Campus Life Open House a Huge Success, Oct. 2 According to Mr. Marshall, this past weekend’s Open House had the largest number of student volunteers Prep ever had. This was definitely a good thing because hundreds of parents and future students roamed the Prep hallways on self-guided tours. Visitors were allowed to go anywhere on campus they liked, for a personalized experience. Current Prep students helped visitors with questions about the school, directions, and even personal questions. That's what made this day special, the students. A Shadow Program for potential students will be running all month.
Upperclassmen Words of Wisdom: "Get involved in extracurricular activities as soon as you can and be sure to focus on your grades, or else you might find yourself in a hole that you won't be able to dig your way out of later."

Ben Martinez, as reported by John Godino Crew was introduced to Fairfield Prep in the early 2000’s with a dream of producing winning oarsmen. Since then, the team has developed to realize that goal, and has been expanding their achievements. Lead by Head Coach Ed Feldheim, the 2016 fall season kicked off on the first day of school, with practices five days a week at Captain's Cove in Bridgeport.

Crew
The team is organized into two varsity boats, two junior varsity boats, and two novice boats. In the fall, the races are known as Head Races. They are typically around 5,000 meters, and are won based on the fastest time, not necessarily by whoever crosses the finish line first. This is due to staggered starts. Last Sunday, October 2nd, Prep crew started a successful season with their first regatta, The Head of the Riverfront in Hartford, Connecticut. The first varsity boat excelled with a placement of seventh out of 38 boats. The second and third boats achieved spots in the top ten in their division of JV races, while the fourth boat rowed to 22nd place. In the novice division, the new Prep rowers debuted with ninth place for the fifth boat, and 25th place for the sixth boat. Overall, it was a promising start to an outstanding By Ben Short fall season.

Bellarmine Corner National Merit Scholars By Jamie Paul
Fairfield Prep Seniors have recently been distinguished as National Merit Semifinalists and commended Scholars. These scholars are recognized based on their high, junior PSAT scores. The PSAT is a practice for the SAT and the qualifier for the National Merit Scholarship, which sophomores and juniors are taking this October 19th.
Jonathan Siveyer was a National Merit semifinalist, one of top 16,000 scorers of the 1.6 million who took the test last October. Seniors Grant Ballesteros, Brendan Flynn, Ben Martinez, Junlin Mo and Tom Paul were recognized as commended students, qualifying in the top 34,000 juniors across the country taking the test.
SAT Prep Class As part of Fairfield Prep’s mission to create young men of intellectual competence, an afterschool SAT prep course was offered to seniors this fall, in preparation for the October 3 SAT. A similar class will be offered to juniors this winter. More details to follow. By Evan Bean

New Faculty/Staff Interview
Mr. Ahern Student Discipline Q: What position do you serve at Prep? A: My title is Assistant to the Director of Student Discipline. Q: Describe your past careers. A: I'm retiring from a 30 year law enforcement career. I'm retiring as a Sergeant from the City of Shelton Police Department. I've held various positions, such as Detective Bureau Supervisor, Liaison to the Shelton Public School System, and Patrol Sergeant. Q: What made you want to come to Prep? A: I have a friend who's a Security Officer with Fairfield University, so I came for an interview, and since it follows a school year schedule, I thought this would be a good retirement-type job. I came for an interview and I was hired. Q: Why did you choose to work at a Jesuit, Catholic institution? A: My upbringing brought me to a Catholic elementary school and a public high school. I'm a Roman Catholic and the Catholic/Jesuit philosophy fits well into my thinking. Q: Can you describe anyone that inspired you at any time in your career? A: I've worked with different federal, state, and local officers that have inspired me to do better with my job. There are many different law enforcement officers who are very talented within this nation and this state that inspire me to work harder at succeeding with my job. Q: What are your immediate impressions about the Fairfield Prep community? A: I'm very impressed. The students are polite, it's a very nice campus, and I enjoy seeing all the guys coming and going every day. . By Cole Simons

Urban Plunge
Open House Jazz Quartet, Sunday Oct. 2
Attention Juniors!
Four members of the Fairfield Prep Jazzuits entertained FP visitors on the Quad at Sunday’s annual Open House. Bass guitarist Ben Martinez was accompanied by Crew Pavia on drums, Mike Turk on guitar and drums, and Evan Bean on saxophone.
Looking to make a dent in those thirty long, altruistic service hours while engulfing yourself in both the Prep and Bridgeport community? Well the Urban Plunge may just be the next best thing for you! This experience lasts from ThursdaySaturday on the East Side of Bridgeport. Students will have the opportunity to find a greater sense of gratitude for their particular situation, and perhaps a deeper relationship with God based on their own experiences. Additionally, while helping perform various tasks throughout the tight-knit community, such as aiding in the local elementary school and participating in "food challenges", participants will truly feel at home in a welcoming community. As added incentive, Juniors can complete fifteen of their thirty service hours through participation in the Urban Plunge, along with the submission of a reflection paper. Applicants are advised to apply ASAP. The September trip has concluded, and the October 27-29 retreat is full. As of this writing, applications are available for two more in the spring, in March, and April. This service retreat is open to juniors only. Grandparents’ Day, Thursday Oct. 6 The Liturgical Music ministry, led by Mrs. Evans and Mr. Cashman, sang for freshmen and their grandparents at the annual Grandparents’ Day Mass in Brisette Gym during 3rd and 4th period on Thursday. The freshmen of the Men’s Chorus joined in with about 20 singers. As Mrs. Evans proclaimed, “More is always merrier!” Yearbook Photos Online preorders began for student pictures, which will be taken Oct. 24th and Oct. 25th.
