Tiger Feet - quality children’s summer and school footwear

Contents

T

iger Feet is the place to visit in Dunfermline if you’re looking for children’s shoes. Their trained professionals will provide a full fitting service for your children and work hard to find the correct shape of shoe to suit your child’s feet, even if this means ordering something in. This approach ensures the best fit possible and also help to maximise ‘growing time’. Once your child starts school, their school shoes become their most important pair of shoes. School shoes have to be not only a great fit but also incredibly hard wearing! Back to school time is the busiest time of the year at Tiger Feet, so to make school shoe shopping in July and August as stress free as possible, the shop has instigated an appointment system along with normal walk in appointments. So, if you’re looking to get school shoes sorted over the summer holidays, then do call the shop to book your back to school appointment, as everybody will have the same idea! It is advisable too, to shop early summer to avoid the worst of the queues and have the widest choice. New owner Heather was also keen to reassure those

customers with vouchers or loyalty cards from the Clever Clogs days that these will be honoured by Tiger Feet. For the best range of quality shoes for children and teens with friendly and knowledgeable service visit Tiger Feet; stockists of: Startrite, Ricosta, Geox, Lelli -Kelly, Vans, Hunter, Dr Martens and many more quality brands.  16 Bonnar Street, Dunfermline KY12 7JQ 01383 732 115 Email: enquiries@mytigerfeet.com web: www.mytigerfeet.com 9.30am - 5.00pm. H

ello readers. This May issue sees the return of the popular parties feature. Why is it that entertaining and organising a party fills us with such thoughts of fear and loathing? Or is that just me? I shudder at the mention of baking a scone, let alone a novelty cake. Leave it to the professionals, that’s my motto. For inspiration on who to call when the ‘its 21 sleeps to my birthday’ countdown starts see pages 8-12. As ever, it seems there is a lot going on in May and June. There are lots of charity walks and fundraisers. It must be so difficult for smaller, individual charities and causes to raise vital funds as there are so many good causes that need our attention and our cash. So spare a thought for those on our radar at least and dig deep please. You’ll have fun doing so.. 

e all know the importance of maths and English. It has been widely shown, for instance, that young people with better literacy and numeracy skills are far more likely to succeed in gaining good employment and fulfilling their potential later in life. Kumon Educational, the UK’s largest supplementary education provider, offer maths and English study programmes which are tailored to each child’s ability. Established for over 50 years, Kumon’s unique worksheetbased method can help your child to excel academically, develop their capacity for learning independently and boost their allround confidence. The Kumon programmes complement

classroom learning, building speed and accuracy and developing abilities such as time management and problem-solving. Above all, the programmes nurture independent learners, ensuring each child can study by themselves. There are currently over 67,000 students studying at more than 660 Kumon study centres across the UK and Ireland. Poppy Ball with a red theme will take place on Friday 26th September at The Glen Pavilion, Dunfermline, to raise vital funds for veterans’ charity Poppyscotland. Volunteer Christine Evans, who runs the annual Scottish Poppy Appeal in the town, knows how important it is for Poppyscotland to raise funds outwith November too and is generously giving up even more of her time to organise this event. Guests are invited to wear something red to show their support, which could include a red dress, red shoes or a red bow tie. The Poppy Ball marks the centenary of the start of the First World War, an important year for Poppyscotland. While times have changed, the issues faced by veterans 100 years ago are remarkably similar to those of today. However, year-round fundraising events like this enable Poppyscotland to provide practical support to veterans and their families now and in the future. 

Tickets for the Poppy Ball are £40 and include a drinks reception, two-course dinner and entertainment. Contact Kirstie at Poppyscotland on 0131 550 1547 or email fundraiseforus@poppyscotland.org.uk

n Scotland a healthy baby dies suddenly and unexpectedly every nine days, the largest cause of death in infants after the first month of life. Sadly for many families a cause is never found for why their baby died. The Scottish Cot Death Trust has three main aims: to fund research into the causes of cot death, to provide education to parents and professionals and to support families affected by cot death. From 6-9th June 2014 a walk from Newburgh to Kincardine Bridge is taking place to raise awareness of the Scottish Cot Death Trust and its work. Birth, Baby & Beyond New Childminders needed across Perth and Kinross

