What’s in this issue Have you ever thought about having solar panels? I have but I’ve never got round to doing anything about it but new tariffs introduced by the Government in April 2010 mean that solar panels are now a profitable investment (as you get paid for all the electricity you generate), so if you have been considering this eco move, now is definitely the time to do it as the tariffs are due to fall for installations after March 2012 - see page 11 for more on this. Do read our article on the safety of mobile phones on page 9 - it’s eye opening. And page 13 has some great tips and new products for all those sleep deprived parents out there! There’s so much going on at Easter as well, masses of Easter egg hunts and trails and lots, lots more you’ll find it all in the what’s on section as usual.

News and Views New Soft Play Parties

Dad Carl Introduces Monkey to Little Ones in Music Classes

My Little Princess Parties have recently launched soft play parties that are ideal for babies and toddlers. My Little Princess can bring all of it’s soft play to you, whether you want your party at home or at your local venue. You can also hire the Soft Play for Christenings, Weddings, in Nurseries and even at Corporate events. If you would like to know more you can give My Little Princess a call on 01428 609340 or visit www.mylittleprincessparties.co.uk

Monkey Music Woking is the first franchise of parent company Monkey Music to engage a male consultant to teach music to pre-school children. The franchise, owned by Alice Crabb, has taken on Carl Carew, an actor with considerable musical talent, to give classes to children aged 3 months to 4 years in Horsell and St Johns. Mr Carew, a stay-at-home Dad, first encountered Monkey Music when he started classes with his daughter aged a few months and recognised the importance of musical stimulation in her development. When the opportunity arose to teach, he felt that it would combine two of his passions, his acting skills with musical development for young children. The importance of a father’s active involvement in bringing up children is well-documented and evidence suggests that it helps them with their learning, self-confidence and social skills as they grow up. The employment of a male teacher endorses this, adding an extra dimension to the Monkey Music Woking franchise.

Soft Play @ My Little Princess, Grayshott My Little Princess now offers soft play at its party room on Applegarth Farm, Headley Road, Grayshott. Perfect for Under 4’s, the soft play is available Monday - Friday 9.30am-4.30pm. It only costs £3 (including a fee cup of tea or coffee).

Make sure your blinds are safe

“I was delighted that Carl was interested in becoming a teacher for me and am very impressed at his understanding of the ethos behind Monkey Music,” said Alice “We are all born with a musical ability, in fact it is one of the first ways we learn how to communicate, and Monkey Music classes play a crucial part in drawing out and honing that ability.” Further classes are run by Monkey Music Woking throughout the week in Ottershaw, Pyrford, Chertsey and Byfleet. For more information, please contact Alice Crabb on 01932 429240 or alice.crabb@monkeymusic.co.uk. Monkey Music Guildford runs classes in Farnham, Guildford, Cranleigh and Godalming - please call Abi on 01932 828868.

In 2010 five children died by being strangled by the loop of a blind cord. Last October The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) expanded it’s national awareness raising campaign inviting members of the public to request a free “Make it Safe” cleat pack to tie blind cords up safely. To date, about 6,000 members of the public have requested packs. RoSPA is now inviting all organisations that have an interest in the welfare of young children to apply for a free share of more than 50,000 Make It Safe bundles. Each organisation can have up to 500 (in multiples of 100) of the packs, which consist of: an advice leaflet, a cleat (to tie cords up safely), a warning tag and fixing instructions for the cleat. Organisations can request packs by emailing Jane Trobridge: jtrobridge@rospa.com. Members of the public can still apply for a free pack by visiting: www.rospa.com/about/currentcampaigns/blindcords/apply

