The actual meaning of travel is to move from one place to another, but we all know it has a more profound significance than that. It helps to de-stress, expand knowledge, make friends, embrace new culinary experiences, and the list goes on. I absolutely love travelling and this month, I had the opportunity (I am aware of how lucky I am!) of enjoying different types of stays: a local escape at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain, a regional getaway at Fairmont Doha and a European adventure at Avani Palazzo Moscova Milan and Avani Rio Novo Venice – read all about my memorable journeys in this Chic Escapes issue.

Utilising noble materials such as wood, leather, silk and aged brass, the space exudes serenity and elegance. Reflecting modern glamour, the space harmonises soft hues, delicate textures and shimmering surfaces, evoking Jimmy Choo’s craftsmanship. Gold accents juxtapose natural elements like Travertino Classico marble and amber onyx stone, while stippled plaster walls complement plush green rugs, infusing warmth into the space. The expansive window facade showcases the brand’s women’s collection, featuring shoes, handbags, small leather goods and the Bridal Collection. Tiffany & Co. celebrate Ramadan with campaign film With Love, We Fly, starring the House Ambassador Nancy Ajram, the Lebanese singer, and showcasing the timeless Bird on a Rock design. The film celebrates the profound impact of love, empowerment, encouragement and togetherness during the Holy Month of Ramadan. Nancy dons the iconic pendant, featuring a 20.2-carat, cushion-cut diamond set in platinum and 18-carat gold, complemented by a ring adorned with fancy intense yellow and white diamonds, each exceeding four carats. These pieces, alongside other creations by French jewellery designer Jean Schlumberger (who created iconic pieces for Tiffany & Co. in the past), including the Flame earrings, Stitches bracelet and the Sixteen Stone ring, honour the festive period. The film is enriched by calligraphic brushstrokes in Tiffany Blue ink, by multidisciplinary artist Carla Salem, which eloquently capture familial love and stability.

H&M unveil their collaboration with emerging brand Rokh, celebrated for their inventive wardrobe staples under Korean designer Rok Hwang, the brand’s Creative Director. The collection, encompassing womenswear, menswear and accessories, showcases Rokh’s hallmark customisable designs and quirky elegance. The line features adaptable and timeless pieces from double-layer trench coats to detachable-hem dresses, corset-style pieces, office-inspired bags and statement jewellery. Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor at H&M, praises the designer’s captivating blend of conceptuality and wearability, expressing excitement for customers to embrace the collection. “Rokh designs have a classic appearance with a radical construction for a timeless approach to design. Chopard unveil a mesmerising jewel set co-designed by Caroline Scheufele, the maison’s Co-President and Artistic Director, and Julia Roberts, the brand’s Global Ambassador. This exceptional collection pays homage to the breathtaking beauty of the Insofu Emerald, marking a significant moment in jewellery history.

The story behind this collaboration begins with the discovery of the extraordinary Insofu Emerald, a 6,225-carat gem found in Zambia’s Kagem mine. Chopard’s decision to acquire the uncut gem stemmed from its unparalleled quality and potential. Recognising the exceptional nature of the gem, Caroline engaged expert emerald cutters from India to unveil its unique character. The cutting process unfolded in Chopard’s Geneva workshops and Jaipur, India, where centuries of jewellery traditions provided a perfect backdrop.

Collaborating with Julia Roberts was a natural choice. As the maison’s Global Ambassador, she brings her creative vision and appreciation for fine jewellery to the table. Her longstanding relationship with Chopard and shared values with Caroline laid the foundation for a collaborative process rooted in mutual respect and trust. The resulting collection, Chopard x Julia Roberts, is a fusion of avant-garde design and timeless elegance.

The parure comprises a ring, necklace and earrings, each meticulously crafted to highlight the allure of the Insofu Emerald. It boldly blends

the gem’s crystalline green, Julia Roberts’ beloved colour sky-blue turquoise and vibrant cherry-red rubellites that evoke the rich heritage of Indian jewellery while embodying contemporary sophistication. The cocktail ring forms a vibrant flower with drop-shaped gem petals, while the earrings feature dangling pear-shaped emeralds, rubellites and turquoise. The necklace is complemented with similar tassels of colourful gems.

Beyond aesthetics, the collection reflects Chopard’s commitment to sustainability, something that is very close to the actress’ heart. Crafted in Fairmined-certified ethical rose gold, each piece upholds the maison’s Journey to Sustainable Luxury. This dedication to responsible sourcing and transparency extends to the Insofu Emerald itself, which was purchased with the intention of ensuring traceability of the entire chain from mine to masterpiece.