T

here is currently a shortage of childcare provision in most rural areas of Perth & Kinross. Childminders are the ideal type of service to fulfil demand, particularly to provide before and after school care for children attending smaller primary schools. Have you ever thought about whether it would suit you to be self-employed and working from home as a childminder? If so you might be interested in attending one of the childminder Pre-Registration Training courses being run by Perth & Kinross Council’s Childcare Strategy Team. These free courses are aimed at people who love children, have a caring nature, a sense of humour and lots of patience. Previous experience of working with children is not required. Four courses are being offered between now and November. The first is a two day course on Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 May 2014. The two day courses run from 9.30am 4.30pm each day with a free crèche provided if there is sufficient demand. These courses are all being held in the Community Wing at Perth Grammar School. Please get in touch to book a place, or just to have a chance to talk about childminding and what the course covers.  Phone 0845 601 4477 or e-mail: childcare@pkc.gov.uk to find out more about childminder training options or for details of childcare in your local area

Autism matters at the one stop shop

T

he autism spectrum is the collective term for a range of conditions that impact on an individual’s communication, social interaction, social imagination and flexible thinking. Individuals on the spectrum are also likely to have sensory and information processing difficulties that can range from subtle to complex. The autism spectrum encompasses individuals across the cognitive ability range. In other words, a person may be on the autism spectrum and have a learning disability or may be of average to above average intelligence. It can be a challenge for parents and professionals to understand, recognize and respond to the needs of individuals who have an autism spectrum diagnosis. Individuals on the spectrum can also find it challenging to understand the implications of such a diagnosis. In recognition that one in a hundred people in Scotland have autism, the Scottish Government developed the Autism Strategy in 2011 and consequently funded six One Stop Shops for two years in collaboration with Scottish Autism, Autism Initiatives and the National Autistic Society. In Fife, the One Stop Shop is managed by Scottish Autism and it was opened in Dunfermline on the 5th of February 2013. The service offers people with autism, their families and professionals information and advice about autism through one to one appointments, drop - ins and a variety of workshops. The One Stop Shop also provides information about the kinds of support services that are available in the local area and how to access them. Not only does the service act as an information hub, the One Stop Shop works closely with other groups and agencies, collaborating to understand

and respond to the needs of the local autism community.  Our monthly calendar of events can be accessed through the Scottish Autism website www. scottishautism.org/ family-and-professionalsupport/one-stop-shops For more information on Fife’s One Stop Shop of if you would like to meet with a member of staff you can contact the service on 01383 724 200 or at fifeoss@ scottishautism.org

Birthdays and Parties

Fabulous parties

ÊÊ You have 3 wishes…

At every age By Joanna Moorhead

A

birthday party is a ritual of childhood and an event that’s remembered forever. So the pressure is on – how do you ensure success and survival (both your own and your home’s)? Joanna Moorhead guides you through what’s best, age by age.

Age 0-3 ÊThere’s Ê just one word that matters here: simplicity. Birthday parties for tots can be marvellous, memorable affairs, but they don’t need to be elaborate or to involve much expense or entertainment or special props. In essence, you’re catering for the grown-ups as much as for the children – because at this stage, the adults will definitely stay (and you’re more than likely to have a few grandparents in the mix as well). Concentrate on creating a fun, easy, safe space for the children – a soft play space with plenty of toys strewn around is ideal – and make sure the adults are well cateredfor: if they stay calm, the children will as well. If you want something with a bit of a theme, how about a teddy bears’ picnic? Make sure everyone remembers to take their favourite

cuddlies home at the end though, or there will be tears at bedtime!

Age 4-6

ÊAt Ê this stage parties can be a bit more ambitious and a time when it is well worth investing in a great entertainer: they are experts, know how to crowd control while producing shrieks and honest laughs. However don’t assume that to put on a great bash you need to spend lots of money. At this age children can have loads of fun without a big outlay; later on, when they’re tweens and teens, you’ll be under pressure to shell out big-time, so don’t pre-empt that now. A party at home or in the local park can be huge fun; traditional party games will be popular, and if you want to push the boat out a bit consider investing in a bouncy castle; or if home really isn’t a welcome prospect, a soft play centre or leisure centre will be hassle-free. Themed parties are great for this age group, and they actually make life simpler for the party organiser: a pirate theme is always popular, or sea creatures, or pick up on your child’s favourite book or TV programme. Dressing up is a big hit for this age group too. Local suggestions include: Fife Sport and Leisure Centres, Bounce n Play bouncy castles, Doodle n Splat art and craft parties and Toadstool Tea Parties.