Theatrebugs comes to Surrey! Theatrebugs has been spreading the drama, music and dance magic around South West London since 2005 and now, they are proud to launch their second franchise in Guildford. “I am so excited to finally bring Theatrebugs to Surrey” says Hannah Mason “Having worked with Theatrebugs in London for the last six months I have seen how much fun the children have.” Theatrebugs launches on April 11th with a three day Easter course at venues up and down the county. They will also run regular classes in nurseries and schools, after schools and under 5’s clubs as well as parties and private classes. “It’s fantastic as there’s already been a great deal of interest from local mums who have contacted Bug HQ to find out when workshops will be running!” says Hannah. “The most important thing is that the children enjoy every minute. The course is filled with singing, dancing, acting, dressing up, arts and crafts and lots and lots of fantastic games; never a dull moment! Courses run in Chiddingfold, Frensham, Godalming, Ripley and Worplesdon and are suitable for 3½ year olds to 8 year olds - for dates and times please see the listing in Drama Workshops on page 24 or contact Hannah Mason on hannahmason@theatrebugs.co.uk or 01428 606937/07971 004134. www.theatrebugs.co.uk

I believe there should be no compromise when it comes to your family and I will only recommend nannies I have personally interviewed, fully vetted and reference checked and would be happy to employ to look after my family.”

Sign up to Childcare Vouchers before 6th April! You can opt to have part of your salary paid in childcare vouchers if you work and your employer is signed up to a scheme. You save money because you don’t pay National Insurance or tax on the childcare vouchers. These vouchers can be used to pay for nurseries, childminders, nannies as well as holiday camps and some children’s activity classes – they have to be registered with Ofsted or an equivalent authority as well as being registered to accept childcare vouchers so if you are unsure whether you can pay for something in vouchers just ask the organisation or individual. Julian Foster, managing director of leading childcare voucher provider Computershare Voucher Services says “One change the Government is making is the level of tax relief on childcare vouchers for higher (40%) and additional (50%) rate tax-payers who sign up to the scheme after 5 April. New entrants that sign up after this date won’t be able to exchange as much of their salary for vouchers so will see their potential savings drop, so if you are a higher or additional rate tax-payer make sure you sign up before 6 April 2011 to get maximum benefit”. The changes only apply to parents who join a scheme on or after 6th April, so if you are already registered the changes won’t affect you.

Surrey schools get into the Olympic spirit School children from across the county are gearing up to get a taste of Olympic victory with the P&G Surrey School Games. Organised by Surrey County Council and partners, the School Games will be starting on 15 March and involve up to 4,000 children competing in over 30 events, providing an opportunity for young people from across the county to get active and compete in a range of Olympic and non-Olympic sports. While most of the events are at secondary level, Year 5 & 6 will compete in finals such as Athletics, Netball and Cricket. The School Games will bring together all the Surrey County finals into one comprehensive programme that is set to raise the quality and profile of sporting competitions in Surrey. This will also ensure that Surrey school kids are well placed to compete for national titles in 2012 at the National School Games.

Mums in Business A local Surrey Mum has recently launched her new company “Aurevoir Cleavage” - a new high-quality product designed to cover-up cleavage. She says “most women will have clothing in their wardrobes that is a little too low cut and daring to wear! This clothing also usually doesn’t wear well with camisoles or undergarments, which can add bulk or heat”. Au Revoir Cleavage is a great new solution - it’s a pretty hand-finished, lined strip of elegant fabric which can be worn with all types of low cut dresses, shirts, tops and evening gowns or a low cut, backless dress. It can be easily removed or added, depending on your mood or environment – professional or party!” The item comes supplied with skin-safe fashion tape which can be attached to skin, underwear or clothing, It’s also strong enough to hold from day into night and beyond and it can be used again and again. Au Revoir Cleavage comes in elegant Lace and Satin fabric styles and retails at just £12.99 for a pack of 2. Visit www.aurevoircleavage.co.uk

The company has been started by two local mums, Emma Cunningham and Emily Fowler. The girls, having stepped out of careers in fashion and illustration to have children, were keen to use their experience and skills to inspire others to be creative. See What I Made's goal is to 'unlock creativity' and children's parties are certainly a great place to start. "We love working with children, nothing is impossible to them and it is incredibly satisfying for us to see how delighted they are when they've made a toy or bag or something they can wear". See What I Made will come to the venue of your party and spend a creative hour and a half with your children. For more information visit www.seewhatimade.net or call 07597874008 or 07879442025.

