AWARDS & RECOGNITION - Martin County Minnesota FAIRMONT - THE FIRST TOP 20 COMMUNITY IN THE NATION The Fairmont area promotes, instills and supports the Top 20 concepts originally designed and implemented in St. Paul, Minnesota. Teachings are based on the Pareto principle which proposes that roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. In most situations where there is a group doing an activity, some will just naturally succeed more than others. Top 20 awakens in people their inside power (how they think and see) and develops their outside power (how and what they communicate) in order to create more satisfying results and a more enjoyable
journey through life. It helps people of all ages be more aware of choices they have every day to make a positive difference in their relationships and experiences. In the 20 years since initial application, the Top 20 TLC (Thinking, Learning, Communicating) curriculum has evolved nationwide. In
2013, Fairmont made a commitment to promote Top 20 throughout the entire region, engaging the educational institutions, businesses, government and the general populous. Top 20 Thinking to Create a Healthy Workplace and Community points to remember are: 1) Live Above the Line; 2) Help Others Succeed; 3) Communicate “You Matter”; 4) Honor the Absent; 5) See the Problem; Own the Problem. If you would like to know more about how Fairmont has used Top 20 Training to become a better community, visit www.facebook.com/fairmonttop20.

HISTORICAL PLACES - Martin County Minnesota The city of Fairmont was platted in October of 1857 by the Des Moines and Watertown Land Company, who also named the town for the rolling hills surrounding the adjacent lakes. The original name was Fair Mount, but this was later changed to Fairmont.
The first permanent settlers, in what is now the City of Fairmont, were E. Banks Hall and William H. Budd. In June of 1857, Budd and Hall built their homes on the lakes that still bear their names. Mr. Budd recorded the fact that in January of 1857, twenty men, nine women, and twenty-three children lived in the Fairmont area. Fort Fairmount was established in 1862, shortly after the start of the Dakota (Sioux) Indian uprising which terrified settlers throughout southern Minnesota. With the end of the Civil war and the subsiding of Indian troubles, Fort Fairmount was abandoned. The site is now marked by a plaque attached to a large native stone near the present courthouse.
The railroads initially brought prosperity to the area in those early days. Fairmont and Martin County enjoy a broad trade area and have experienced prosperity over the years and into the present time Martin County’s National Register Sites: In Fairmont: Chubb House - 209 Lake Avenue Fairmont Opera House - 45 Downtown Plaza Red Rock Center For The Arts - 222 East Blue Earth Avenue Martin County Courthouse - 201 Lake Avenue George Wohlheter Mansion - 320 Woodland Avenue Old Post Office - 51 Downtown Plaza In Sherburn: Sherburn Commercial Historic District - Main Street North; between Front and 2nd Street
