Crisis! by Fake Industries Architectural Agonism

What matters right now is how to deal with the consequences. Think backwards, recall. Earlier foresights offer a bygone sort of delight: none got closer to this extension of capitalist disaster. Architectsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; honeymoon with economic power is over and it is becoming an unfriendly divorce. We are left with its cost: no thrust, overpriced assets to dispose off and a traumatized progeny of users striped from their home ownership. For the time being the State mediates, but the various stimulus packages avoid architecture. In these conditions, we would prefer not to offer conciliatory solutions or moralized futures, nor even dystopian cynicisms. Rather, this portfolio arranges architectural operations in a tripartite array: foreclosures, real estate and credit, which refer as much to their original meaning as to last year economic reorganization, i.e. the dramatic increase of foreclosures, the burst of the real estate bubble and the extreme lack of credit. Nothing but to the conditions in which we operate. In fact, what follows is the map of the opportunities we found under such conditions: alternative forms of domesticity emerged from foreclosures, planning strategies that take advantage of the burst and prevent future real estate bubbles and forms of architectural implementation whose main requirement is to bypass credit agencies. Our humble contribution to the disclosure of the disciplineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future is a set of architectural operations tested against the present conditions. Once closed, only office space is left, lighted by a glowing wall that has become Cesar’s corporate identity. “Khlebnikov´s (music) Houses” are two boxes built in a 900 sqf Brooklyn loft to isolate private concerns and perverted attitudes of two roommates that cannot afford separate living environments. “The Illegal hotel” is an installation of sleeping pods for interns disguised as the lighting system of an architectural office. It unveils the precarious life and the economic regime that the recently graduate architecture students confront when they leave the school.

Free NYC Apartments or how to question the housing market in New York

Free Nyc Apartments!

New York is the most expensive city in America. You could hardly rent a studio for less than 1500 dollars a month or sublet a room for less than 800. This project shows how to get an apartment for free, specifically a loft in Soho, a project in Queens or a studio in Brooklyn, by faking to be homeless, practicing prostitution or eventually becoming a successful artist. To do so we design informative posters and a campaign for its distribution.

Poster I: Free apartment by becoming a fake homeless In 1979, a homeless man named Robert Callahan, brought an action suit before the courts, against the City and State of New York, arguing for a person’s state constitutional “right to shelter”. After the trial, the city agreed to provide with refuge to all homeless men and by 1983, to all homeless women. Ever since a number of Drop-In Centres provide with night shelter facilities for its visitors while the Intake Centres are institutions where homeless people can live during a two year healthcare and reintegration program, indeed, a number of the individuals that successfully finish the progra are offered an apartment in New York City, in property and for free. The fist of the Free Nyc Apartments posters displayed instructions of how

to get a free apartment by faking being a homeless individual and giving specific information about the Intake Centres and abuses denounced about them. Poster 2: Free apartment by prostituting trough craigslist In 1995, Craig Newmark launches www.craigslist. org, an interactive website where users are allowed to freely publish advertisements and that nowadays is the most successful way of finding housing in New York. Exceptionally a percentage of the ads offer free apartments in exchange of a myriad of different sexual practices. The second of the Free Nyc Apartment posters displayed instructions of how to get a free apartment in New York by becoming a prostitute in exchange of housing as published in www.craigslist.org. Campaign Strategies: 1. Hire off a homeless men to deliver the posters during one hour in 5th Avenue, New York. In exchange he gets the average money he makes per hour on a regular basis. 2. Place free advertisement in the Village Voice. 3. Campaign in the New York subway system vandalizing the frames MTA uses for official communications.

Bed-room, a bed that is a room, that is a space. It floats (positioned on four blue wheels) but only when it is pushed hard since it’s heavy; but still – a “portable habitat”. So: a floating bed, but heavy, wooden, enclosed with walls and a high transparent ceiling. Reminiscent of a cupboard in which one would hide as a child and from where one would watch the world pass-by. Or else, a boat in which one would escape oppressive conditions (a refugee boat), in which one would escape towards something new. But let’s not carry ourselves so far; the point of Khlebnikov’s house is that it’s not a piece of furniture, nor representation of a boat, but rather, it is a block, a bunker. One that provides not only security but supersecurity. And its large walls that also work as doors are the sources of both agitation and mollification. There have been some questions of the possibility of asphyxiation (“will I be able to breathe in there?”). The answer is YES, you can both breathe and suffocate. Few have died already. But if you survive you’ll have a ride of your life; the original two houses have already been successfully tested for sexual activity, reading philosophy and comics, arguments and gentle conversations, whipping, thinking and non-thinking, and for being silent. Further exercises are expected in near future. Thus: the house is a block and a blocking; it is a block of memory, a block of sleep, a block of a mouth, a block of thought. And, consequently, it is a blocking of dreams. It is a house of bad poetry but, at the same time, of immense power. DL

