September 2014

Hi there everyone,

Inside this Month:

I They say happiness is found in the little things of life.

Julie Andrews sings lists of things that made her happy, kittens, apple strudel, snowflakes and so it goes.......

Health News - p6

For me happiness probably mean’s my kids and grandkids. I have 8 of them, 7 boys and 1 girl, Megan, she is the little one we have been featuring on the cover, cute, gentle, every bit a girl – and she costs me a fortune...... My own kids, all grown up, are great company to me now. They all seem to be content, and doing well in their lives. That makes me, as a parent happy. As I look back on my own summer with the family, all in good health, I remember the little things like, catching crabs, having picnics and of course when it was especially hot, water fights!!!! I gave as good as I got, I may be older, but I am definitely not over the hill. So, what did you enjoy about the summer, it’s nearly over, the kids are back to school, we would love you to share your summer with us, email us at admin@babyfacemarketing.co.uk. We will feature your letters next month.

Womens Beauty - p9

So summer over, what have we in store for you this month. We will be comparing the supermarkets over the next few months with our shopping basket. Lots of everyday items compared between, Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s. Let’s see who really is the cheapest. Let us know if you would like some other things added to the list. Afternoon tea, who doesn’t like it? We find out how to make your own, or how much would you expect to pay if you are eating out. Health, fashion, beauty and lots more, so get reading and enjoy!

Buttercrane and Newry City SureStart launch new Services for Mums Buttercrane have made a major investment in their services for mothers of young children in collaboration with local early year’s experts in Newry City Sure Start. Buttercrane consulted with early years experts at Newry City Sure Start and surveyed hundreds of customers to access what was important to young mums and breastfeeding mothers as part of an £100k+ upgrade of their Bathroom facilities and Mother and Baby room. Centre manager Peter Murray commented: “As a large percentage of our customers are parents and families, we want to provide a comfortable and stress free experience during their visit to Buttercrane. We have invested in our services to provide high quality facilities for mums to feed, change, warm bottles and food for their babies and to entertain siblings while they do so.

“I believe, with the upgrade to both the washrooms and Mother and Baby room we have created facilities of the very highest quality - I’d even suggest, the best to be found in any shopping centre in Ireland.” Anne Rice Project Manager said she was delighted that she and her colleague Adele Toal were asked to assist with the refurbishment in an advisory role. “Parenting is one of the most rewarding yet challenging roles we can take on. It is great such a prominent business in the city recognises this and is willing to make an investment and make

this role a little bit easier when out and about shopping with young children” “We are delighted to work with Newry City SureStart in this project to deliver significantly improved services and we’ve been delighted at the feedback of customers since the Mother and Baby room opened last week,” Peter added. RE-think you lunchtime sarnie The perfect protein to carb ratio is 1:1 to avoid an afternoon slump (foods like pasta, potatoes and bread trigger serotonin production and will make you feel sleepy) a chicken sandwich is a 2:1 ratio, so go for the open option with one slice of wholemeal sourdough bread and add more chicken and salad for a 1:1 ration

Work it out. High intensity Intensity training (HIT) is the most effective way to get fit and burn fat. Tabata is the ultimate HIT – exercise as hard as you can for 20 sec bursts with a break of ten secs between each for a period of four mins. It can be anything from running to swimming. After warming up, perform a series of jumping jacks, burpees, jumping lunges and sprinting on the spot. Or, try the Tabata DVD, £14.78, amazon.co.uk

3

Spice it up!! Sprinkle a little cinnamon on porridge or grate nutmeg onto cauliflower cheese. The antibacterial properties of cinnamon help fight viruses, while adding nutmeg to soups and stews can sharpen the mind- the active ingredient myristicin is said to improve memory.

4

Trim 50,000 calories from your diet Simply replace one drink (such as a can of fizzy pop, a latte or a glass of wine) with water every day and you could cut up to 50,000 calories a year. That’s a 14 pound weight loss over 12 months.

5

Go nuts for coconuts. The latest super food can lead to clear skin, luscious locks and a healthy bank balance! Dietary wise, coconut oil has been proven to help aid weight loss due to its healthy sat fats, which are converted into energy and help stimulate metabolism, rather than being stored as fat in the body. It can also be used as

a moisturiser, cleanser and hair mask for a natural beauty regime. Try Groovy Virgin coconut Oil £6. Tesco.

6

Get some green time. Workers who eat lunch in the park are more upbeat about their job than those who munch at their desk. And the five minutes of exercise in a green space gives a boost to mental health, say researchers. So, take a stroll through the park before going back to work.

7

Stand up Every hour you sit reduces your lifespan by 22 minutes as it raises insulin levels, increasing the risk of long-term conditions, such as diabetes. Fortunately, standing for a few mins an hour counteracts this – so get on our feet when using the phone.

Health changes to make today. 12 16 19 13 17 14 Follow our oh-so simple ways to boost your health and well-being......

8 9

Have a mole check. Do a DIY exam by getting your partner to photograph your moles every six months and report changes in size, shape or colour to your GP. This is recommended by themoleclinic.co.uk Head to Iceland. Frozen veg often contain higher levels of vitamins and cancerfighting antioxidants than fresh produce, which may have been in storage for a month, then sat in your fridge for days losing nutrients. By contrast, frozen fruit and veg are chilled soon after harvest. Or, add a handful of frozen chopped spinach pods (£1.50 Sainsbury) to casseroles, quiches, soups, curries and bakes – each block is equivalent to half-a-bag of fresh leaves.

