Firstly we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and healthy 2015. Over the last few months there have been a few changes, & not just to the design. Lisa will now be working behind the scenes with our advertisers & distriubtion outlets, & I am very excited to be taking on the role as Editor. My son Thomas is also very excited to be enjoying more play dates with Evie & Jack while we are hard at work on the magazine!! Together we will ensure that our valued readers continue to enjoy a good variety of local relevent & interesting parenting news, features & articles. Bertie’s Monster Once upon a time a grandmother from Bramford called Sue was rummaging through the various stories she had scribbled and accumulated from years of writing stories and jotting down ideas. All at once she came upon a little story just ripe for the illustrating talents of her daughter, Joy, a graphic designer living in Sproughton. The two local “gals” pooled their resources and Bertie’s Monster took shape. The simple story was designed to stir the imaginations of small children. It encouraged them to add their own thoughts and develop their vivid abilities to explore the world of fantasy, something very precious in the world of a child. Gradually the story developed over months, with care and detail given to each colourful picture reflecting the reactions of a little boy faced with the sudden appearance of a monster. Bertie’s Monster is now available and – fingers crossed – will live happily ever after! (Please see our book review on p12).

Promising to be an exciting addition to the Ipswich events calendar, the Ipswich Building Society Twilight 10km and 5km road races are taking place on the evening of Friday 15 August 2015. On a flat town centre course, the partnership between Ipswich Jaffa Running Club, Ipswich Building Society, Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk New College will see an elite focused 5km race for those who can run the distance within 20 minutes (men) and 22 minutes (ladies) and a 10km mass participation road race open to all, with the unique aim of beating the sunset. Starting and finishing outside Suffolk New College, participants will pass many of Ipswich’s iconic buildings such as the Willis building, Cornhill, Ancient House and Giles Circus. Paul Winter, Chief Executive, Ipswich Building Society, commented: “As a keen runner myself I’m proud and excited that we at Ipswich Building Society are sponsoring Ipswich’s new Twilight run. Pop Chorus Mamma mia! Here I go again…

Quirky Suffolk choir Pop Chorus is introducing a unique new, family-friendly daytime group in Ipswich, with singers welcome to bring young children to rehearsals. Launched with a handful of singers in 2012 by Yula Andrews, Pop Chorus has grown to over 100 members across 3 choirs. Decidedly non-classical, they sing a variety of pop songs (from ELO to Radiohead) in glorious harmony, to professional backing tracks. Singers don’t audition or need experience – parts are taught by ear at fun, informal rehearsals, aided by recordings to practise with at home. Pop Chorus gives members the welcome opportunity to switch off and relax for a couple of hours each week, but Yula noticed (as mum to a 3 year old and 5 month old twins herself) childcare difficulties stopping some people from joining. The new infant-friendly daytime group is still an adult choir, where singers are welcome (but not obliged) to bring under school-age infants along to rehearsals, with everyone encouraged to be tolerant to any background interruptions! YOUR NAME: Cath Bright NAME, LOCATION AND NATURE OF YOUR BUSINESS: Bright Budgeting – networking marketing professional representing Utility Warehouse.

HOW LONG HAS YOUR BUSINESS BEEN RUNNING AND THE REASON WHY YOU STARTED YOUR OWN BUSINESS? Back in 2012 I had a big list of “whys” to start Bright Budgeting. After leaving my career to look after my family, I needed a challenge & finding one that would allow me to prioritise the children was difficult. I wanted financial security & the ability to treat the girls – through Bright Budgeting I have just been able to take them to Disney Paris, something I would not have been able to do before. I also wanted to prove to myself that I could do it & that I still had value as an individual, not just as a parent.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? I love the personal development & how I am pushed out of my comfort zone. It’s tough but when I succeed it’s a great feeling of achievement. I also don’t have to worry about time off when the girls are poorly, or attending the school assembly, I choose my own hours to suit my family.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU DON’T ENJOY ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? The negatives that often effect business owners such as no holiday pay, or lack of team support, don’t affect me. I benefit from what is called a “residual income” so even when I don’t work I still get the same pay cheque each month & I’m also part of a great nationwide team so there is always support. If I had to look for something, it’s that there is no one else to blame – success or failure is all down to me! That can be a great feeling but can also be less enjoyable when I haven’t put in the effort.