The Illegal Hotel or how be against the economy of architectural offices Architectural offices are partially supported by the work of recently graduated interns. Interns work for free, as the less respected group in the office hierarchy, make coffee, photocopies, barely sleep or eat and require an external financial support to enjoy of such privileges. This project explores the internal contradictions of architectural production embodied in the figure of the intern. It reveals how architects would eventually treat interns as labour pets, so they do not ever need to leave the office or see the daylight. Given a certain well-kwon architectural office located in a centric loft in Manhattan, we designed a series of sleeping pods for interns disguised as the lighting system. The lamps-pods are deployable and once open they can be reached from the ground and interconnected. Each one houses two individual mattresses and folds back to the lamp mode in seconds, avoiding the danger of unexpected city officials inspections. Now interns really belong to the office, plugged to the electric system like any other drafting device!

“Real Estate Nightmares” are planning projects that take advantage of the burst of the real estate bubble. They focus on the lots that the economical chance or lack of time save from the speculative developments and secure them against future bubbles.

“Chunks” is a winner entry for Europan 8 that proposes strategies to manage the archipelago of empty lots that configures the neighborhood of Aldea Moret, in Caceres Spain. Ranging from self-organized landscape to public space polices, the strategies are cost free, sustainable and managed by local agents, but more important, they prevent speculative development to deploy in the neighborhood. “Golf!” is a urban proposal awarded with an honorable mention in Europan 9 that uses the most successful form of suburban development in Spain, the golf course, and transforms its individual courses in urban blocks and rethinks each of the golf course constituencies as social activators integrated in the ecologic management of the compound. “Superphosphates!” is a commission of the City Council of Caceres as a result of the winner entry for Europan 8 “Chunks.” It centers on an abandon Nineteen Century mining development surround by highly speculative real estate operations and saved by the burst of the bubble in 2007. Initially implemented in the form of a book compiling strategies to contain the speculation, it is currently developed as a set of urban regulations that incorporate the participation of local agents, sustainability and energetic autonomy into the advanced preservation that it proposes.

The study area has a gentle topography with maximum height differences of around 50 metres (from 498 m on the slope of Cabezarrubia to the north down to 440 m on the Badajoz highway in the south-west). The eastern part this (the industrial estate on both sides of the railway line) is the most topographically stable area, its height ranging between 450 and 460m, while in the western sector, it runs from the north (Cabezarrubia) and south (hillocks on the other side of the Badajoz highway) in a westerly direction. There is no water-course of any significant size, although the study area is part of the Salor River catchment (a tributary of the Tagus), and is in the centre of the Calerizo de Cáceres aquifer, which must be taken into geotechnical consideration (see Geo-morphology document included in this dossier). Finally, the vegetation is not particularly abundant, scattered across the zone, with clumps of pine trees on Cabezarrubia Hill and around the Special Education College, as well as other small coppices around the original parts of the Miners' Town. The shortage of green zones in the built-up areas of Aldea Moret is obvious. There are interesting views of the natural environment (unchanged) that open up towards the south-west (corresponding land is SNU).

The Aldea Moret district is located to the west of the Cáceres exit towards Mérida and Badajoz. Its sole link to the city is along a narrow, congested overpass above the railway line which further highlights its fringe and end-of-the-road status. La parte este (la del polígono industrial a ambos lados de la vía férrea) es la más estable topográficamente hablando, con cotas entre los 450 y los 460m, mientras que en el sector oeste las oscilaciones del terreno se ponen de manifiesto, con pendientes desde el norte (Cabezarrubia) y el sur (lomas al otro lado de la carretera de Badajoz) hacia el oeste. Por lo que respecta a la hidrografía, no existe ningún cauce destacable si bien cabe recordar que el ámbito, subsidiario de la cuenca del Salor (afluente del Tajo), se encuentra en pleno Calerizo de Cáceres, acuifero a tener en cuenta a nivel de geotecnia (ver documento Geomorfología en la documentación escrita). Finalmente, la vegetación, no muy abundante, se encuentra dispersa por la zona, destacando las masas arbóreas del Cerro de Cabezarrubia (pinos) y del Colegio de Educación Especial, así como pequeños grupos en torno a los elementos originales del Poblado Minero. En cualquier caso, el déficit de zonas verdes en las zonas más pobladas de Aldea Moret es manifiesto. Por otro lado, destacan las interesantes perspectivas del medio natural (este sin modificar) que se abren hacia el suroeste (terrenos que se corresponden ya con SNU)