10

Go barefoot Walking without shoes on for 10-20 mins a day can strengthen the muscles in our feet and iron out any pains in your ankles, feet, hips and back. So, slip those heels off and start walking.

11

Forget your tooth paste! Dry, brushing your teeth during the day can help remove plaque and stop tartar building up. If your teeth feel rough to your tongue, then it’s time to dry brush. Using just water, hold the bristles at a 45 degree angle and brush.

Become a flexitarian. Research by YouGov shows that a quarter of us are cutting down the amount of red meat we consume, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease and make weight maintenance easier. Instead fill up on lentils, beans, tofu and eggs and you’ll still get plenty of protein while saving money on our food bill!! A University of Oxford study found that vegetarians had a 32% lower risk of experiencing heart disease. Embrace the avocado. It’s a power-house of green goodness and a new study has found that eating half an avocado at lunch can slash 4pm hunger pangs by 40%. Pair with boiled eggs for the perfect protein and mono-saturated fat lunch combo.

Know your kale from your carrots. Can’t decide on broccoli or spinach? Brie or Camembert? A handy new Google tool can help. Simply type two foods into the search engine, along with ‘compare’ or ‘versus’ (for example ‘compare broccoli and spinach’) and it will bring up a table of nutritional information for 100g of each food.

15

Take this............ Krill oil (£15.95) found at good health shops, are the new super supplement, as it has a powerful antiwww.familiesfirst-uk.com

inflammatory action. This cocktail of vitamins will help to combat fatigue and improve energy, plus it’ll reduce PMS symptoms, including cramping, breast tenderness and mood swings.

Have a no drink day Not drinking on three consecutive days is the best thing you can do, say liver specialists. It slashes your weekly unit intake; reduces the risk of alcohol-related health risks, flags up any dependency issues and gives your liver a chance to rest. Try to make every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday dry! Finish your meal with kiwi fruit. A recent study found that kiwi fruit aids digestion reduces the feeling of over fullness and eases bloating because it contains actinidin, a compound that helps digest proteins found in red meat, dairy and fish.

18

Repel stress. Juggling holidays, school breaks and work can leave us stressed, say health experts. So support your body with supplements designed to buffer burn-out. CoEnzyme Q-10 and B vitamins are among

the most crucial and added vitamin C helps to prevent damage from the sun’s rays. Try Inner Me Energise Me, £15 from Holland Barrett.

Treat your feet. Have a medical pedicure. Unlike a regular pedicure a professional podiatrist addresses all aspects of foot health and it’s performed on a dry foot to ensure longlasting results.

Here is a guide to what you can do at home. • File hard skin before you bathe using a foot file, rather than a grating device. • Smooth toenails straight across with a glass file, rather than an emery board. • Use a square block buffer to get rid of discolouration, followed by a glossing buffer to create a glass like shine. • Soak feet in warm water and use a sea salt scrub in olive oil to exfoliate away dead skin • Finally, rub in lots of moisturiser.

Your map to a Better back. Backache costs the NHS over £1 billion a year and 90% of us will suffer from it as some point. Here’s what can go wrong, and how to treat it when it does. WHIPLASH When your head is jolted suddenly, the neck and upper back may be injured, leading to pain, stiffness and headaches. CAUSES; Car accidents are the most common, but a fall or a blow to the head will trigger it, too. TREATMENT; If your neck still hurts a month after the injury, see your doctor . You may need to combine painkillers ibuprofen and paracetamol can be safely taken together to provide greater pain relief.

SLIPPED DISC This is where cartilage between the vertebrae splits and the gel inside leaks. Pressure is then put on the sciatic nerve, leading to numbness/tingling in the legs and pain in the lower back. CAUSES; Age and injury can be factors, with 30 to 50 year olds most at risk. TREATMENT; If the pain is severe your doctor may prescribe diazepam to relax the muscles, physiotherapy and in rare cases surgery. It’s important to stay active if you have a slipped disc gentle exercise like walking and swimming actually relieves pain and helps your back to heal.

SCIATICA Any kind of pain affecting the sciatic nerve (the long nerve that runs from the back of your pelvis to your feet). CAUSES; A slipped disc or muscle injury can both be triggers, but sometimes there’s no obvious source

4 STEPS... TOWARD GOOD POSTURE

You can improve your posture—and head off back pain—by practicing some imagery and a few easy exercises. • 1

Imagery. Think of a straight line passing through your body from ceiling to floor (your ears, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles should be even and line up vertically). Now imagine that a strong cord attached to your breastbone is pulling your chest and rib cage upward, making you taller. Try to hold your pelvis level — don’t allow the lower back to sway. Think of stretching your head toward the ceiling, increasing the space between your rib cage and pelvis. Picture yourself as a ballerina or ice skater rather than a soldier at attention.

• 2

Shoulder blade squeeze. Sit up straight in a chair with your hands resting on your thighs. Keep your shoulders down and your chin level. Slowly draw your shoulders back and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Hold for a count of five; relax. Repeat three or four times.

• 3

Upper-body stretch. Stand facing a corner with your arms raised, hands flat against the walls, elbows at shoulder height. Place one foot ahead of the other. Bending your forward knee, exhale as you lean your body toward the corner. Keep your back straight and your chest and head up. You should feel a nice stretch across your chest. Hold this position for 20–30 seconds. Relax.