The risks to children’s health from WIFI and mobile phones By Patty Hemingway Many of you will have heard that mobile phones may carry health risks. You probably also know that children are at an even greater risk than adults. You may wonder why, if that is the case, they do not come with a healthy warning, like cigarettes? Dr Devra Davis, environmental and public health specialist, research scientist and grandmother, could not believe this, but what she found out alarmed her so much that she wrote a book, Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide It, and How to Protect Your family, 2010. She writes that, “Contrary to the firmly held beliefs of many respected authorities, invisible radio frequency radiation can alter living cells and create the same types of damage that we know increase the risk of cancer and neurological disease. Neither the danger nor the safety of cell phones is yet certain. How we manage that uncertainty could avert a global public health catastrophe... children are growing up in a sea of radio frequency radiation that did not exist even five years ago.” My own concerns about cell phone radiation and other forms of digital pulsed microwave radiation had been aroused a few years ago when I began seeing an increasing number of children showing symptoms after exposure to mobile phones, mast radiation or wireless radiation. These included hyperactive behaviour which reverted to normal when the children were away from the irradiated environment, skin rashes and eczemas that did not improve with treatment, night terrors and mood swings, lowered immunity in previously healthy children, and sudden nose-bleeds. A major concern about mobile phones has always been that radiation can penetrate deep into a child’s skull because it is so much thinner and smaller than an adult’s. Standards for phones are set for a large, thick-skulled, man, although half of the world’s four billion cell phones are used by people under twenty. The SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) printed on the box relates simply to the phone’s capacity to heat tissue, as manufacturers and standard setters initially refused to believe that there could be any other detrimental effect from radio frequency radiation. This is strange as our bodies run on

electrical currents, which are easily disrupted by pulsed frequencies, as has been demonstrated in a study by Dr Magda Havas and colleagues, showing heart arrhythmias triggered by DECT (cordless) phones. (http://www. youtube.com/watch?v=_EI9fZX4iww). In the digital age this poses new health risks depending on a person’s susceptibility, the density and intensity of the radiation, and the length of time they are exposed to it. Children are certainly more susceptible because they are still growing, and their neural circuitry will not be fully formed until they reach their early twenties. Until then, they need protection from anything that could interfere with their brain’s development.

Health What can you do to protect yourself and your family

»» Never carry a live mobile phone next to your body, and always use a headset.

»» Text rather than call and keep calls short. »» Cordless phones are just as bad, so don’t sleep next to or above the base station.

»» Replace wireless equipment with non-wireless. »» Change to a low-radiation or analogue baby monitor. »» Turn all wireless equipment off at night, in the car, and when near pregnant women, or children.

»» Go to www.familiessurreywest.co.uk/radiation for more

information, including a round up of what’s worth reading and watching with links to relevant sites.

»» Go to www.familliessurreywest.co.uk/radiation for details on how to create a safe zone - away from EMR radiation

In France, this research has led to the decision to ban children in primary school from using mobile phones, and discouraging mobile phone advertising aimed at children. They are also removing wireless communication systems from public places such as libraries, and hospitals, after workers complained of feeling ill at work. The Bioinitiative Report in 2007 was the work of a group of eminent, international scientists, who examined existing research into the health effects of electromagnetic radiation, and especially it’s impact on the immune system, behaviour, childhood cancers, breast cancer, and brain tumours. This epic work concluded that the safety standards for exposure need to be revised downwards. Most of the research in to the health effects of mobile phones and phone masts, which is sponsored by the telecoms industry, has found no effect on human health, but studies carried out by independent scientists almost always find a physiological effect. However, few researchers look specifically at the effects of mobile phone radiation on children, even when there is evidence that exposure to carcinogens in young people come with more serious risks than for adults. Significantly, every study which has looked at brain tumour risks over ten years of use, or longer, has found an increased risk of cancer. Patty Hemingway (RMANM) is a family homeopath, with a special interest in electromagnetic radiation sickness www.pattyhemingway. com

hen you’re buying new furniture and products for your home, have you ever thought about visiting a reuse organisation?

Buying reusable furniture and kitchen appliances is great value, good for the environment and you might just find a hidden treasure. The Surrey Reuse Network offers a wide range of good quality items at affordable prices. Made up of a group of six charities, the network aims to find new homes for donated furniture and kitchen appliances, as well as offering training and employment opportunities and helping local families in need.

