Gyeongbok Palace & Cheonggye-cheon Tour

Saturday, July 9 Gyeongbok Palace Gyeongbok Palace was erected during the reign of King Taejo, founder of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) but was destroyed during the 1592 Japanese invasion. It was reconstructed in 1868, and features 4 gates, including Gwanghwamun, the southern main gate.

Cheonggye-cheon Originally a natural stream, the Cheonggye-cheon dates before the Joseon Dynasty designated Seoul as its capital. It was a place where women gathered along the stream to do their laundry and where children gathered to play. During the Japanese colonial period, the Cheonggye-cheon went through drastic changes - it filled with trash and waste as makeshift houses were built alongside the stream. During the 1950s, construction began to cover the stream in concrete, and by 1971, a 5.6 km long, 16 m wide highway extending from Gwanggyo to Majang-dong was completed over the stream. All houses alongside the stream were demolished, freeing space for businesses. During the 1980s and 1990s, it was regarded as a source of health and environmental issues, but after reconstruction, it is now an oasis located in the heart of Seoul.

Zooming In on Photography:

Snapshots of the Basic Digital Photography Class at Camp Casey Kamila Jerichow Instructor

"Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I'm going to take tomorrow." ~ Imogen Cunningham

Story by Kimberly Covey Photos by Kim, Ho Yong

T

ake a look at your camera. Do you know what all the dials and buttons are used for and how to use them to your advantage? Chances are, unless you have studied photography extensively, you don’t. That’s why Kamila Jerichow, instructor for the basic digital photography class offered every Thursday at the Camp Casey Community Activity Center, volunteers her time and efforts to mentor fellow photography enthusiasts. Up on the classroom wall for everyone to see is a quote by Imogen Cunningham, a famous photographer during the early 1900s, that perfectly describes the feel of the class. It reads: “Which is my favorite photograph? The one I’m going to take tomorrow.” There is excitement in the air as students quietly settle into their seats and await instruction. Even

after a long day, students gathered in Jerichow’s class are eager to learn more about their passion for photography. The class begins with an introduction to the week’s focus. Jerichow often goes over the material first to give students an idea of what the course covers. “I explain the concepts, and then I get people to try them out. There’s always a lot of discussion,” Jerichow says. As she went through some slides, several students tinkered with their cameras, trying to apply what they already learned in their first few minutes in class. “The instructor starts with slides, and then gives us small breaks in between to practice with our cameras. She walks around and answers questions IN THE ZONE

39

one-on-one,” student Casey Cummings explains. “It’s rewarding being able to have someone who’s experienced and able to physically show you on your camera the different settings instead of just reading a manual.” Classes range anywhere from one to two hours. With each class, Jerichow touches on topics that are essential in photography. Students are able to learn in a relaxed environment at their own pace, creating a comfortable atmosphere for everybody. “I’d say the environment is very cozy. I’m able to ask questions, knowing that someone else wants to know the answer too,” says Karen Savage, who has been taking the course since early May. “It is the most rewarding thing to know my equipment and not be afraid of it. Now I know I’m not going to break it by changing the settings or modes.” Many others share her sentiments about the course. Marvina Snell-Tall says, “I learn so much about basic photography in this class. It’s very hands on, and you develop new skills daily.” 40

Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine

For others, it’s the instructor’s ability to explain things thoroughly that helps them through any difficulties they may encounter. “The most difficult part is understanding the terminology, but she’s good at explaining and she answers all of our questions,” says Cummings. Jerichow encourages students to bring their cameras to every session. “Basically, I teach people how to use their own cameras. Today, people just buy a new, fancy camera with lots of buttons, but many have no idea what the cameras actually do, so they just put it on the green dot and snap away. They don’t explore all the options that the camera actually gives them. This class is about showing them what they can do to create quality photographs,” she says. Originally from Poland, Jerichow and her husband have been in Korea several months. Although she has taken photography courses and workshops in the past, her passion for photography reaches far past her educational background.

“I mostly learned about photography by myself. Most people start from a basic course and then continue on their own, but I went the other way around. I learned the basics first, and once I became more advanced, I started taking courses,” she says. Her most recent inspiration to teach, however, came from a workshop that she attended last January. “It was a workshop with famous photographer Joe McNally, who works for National Geographic. The way he teaches his class really made me want to teach as well. This is the first class I’ve actually taught, but I’ve always been the go-to person for all of my friends’ photography problems,” she continued. As the course progressed, it was apparent that the people involved all possess the same desire to share their view of the world to others through photography. “I appreciate the world more through my

camera and the pictures that I take,” explains Savage after a few lessons. Instructor Jerichow agrees. “I sometimes see things differently than most people would, and I enjoy showing people my point of view,” she says. The basic digital photography class is offered for free at the Camp Casey Community Activity Center every Thursday at 6 p.m. For more information, please call 730-4601/4602. Z

Yoga Class Why do yoga? The short answer is that yoga makes you feel better. Practicing postures, breathing exercises and awareness makes you healthier in body, mind and spirit. Yoga lets you tune in, chill out, shape up – all at the same time. For many people, that’s enough of an answer. But there’s more if you’re interested. For starters, yoga is good for what ails you. Specifically, research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, headaches, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, stress and other conditions and diseases. What’s more, yoga improves muscle tone, flexibility, strength and stamina, reduces stress and tension, boosts self esteem, improves concentration and creativity, helps with weight loss, improves circulation, stimulates the immune system and creates sense of well-being and calmness. To find out more about yoga, visit the Casey CAC and join the Wednesday class taught by a certified and registered hatha yoga instructor. Dress comfortably, and bring a yoga mat, towel, bottled water and, most importantly, an open mind.