Julia Roberts reflects on the collaboration, describing it as an exciting challenge that resulted in jewellery that is both beautiful and sustainable. She emphasises the versatility of the pieces, noting their ability to elevate casual attire with effortless elegance. Caroline Scheufele echoes the actress’ sentiments, highlighting the transformative power of the Insofu Emerald and the collaborative process behind the collection. Audemars Piguet unveil a stunning collaboration with haute couture designer Tamara Ralph.

The Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon Tamara Ralph Limited Edition is a striking testament to the collaboration between the watch brand and the designer, melding horological expertise with high fashion sensibility. Crafted in 18-carat pink gold and adorned with frosted gold, the case radiates luxury, showcasing a unique palette of graded hues – from warm brown and bronze to rich golden tones.

At the heart of this timepiece lies a multi-layered dial that mirrors the intricate detailing and bold femininity synonymous with the designer’s couture creations. Comprising four overlapping circular pink gold plates, the dial creates a mesmerising ripple effect that emanates from the flying tourbillon cage positioned at six o’clock. Evolving from a central brown hue to bronze and culminating in golden tones at the periphery, the dial is finished with a continuous sunburst satin bloom, accented by delicate, diamond-polished gold threads that add depth and sophistication to the design.

The caseback features an 18-carat pink gold octagonal frame, meticulously satin-brushed and polished to perfection, and engraved with the emblematic Royal Oak Concept Limited Edition insignia. The hexagonal crown, echoing the design of the iconic Royal Oak bezel screws, is adorned with a translucent cabochon-cut sapphire, exuding refinement and sophistication. For Schiaparelli’s Haute Couture Spring 2024, Pat McGrath layered cream and powder highlighters on the cheekbones for a mesmerising, multidimensional brilliance. For a truly rejuvenating experience, Apple Sharma embarked on a wellness journey to explore a world of sensory delights at The Domain Hotel and Spa’s VIE Lifestyle Lab.

The Holy Month of Ramadan is all about slowing down, calm retrospection and restoring your mind and body. So, when I had the opportunity to spend a few luxurious hours of me-time at VIE Lifestyle Lab, I welcomed it with open arms.

Perched on the 15th floor of the hotel, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, lies this hidden gem of tranquillity. As I entered the space, I was greeted by the friendly Sonam Dema, who oversees the spa, and the hotel’s lovely marketing manager, Amna Yousif. They welcomed me warmly and gave me a tour of the facility, setting the stage for the relaxing experience that was to follow.

The first thing that struck me was the delightful fragrance of lemongrass that filled the air, creating a soothing atmosphere. The spa’s décor is minimalist yet inviting, with beige walkways that instantly put me at ease. The L-shaped corridor leading to the treatment rooms had a warm glow, lit up with realisticlooking electric candles, adding to the spa’s cosy ambience.

The spa features five beautifully appointed treatment rooms, each named after trees such as Oak, Pine, Maple and Willow. According to Sonam, these names symbolise life, which is fitting for a spa named VIE, meaning life in French. The rooms are adorned with elegant white name plates featuring gold lettering with the signature VIE leaf logo and silk ropes, adding

a touch of opulence.

For my spa day, I had the pleasure of experiencing three treatments: a 60-minute Relaxing Massage, a 30-minute Multi Jet Hydrotherapy Bath and a Colour Therapy session. Each treatment has been designed to enhance your well-being and soothe the mind, body and soul.

RELAXING MASSAGE

My wonderful therapist, Wilma, greeted me warmly and led me to the immaculately prepared twin room named Willow I and II. It was beautifully decorated with candlelight and flowers and the sweet smell of jasmine wafted through the air as I walked in. The massage bed was prepped with tealcoloured towels and rose petals, with soft, calming music creating a welcoming and tranquil setting. I had begun to relax even before the treatment had started.

As I lay flat on my stomach, Wilma asked if I preferred jasmine or lavender oil for my massage and if there were any particular areas that required extra attention. I chose lavender and asked for some extra TLC for my lower back and feet. She started on my shoulders and worked her way down to my feet, expertly massaging and kneading my body. Her hands worked their magic and the pressure was just perfect, not too soft or too hard, making me drift into a slumber-like state almost immediately.

My deep thoughts of seaside escapes and Wilma’s deep massage made me feel as if a giant soothing wave had taken over. The session ended with a face and head massage, leaving me in a state of blissful relaxation.

MULTI JET HYDROTHERAPY BATH

Completely rejuvenated, my next experience took me to the Maple room for the hydrotherapy bath. The room emanated a lovely aroma and the tub was prepared with bath salts and luxurious bubble soap. Hydrotherapy is known to dilate blood vessels and is considered an anti-cellulite and detoxifying therapy. The powerful underwater massage tub has more than 250 jets, which create oxygenated bubbles, promoting deep relaxation and soothing sore muscles.

