a lot of calories, an efficient way to work your whole body in a short period of time, tailored to incorporate different exercises,” explains Robert Gobble, the certified instructor of the fitness boot camp at the Camp Casey Carey Fitness Center. “You work, you sweat and, best of all, you burn calories like crazy. These workouts increase muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, and help with weight loss,” Gobble emphasizes, explaining the benefits of participating in the fitness boot camp. According to Gobble, who is also the USAG-RC Fitness Director, boot camp fitness exercises are great ways to keep your body physically active, which is one of the most important elements to help keep Soldiers ‘ready-to-fight.’ 22

“Boot camp fitness programs are scientifically designed workouts to suit a wide range of people including Soldiers who value physical fitness and are serious about remaining physically agile and trim,” Gobble continues, discussing the benefits for Soldiers who participate in the class. “Our boot camp techniques and exercises will burn extra fat and calories. They also encourage Soldiers to institute a different and healthier life style,” assures Gobble, a certified Health/Fitness Instructor and a certified Personal Fitness Trainer from American College of Sports Medicine, Indianapolis, Indiana. Like many other fitness boot camp programs, Gobble offers a variety of workouts in his class so that every individual muscle of the body is strengthened

Zumba

If you’re looking for something more rhythmic and

enjoy the freedom to choose your own way while you exercise, Zumba may be the exercise choice for you. “Zumba is a Latin based dance fitness method,” defines Kathleen Walsh, a Zumba certified instructor at the Camp Casey Carey Fitness Center. “Zumba uses Latin movements as well as international dances like Salsa. It’s a dance fusion from all around the world that people can relate to,” added Walsh, an enthusiastic Zumba practitioner. Because Zumba classes are upbeat, energetic and fun to follow, they are often described as a fitness dance party. “In a Zumba class, the instructor rarely talks. It’s more hand movements, facial expressions and signaling rather than giving step-by-step instructions. You can either follow the instructor or dance on your own. The idea is to be there without thinking about working out,” says Walsh. The Zumba class at the Carey Fitness Center also provides a place for Family members, including male spouses, to get together and share something in common. Babies in strollers and toddlers are acceptable. It is common to see them swing their little feet watching their moms doing their fitness workouts. “It’s not about just losing weight. I would like our Family members to participate in a recreation program rather than sit at home playing on a computer all day. Zumba gives them a chance to meet new friends and do something that makes them feel good about themselves,” concludes Walsh, a member of Families in USAG-Red Cloud community. Because you can set your own tempo, pregnant women are able to participate in Zumba classes. “I’ve been taking this class from the beginning of my pregnancy. It’s really good exercise. I can do it

YOGA

In addition to boot camp and Zumba classes,

USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR offers something more comforting during your workout - a yoga class, Vinyasa style. Vinyasa yoga is all about movement from one pose to another while you breathe in and out. This particular style of yoga may look a little more challenging than others but the class is open to everyone from beginners to advanced yoga practitioners. “The easy part comes with regular practice. With practice, the class and the poses will become easier. I tell my students that all the time, because we only meet once a week, I always recommend they practice on their own even if it’s just for a few minutes a day,” says Zeny Bate who teaches yoga at the Carey Fitness Center. Bate, who studied at the Integrative Yoga Therapy School in Santa Barbara, CA and became a certified and registered yoga instructor 13 years ago, suggests people keep an open mind when they step into the yoga class. “When some people think of yoga, they imagine having to stretch like a gymnast or be able to get into a pretzel position. People tend to worry that they are too old or unfit to do yoga. The truth is you’re never too old to improve flexibility,” says Bate, a firm believer in health improvement practices. Bate’s yoga class is held every Friday from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the Carey Fitness Center. Participants should bring their own yoga mat, towel and a bottle of water. Loose comfortable clothes are recommended. 28

Get Ready to File Your 2011 Tax Return by David Uffington

Y

ou’ll be receiving your W-2 and 1099 income forms in the next few weeks. Your 1099 for bank interest and 1098 for mortgage interest paid in 2011 should show up in the same time frame. When they arrive, check them immediately. Compare to interest reported on your bank statements and your year-to-date income and the deductions from your last paycheck of 2011. If you’re self-employed, check the figures you’ve kept all year. If there are any discrepancies, report them immediately, before you file. The company issuing the forms will be required to send amended forms to you and the IRS. Even before your forms arrive, you can use your same estimate figures from above to run what-if scenarios with tax software on your computer. If the numbers don’t match once the forms arrive, you’ll be able to make changes in the program. (Take that opportunity to investigate why your numbers don’t match.) If you’ve never used computer tax software, some of the fairly easy ones are TurboTax by Intuit, TaxCut by H&R Block and Tax- ACT. Beware any off-brand names that offer to let you do your taxes 58

Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine

online. They could be data collecting, and your Social Security number, name and address are valuable to thieves. Enter the data carefully, especially your Social Security number, amounts and employer ID. Save your file often. If you used a software program last year and are happy with it, purchase the same brand again. Let the two programs talk to each other. (When it asks if you want the program to import the data from the previous year, click yes.) Assuming you haven’t changed jobs or banks, much of the data, such as employer ID and company name, will transfer to your new software. The earlier in the season you buy tax software, the more important it is to do the program updates. Tax changes can (theoretically) happen at any time. Every time you sit down to work on your taxes, ask the program to check for updates. Do the same thing with your state tax software. Most programs will let you do an efile of your tax return. Whether or not you chose this option, be sure to print out a copy (forms and all supporting documentation) of your tax return, including the state return.

Sinatra

Hollywood His Way by Tim Knight

Reviewed by Larry Cox Although it’s been more than a decade since the death of Frank Sinatra, he is still very much a part of our American culture. Several new biographies have been published, his recordings sell well, and an entire satellite station is devoted to his music. In his new book, film critic Tim Knight documents the 59 films in which Sinatra appeared, beginning with RKO’s “Higher and Higher” from 1943, and ending with his final credit, “Listen Up! The Lives of Quincy Jones,” released by Warner Brothers in 1991. Knight’s book covers each film with reviews, behind-thescene stories and hundreds of rare color and black-and-white photographs, making this the ultimate guide to the films of Frank Sinatra. This coffee-table-size book is divided into four basic parts: “Frankie’s Rise and Fall, 1941-1952”; “The Crooner Comes Back, 1953-1959”; “The Rat Pack Years, 1960-1964”; and “Sinatra’s Hollywood Twilight, 1965-1991.” Sinatra made several memorable movies, including “From Here to Eternity,” which marked his 1953 comeback, and perhaps his best movie performance, John Frankenheimer’s gritty 1962 classic “The Manchurian Candidate.” It’s Sinatra’s flops, however, that make this book so intriguing. For example, one has to wonder why he agreed to get involved in such monumental misfires as “The Devil at Four O’Clock,” “The Naked Runner” and “None But the Brave,” which he also directed. The fact that he took such chances is why he remains such an interesting entertainer. Sinatra never played it safe. Knight has researched his subject well and sets the record straight. For example, despite rumors to the contrary, Sinatra did not pull “The Manchurian Candidate” from circulation due to political concerns, and it was never a “lost” film. Today, nearly 50 years after its premiere, the movie is regarded as a masterpiece. Time has not diminished either its power or relevance, and the same might be said for Frank Sinatra.