ARMY COMMUNITY SERVICE Happy 46th Birthday

Then Army Chief of Staff, General Harold K. John, announced the creation of the Army Community Services (ACS) on July 25, 1965. Later that year, he also issued a regulation outlining the procedures for establishing ACS centers on Army installations worldwide. Since that day, ACS has been a mainstay in providing services for Active Duty and retired Soldiers and their Family members. ACS continues to play a significant role in the readiness and well-being of Soldiers and their Families. Because the needs of Soldiers and Families change over time, ACS has adapted to continue serving as a place where Soldiers and their Family Members can get their best start on “Real-Life Solutions for Successful Army Living”.

Today ACS provides services in the following areas: Information and Referral—A Where-to-Turn when you need help Education and Training on Finances, Relocating, Job Research, Parenting, Couples’ Relations, and Stress and Anger Management Emergency Financial Assistance: Army Emergency Relief (AER) Personal Assistance and Advocacy: Victim Support Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) Volunteer Opportunities Immigration and Passport Assistance Family Outreach Centers—A place to meet other Spouses And many more. During the month of July, join us in celebrating our birthday and years of service to 2ID and USAG- Red Cloud Soldiers, Families and Civilians. For more information, please call 730-3107. 54

2011 Army Emergency Relief Campaign

F

ounded in 1942, AER’s mission is to relieve the stress of Soldiers and their Families during a time

of financial need. AER provides interest-free loans and grants to Soldiers, Wounded Warriors and their Family members and awards scholarships to Family members, ensuring that AER is “Helping Maintain Army Strong.” Each year the Army conducts a campaign to raise funds for Army Emergency Relief (AER). The annual campaign not only gives Soldiers an opportunity to make a donation for their fellow Soldiers, but also serves to create a greater awareness of the programs and benefits available through AER. Last year, AER provided more than $77 million to over 66,000 Soldiers and Family members. The contributions Soldiers make today will help ensure that funds are available for Soldiers and their Families tomorrow. To maintain the same high standards of “helping the Army take care of its own,” we ask that you join us in contributing to the 2011 AER Campaign. From your Area I AER office, thank you for your contributions and efforts in making this year’s AER Campaign a success.

Dollars and $en$e by David Uffington

Yard Sale Tips Summer is a great time to de-clutter and make a few dollars at the same time. Holding a yard sale can be work, but it also can be lucrative. Here are some tips to make your yard sale successful. Posters and signs: Put up notices in grocery stores, the library, senior center — anywhere you can find community bulletin boards. Be sure what the laws are in your area about posting on telephone poles. Make a list of the sign locations so you can take them down quickly after the sale. Ads: Go in with others on the cost and hold a multi-family sale. The bigger the sale, the more traffic you’re likely to get. Organize: Set aside the items you want to sell. Gather user manuals, clean your items and make them look as attractive as possible. Pricing: Put prices on everything, ideally where the sticker easily can be seen. Put bigger signs on items such as furniture. Recruit the kids: You might convince them to sell their unused toys if you allow them to keep the money. If nothing else, you can clear some of the clutter out of their rooms. Clothing: Make sure items are washed and dried and hung on hangers. Check the pockets. Books: Price them cheaply enough and they’ll move quickly. Flip through the books to make 56

Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine

sure you haven’t left anything between the pages. Cash only: Put up a sign that says you’ll only take cash — and stick to it. If someone wants something, be willing to “hold” an item for a few minutes while your customer runs to the nearest ATM. Generally, however, people know they’re going to spend money at yard sales, and they bring the cash they need. Table displays: Have enough tables so that merchandise is up off the ground. Don’t make people bend over and paw through boxes of stuff under a table, especially clothing and books. Paper or plastic? Collect plastic grocery bags for people to use. Be honest: If the printer doesn’t do color photos well but is great with black ink, say so on the price sticker. Making change: Have plenty of bills and coins to make change. Designate a family member to run the cash box — and not leave it unattended for a second. Even better: Use a pouch that belts around your waist.

THE

MOMMY

DIET By Alison Sweeney, with Christie Matheson

Reviewed by Rose McAllister Croke NBC’s hit reality series “The Biggest Loser” and an actress in Hollywood, Alison Sweeney knows a thing or two about dieting and fitness. Sweeney, who stars on the long-running daytime drama “Days of Our Lives,” teams up with cookbook author Christie Matheson on “The Mommy Diet,” a practical guide for moms-to-be on how to get physically and mentally fit before, during and after pregnancy. Sweeney shares personal anecdotes and speaks truthfully about motherhood and the toll it takes on a woman’s body, free time, self-image and sex life. She dispenses sisterly advice on the importance of self-care, from easy-to-follow, illustrated exercises and figure-flattering fashion tips to ways to avoid the nutrition traps that many new mothers fall into. She also shares her favorite snack recipes and play lists of the songs that motivate her to get moving. “The Mommy Diet” is organized in five sections: before pregnancy, during pregnancy, the nine months after pregnancy, a jump-start program for mothers who haven’t exercised regularly or at all since childbirth, and an overall maintenance program. Each chapter covers fitness and food, with specific plans for working out and eating right. As the mother of two young children who juggles two jobs, the 34-year-old Sweeney is an inspiration to all new moms who struggle to find the time to shower let alone exercise. “The Mommy Diet” doesn’t make empty

promises like other diet-loss books. Instead of focusing on obsessive calorie-counting like other diet tomes, it encourages readers to focus on the big picture and make every day count toward long-term fitness goals. In doing so, “The Mommy Diet” delivers a digestible message about diet, and one that readers won’t want to lose.