WHAT WAS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WERE EVER GIVEN? Just do it! There is a great clip on YouTube of Art Williams which regardless of your business, every SME owner should watch, & watch, & watch.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR YOUR BUSINESS? I’m now recruiting & expanding my team which is my next challenge. Luckily my years of managing large teams in the NHS is proving invaluable to ensure that my new team members are secure & successful in their venture.

HOW DO YOU FIT YOUR BUSINESS AROUND FAMILY LIFE? It would be impossible to do without the support of friends and family to help with childcare but mainly I manage my business in school hours or in the evening when the girls are asleep. I concentrate on term time but am prepared to sacrifice some school holiday time should the business need it. My biggest supporters are the children – I get them involved in setting targets, & we monitor how the business is doing visual on the fridge so they encourage & support me.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANY PARENTS CONSIDERING STARTING UP THEIR OWN BUSINESS? You must treat it like a business & not a hobby – it will need commitment & time but the rewards are worth it. There are no get rich quick schemes - look at it as a 3 – 5 year plan minimum, allocate your time to suit your own needs and go for it.

BACKGROUND AS TO WHY YOU STARTED OR TOOK OVER THE BUSINESS & HOW THE BUSINESS HAS DEVELOPED OVER TIME?: We started the business as my daughter came up with the idea & thought Ipswich should have it’s own stuff your own bear shop so people in & around Ipswich wouldn’t have to travel far to make their own bear or add to their bear collection. She had a good point & we were fortunate enough to open The Bear Garden a few months later. The business has grown from scratch & is now a recognised shop with many of our customers visiting regularly for gifts & for themselves. Our mobile app is proving popular & we regularly interact with the public on our social media platforms.

WHAT DOES THE BUSINESS HAVE TO OFFER FAMILIES AS A WHOLE OR INDIVIDUAL FAMILY MEMBERS? The business offers more than just its products which are primarily plush bears, animals & bear outfits; It’s an interactive retail experience & lots of families leave with fond memories. We recently had a Grandad visit with his 6 grand children & they were all having a wonderful family day out, taking lots of pictures & making the most of their time together. Other families may be popping in & then there’s the parties we host. Not only are these great fun for the party child but it also takes the strain off parents or carers as we host it all. We even offer free party invitations. We offer a fantastic service & are proud of our feedback & reviews.

WHY DID YOU FEEL IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO JOIN THE GENR8 SCHEME & WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR READERS TO SUPPORT THE SCHEME? I felt it was right to join the GenR8 scheme as, just like me & the other businesses involved, GenR8 itself is a small Ipswich based business. I think it’s important to shop local & for others who may not know the benefits to the local community, it’s a good incentive to encourage local shopping. Learning at 2 In September 2014, the Government increased the number of funded childcare places for 2 year old’s. But what do 2 year old’s get out of taking up these funded places? Heleanna Phair, Manager of Little Learners Nursery tells us what you can expect from Childcare for 2 year old’s.

At 2, focus is very much on learning through play in a carefully planned calm nurturing environment, structured formal education is not suitable for 2 year old’s as they don’t have the attention skills or understanding needed to participate in classroom style learning.

The repetitive play experiences that 2 year old children spend their time engaging in helps them make sense of the world and people around them.

Using the interests of our children we have identified that role play, construction & messy play is what our toddlers like best. Using natural resources that capture their imagination, the children use their own experiences to create high quality role

play with babies, small world people & animals.