• 4

Arm-across-chest stretch. Raise your right arm to shoulder level in front of you and bend the arm at the elbow, keeping the forearm parallel to the floor. Grasp the right elbow with your left hand and gently pull it across your chest so that you feel a stretch in the upper arm and shoulder on the right side. Hold for 20 seconds; relax both arms. Repeat to the other side. Repeat three times on each side. Practice these imagery and posture exercises throughout the day. You might try to find a good trigger to help you remember, such as doing one or more of them when you get up from your desk, or right before scheduled breaks and lunch. Soon it will become a habit.

TREATMENT; Try Painkillers or apply a hot water bottle or pack of frozen peas. If your pain lasts longer than six weeks, affects your sleep or is accompanied by weight loss, visit your GP

NECK STRAIN This happens when the soft tissue or muscles in the neck or upper back are damaged. CAUSES; Poor posture, carrying a heavy shoulder bag, or tension in the neck caused by stress. TREATMENT; This type of pain usually heals on its own and can easily be managed with painkillers like ibuprofen, paracetamol and asprin say most GP’s. Ibuprofen in particular contains an ainti-inflammatory agent that’s great for dealing with muscle strain.

PINCHED NERVES. Your spine is made up of 24 vertebrae and when the structure of these changes, it’s possible for a nerve to become trapped. Strangely, the pain is often felt in your arms or legs. CAUSES; Sleeping in an awkward position or repetitive movement like lifting or gardening. TREATMENT; Avoid activity that aggravates the problem. Resting and lying down as much as possible should ease the pain. It should eventually go away after a few days or weeks. As it heals you may want to use topical ibuprofen gel to ease the pain.

STENOSIS When pressure is put on the spinal column, the nerve impulses are interrupted, triggering weakness, numbness and pain in your legs, but often not in the back. CAUSES; Conditions like arthritis and a slipped disc. TREATMENT; You’ll need to visit your GP who may prescribe stronger painkillers like Voltarol. (Not prescribed to those with blood pressure problems) physiotherapy, steroid injections or even alternative therapies like acupuncture or chiropractic treatments.

Great looking skin is as easy as A B C D...

Confused about which creams are right for your skin? Swot up on the new generation of alphabet creams. They really will revolutionise your beauty regime.

A

B

Will it suit your skin? If you want younger-looking skin, then vitamin A is for you. Older formulations, which are only available on prescription, can sometimes cause side effects, such as irritation, peeling and redness, but newer and over the counter formulas generally will not cause any irritation to your skin. They may take a bit longer to work, but eventually you should see the same results as prescription strength products.

Will it suit your skin? The creamy consistency will ;help dry skin look ;more hydrated. But not all ~BB creams are the same; some are designed to give your skin a matt texture, which is beneficial if you suffer from oily breakouts; others have soothing properties, and then there are ones that will boost the radiance of your skin. -BB creams are available in limited number of shades – great for paler and medium skin tones, but not so for dark skin as they may make you look ashen.

is for vitamin A Vitamin A, or retinol (a derivative of vitamin A), is considered by many dermatologists as the ‘gold standard’ of skincare ingredients. It’s one of the most effective at reducing the visible signs of ageing. It has an innate ability to work in the lower structure of the skin, offering unrivalled results on skin roughness, collagen stimulation and readjustment of normal cell activity.

How to use it. Vitamin A serums and creams should be applied at night after you’ve cleansed your skin. Start off usage slowly to build up your skin’s tolerance. We recommend an initial application of 0.5% every second evening, increase the frequency and strength of vitamin A and wait for 30 mins before applying your moisturiser, as some ingredients can interfere with vitamin A’s sensitive character. Alpha-H Alpha A Serum 0.5 £50.50 (Beautyday.com) A gentle introduction to vitamin A, even if your skin is affected by rosacea, eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis.

Indeed Labs Retinol Reface Skin Resurfacer, £19.99 (boots. com) three forms of retinol smooth your skin and target lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet.

is for BB cream A BB cream is like a tinted moisturiser with skincare benefits and was originally formulated to help soothe and camouflage minor skin imperfections after surgery. Consumers have come to expect more from their foundation than just covering their skin. BB creams give skin nearly everything it needs – protection, antioxidants for prevention and coverage to conceal imperfections.

How to use it. Short on time? Speed things up by replacing your serum, day cream and foundation with a BB cream. If you prefer light coverage, try swapping your tinted moisturiser for a BB cream to give your skin the added beauty boosting benefits and UV protection. If you skin is very dry use a BB cream as a primer underneath your regular foundation to give skin a moisture boost and stop your make-up clogging in dry, flaky areas.

Nivea Daily Essentials BB Cream with SPF10, £5.99 (available nationwide) Contains shea butter and provitamin B5 to help the skin retain moisture.

Will it suit your skin? What separates CC creams from BB creams is the colour-correcting technology. Moisture Surge CC Cream uses colourcorrecting optics, which neutralise your skin’s complexion, achieving an effortless glow. Great for mature skin, the colour correcting technology will help neutralise redness and disguise discolouration for an instant ‘fix’, but potent ingredients will also work on problems over time, too. How to use it. For dull days, apply a CC cream after your day cream and before your make-up to help brighten and refresh your skin. If you suffer from redness or uneven tone, then use a CC cream regularly so potent ingredients such as niacinamide and glucosamine can work properly and help to even out your skin. The lighter texture of a CC cream means you can use it as a primer even if your skin is dark. Just blend the right shade of foundation over the top to create a better colour match.