The typologies are highly varied as a result of the additive process used in different periods: from the imposing industrial buildings around the Mining Township to the industrial warehouses of all shapes and conditions on the Industrial Estate (to the east). The residential typologies include single-family, single-storey dwellings with a courtyard (Barriada Nueva, La Paloma, La Abundancia) and two-storey homes (Casas de la Diputación) and multifamily housing in blocks (open, semi-open and closed street blocks). An analysis of the district fabric reveals zones yet to be built up to the SW of the study area. Activity is concentrated in the north-centre, while the highest density - not population, which is probably located in the latest social housing blocks from the 1990's- but rather urban sprawl, is found between Avenida de la Constitution and Calle Ródano. This area therefore requires an adequate treatment of its public spaces.

Las tipologías edificatorias son de los más variadas, como consecuencia del proceso de adición seguido en diferentes épocas: desde las rotundas edificaciones industriales del entorno del Poblado Minero, hasta las naves industriales, de todos los tamaños y condiciones, del Polígono Industriala (al este). En cuanto a las tipologías residenciales, existen viviendas unifamiliares con patio en una planta (Barriada Nueva, La Paloma, La Abundancia) y en dos plantas (Casas de la Diputación) y viviendas plurifamiliares en bloque (abierto, semiabierto y en manzana cerrada). El análisis de la trama edificatoria evidencia zonas aún no construidas al SO del ámbito. La actividad se concentra en el centro norte, si bien la mayor densidad, no de población (que seguramente se da en los bloques de las últimas promociones de los 90) si no de abigarramiento urbano, se da entre Avenida de la Constitución y Calle Ródano. Por tanto, se hace aquí necesario un adecuado tratamiento del espacio público.

Architectural Mechanisms: Constituencies of the Golf! courses – from the green to the rough –re-imagined as social activators integrated in the urban block ecologic management

GOLF! URBANISM MANIFESTO How to imagine the city in a time when its delirium seems defeated by the suburban lawn? If the inexorable decadence of the city begins in the urgency of its inhabitants to fly out, the fateful weakness of the suburbs is the fatal absence of density, its irremediable infrastructural inefficiency. Not by chance, in the zenith of the anti-urban real-estate bubble, the golf course is the omnipresent tyrant. Yet, while the kids of the young Spanish democracy invest in turf and the architectural profession disregards golf’s banal success, we say WE LIKE GOLF COURSES! Nor because the ecological collapse they imply, nor because of the way they domesticate the landscape, neither for the lack of sociability they promote. Rather because the virus of utopianism implicit in their redundant emptiness, because of their hybridization of natural and artificial and because the generic impunity of their under-used infrastructures. One wonders, is there any civitas left in the suburban dreams of the social-democratic consensus? If so, we will find it in La Laguna, an island in the suburban ocean of Canary Islands tourism that seems the ideal stage to redefine the golf as laboratory for the European city. In fact, this proposal is nevertheless a ten point manifesto for a Golf! Urbanism. 1. The Golf! surface will be neither natural nor artificial, but a grass/asphalt gradient 2. The Golf! topography will conform funnel-like urban blocks, granting sustainability and energetic autonomy 3. In the Golf! soft landscape electric golf cars will substitute suburban pets and SUVs 4. Each constituency of the Golf! courses – from the green to the rough – will be re-imagined as a social activator integrated in the urban block ecologic management 5. The hyperminimun quadruplex will become 60m2 beautiful domestic nightmares surrounding the Golf! Courses 6. Golf! hyperminimun quadruplex allow for a range of three meters spam typologies 7. In the Golf! urban blocks only vertical growth will be permitted. 8. The Golf! lawns will get out of the closet, turning suburban hierarchies inside-out. 9.And thanks to Golf!’s upside-down gardens the street will finally reach the living spaces 10. The Golf! Urbanism Manifesto

In later years highly speculative real estate operations have surrounded the abandon mining complex of Aldea Moret, a nineteen century industrial development in Caceres, Spain, endangering its mayor urban and architectural values. In 2007 the burst of the real estate bubble stopped the private plans to redevelop the site. Caceres City Hall take over the site and ask for an alternative model of development that had to integrate advanced preservation ideas, energetic and ecological sustainability, participative planning polices and the declaration of the abandon mining complex as National Industrial Heritage Site. Superphosphates! Is the result of that call and its first phase â&#x20AC;&#x201C;planningâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; is currently under development.

Los terrenos de los que se ocupa este avance de PERI se centran en las dos parcelas descritas en el PGOU como números 17 y 47 respectivamente.