As I soaked in the warm, foaming water, I felt all my tension melt away, with the tiny water jets massaging every inch of my body and making me feel completely relaxed. The bath was enhanced with colour therapy through the use of LEDs in the tub that changed colour to give the whole experience an ethereal touch. The treatment lasts 30 minutes but you’re free

to stop when you feel you’ve reaped the benefits. I chose 15-20 minutes and after a quick shower, I was ready for the last step of my spa journey.

COLOUR THERAPY

This vibrant therapy session took place in the Eucalyptus room, which was infused with the comforting scents of lemongrass. The small and intimate area had three relaxing pods (much like sun beds), each lit up in a different hue. A steaming cup of camomile tea was waiting for me as I made myself comfortable in one of the illuminated pods, which had three settings: red (activity), green (vitality) and blue (silent), each representing a different aura. Although I tried all the colours, I ultimately

chose the red light, which had an energising yet calming effect –a befitting sensory finish that summarised my entire experience. In addition to the spa, The Domain offers a state-of-the-art fitness centre on the same floor, with stunning views of Bahrain’s skyline. For those looking to unwind, the hotel’s indoor infinity pool on the 36th floor provides the perfect retreat after a long day. Any spa treatment includes complimentary access to the sauna, steam and colour therapy room.

The spa’s tranquil ambience, expert therapists and luxurious treatments make it a must-visit for anyone looking to escape the stress of daily life and indulge in a moment of rest and relaxation. My experience at VIE Lifestyle Lab left me thoroughly reinvigorated and I eagerly await my next visit!

For a change of scene, Fernanda Langhammer embraced a staycation at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain for a journey of unwinding into luxury and enchanting experiences.

Travelling is reported to have a beneficial impact on your health – mental and physical. It can improve your mood, reduce stress, boost your immune system and add a smile to your face. However, it requires a lot of planning and extra time, so how can you get the same positive effects without actually leaving the country? By going for a staycation. And I can truly say that my time at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain allowed me disconnect without the hassle of travelling.

The hotel is the only all-villa property in Bahrain, and it provides a luxurious experience. Offering 78 private villas of one, two and three bedrooms, each with their own pool, takes sophistication to a whole new level. With 24hour butler service, you can be pampered at any time of the day or night – personalised service is an important aspect of Raffles’ values.

The hotel conservatory lobby is a marvellous, massive space that looks like someone’s living room with many potted plants (an array of tall, short and hanging plants) and different seating areas with sofas, armchairs and pouffes as well as many decorative elements such as lamps, vases and candles. Everything is tastefully chosen in a colour palette that goes from ivory and earthy tones to grey and black. The greenery from the plants and fresh flowers add a natural scent to the ambience, giving you a pleasant sensation. Meanwhile, water fountains take your hearing sense to calming and relaxing mode.

The Arabic arches and doors between the spaces bestow a sense of palatial grandeur to the property. Mashrabiya’s architectural element, with its iconic lattice technique, covers the main hall’s glass ceiling right after the entrance. This Islamic geometric pattern has also been added to other areas for a regional touch to the interior design. The natural light is allowed to pass through this magnificent ceiling, creating an enchanting vibe.

I was mesmerised by this fantastic place. I then headed to the left to find the check-in area; on my way, I passed by Ycone Paris, the celebrated patisserie from French Chef Yazid Ichemrahen – if you have a sweet tooth, this is undoubtedly the place to visit. I reached the reception, which looked more like an extension of the space without standing out – I loved that it blended with the rest of the décor, making it quite cosy. Win, the receptionist, welcomed me with a lovely smile; the check-in was smooth, and we were sitting in the buggy heading to our private villa in no time.

Esther, our butler, drove us to our one-bedroom villa within comfortable walking distance of the lobby. The privacy of these villas needs to be mentioned. The big wooden door opened to a wide space, and the tall walls enclosing the area gave an incredible sense of seclusion. Inside the walls, you have the villa itself, with a living room, bedroom and incredible bathroom, forming a U-shape. In the middle of the U, there is a Jacuzzi which is attached to the private pool. The pool is big and decorated with dark blue tiles with hints of sparkle, making it quite elegant. The temperature-controlled water allows it to be used throughout the year regardless of the weather. The building disposition permits you to see and access the pool from all rooms, but the view from the bedroom was the best! During our stay, I lay in bed and watched the water and the small waterfall for long moments, enjoying the peaceful view.

By the pool, there is a large dining table and loungers for chilling while enjoying the outdoors. There is also an indoor dining room and living area with a TV to relax with your friends and loved ones.