Why buy from a local reuse showroom? You’ll find everything you need to make a house a home:

»»

Fantastic savings – whether you buy a modern piece of flat pack furniture or a 100-year-old solid wood piece, you’ll be getting a bargain.

»»

»»

Great quality – whether modern or old the items for sale are checked for quality and safety.

ince April 2010 a government scheme to encourage solar panel installation means that families can actually make money from producing electricity from solar panels!

Solar panels have been popping up on UK roofs for the last 30 years. Environmentally conscious people, aware of the need to stop using fossil fuels (ie coal), have been keen to use this free, alternative source of electricity. There have even been grants to cover a portion of the installation costs. The phrase ‘microgeneration of electricity’ refers to electricity produced on your own roof top. The good news is that for every unit of electricity you make from your solar panels, the government will currently pay you 41.3p. What’s more, this is paid to you even when you use the electricity at home! The introduction of the ‘feed-in tariff’ in April 2010 has made this green technology a profitable investment. This unit rate of 41.3p will be paid for a guaranteed period of twenty-five years from installation and is index-linked to inflation. But these rates won’t last for ever: they are due to fall for installations completed after March 2012.

COSTS AND BENEFITS An average household typically uses about 3,300 kWh (units) a year. At 13p per unit this costs £429. A typical installation for a family house costs around £9,000 and will provide approximately 2,000 units please tickas as please please tick as tick (or kWh) of electricity each year, givingappropriate you an appropriate appropriate income of over £800 plus about £200 savings on your electricity bill. Larger systems provide even greater returns due to the efficiencies of scale. The feed-in tariff is a tax-free payment. Furthermore the value of the property is likely to increase because of the built-in income stream.

How do I find a good supplier?

An initial meeting normally takes about one hour to discuss all the homeowner’s queries and to measure and assess the intended location for the panels. From the quotation to the installation can be as little as three weeks. The installation process is relatively simple, with the majority of the work being done on the roof and in the loft space. A team of specialist engineers can complete a typical installation in one day. One cable is run from the ‘inverter’ (which converts the electricity to the normal domestic supply of 230v) in the loft to the main consumer unit (fuse box) within the property.

roof to generate power. A west-facing roof can generate 80% of the power of a due southfacing roof.

• The panels will generate power all year-round,

including overcast winter days. Obviously the system will be most productive during periods of bright sunshine.

If you are considering the installation of solar panels, it would be wise to look for a company that is registered on the MCS scheme and with REAL (for added customer support). These registers have been set up to maintain consistency and quality in this growing industry. Thanks to Kieran Pye of Fusion Green Energy for contributing this article. Fusion Green Energy has been trading for five years and is a NICEIC MCS and REAL accredited installer of photovoltaic systems for domestic and commercial properties. The company only uses MCS accredited products and can provide information and advice on the suitability of your property for solar power. They also provide insurance-backed warranties for all installations and they cover the whole of South East England. Visit their website at www.solar-panels4u.co.uk or call 0800 158 8181.

Sweet Dreams Helping your little one to sleep

Y

oung baby or toddler, sleep problems are a common issue for many parents. But did you know that there is a formula for having babies sleep through from as early as six weeks of age?

‘There are a whole host of other common situations parents find themselves in from when their baby/ toddler needs to be rocked to sleep, or needs them in the room to go to sleep.’

Sleep consultant Katie Wilson from Surrey based company Sweet Dreams is inundated with sleepdeprived parents all desperate for help.

Katie believes sleep training ought to begin from newborn but any child can be taught to sleep with patience and consistency. And having worked with many families over the years, her theory that all babies can sleep through from an early age has been proved time and time again with babies sleeping through from as early as six weeks old.

Katie said, ‘The majority of them are so exhausted they’re simply not enjoying parenthood. But there are ways to help them and put sleep for their little ones (and ultimately themselves) back on track.’ Claire Summers, age 40, from Godalming commented, ‘I recovered from Trudie’s birth and the aftermath it brought quite quickly. I got to grips with breast-feeding, and thought it was all going well, until she was three weeks old. By the time I had fed, winded and changed her, I was just getting back to sleep again when she would wake for another feed. In the end I found myself dropping off to sleep with her in bed feeding.’ Katie said, ‘When Claire called me about her situation, I think the biggest help was knowing that there were so many other mums in the same boat. At Sweet Dreams we are asked for advice on feeding all the time as it can often lead to one of the most frequent of all sleep issues: when baby needs breast or bottle to get them to sleep at night.