L’Oreal Paris Nude Magique CC Creams, £9.99 (available nationwide) Three formulas to correct redness, dullness or fatigue.

Clinique Age Defense BB Cream Broad Spectrum SPF30 £26 (Clinique.co.uk) Particularly good at controlling excess oil. Antioxidants and high UV protection make it great for anti-ageing.

is for CC cream. CC creams (AKA ;Complexion Correctors) are like tinted primers. Both BB and CC creams are multifunctional hybrids that can be layered with other products. But while a BB cream helps prevent ageing, a CC cream tackles existing concerns like redness and dullness. A CC cream is lighter in texture and give skin an overall glow.

D

is for Daily Defence. There are not many DD creams available on the UK beauty market, but of the ones that are, the main purpose is to protect the skin from environmental damage and premature ageing. Use a DD cream every day underneath your make-up and you’ll see an improvement in your skin texture with continued use. Protecting our skin’s barrier functions ensures it’s performing to the best it can in defending against a host of disruptors like bacteria, dry air and the sun’s damaging rays. Will it suit your skin? If you’re looking to reduce wrinkles and improve the texture of your skin, then a DD is for you as it is powerful anti-ageing and protecting ingredients are tis main selling point. And because most DD creams on the market aren’t tin ted, it will suit any skin tone no matter how pale or dark. How to use it. It’s all about gentle cleansing and exfoliating first, if you don’t start with a good canvas, then any product you layer on top won’t be effective. Apply each morning before your make-up – you can even layer a BB or CC cream over the top to give your skin added benefits and just a hint of colour.

Clinique Superdefense SPF20 daily Defense Moisturiser £29 (Clinique. co.uk) Ultra-Hydrating ingredients protect your skin from premature ageing and future damage.

Madara Daily Defence Cream £15 (mypure.co.uk) cloudberries and sea buckthorn protect the skin, balance skin tone and plump lines and wrinkles.

Mavala, Nail Polish Mavala’s colour range is free from harmful ingredients such as parabens, formaldehydes, toluene, camphor, cellophane, animal ingredients and heavy metal. Making poms in this way takes a little bit longer, however you can easily customise the size of your pom to suit your requirements by simply altering the diameter of the cardboard circles you cut out You will need: •....Wool/yarn •....Cardboard •....Pencil •....Scissors

Pretty Pots. Use whatever jars you have lying around, Le Parfait jars have neat rims and stylish lettering on them, but any jar will work well. Clean them out thoroughly, then make sure they’re completely dry.

You will need: •....Large glass jars •....Pain •....Paintbrush •....Paper towel •....Newspaper •....Varnish.

Pour a little paint into the bottom of the jar and swish around. Use a paintbrush to ensure you cover every area inside the jar. Remove any excess paint with a paper towel and ensure the rim is clean. Leave to dry on the newspaper. If you’re not using an oil-based paint, add a final coat of varnish so you can fill your vase with water. Hold the jar up to the window – if you can see streaks you need to add another layer of paint. Add water, your favourite flowers and display.

CRAFTING Get your creative side active with your kids...

1

Cut out two cardboard circles using a circular object as a template (jars and mugs make great templates) with a hole in the middle of each so that you end up with a ‘ring’ shape.

2 3 4 5

You will need:

Hold both the cardboard circles tightly together, and wind your wool / yarn evenly and firmly around the edge.

Continue winding the wool / yarn around the circles until the central hole is nearly full. Using the scissors, carefully snip the wound wool/yarn between the two cardboard circles and continue all the way around until all the wool / yarn has been cut.

Thread a length of wool/yarn around the centre of the pom, between the two circles of cardboard, then tie tightly to secure. Do not cut off any of the excess wool / yarn.

6 7

Remove the card from your pom by using your scissors to snip into the card, and pull apart to separate.

Trim your pom to give it even edges.

Hints and Tips The larger the diameter of your circle the larger the pom will be, and the more wool you will need to allow for the making. A circle with an 8 cm diameter is a good size to begin with, this dimension can then be adjusted accordingly dependent on the size pom needed in future. www.familiesfirst-uk.com

ccording to *Dr Miriam Stoppard, as a nation, we are poor swimmers. In the UK one in five adults can’t swim and 400 people drown each year. Startling, I know, but it does get worse. A recent report by the Amateur Swimming Association showed that one in three children can’t swim 25 yards by the time they leave primary school. Which means that every summer 200,000 children aged 11 are vulnerable to drowning.

g ttin e g ate WET? h u yo CE Do ur FA yo

The National Curriculum stipulates that children should be able to pass the 25m test by the time they reach the age of 11. However, four out of ten schools don’t even offer swimming lessons to pupils. But, as parents we must take some responsibility. You will think nothing about insuring your home, your car, even your life and before you go on holiday you will take out travel insurance. But would you think of “insuring” your children by making sure that they can swim thereby preventing unfortunate accidents?

‘Adrienne Bell Swimming Specialist' With Adrienne’s help and encouragement you will be swimming like a fish this term!

Adrienne Bell is a local Swimming Specialist who firmly believes in quality rather than quantity. Adrienne can have you or your child swimming within 10 sessions, so you can say “goodbye” to those endless lessons and long and often protracted waiting lists. And Adrienne teaches in a local private swimming pool so you can be assured of the individual attention needed to become a confident swimmer.

