During the event, drinks and appetizers will be available from 4PM to 7PM, come enjoy a glass of beer or wine before or after your tour and stroll our grounds, which will be lit by candlelight for the event. Reservations must be made for the tours. www.musuemsonthegreen.org

FALMOUTH BEACHES

With 68 stunning miles of coastline, Falmouth is the perfect place for those who love the sea. Falmouth is well known for its beautiful beaches and the warm waters of Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound; water temperatures average 70 degrees in the summer, and sunbathers can enjoy our beaches through late autumn. Many of our beaches are handicapped-accessible and all offer beach wheelchairs (reservation required). Call 508-548-8623 in-season for more information. www.falmouthma.gov/151/Beach

BRISTOL: This beach, located in “Falmouth Heights” neighborhood, has plenty of parking and beautiful views. A small creek, which ebbs and flows between Little Pond and Vineyard Sound, is a great place for youngsters to attempt to catch sea creatures caught in the tidal surge. Beach sticker required for parking.

CHAPOQUOIT: This location is a favorite of many families. White sand and beautiful open ocean views greet beachgoers, while windsurfers are welcome on the north end of the beach. Beach sticker required for parking.

FALMOUTH HEIGHTS: The beach at Falmouth Heights on Vineyard Sound is long and boasts plenty of beautiful sand. The water is warm and views of Martha’s Vineyard are outstanding. A new ramp has been installed for handicap access. A beach sticker is required and parking is limited.

MEGANSETT: This beach is located along the shores of Buzzards Bay. Frequented primarily by neighborhood families, Megansett is a great location for viewing a sunset. A beach sticker is required and parking is limited.

MENAUHANT: Located on Vineyard Sound, this is the longest beach in Falmouth, and is divided into an east side and a west side by a tidal stream that connects Bournes Pond to Vineyard Sound. Beach sticker required or a one-day fee can be paid to the gate attendant for parking.

OLD SILVER: This beach is by far the most popular on the Cape. The parking lots are divided into two sections: one for residents and one for the public, which is accessed by paying a daily entry fee. Concessions, showers and changing rooms are available. People come from great distances to enjoy Old Silver’s pure white sand. Parking is ample, but come early; the lots fill up fast on hot summer days.

STONY: Located in Woods Hole Village, this MBL-owned beach is staffed by Falmouth lifeguards and parking attendants. It is a wonderful beach, sheltered from the afternoon southwest winds and highly utilized, so arrive early. A Falmouth beach sticker or MBL sticker is required to use the limited parking area.

SURF DRIVE: Located on Surf Drive, a short walk from Falmouth’s Main Street, this beach features public showers and a concession stand. The Ellen T. Mitchell Bathhouse, where residents and nonresidents may purchase Falmouth Beach Parking Stickers, is located here. Surf Drive Beach faces Martha’s Vineyard and is a part of Vineyard Sound. Beach sticker required or a one-day parking fee can be paid at the gate, or a fee paid at Mill Pond parking area further west on Surf Drive.

Withmore than 3,500 acres of conservation land, Falmouth is an ideal destination for ecologically-minded travelers. Numerous organizations and the Town itself have worked for decades to save these special and important places. Many of our open spaces are accessible to the public for recreation, while others are forever wild - permanently preserved to ensure clean drinking water, to protect sensitive habitat for wildlife and birds, to maintain farm fields for local food production, or to provide important buffer for climate change and sea-level rise. Miles and miles of well-maintained recreational trails traverse a wide variety of terrain: oak and pine forests, rugged moraine, riverfront, coastal and inland ponds, salt marsh, and more.

Long Pond & Falmouth Town Forest

Long Pond, Falmouth’s main source of drinking water, lies at the heart of more than 700 protected acres of forest and swampland. Long Pond is the only pond on the Cape that provides town drinking water. Because it is a reservoir, the pond itself is off-limits to the public, but a 3.5-mile dirt service road encircles the pond and is a terrific path for hikers and mountain bikers. Parking is available at Grews Pond and at the entrance to Goodwill Park on Gifford Street.

Coonamesett Greenway Heritage Trail (CGHT)

This 3-mile trail, completed in 2021, runs through more than 500 acres of permanently protected land along both sides of the Coonamessett River, in a north-south “greenway” of open space. There are several shorter loop options with a nearly 1-mile wheelchair accessible section and two boardwalks that cross the river in the southernmost section. Along the CGHT 11 "waystations" with educational displays provide a narrative of natural and human history throughout the river corridor. The Greenway hosts a range of recently restored natural systems including wetlands, forests and meadows that are home to a diversity of plants and animals. The cold river water supports five species of migratory fish as well as other animals like otters and ospreys.