Activities work a treat at this stage, whether you’re at home or in a church hall or at a park. For a popular and low-budget option, think about a baking party at home – weigh out all the ingredients before the children arrive, get them to mix and decorate them and then pop them in the oven to bake while you play a few party games (shortbread biscuits are easy peasy; have a range of cutters for exciting shapes). Local

entertainers that can help you out with this age group include: The Ceramic Café in Dunfermline for creative play parties, Choc’s Away for indulgent chocolate parties, or Miss Pauley’s for creative craft.

Age 10-12

ÊOlder Ê children like going out to party. To keep the costs down, encourage a smaller number of guests – think about a trip to the seaside or to an exciting adventure playground they’ve not visited before, and remember that the journey can be as much fun as the activity at the end of it. If you don’t mind spending a bit more, a trip to a climbing wall, an ice rink, a bowling rink or a go-karting centre can be wonderful fun too. Cairnie Fruit Farm, Adventure Golf Island or Bowlplex are all good bets locally.

The golden rules

ÊNever Ê have a party that lasts more than two hours ÊOver Ê rather than under invite – one or two guests probably won’t come ÊThe Ê younger the child, the fewer the guests ÊParty Ê bags - always have them, they’re hugely popular and like it or not they are expected ÊHave Ê a plan mapped out for what should happen when ÊHave Ê a few little prizes up your sleeve for impromptu games in case the entertainer is late or there’s a power cut or act of God!

Party food tips

ÊFood Ê doesn’t need to be complicated ÊIt Êdoes need to include options – many children won’t eat ham/cheese/eggs/grapes/ pizza ÊÊ Find out about allergies prior to the party and try to avoid that food stuff all round ÊDon’t Ê over supply guests with too much food. You can take more out of the fridge if required ÊPutting Ê cup cakes rather than slices of cake into party bags makes life easier

Help at hand locally Bear in mind that you really don’t have to do it all. Or any of it really these days. If your strengths lie elsewhere than in the kitchen, then commission a cake to remember. If you don’t have time to fiddle around with party bags, buy some in. You won’t regret it and you won’t be reaching for the Kalms or the glass of wine [well not before the guests leave at least] if you delegate well.

Perfect Party bags

If you are organising your own party, or

www.familiesfife.co.uk

your entertainer doesn’t include party bags, why not ease the strain further by letting someone else take care of the party bags? Susan, from the Whole Shbang, supplies fantastic party bags for any occasion at affordable prices. Bags can be made up as cups, cones, cubes or models – such as teddies, cars etc. These can then be filled with interesting bits and bobs such as purses, stationery and toys or you can go down the ever-popular sweetie route. Whatever you choose, you won’t find any of the products in the tacky aisle and your partygoers with go home with a big smile on their faces - guaranteed. 

Jane gently but firmly makes the point that our attitude to eating and to food as mothers and care givers, will directly affect our children’s eating habits for the rest of their lives. It’s a wake up call to ensure that the whole family eats better and it is all the better for having been written by a non perfectionist mum of two who just happens to be a Professor of Health Psychology at the University of Surrey. 

his is a brilliantly useful book. I read it on holiday to review it and actually enjoyed it. I found myself putting out grapes and strawberries on the table instead of the usual salty or sugary kid fayre. Later my little girl said, ‘mum we were stealing grapes when we were playing the game, but you didn’t notice.’ I thought, ‘Well done me, I have made grapes forbidden fruit and therefore all the more desirable’. It is such techniques that Jane Ogden preaches in this book. It is a must for parents of fussy eaters, those who worry about their children’s weight and those who just have a nagging sense that they could do better on the

rama classes can sometimes be like one long children’s party – lots of noise, games, laughter, activities – and the occasional cake! This term, the icing on that cake will be our year-end presentations, when each group will present a short, scripted play to their parents and friends. The youngest children will be working hard on our farm – with a bit of singing and dancing – as they try to keep Frances and Freddie Fox away from the chickens – but even foxes like singing and dancing- and they are also partial to some party food! The older children will welcome some new characters to “Storyland” – and meet some old favourites who have provided lots of fun and laughter over the years. Other groups will be preparing to go on holiday – but they have booked with “Jet Lag Tours” and everything that could go wrong...will go wrong! The children will present their plays at the end of June – come and join us NOW and be part of the fun! 