• Private pool • Individual attention • Groups of only 3 - 5 • Ages 4 - 11 years • 10 week courses during term time • Fast track strokes + waterskills

So, don’t be a statistic and book your sessions now!

GETTING CREATIVE TO TACKLE BULLYING Children and young people across Northern Ireland are being encouraged to use their creativity and take part in this year’s anti-bullying art and creative writing competition. The deadline for entries is Friday 10 October 2014. The creative competition is one of the many exciting initiatives taking place in the lead up to Anti-Bullying Week 2014 (17-21 November 2014). This year’s theme is ‘Together we will make a difference – END BULLYING NOW!’ and will explore our collective role in tackling bullying in our schools and in our communities. Anti-Bullying Week, which is celebrating its tenth year, is co-ordinated by the Northern Ireland Anti-Bullying Forum (NIABF) and supported by Translink. GET INVOLVED Urging everyone to get involved in this year’s Anti-Bullying Week, Lee Kane, NIABF’s Regional Anti-Bullying Coordinator said: “Over the course of the last five years we have integrated a creative competition for young people into Anti-Bullying Week. The competition provides a channel for individuals to tell a story or convey their views on how bullying should be tackled. Last year there were over 1750 entries from young people right across Northern Ireland. “A range of stories and art works were used in displays throughout Anti-Bullying Week and they were studied and reviewed by other young people. There is a lot of value in peer to peer sharing of this nature and

for this reason we are encouraging young people to get creative and share their ideas.” Lee adds: “Bullying can happen anywhere and to anyone, in lots of different ways. It could be in a physical place, such as the playground, the classroom, the lunch room or in the park. Or, it might take place in the cyber world, on social networking websites, through online games or by text message. No matter where or how it happens, we all have a responsibility to make it stop. “We’re asking young people to think about where bullying happens, how it happens and the role we all play in tackling it. Think about who is involved, what they can do and why we all have a responsibility to END BULLYING NOW.” SUPPORT Anti-Bullying Week is once again supported by Translink. Welcoming the launch of the creative competition Translink’s Ursula Kelleher, said : “This year’s theme encourages everyone to work together to end bullying and as the leading provider of school transport in Northern Ireland, Translink is pleased to join forces with the Northern Ireland AntiBullying Forum to tackle this serious issue. “The safety and welfare of pupils travelling

www.familiesfirst-uk.com

on our services is always a top priority and through events like Anti-Bullying week and our innovative ‘Safety Bus’ we are encouraging young people to behave responsibly and with respect for others,” said Ursula. COMPETITION There are two categories in the competition; art and creative writing. Art will include posters, drawings, paintings, sculptures or photographs, while creative writing will include poetry, short stories, diaries, songs and drama scripts up to 500 words in length.

www.facebook.com/FamiliesFirstNI • Page 18

All entries will be judged in three groups, based on age on 30 September 2014: Junior (under 9 years old), Intermediate (9 - 13 years old) and Senior (14-18 years old). Entries must be submitted through a school, youth group or other organisation that has registered for Anti-Bullying Week 2014. Deadline for entries is Friday 10 October 2014. Schools, youth groups and other organisations working with young people can register for Anti-Bullying Week through the NIABF website-

CHILDCARE IN YOUR OWN HOME

Childcare Solutions offers an alternative form of childcare to parents through the Approved Home Childcare service. The childcare is provided in the family home by a qualified and trained childcarer who is matched to the family according to their specific needs. The service works around the hours that you need; understanding how hard it is for families to balance their work and home life and that it can be a struggle for parents to find suitable childcare. One of the key benefits of Approved Home Childcare is the flexibility of the service within the family home. QUALIFIED CHILDCARERS

WHY APPROVED HOME CHILDCARE?

The Approved Home Childcarers ensure that your children are healthy, happy and safe. All the carers are experienced and professionally qualified, have undergone rigorous background checks and are approved by the Health and Social Care Trust.

Approved Home Childcare works best for families who:

In addition, work and medical references ensure that the Approved Home Childcarers are committed, experienced and trustworthy. Ongoing professional development through relevant training courses also ensures the delivery of an ongoing first class childcare service to families. Isobel Plunkett, an Approved Home Childcarer working for Childcare Solutions, said “I owned and managed two private playgroups for thirty years. As an Approved Home Childcarer I now look after three children in the comfort of their own home. I have been impressed by the comprehensive checks which employees and families undergo before being introduced to each other and by the follow up care which we all receive from the Childcare Solutions team!”

• need a childcare service that will fit around their routine and lifestyle. One of the most important benefits of having your children cared for in your own home is the level of flexibility it affords. • want a big say in how their child is cared for in terms of routine, diet, activities and play environment. • have children of different ages, as they can be cared for together. • have a child with a disability, for which the home environment may best suit their needs. • feel their child will be happier at home, surrounded by their own toys and in their own bed, if parent(s) are home late. • live in a location where it doesn’t suit to travel to a childcare setting.

HELP WITH PAYING FOR CHILDCARE - As Approved Home Childcare is a recognised registered form of childcare, parents can save money by using Childcare Vouchers or the childcare element of Working Tax Credits. You can talk to one our Family Benefits Advisors to support and guide you on whether you are eligible to use either Childcare Vouchers or the childcare element of Working Tax Credits. How to...

Familes First NI

Get interview ready

Dress smartly, but be comfortable. Listen to the question and answer without waffling. Have evidence that you’re able to do the job, drawing on past experience. Also, show you know a bit about the company. And don’t forget to breath!

