups. Shin, who’s been working at the Casey CAC for six years, explained, “If you want to use one of the Music Rooms, you simply write your name on the sign-up sheet, and we’ll lend you an instrument. Individuals don’t need a reservation, but if you want to practice with your band, we can reserve a room and time for you.” “In fact,” Shin added, “we have bands that come in regularly to practice.” Peak hours for the Music Rooms are between 6 and 9 p.m. during weekdays, but during the weekends, patrons are in and out of the Music Rooms all day. “I’d say about 80% of our customers are Soldiers,” Shin guessed. “We receive on average 20 people every day. Of course, that number fluctuates depending on the day.” In the past, the Music Rooms have also attracted the interest of Trans World Assurance (TWA), an insurance company that sponsored the Music Rooms. With the help of their sponsorship, the Casey CAC plans on adding new instruments to their collection and repairing old ones. “Thanks to TWA’s sponsorship, we’ll be able to purchase new equipment,” Ware explained, “which is what we’re hoping to do within the next few months. Our patrons are encouraged to tell us what instruments they would like.” Because of the growing popularity of rock music, the instruments currently available attract a large number of rockers. PV2 Jonathan Ramirez is one of many who has picked up an instrument because of his love for rock. “I’ve been playing the drums for over a year now,” Ramirez said. “A friend from Texas inspired me to play, so I just picked it up one day and instantly liked it.” Ramirez is currently with 2-9 Infantry and works as an Automated Logistical Specialist.

When asked why he felt drawn to the drums, Ramirez laughed, “Honestly, the guitar looked pretty hard so I decided against it. With drums, I just started with simple beats and progressed from there.” Ramirez has no formal training but has no shortage of talent either. He’s used the Music Rooms three times a week for the past year while stationed in Korea. His ritual involves selecting a song from his iPod and following along on the drums. “When I listen to a song, I listen to the beat and try to imitate it. That’s how I learn to play that song,” Ramirez explained. “I haven’t come up with my own beats yet, but I’m content with just playing my favorite songs.” Ramirez named Metallica and Slipknot as his inspiration for continuing his drumming. “Drumming is simply a good stress reliever at the end of a long day,” he says. After playing a portion of Metallica’s “Fade to Black”, Ramirez simply stated, “I love the CAC’s Music Rooms. I mean, c’mon – they have drums!” The Casey CAC (Bldg. Our goal is to create positive fitness memories that will last a life time. Our focus is on developing fundamental and motor skills, creating a fun and enjoyable atmosphere and encouraging child participation and team play. SPORTS & FITNESS 4. EXPECTATIONS: U pon completion of registration at Parent Central, the Youth Sports Office will organize sports sessions. See schedule below for important dates and times. CYSS Youth Sports & Fitness Program welcomes all forms of positive reinforcement and enthusiasm from all participants. 5. COACHES: A Youth Sports Clinic, through the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA), must certify all volunteer coaches. See schedule for important dates for certification classes. The Youth Sports & Fitness Program adopts the NYSCA standards of safety and coaching etiquette. In addition, each coach must complete an installation records check (IRC), which is completed through the Garrison. 6. REFUND POLICY: NO REFUNDS WILL BE ISSUED. U nfortunately, program costs are fixed costs; therefore, the Youth Sports Program incurs costs whether a youth finishes a complete season or not. If the child decides this sport is not in their best interest before the first session, we will gladly refund your registration fee.

Unit Service Coordinator Program
The Army Community Service (ACS) Unit Service Coordinator (USC) Program is designed to link Soldiers and Family members to ACS Family Support Services. The USC program is available to provide easily accessible information that will assist Soldiers and Family members in meeting their basic needs and improving their quality of life. The Area I ACS USC Program’s emphasis is placed on programs that promote resilience, self reliance and stability by offering ACS services to Units to help build relationships, community development and referral services. The USC Program’s goals are to: • Connect each military Unit/activity with ACS services. • Provide a visible subject matter expert for Unit staff on ACS issues. • Effectively help Soldiers and Families. • Enhance Unit skills on how to support Soldiers and Families. • Act as a liaison between ACS and the Unit to ensure information and referral is provided on a regular basis. The USC serves as the primary link between ACS and military Units and activities and works in the Unit setting with commanders and first sergeants to train 58