El grado de conservación del antiguo poblado minero también depende de la extensión de la categoría de preexistencia a la naturaleza existente y Superfosfatos! propone para cada uno de los seis verbos una solución diferente en forma de gestión de la naturaleza.

La parcela 47 o Antiguo Poblado Minero tiene forma de polígono irregular de nueve lados, una superficie de 47.747m2 y linda por el Norte con la calle Santa Eulalia, por el Noreste y Este con la parcela 47, por el Sureste con la vía férrea Cáceres-Sevilla, por el Sur con la carretera enlace con la EX – 00, por el Suroeste con las calles y 5, por el Oeste con la calle Abundancia, siendo todo su límite Oeste de Norte a Sur, las fincas 22, 44, 27 y 42 de la zona libre UE-RT1-EL definida en el Estudio de Detalle de el Área Rio Tinto. La parcela 17 contará así mismo las manzanas 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 y 08 descritas en el PGOU. La parcela 47, es un polígono irregular de 30.452,28 m2 de superficie, que limita al Norte con la vía férrea LisboaCáceres-Madrid, por el Este con la vía férrea Cáceres-Sevilla, y por el Sureste y Este con la parcela 17, y por el Noreste, con las calles 2b de la finca 22 y con la calle 1a, finca 18 de la zona libre UE-RT-1-EL definida en el Estudio de Detalle de el Área Rio Tinto. La parcela 47 cuenta además con la preexistencia de dos naves industriales que se prevén para equipamiento genérico.

Las propuestas implican diferentes estrategias de reparcelación y formas de gestión en el tiempo, aunque que siempre plantean la implementación en base a concursos con unas determinaciones establecidas en el PERI. De esta forma Superfosfatos! asegura que la recuperación del antiguo poblado minero ocurra de forma gradual y medida, definiendo mecanismos de evaluación: foros de arquitectura que analices la evolución de la propuesta teniendo en cuenta criterios de sostenibilidad, identidad y conservación consiguiendo como consecuencia, respuestas diferentes. De la intersección de estas tres formas de gestión emergen tres definiciones distintas de la subclave SF, así como diferentes superficies que pueden optar a la nueva calificación urbanística, Superfosfato! *Las seis propuestas requieren un levantamiento de detalle de las preexistencias, tanto naturales como edificadas, que permita el conocimiento preciso de necesario para su gestión.

Superfosfatos! recupera la memoria de su uso como materia prima de la antigua la mina de Aldea Moret, a la hora de considerar como fertilizantes o agentes de crecimiento de la actividad a parte de los sistemas: las circulaciones, los parkings y a la naturaleza en los espacios públicos. Estos tres elementos son responsables de activar y permitir el crecimiento de la actividad publica en el antiguo poblado minero. Los Fertilizantes se componen de tres elementos: Los Límites aromáticos, los Bosques-Parkings y el Degradado de Césped.

Los Límites Aromáticos son plantaciones de arbustos olorosos característicos de Extremadura que servirán de colchón visual y separador olfativo a las vías del tren, es decir, allí donde transitaban los fertilizantes. La Galeria

: Camino subterráneo que se hace en las minas para descanso, ventilación, comunicación y desagüe.

La torre unifica en un edificio las infraestructuras necesarias para hacer funcionar el barrio haciendo visible las tecnologías que soporta la zona.

La torre recicla una estructura preexistente, la actualiza, intensifica su uso y hacie patente la forma de actuar de Superfosfatos!

Superfosfatos! recupera la memoria de las infraestructuras de la mina al construir una galería subterránea e inteligente que nutra de telecomunicaciones, electricidad, desagües, recolección de pluviales, recolección subterránea de basura, al ámbito objeto de estudio y sirva de semilla para un traza mayor a lo largo de Aldea Moret y la rivera del Calerizo. En otras palabras, una red enterrada que aúne los últimos avances tecnológicos, que se situé siempre siguiendo la traza de las vías, con voluntad de extenderse en el futuro, como dotación urbana y pública.

Estas galerías confluirán y saldrán a la superficie en un mismo punto que servirá de soporte para la maquinaria necesaria para su funcionamiento: la antigua torre situada en el poblado minero. Por tanto, esta edificación preexistente servirá como emblema de la actuación y soporte para este cuerpo de sistemas.

La torre se convierte en el icono del barrio y lo identifica al paso de los trenes con destino a Merida y Lisboa.