How to...

Get Back to Work...

Search Smart

Be proactive

You need to take time to work out what’s most important to you in a job. Salary? The hours? The location? This will affect how and where you search. If you’re looking for part-time or flexi-time jobs look at timewise.co.uk. If you don’t want to travel far, keep an eye on your local paper or head to gumtree.com where you can narrow job searches by area. Want to get back into the same industry you worked in before? Email all your contacts, let them know you’re on the market and suggest meeting for a coffee. This way, you’ll be front of mind if they hear of any work.

Put yourself on an employer’s radar. Take your CV to companies you’d like to work for and tell them why you’d be good for them. Your local chamber of commerce or council can tell you about networking events that you can attend.

Time for a change Use your career break as a chance to explore new opportunities. Search https:// nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk which helps you choose a job based on your interests, while giving information on what qualifications you’ll need. Work experience isn’t just for teenagers, either; approach a company and offer your services – it’ll give you a foot in the door and teach you how that industry works. Plus you’ll make vital contacts.

Be your own boss Could you turn a hobby into a job? Or could you do your old job for yourself? Get small business advice from nationalenterprisenetwork.org or try gov. uk/ starting-up-a-business, which tell you how to develop a business plan.

Give your self esteem a boost Find even the thought of going back to work daunting? Then talk to former colleagues to remind yourself what you were good at and why, and try some volunteering to ease yourself back into employment – search do-it.org.uk for opportunities. If you’ve been out of your industry for some while, you might want to refresh or learn something new. Search hotcourses.com you can even do some of the work online. www.familiesfirst-uk.com

Think CV There are plenty of templates on the web, but try nationalcareersservice.direct.gov. uk. Be thorough, but concise – no more than two pages- and don’t end it when you stopped work. Say what you’ve done since – joined the PTA or helped with a community project, for example. Turn negatives like redundancy into positives by listing things it’s given you time to achieve – something that shows personal development.

Finance Help your kids get...

Cash savvy!

When secondary schools return from the summer break, pupils will be taught about saving, budgeting and spending as a new subject in the national curriculum. Here’s how to give your children a head start. Talk about money. Children should learn money has a value so they understand that once you spend it, it’s gone. Families have a crucial role to play in financial education. Learning to read – we do that at school but it needs to be reinforced at home. Recent research has shown our financial habits in adulthood are set by the age of just seven, so it is important that parents start passing on good money advice from a young age.

Familes First NI What about pocket money? The amount of money parents give to children varies. Recent figures from Halifax revealed the average amount – nationwide and taking all ages into account –dropped this year to £6.35 per week, down from £6.50. The right amount of money can help teach children important budgeting lessons as they decide on how to spend or save. A family financial expert with Standard Life, explains giving children pocket money in exchange for doing jobs around the house is a good habit. You can make it even better by getting children into a savings habit early. It’s a great start when youngsters can see their money growing, after squirreling away small amounts regularly throughout their childhood. A child trust fund or Junior ISA is a good place to start when it comes to saving pocket money in a tax efficient way.

If you add a couple of drops of essential oil to the cardboard centre of your toilet roll, it acts as a fab room fragrance. I use old doorknobs as a towel racks in the bathroom. I found them at a jumble sale for a couple of pennies and used super strength glue to attach them to the wall – they look really different! I had an old metal watering can that had some holes in the bottom. I was about to throw it out and then I thought, why don’t I use it as a flower pot? I put some earth inside, a few pretty flowers and it sits at the bottom of my garden as an eyecatching cost free garden container.

Families First cash-savvy-tips...

We have put our thinking hats on this month, to get you the best tips on how to spend your money. Watch out for: Don’t fall for the great British broadband con!!! The citizens Advice Bureau has found that people are unfairly being hit with fees when they cancel their broadband contract due to poor speeds, service or if they are moving house. On average, people are paying £190 to get out of a contract - but one reported a huge charge of £625. CAB is calling on internet service providers to stop cancellation fees if people want to leave due to service problems. Anyone who is faced with these fees should call their local CAB for advice.

Tips for a safer Ghosties and ghoulies, things that go bump in the night, trick or treat – these are things that should be fun for all the family, but are you prepared for a safe event? Here are some useful safety and first aid guidelines from St John Ambulance (NI). Pumpkin lanterns

Fancy dress

Carving pumpkins is a favourite pastime but can be fraught with danger. The skins are often hard and required sharp knives, so leave the carving to adults, with the youngsters scooping out the flesh. (Don’t discard the flesh, it makes wonderful soup!)

Children particularly like dressing up for Halloween but you need to ensure that costumes are of a suitable fit. Ill-fitting costumes can lead to slips, trips and falls, the most common cause of accidents. Minor cuts and grazes caused by falls should be treated as above although you may wish to clean the wound under cold water to remove any loose dirt or grit.

Minor cuts are easily treated by applying direct pressure to the wound and covering it with a plaster. The wound will heal itself in a few days. To treat more serious cuts you should apply direct pressure to the wound, ideally using a sterile dressing or a clean, none-fluffy pad. Raising the injured part above the level of the heart will help to reduce the blood loss. Be aware that the casualty could be suffering from shock, so help them to lie down and raise their legs. Protect them from cold by covering them with a blanket or coat and call for help by ringing either 999 or 112. Cover the wound with a firm, sterile dressing. If blood seeps through the dressing, apply a second one on top of the first. If this does not stop the bleeding, remove both dressings and apply new ones, ensuring that pressure is applied directly over the point of bleeding.