“We have identified that role play, construction and messy play is what our toddlers like best” Like all Ofsted Registered Childcare providers, we follow The Early Years Foundation Stage. This provides a framework for practitioners to follow as a way of helping each child from birth to 5 meet their developmental milestones. At 2 the progress of children is assessed by three prime areas of learning (the two year check). These are:

1. PERSONAL SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT This area focuses on the child’s ability to make relationships, show self-confidence & manage their feelings and behaviour. Through a strong relationship with their key person at nursery, 2 year olds gain the confidence to develop their own sense of self. Friendships can be built with their peers & experience of sharing, negotiating boundaries & considering the needs of others is evident through regular attendance in an Early Years Setting.

2. PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT This area helps children to develop their coordination, control & movement. It helps them to understand the importance of physical activity & healthy diet choices. Outdoor learning is particularly important & we are lucky to have an amazing garden area.

Through effective supervision the children are able to access the outdoor classroom at any point of the day & are free to spend their time exploring the natural world we live in. The outdoor classroom doesn’t need to be clean or tidy so children have the freedom to explore mud, sand, water, digging & climbing. Our children are supported to learn through taking risk and facing challenges.

FEATURE 3. COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE As well as assessing the listening & attention ability of our children, we also assess the understanding of language & ability to speak. To meet the needs of our children speech & language is one of our key areas of focus. Little Learners has achieved Ecat standards (Every Child a Talker) – we use the Ecat monitoring forms to ensure there are areas within our environment that promote conversations between the children as well as conversations between the adults & children. Our cosy area offers the children a soft place to rest and share books with an adult as well as a den for the children to find privacy & talk amongst themselves. Through regular attendance in a childcare setting, children have daily access to singing, stories, conversations with their peers and most importantly effective role models to teach the children appropriate use of language. Group times are introduced to children when their listening & attention skills have developed and contain games & activities that promote speech, listening & understanding.

Bridge Farm Day Nursery A purpose built pre school has now opened at Bridge Farm Day Nursery providing an extra 24 spaces for children aged 0-5. Owner Dan Powick says ‘It is a relief to finally be extending as our popularity means we have to turn parents away quite often. This ensures that we can give all the parents the places they want.” The new building is still be part of Bridge Farm nursery but has it’s own kitchen, garden and office. Although the new building is for children aged 3-5 it will mean extra spaces for all 0-5 year olds.

Dan and his wife Tina started as childminders in Woodbridge 12 years ago before opening Rendlesham Day Nursery in 2005 and Bridge Farm Nursery in 2008. In 2009, Dan became one of the first men in Suffolk to achieve a level 6 Early Years Professional Status which is the gold standard for the early years.

Dress to Impress...

January always seems so dark and gloomy after the magic and sparkle of December and the festive period. However, there’s no need for our clothes to be equally dark and gloomy in the New Year. As a starting point take back all of those unwanted Christmas clothing gifts - if you don’t have a gift receipt many shops will let you take unworn items back and exchange for a credit note then look around for something fabulous to wear to get you through the rest of winter. Sales are already starting late November so there will be loads of reduced items around although by now the range of sizes will be more limited than usual. Look for a great coat - a good quality coat which you pick up in the sales is a fantastic investment piece which you will wear daily until April and for the coming autumn/winter too. Paired with a cosy knitted snood in a contrasting colour and a pair of boots again picked up in the sale. Pleated palazzo pants or a pleated midi skirt worn with a chunky knit jumper and a pair of heeled boots is a great way to look stylish but feel warm and cosy whilst winter reigns. For going out, a jumpsuit worn with heels is an excellent option as it looks fantastic - especially if you are taller than average - both now and into the spring and summer and can be dressed up or down depending on shoes/accessories etc.

A dash of colour will also lift your mood so try and wear at least a scarf in a brighter/lighter colour to lift your face and contrast nicely with your neutral coat.