Pages of the Superphosphates! book proposing different strategies to contain speculative developments in the future

Superphosphates!, is a strategic plan that defines the steps to transform the mining village in a center for innovation. In the context of Caceres candidacy to the European Cultural capital 2016, Superphosphates! recycles the obsolete mining infrastructure to secure the site against future redevelopments. The galleries, the lighting systems, the deposits of mineral, and the ruined concrete buildings recover its structural functions. Adapted to the new needs of the neighborhood, the mining infrastructure maintains its iconic presence while contributes to the energetic and ecological sustainability housing the urban systems: i.e. sewer systems, electricity, gas, water, wireless networks, water treatment facilities, centralized garbage treatment facility, etc. Ultimately, Superphosphates! re-imagines the mining village in a prototype of selfmanaged sustainable neighborhood of 850.000sqf, that reduces its dependence of the centralized urban systems of the city. Initially implemented in the form of a book compiling strategies to contain the speculation, Superphosphates! is currently developed as a set of urban regulations commissioned by Caceres City Hall.

DCR- Nyc Department of Citizenship Recruitment or how to create invisible schools, no credit needed The Department of Citizenship Recruitment was a New York-based network of underground academies for illegal aliens to be trained to succeed in the process of becoming US citizens organized after the approval of the US law HH4437:

Due the obvious legal implications their names were never disclosed. The courses were self organized with material downloaded from the web www.freenyc.tk. DCR offered the didactic material and the advisory support for three different courses: FREE NYC MARRIAGE COURSE, FREE NYC POLITICAL ASYLUMINTENSIVE COURSE, FREE NYC GENERAL REFUGEE INTENSIVE COURSE. The goal of all three was to facilitate the access to US citizenship and they were specialized according to common procedures to do so. The training included acting classes for the immigration interviews, wardrobe facilities and advise, study material, information lectures and seminars, a website and a wide web of legal advisors. During the year 2006 several courses were spontaneously organized in public spaces of New York. That same year DCR launched an informal poster campaign in the New York City subway in the boroughs with most illegal immigrant population. The poster avoided text and focused on images that will explain the procedure to obtain US citizenship.

Intervener: Can you define Circuit? Architect: Circuit was a fashion show part of the Barcelona fashion week that happened twice a year. Albeit they were partners, they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the credit to enter the precinct of the Barcelona Fashion Week and we proposed to distribute the shows in the streets of Barcelona. I: What role did an architect play in such a bizarre fashion show? A: The work began with the definition of the overall concept for the season. Next, joining efforts with the production crowd, the search for locations in the streets of Barcelona followed. We choose the public spaces that exacerbated the contradictions of fashion catwalks, where the

elitist nature of the event had to be negotiated against the ordinary life of the city. I: Did they interact? A: There were eight fashion catwalks a day, and each season circuit last for three days. And you have to count the parties, art shows, screenings, etc. Every event was precisely scripted. We focused on the position of its constituencies. i.e. red carpet, press, pubic, back stage and lights, and schedule. Within that constrain framework all sort of interferences happen. I: Of what kind?

A: The regular public of the fashion show leaved the safe environment of the where such events usually happen. Imagine, the VIP seated by the locals. All sort of interactions happened; I wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get to the details. But also the uptightness of the catwalk relaxed. The critical gaze of an audience from outside of the fashion world transformed the events, adding freshness to the reactions of the public. I: It seems that you did not design at all. A: Actually, that was the idea. I: What you mean?

A: The lack of credit reduced props to zero. Coordination and organization was the space to innovate. The shows were optimized in terms of time because we can only afford two crowds and there were eight shows in eight different locations of the city. They had half hour to install, then the public seated, 15 min of show and half hour to dismantle. Run not to the next but to the following location and reuse all the equipment. This project explores the operations needed to trigger an Architect career in Ny including the information flows generated by the processing of the transactions required. In order to accomplish this, we create a fictional character, an Architects team named Log in (Logistics International Group), and frame its past in order to forecast its future activities and the funds flows activated by the movements of information regarding this group around New York.

Logistics definition 1. a. Agenda

Logistics are all the operations needed to deliver and trigger services, including the movement of people information flows generated by the processing of transactions. They are associated with the analysis of past activities, forecasting, and the planning and scheduling of future activity as well as the funds flows triggered by the movements of information.

Statement The architect can recognized, denaturalize and redesign cultural and social constructions, going beyond physical boundaries.

The steps that have been followed in this project are:

In November 2006, Log in contacted two different Public Relations. The PRs exposed a list of potential connections in order to jump into the architectural cultural scene in New York.

1.The study of a cultural network related to architecture and logistics, specifically the network that is needed in order to place an entity in the architectural-cultural map of New York.

2.A real interaction with the network.

That is to say, the creation of a fictional architecture group named Log in and its contacts with Public Relations in Manhattan.

3.An analysis of the collected data from the network, its components and its behavior.