Take care when using candles in the lanterns. Minor burns are extremely painful but generally heal naturally if appropriate first aid is given quickly. To treat a burn, first remove any constricting items, e.g. rings and watches. Cool the burn under cold, running water for ten minutes or until the pain is relieved. Cover the burn with non-stick material or a sterile dressing. Kitchen film is ideal to cover burns, but don’t wrap film around the limb because the tissues swell. Caution – DO NOT burst blisters; apply adhesive dressings; ointments or fats. If the casualty is a child or you are concerned about the casualty’s condition, seek medical help.

www.familiesfirst-uk.com

Trips and falls may result in soft tissue or bone injury which requires further treatment. Sprains and strains should be treated using what is known as the RICE procedure. Rest the injured limb by getting the casualty to sit or lie down with the part raised. Cool the area by applying an ice pack or cold compress. A bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel is ideal for this. Provide comfortable support by wrapping the injured part in soft padding extending above and below the injury. Elevate the injured part to minimise bruising and swelling. If the casualty is in severe pain or

www.facebook.com/FamiliesFirstNI • Page 30

unable to use the injured part, seek medical help. As human beings do not have x-ray vision we can never be sure if a bone is not broken. Severe pain, swelling, bruising and an inability to put pressure onto a limb could be an indication of an underlying fracture. If these symptoms are present you should immobilise the limb in a position that is most comfortable for the casualty and arrange transport to the nearest accident and emergency department.

September 2014

Trick or treat Children get excited when going from door to door, often looking for their favourite sweets as treats. Small sweets particularly can cause choking in both children and

abdomen. Clench your fist and place it between the navel and the bottom of the breastbone. Grasp your fist and give up to five abdominal thrusts by pulling inwards and upwards. If the obstruction has still not cleared, repeat the back blows and abdominal thrusts up to three times, checking the mouth each time.

General safety advice When children are out during the hours of darkness ensure that they can be seen. Light coloured costumes or reflective bands reduces the risk of passing motorists failing to see them. Give them a torch to carry and warn them of the dangers of stepping off the footpath. Remind children that they should not talk to strangers or enter houses of people that they do not know. Beware of unwrapped or home-made sweets.

adults. The first aid treatment for choking is the same for both adults and children. If the casualty is breathing encourage them to cough and remove any obvious obstruction from the mouth. DO NOT place a finger into the mouth to try to ‘sweep’ an obstruction clear as this may have the opposite effect and push the obstruction further down the throat. If the casualty cannot speak or stops coughing, carry out back blows. Give up to five sharp blows between the shoulder blades using the heel of your hand. If back blows fail to clear the obstruction stand behind the casualty and put both arms around the upper part of their

Adults, why not accompany your children when they go out on Halloween. You could end up having just as much fun as they do! The first aid tips above do not substitute for formal first aid training. Who do you think you’re seeing? A who’s who in medicine.

You’ve bee you need n told a specialisto see who are y t, but actually li ou to meet? kely

Do you know the difference?

A heart surgeon vs a cardiologist. Cardiologist do investigations for heart problems, including ECGs and also tests using dye and X-rays to check for blood flow in the coronary arteries. They are also the doctors that insert stents (tiny metal coils) into the coronary arteries to help keep them open. But if you need your chest opened up, for example, for a bypass operation, then the cardiologist will refer you on to a heart surgeon.

UNDERSTAND HOSPITAL HIERARCHY All doctors in hospitals wear identity labels, but do you know what they really mean? FOUNDATION YEARS 1 AND 2 (SHORTHAND IS (F1 AND F2)

They have studied for five or six years in medical school, qualified as doctors and are in their first or second year in hospital. What they do: These are the doctors you are most likely to encounter when you’re admitted. They’ll take a medical history and do a basic examination, plus organise – and often take – blood needed for tests.

THE SPECIALIST REGISTRARS (SHORTHAND IS SPR)

In hospital specialities, doctors work through eight levels of training in the specialist registrar grade, in order to be able to apply for a consultant post. Occasionally, a level will take a whole year: sometimes a doctor will progress through two levels in one year. This means that some SpRs are very junior, while others are senior and almost at consultant level. What they do: SpRs help out in hospital clinics. If you’re seen initially by a junior SpR, it’s likely that they will cross-check with a more senior doctor before any decisions are taken, while senior SpRs have the expertise to make decisions on their own. SpRs also help out the F1 and F2 year doctors on the wards.

CONSULTANT

The most senior grade. Most doctors are in their mid to late thirties before they reach this level. What they do: You’re most likely to encounter a consultant in an outpatient clinic, though because of sheer numbers of patients, they cannot see everyone, so they’re more likely to see new patients while those visiting as a ‘follow up’ are more likely to be seen by a junior member of the team. Most also do a daily round of checking on the inpatients under their care on the wards. As associate specialist is not a training grade, but rather someone who has done some specialist training, but does not wish to have the responsibility of being a consultant. Many work part-time. Senior ones can be extremely knowledgeable.

SPECIALIST NURSES.