She said, ‘The key to understanding how this works is knowing that all I’m helping parents do is to show them how to help their baby learn to separate the need for sleep from the need for food. All you need to remember is that sleep is a skill that can be learned. It is not down to luck or simply having an easy baby. But it is down to helping your new baby start to learn this skill from day one. And surely any parent can try that?’ With friendly help and expert advice, sleep needn’t be an issue for you or your little one. Call the Sweet Dreams Sleep Consultancy and let Emma 07413 335612 or Katie 07766 914303 put your mind at rest. Or for more information email consultsweetdreams@gmail.com

Sweet Dreams’ top tips for sleep: 1) Always put baby down with his/her eyes open. 2) Swaddle your baby. 3) Establish a bath/bottle/breast/bed routine as soon as possible. 4) When you have put baby down, turn out the light and shut the bedroom door. 5) Always make sure the nursery is at the correct temperature and that baby is not in danger of overheating or being too cold.

New CDs to help sleep

Health Visitor, Val Clews and Therapist, Anna Rowe have produced some unique CDs to help parents. One of their latest CDs is 'Sleep sleep sleep Now for babies'. The CD can be played when babies go to sleep and during night-time feeds. It captures familiar and new sounds that baby now hears, including a blend of ambient music accompanied by a resting, rhythmic

heartbeat and soft, soothing 'Shhhhh' sound to relax baby - acting as a natural lullaby. Val and Anna say regular use of the CD acts as a familiar cue which will trigger babies' calming reflexes helping them to fall asleep. There are also 'Sleep sleep sleep Now' CD's for toddler/children and adults which can be bought or downloaded from the internet. 'Sleep sleep sleep Now’ (baby/child/ adult) are £12.99 (rrp) each. www.theshhhhhcompany.com

Independent School Open Days and News ISL Surrey International Baccalaureate (IB) Information Evening Tuesday 22 March To launch its Middle Years Programme (MYP), the International School of London (ISL) Surrey campus will host an IB Information Evening on Tuesday 22 March at 7.30pm at the School on Old Woking Road, Woking. Building on the academic strength of its primary school, ISL Surrey will begin offering the MYP in September 2011 for students aged 11 and 12 (years 7 and 8 in the British system or grades 6 and 7 in the American system), growing the programme towards the full IB Diploma in 2014. Inaugural Year Bursaries are available for qualified local students. Featured at the IB Information Evening will be MYP Coordinator Maria Bailey explaining the Programme, and ISL Academic Director

Sergio Pawel, speaking about the IB Diploma and its acceptance by UK and international universities. In other news, the School recently received an ‘Outstanding’ OFSTED report for its nursery, placing it in the upper 10% of schools in the UK. Unusually, the nursery was awarded outstanding ratings in every aspect of the report. Inspectors noted: “The overall quality of the provision is outstanding. The exceptionally positive and motivated approach of staff, and their commitment to promoting children’s learning and meeting their individual needs is a key strength of the provision.... Children are exceptionally happy, settled and well behaved.”

Girls at St Teresa’s Prep School in Effingham are now enjoying tranquillity and wellbeing lessons as part of their curriculum! “St Teresa’s is already an extremely happy school” says Headmistress, Mary Arnal, but even after just a few weeks, my staff are noticing a significant difference in the girls’ attention spans after a short session of reflection and deep breathing before each lesson. Focussing minds increases confidence and confident children learn better. The idea dates back thousands of years to ancient philosophies - but the girls just think it is fun! They are really enjoying learning these interesting techniques”! www.stteresasschool.com

ISL Surrey is an independent coeducational day school for students aged 2 through 12 which offers small class sizes for personalised learning as well as the provision of foreign language literacy from an early age. For more information on the IB Information evening or the school’s outstanding nursery, contact the school directly on +44 (0)1483 750 409 or via email: admissions@islsurrey.com.