BETTEY WILEY

Inthe 1660s, Falmouth's pioneering European settlers arrived in "Suckanesset," obtaining land from Native Americans with the sanction of the Court of Plymouth Colony. They established their initial homes, farms, and shared pastures on the isthmus flanked by Salt and Fresh Ponds. By 1686, the town secured its incorporation. Merely eight years later, it adopted the name Falmouth in homage to the birthplace of Bartholomew Gosnold, purportedly the first English explorer to sight Cape Cod in 1602. This esteemed coastal community has observed the passage of four centuries, from the indigenous Wampanoag tribe, also known as the "People of the First Light," to daring Yankee whalers, seasoned sea captains, and valiant Revolutionary War figures. Every corner and inlet of Falmouth resonates with enthralling tales. Roam past the birthplace of Katharine Lee Bates, the creative force behind "America the Beautiful," or walk the shores of Surf Drive, where residents endured an assault by the British warship HMS Nimrod in 1814. Stand sentinel beside the majestic Nobska Lighthouse, revered as one of America's most historic and scenic beacons, before immersing yourself in the maritime legacy of the former whaling hub, Woods Hole.

FALMOUTH’S HISTORY

FALMOUTH

Falmouth Village, nestled in the heart of this classic New England town, has a storied past dating back to the 1600s when the first European settlers established their homes on the neck of land between Siders and Salt Ponds, near what is now the Old Burying Ground. Today, Falmouth stands as the second largest town on Cape Cod, boasting a population of over 33,000 year-round residents. The Village exudes historic charm, with its iconic Village Green - one of seven National Historic Districts within the town - serving as a focal point. Surrounding the Green are inviting accommodations, the Falmouth Museums on the Green, and the birthplace of Katharine Lee Bates, adding to the area's allure. Just steps away from the Green, Main Street bustles with life, offering an array of unique shops, diverse dining options, and boutique art galleries. Falmouth Village is also home to the bustling Falmouth Harbor, the serene Beebe Woods, and the popular Surf Drive Beach. On the eastern shore of Falmouth Harbor lies Great Hill, providing breathtaking ocean views and housing several Carpenter Gothic cottages dating back to the 19th century. This charming area, known as Falmouth Heights, was initially developed as a summer retreat by businessmen from Worcester, Massachusetts, in the 1870s. Today, many of the original houses and pocket parks still dot the landscape, preserving the area's rich history and character.

EAST FALMOUTH

Nestled between the Coonamessett and Childs Rivers, this vibrant village has long served as the agricultural heart of Falmouth. Initially, it thrived with a fledgling yet brief mill industry and a prosperous cranberry trade that persists to this day. Welcoming a significant influx of immigrants from Portugal, the Azores, and the Cape Verde Islands, East Falmouth burgeoned into the largest producer of strawberries per acre in the nation by the 1920s, propelled by their industrious efforts. While much of the farmland has since transitioned into residential and commercial properties, East Falmouth maintains its agricultural focus. The Cape Cod Fairgrounds is a hub of activity throughout the season, hosting events such as the County Fair and the Harvest Festival. Nature enthusiasts flock to the Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary, renowned for its array of 65 holly tree varieties, while birdwatching opportunities abound at both the sanctuary and the Sea Farms Reservation on Green Pond. East Falmouth Village proudly preserves over a dozen working farms, complemented by five exceptional golf courses and the allure of Menauhant Beach, one of Falmouth's ten inviting public beaches.

HATCHVILLE

Named in honor of Jonathan Hatch, a descendant of Falmouth's original settler, Hatchville stands as one of the town's more rural villages, its layout established in 1712 and its core centered around the historic East End Meeting House on Sandwich Road. Initially a thriving dairy hub and expansive agricultural expanse, by 1936, this village surrounding Coonamessett Pond had transformed into a predominantly recreational area. Today, it is characterized by residential neighborhoods interspersed with cranberry bogs, picturesque ponds, small-scale farms, preserved conservation lands, and verdant woodlands. At Coonamessett Farm, an active agricultural cooperative situated

on Hatchville Road, families can partake in a variety of engaging activities. Moreover, numerous cranberry bogs in the area are open to the public for harvesting during the autumn months. Outdoor enthusiasts can delight in exploring the expansive 2,000-plus-acre Francis Crane Wildlife Reservation, which boasts diverse habitats and ample opportunities for wildlife observation and appreciation.

NORTH FALMOUTH

Situated as the northernmost village, easily accessible via the scenic Shining Sea Bikeway, North Falmouth retains its idyllic charm among Falmouth's villages. Take a leisurely drive along Old Main Road to marvel at the timeless architecture dating back to the 1730s. Alternatively, wander along the footpath winding through the picturesque 20-acre Roskovics Conservation Area, once a bivouac site for soldiers during World War II. A visit to North Falmouth wouldn't be complete without a stop at Old Silver Beach, hailed as one of Cape Cod's finest beaches. Here, soft sands invite relaxation, pristine waters beckon for a refreshing swim, and the sunset over Buzzards Bay paints a breathtaking panorama, ensuring an unforgettable experience.

TEATICKET

Ta-Ta-ket, a name bestowed upon this village by the Wampanoag Indians, signifies "at the main tidal stream." Once characterized by a convergence of freshwater streams meandering through pine groves and farmland, Teaticket has evolved into one of Falmouth's bustling commercial districts. Enriched by its own verdant village green, Teaticket stands as a vibrant residential community and a vibrant retail hub. Here, visitors and locals alike can explore a diverse array of offerings, including antiques, artisanal furniture, markets, dining establishments, and a myriad of retail shopping opportunities.