In many clinics there are also specialist nurses, the most senior of whom are ‘nurse consultants’. What they do: Depending on their grade, specialist nurses will either tend to do tests and follow-up-visits or, in the case of nurse consultants, see patients at their first visit. Though often incredibly knowledgeable, they have a nursing rather than a medical qualification.

www.familiesfirst-uk.com

A gastroenterologists vs a colorectal surgeon A gastroenterologist will usually specialise in either the top – oesophagus, stomach and upper part of the intestine – or the large bowel and rectum. They do tests including blood tests, and also camera work, looking inside either the top or the lower part of the bowel but, in addition, can do operations, such as dealing with haemorrhoids, or removing parts of the bowel. If you have abdominal pain or severe indigestion, for which your GP can’t find a cause, then your GP is likely to refer you initially to a gastroenterologist. If you’re then found to need some form of surgery, for example, removal of your gall bladder, then you will be referred on to a gastrointestinal surgeon. But if your GP has already found that the cause of your pain is gallstones, then you will be referred directly, to a surgeon. An obstetrician vs gynaecologist Obstetricians specialise in the care of pregnant women, and delivering babies, while gynaecologists specialise in treating problems of the female pelvic organs – the womb, ovaries and fallopian tubes. During the early SpR years, doctors will do both, but then later will specialise in a particular field. A Physician vs a surgeon Surgeons are trained to do operations in their particular speciality, for instance

orthopaedics, or arteries and veins (vascular surgeons). Doctors also further specialise within their chosen speciality, so, for example, and orthopaedic surgeon will specialise in the shoulders or the wrists, the hips or the feet. Cardiothoracic surgeons specialise in either the heart or the lungs. And gynaecologists may specialise in bladder problems (urogynaecologists) or gynaecological cancers. Physicians, on the other hand, have no training in surgery, but rather have training in doing tests and investigations in their chosen field. They usually have ‘ist’ in their title – for example, a cardiologist, and endocrinologist or a gastroenterologist. Often a patient is referred initially to a physician, who will do any tests you require. If you then require surgery, you’ll be referred on to a surgeon.

To confuse further.

‘ist’ at the end of a job title is also used by some healthcare professionals who are not medically qualified, for example, a podiatrist, who can deaa with minor food conditions, or a physiotherapist. Radiologist vs a radiographer. A radiologist is a medically qualified doctor who specialises in looking at images, including X-rays, CT scans and MRIs “Interventional radiologists” have

CAMERAWORK.

Increasingly, investigations are done using tiny cameras, which are passed into the body. The names of these usually end in “oscopy” – for example, gastroscopy, looking in the stomach, or cystoscopy, looking in the bladder. Who does these procedures depends on the part of the body – some are done physicians, others by surgeons, and some by radiologists, who are specialists in working with imaging techniques, including MRI and ultrasound, as well as X-rays.

Give life to someone you don’t know

Obstetricians sp ecialise in the care of pre gnant women: gynaec ologists treat problems o f the female pelvic org ans.

Someone like Joshua. He’s 8, but when he was born blood transfusions saved his life. referrals have to be scrutinised by a panel had additional training in performing before they are sent to hospital, to check procedures under image control, for that they’re justified. example, passing wires into the body via arteries, or taking biopsy samples under GPs are also encouraged to use the “choose ultrasound control. Radiographers are and book” system, which means the the highly trained technicians that take patient can choose which hospital X-rays, or operate the machines they’re referred to within their for MRI scans. They’re not D local area. This means that medically qualified. So, for E US F N patients can choose to go example, when you have a o CO re wh u s to a hospital where there is mammogram, it will be a n u to u’re sent g If yo n a shorter waiting list, but radiographer who positions i e re b P to you a k your G you may not know the name your breasts on the X-ray as y see, f i r of the consultant, instead, plate and takes the pictures, a l c but it’s a radiologist who examines the pictures and issues the report.

you just go to a hospital clinic dealing with your particular speciality.

A clinical psychologist vs a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists who specialise in disorders of the mind, and can prescribe medicines. Clinical psychologists, on the other hand, have done several years’ training in disorders of the mind, but are not medically qualified, and cannot prescribe. They have often done more training in helping patients with talking therapies, for example, cognitive behaviour therapy, than psychiatrists.

The Mr vs Dr confusion. In surgical specialties, a doctor is allowed to call themselves Mr (or Miss or Mrs) when they have passed the specialist exam of their royal college. This exam is taken during the SpR years and, in fact, a doctor must have passed the exam in order to apply to become a consultant. So it’s not just surgical consultants that are called Mr/ Mrs/Miss – many senior SpRs in surgical specialities are often Mr/Miss/Mrs too. But this doesn’t happen in medical grades – their doctors stay addressed as Dr.

A podiatrist vs chiropodist. Podiatrists are foot specialists who treat foot problems such as corns, verrucas and thickened nails. They are not medically qualified, but some can perform minor operations on feet, such as straightening bunions (though many orthopaedic surgeons feel this is not good practice, and that foot operations should only be performed by medically qualified surgeons). Podiatry is the same as chiropody – there is no difference between the two. Referral pathways: choose and book. GPs now have set guidelines about referring patients to hospital. Often, a series of tests has to be completed before the referral can be done. In some areas, all

And Finally.......... Who looks at the whole picture? The age of the “general physician” – a doctor who could look at the whole body – is sadly long gone. There only “generalists” now are GPs. This can mean that if you have vague symptoms, which your GP is unable to pinpoint, you may get sent to several different specialists, for example an endocrinologist, who specialises in hormone disorders, or a haematologist, who specialises in blood problems, before you finally get the right treatment. However, any good specialist should take a “holistic” approach, which means they should take all your symptoms into account, not just those in their narrow field.