Bring it on…

So the turkey’s all gone, there’s no sign of a mince pie or chocs and the trimmings are back in the loft! The kids are back at school and everyone is feeling just a little bit subdued. So now’s the time to KICK START your year. Make 2015 the year you really focus on feeling and being healthier.

Twenty minutes a day is better than nothing! Eating well for 5 days out of seven is enough to start with until it’s just a normal part of your life. Keep motivated by trying different things…

Gym… Join a gym and try working out early mornings or in your lunch hour.

Dance…There’s some brilliant dance classes in Ipswich or dance-based exercise classes.

Run… The Ipswich adult and junior parkrun are great for all abilities and they’re FREE. Swim… still one of the nation’s favourite participation sports.

Cycle…Dust off that old bike and get back in the saddle… bike the kids to school instead of driving or enjoy some of the beautiful cycle routes in Suffolk! Indoor cycling classes…try one they are excilarating.

Walk…Walk to work, to the shops, or just stride it out for 30 minutes 3 times a week.

Get the whole family on it and tell everyone you’re on a fitness drive so you support each other, and reward yourself along the way too… not with carrot cake if possible.. but with healthy treats such as a massage, some new trainers or a healthy family meal out!

Crafty Baba HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE NEW CRAFTY BABA SHOP & THE WORKSHOPS & COURSES THEY OFFER? I heard of Crafty Baba through a friend who knew that I was into all things crafty. Whilst looking for a beginners sewing course I saw another interesting looking course, Japanese Wrapping. WAS THE SHOP EASY TO FIND? (PARKING NEAR?) The Crafty Baba shop is very easy to find just along St.Peters Street. There are plenty of car parks available within easy walking distance, IS THE COURSE ONE YOU CAN ATTEND ON YOUR OWN OR DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE BETTER TO GO WITH FRIENDS OR FAMILY? I decided to attend the course on my own for a bit of me time but a few others who attended the course were with a friend or family member. WHAT DID YOU LEARN/ CREATE ON THE COURSE? We chose two different fabrics which would end up to be our wraps and learnt how to sew each in a different way. DID YOU HAVE TO TAKE ANYTHING ALONG OR WERE ALL THE COURSE MATERIALS PROVIDED? I didn’t take any of my own materials with me just a pen and a note pad but at the end of the course we were given a handout to take home with clear instructions on how to make our own wraps at home. HOW LONG WAS THE COURSE? The course was about five hours with a break for lunch.

WAS IT GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY? I felt that the course was great value for money. Small class size, all materials and sewing machine provided topped off with great help and advice. WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE JAPANESE PRESENT WRAPPING COURSE? The most enjoyable part of the course was learning how easy the wrap is to make once you know how. The next most enjoyable part was returning home and showing my children how some of their presents will be wrapped this Christmas. WAS THERE ANYTHING YOU DIDN’T ENJOY ? No. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO OTHERS? Definitely. I also found that Crafty Baba have gift vouchers available, so I shall be popping those on my birthday wish list!

The reasonable price and after having our free trial we loved the lesson content and Alfie responded well to the teachers which meant he felt comfortable with them. WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GAIN FOR YOU BY ATTENDING PUDDLE DUCK SWIMMING CLASSES ? Quality time with Alfie and something fun to do together. I also really wanted Alfie to be comfortable in the water which I feel is a really valuable life skill. I love swimming, diving and aquatic life is a real passion of mine so as a family this is something we would like to do together and share with Alfie as he gets older. DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE ACHIEVED THIS? 100%. I can’t believe the confidence Alfie has in the water, he is constantly trying to push off me and go it alone. The excitement he shows when I tell him we are swimming let alone when we arrive at the pool side is tremendous. As a family it fills us with absolute pride when we see all the skills and new things he learns each week. What he has achieved since attending classes is so amazing to us. We are always genuinely gutted when we cannot attend a class due to illness or other things as it is the highlight of our week. HOW OFTEN AND HOW LONG ARE THE SESSIONS / COURSE YOU HAVE COMPLETED? We have a lesson once a week for half an hour. There are 3 terms a year similar to the schools and we have gaps to accommodate half terms and holiday periods. WERE THE CLASSES GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY? They absolutely are and when I did research I believe they were one of the most reasonable in the area. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE CLASSES? The new skills we learn each week and seeing my little boy achieve amazing things that I never thought possible at his age. WHAT DO YOU FEEL HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST BENEFITS OF ATTENDING THESE SWIMMING CLASSES? Alfie’s confidence. Not only in the water but socially as he is normally quite a stand offish baby and wont generally go to others but this has improved and I believe Puddle Ducks has had a big part to play in this. Some of the signals and instructions we give them transfer to home life such as making him aware that he needs to ‘turn turn turn’ to get to certain things. This helped with so many situations and again this is all down to what we learn with Puddle Ducks.