non-commissioned officers to understand what their issues are and what services the Unit needs. An assigned ACS staff member (see chart below) will make initial contact with Command Leadership and Family Readiness Group (FRG) representatives to schedule a meeting to discuss USC program goals and available ACS services. To maintain an ongoing active relationship, ACS USC will make monthly contacts with their designated Unit POC. If the unit has a Family Readiness Group (FRG), the USC can coordinate with the FRG leader to attend an FRG meeting and provide ACS information and assistance. The USC also reminds Units of mandatory briefings (Personal Financial Readiness Management Readiness Training for First Term/Initial Term Soldiers, Family Advocacy and Newcomer's Orientation), facilitates schedulings and makes referrals to other ACS programs or community services for the unit as needed. The USC can also support the following: • Re-Integration Briefings • Army Family Team Building (AFTB) Classes • Unit Special Event/Function Attendance • ACS I&R Displays • SRP Support during deployment processing

Make 2012 the Year You Do It Yourself by David Uffington When it comes to home repairs and maintenance, you don’t always need to hire others. Make this the year you do it yourself - and save money. Here are some projects you can do yourself if you take it one step at a time: - Install laminate and tile flooring: The key is making sure the base flooring preparation is appropriate for the laminate. Ask questions before you buy and read the instructions. Putting laminate flooring on a plywood subfloor upstairs is different than putting down flooring on concrete in a basement. - Plumbing: You can repair a leaky faucet or toilet that keeps running, install washers, toilets and sinks, and more, but know when the project is too big. If the project involves pipes that bring water into your home or if it involves digging up the yard, it’s too big. - Simple electrical repairs: You can install a new outlet, dimmer switch or thermostat. You can rewire a lamp. Buy a voltage detector and be sure to cut off the power at the circuit panel. The key is to know when a project is out of the range of your abilities - and safety. For many electrical projects, your local code likely will require a licensed electrician. - Decorating: Look through magazines at the library for ideas that appeal to you. Paint, wallpaper and new slipcovers or throw pillows can change the look of any room. Here are some more tips: Some of the big-box hardware stores have videos on project how-to, but the best ones are on YouTube.com where others have posted videos of their own. You’re also likely to learn more about what NOT to do by watching these. Expand your tool box if you need basics such as a hammer, two types of screwdrivers, and so on, but borrow any expensive tools you’ll only need once. If you haven’t done a project before, read the instructions twice. Ask for advice, and get a friend to help. If a friend is doing a new project, offer to lend a hand. You’ll pick up ideas and hints. Take classes: Saturday morning classes at the local big-box store can teach you the basics for various homerepair projects. Rule of thumb: Know your limits so you don’t end up paying more for a professional fix. 60

The Heritage of American Rodeo by Richard C. Rattenbury, Ed Muno photography
Reviewed by Larry Cox The first recorded rodeo competition in America took place in 1869 in Sterling, Colorado. From that modest beginning, rodeo has become a nationally recognized sport that reflects the rugged individualism and competitive spirit of the American West. The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City has one of the most extensive collections of rodeo memorabilia in the nation. It includes the Dickinson Research Center, which houses the original photographic
collections of such prominent rodeo documentarians as Ralph Russell Doubleday, DeVere Helfrich and Bern Gregory, as well as items such as rodeo day sheets, programs, periodicals and postcards. Curator Richard C. Rattenbury has used much of the museum’s collection for this magnificent book, the eighth volume in the Western Legacies Series. Other titles in the series include “A Texas Cowboy’s Journal: Up the Trail to Kansas in 1868” by Jack Bailey and edited by David Dary and “Horses that Buck: The Story of Champion Bronc Rider Bill Smith” by Margaret Kahn. Rattenbury has compiled an engaging history of rodeo, from its first recorded competition just after the Civil War to its rise to national prominence during the 1920s, continuing through the present. The book is divided into three main parts: A Rodeo Overview, A Collection Portfolio, and Rodeo Honorees, 1955-2009. The role of women in the sport also is well represented. “Arena Legacy” is a splendid book due in no small part to its use of rare and historic images. These illustrations blended with its crisply written lext reveal how rodeo evolved from an amateur contest of working hands to a multi-million dollar competition staged for professional athletes. This is a fitting tribute to a sport that is truly a piece of Americana.