WAQUOIT

Waquoit, the most charmingly rustic of Falmouth's villages, exudes an endearing simplicity. Much of Waquoit, including Washburn Island, has been designated for preservation on the prestigious National Register of Historic Places. With a wealth of heritage, the island has unveiled Native American artifacts like hammer flakes and shell middens, echoing human presence spanning millennia. Nestled within Waquoit lies the Waquoit Bay Estuarine Research Reserve, a dynamic educational hub seamlessly integrated into the Massachusetts State Parks system. Its welcoming visitor center, operational year-round, extends an invitation to the public for immersive educational experiences, delving into the ecological riches of Cape Cod. Waquoit stands as a diverse tapestry of natural wonders, encompassing open waters, saline and freshwater marshes, protective barrier beaches, windswept sand dunes, meandering rivers, and lush forests of mixed pine and oak. Sprawling sand plain grasslands add to the captivating mosaic. This remarkable diversity makes Waquoit an idyllic retreat for those seeking to bask in the unspoiled beauty and varied ecosystems of Cape Cod.

68 www.FalmouthChamber.com VILLAGE PROFILES

WEST FALMOUTH

West Falmouth, where weathered saltbox cottages and charming shingle-style summer homes nestle amidst oak and pine groves, boasts a wealth of Falmouth's oldest architectural treasures. Perched upon West Falmouth's elevated highlands, some of the loftiest terrain on Cape Cod, one can savor unparalleled vistas across Buzzards Bay. A leisurely drive along the picturesque West Falmouth Highway or a scenic bike ride along the Shining Sea Bikeway will lead you to Bourne Farm, established in 1775. This historic site, acquired by Salt Pond Areas Bird Sanctuaries, Inc. in 1980, sprawls across more than 49 acres of fields, trails, and woodlands overlooking the picturesque Crocker Pond, inviting the public to enjoy hiking and picnicking. Yet, amidst West Falmouth's tranquil ambiance, lies an unexpected thrill - just off the pristine shores of beautiful Chapoquoit Beach awaits some of the East Coast's most exhilarating windsurfing adventures.

WOODS HOLE

At the southern end of the Shining Sea Bikeway, this salty village is bustling with scientists, residents, and visitors. Follow the sea to Woods Hole and take a moment to enjoy the lovely landscape of Spohr Gardens, and then travel on to Nobska Lighthouse, one of Falmouth’s most notable landmarks. As you round Little Harbor, stop and visit the Woods Hole Historical Museum where you’ll see a diorama that depicts an earlier time. In the village, you’ll cross over the Eel Pond drawbridge to find waterfront restaurants, art galleries and distinctive boutique shopping. Visit the oldest aquarium in the nation, where the kids can get hands-on with the touch tanks. Best known for its scientific community, Woods Hole is home to world renowned Marine Biological Laboratory, NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Sea Education Association and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (home to the discovery of the Titanic). Free tours of these institutions are offered seasonally and year round. Returning from Woods Hole to Falmouth, The Knob, a hidden gem on Quissett Harbor, offers a short hike to view a radiant sunset over Buzzards Bay.

A life-sized David Lewis bronze statue of environmentalist and writer Rachel Carson (1907-1964), was dedicated in 2013. Carson, who studied and worked in Woods Hole for many years, wrote Silent Spring, the book that many feel was the beginning of the worldwide environmental movement.

Refill Reuse Falmouth (RFF) is the Falmouth Water Stewards-led initiative to encourage use of refillable water bottles and to provide clean, refreshing Falmouth water for residents of and visitors to Falmouth. Since 2021, plastic, single-use water bottles in sizes smaller than one gallon cannot be purchased in Falmouth. As we enter summer 2024, there are 20 RRF outdoor water bottle refill/drinking fountain stations in Falmouth, including nine at town beaches. Major funding for these stations has been provided by the residents of Falmouth through the Community Preservation Fund, the Falmouth Road Race, the Woods Hole scientific institutions and business association, and the Rowan family. www.falmouthwaters.org. The Town of Falmouth offers many recycling programs ranging from year ‘round residential curbside recycling to seasonal collection events for “Hard-To-Recycle” Materials. Special collection opportunities for materials such as Household Hazardous Waste, Boat Shrink Wrap, Clothing and Textiles, Document Shredding, Holiday String

Lights, and Christmas Trees are offered free of charge to residents. Year ‘round drop-off stations for materials including batteries, food scraps, cooking oil, textiles, and more are located at the Town Waste Management Facility at 458 Thomas B. Landers Road. See town website for more information. This summer the Department of Public Works is pleased to support CARE for the Cape & Islands’ new game-day recycling initiative at Commodores games! We encourage Falmouth residents, visitors, and businesses to champion local recycling efforts which help keep our environment clean and support a robust regional recycling industry.