WAS THERE BEEN ANYTHING YOU DIDN’T ENJOY ABOUT THE SWIMMING CLASSES? The only thing I don’t enjoy are the gaps we have for holidays as we miss our classes greatly. However even then there are extra lessons sometimes added in the breaks to fill the void. If I had my way we would have lessons every week of every month and probably more than once a week.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE CONSIDERING BOOKING SWIMMING LESSONS FOR THEIR FAMILY? DO IT! The classes are such fun and you will be amazed at what your little one will learn and gain from the class. The time together is so enjoyable and there is nothing more magical than watching your babe swim under water and on the surface unaided. MAGIC!

Bertie’s Monster I think I probably know this book off by heart now - my 2 year old boy just loves it, and makes me read it al least 3 times every night before bed!! It’s fair to say that Bertie’s Monster is now one of his favourites. Lets be honest - what more can a little boy ask for than a book about a big green monster... The story is fun and engaging, we enjoy counting teeth and talking about colours, which is great at this age. The illustrations are also fantastic, and really help capture the imagination.

Overall a great little book.

Girl power is about to take the UK by storm again A new Sport England campaign aimed at inspiring more women to take part in sport is being launched in January. ‘This Girl Can’ campaign is a celebration of the active women who are doing their thing no matter how they do it, how they look or even how sweaty they get. It’s a national campaign developed by Sport England and a wide range of partnership organisations, to inspire more women and girls to wiggle, jiggle, move and prove that judgement is a barrier that can be overcome. So if you feel inspired to give something a go this year; maybe a new activity or something you haven’t done for a while, here’s just a flavour of the opportunities for women to get active in Suffolk…

Discover nature together at RSPB Minsmere There may still be a winter chill in the air, but the first signs of spring will be seen by early February, so why not wrap up warm and explore your local nature reserves, like RSPB Minsmere, near Westleton. You don’t need to be an expert to spot nature’s first spring awakenings: snowdrops emerging valiantly through frozen soil, robins and blackbirds singing from high vantage points, or maybe a clump of frogspawn in a sheltered pond. Become a Farmer at Easton Farm Park Enjoy half price entry during the February half term at Easton Farm Park. It is a magical time of year on the farm as the first lambs start to appear, the first kid goats pop out and the weather (hopefully) starts to give a hint of spring. Museums fun in Ipswich Ipswich Museum and Christchurch Mansion are the places for families to go to mix fun with learning. Regular workshops and fun sessions give youngsters the chance to find out more about our fabulous collections and support what they learn at school. They can make Anglo-Saxon jewellery, explore an Egyptian tomb, take part in art and print challenges, make gifts and find out more about what life was like in times gone by. They can also discover what brought Rosie the Rhino and Wool-I-Am the life-size mammoth to Ipswich. Entry to both venues is free but there are charges for workshops.

Coming up: There are PRINTING WORKSHOPS at the Mansion on 19th and 20th February and a chance to “meet” the famous artist JOHN CONSTABLE on 20th February. Kids can also go along with dad to make Mother’s Day gifts on 7th March.