A selection of sweets waited for us when we got to the room and a welcome note from Marie-Beregere Chapoton, the hotel’s General Manager. Nespresso coffee and a selection of fine teas were also available in the room. We felt pampered with so much care and attention to detail.

DINING EXPERIENCE

During our stay, we had the opportunity to try Palma, the hotel’s main restaurant’s, Iftar. With a by-the-table concept, we had a spread of cold and hot appetisers such as original and octopus hummus, taboule, labneh with caramelised beetroot and carrots, green salad, kibbeh, vegetable samboosa and a warm bread basket. What a great start! The mains were too many and we chose a selection of grills with giant prawns, lamb chops and tender beef ribs – everything cooked to perfection. Nazir, our waiter for the night, was extra attentive and asked the chef to prepare some vegetarian options to accommodate our diet preferences.

Our breakfast was served in the villa with a special touch: a floating basket. I love breakfast food, and the Raffles Breakfast Experience was more than I could have wished for (it was definitely my favourite meal). It had the best croissant I ever tried in my life and the local Peninsula goat cheese was spectacular. The Mezza, a halved eggplant with labneh topped with spring onions and pomegranate and Raffles Shakshouka, made with air-dried tomato, were the highlights of the savoury options. Lunch was also served in the villa, and we had the Lemon Thyme-infused Roasted Beetroot Salad, Spanish Water Scallop and Black Seabass, a light but filling meal that we all enjoyed for its freshness and well-balanced flavours.

WELLNESS SPA VILLA

Not only does the calming environment of the hotel help you disconnect from the world outside, but the spa concept offered at Raffles takes you to a complete state of bliss. The Wellness Spa Villa is a three-bedroom villa transformed into a realm of peace, providing unique treatments. It is the only hotel in Bahrain offering the latest technology and procedures from the exclusive Dr Burgener Switzerland. As part of the well-being programme offered at Raffles, I joined a yoga session in the garden with Anudeep, the instructor. He started the session by explaining that yoga is not only about flexibility but about balancing body, mind and soul. The smell of the grass and the sound of birds made the onehour experience very pleasant – I left feeling lighter and somehow energised.

The Writers Lounge feels like a private members’ club with impeccable décor in muted tones and statement lighting. On the ceiling is a poem by Bahraini poet Ahmed Mohammed Al Khalifa about the country’s rich civilisation, which gives a sense of uniqueness to the space. The walls are adorned with captivating Arabic artwork and calligraphy, and the seating area comprises a large plush sofa, comfy chairs, a pool, chess and checkers tables.

HERITAGE MEETS ELEGANCE

OHLALA’s editor, Fernanda Langhammer, spent two nights at Fairmont Doha for a sophisticated and unforgettable stay.

Alavish stay and somehow an escape from routine is what most people are looking for when going for a regional getaway. And when I say luxurious, I mean opting for extraordinary, something Qatar knows well and delivers with excellence. During my visit to Doha, I stayed at one of the most talked about hotels in town, Fairmont. But my unique journey started with a pick-up from the airport in a Mercedes-Benz S-Class Luxury Sedan for a great first impression. Located in the incredible Katara Towers, Fairmont Doha is one of the two towers that compose this astonishing piece of architecture, while Raffles Doha comprises the other one. While I was there, I noticed how it had become a landmark in the capital, with people coming to visit the reception and gardens to snap an Instagrammable moment. And, of course, have a cosmopolitan afternoon tea at Dôme Fairmont Lounge – a French-inspired patisserie.

Regarding the lobby, think of something innovative where the desks are not the main focus; they are discreetly located at the side (quite hidden), while wooden domes with funky and comfy seating areas populate the space. However, the central piece has to be the chandelier, one of the tallest in the world at 56 metres and decorated with bulbs that resemble Qatari pearls that light up in synchronised movements – I was mesmerised by it and, as I stayed on the eighth floor, I spent a few minutes watching the light dance from every possible angle.

My check-in was smoothly done by Daniel, Guest Experience Manager, in the comfort of my one-bedroom suite. To my surprise, mini OHLALA magazine covers hanging from a tree with chocolates and a handwritten note from General Manager, Amine Bouhalba, welcomed me to the property. Sandwiches and fruits were waiting for me on the table – what a treat! I was already feeling extra special at this point.

The room was like something from a movie, beautifully decorated with the colours seen throughout the hotel, the blue of the sea and beige of the sand. It had a spacious lounge area with a massive TV, a comfy sofa, a round table with chairs and a desk where I placed my computer; later on, I opened the automated curtains and enjoyed the view of the vast Arabian Gulf waters while working a bit – what a wonderful change of scenery. Before reaching the bedroom area, a professional coffee machine grinding fresh coffee was available, built-in shiny lacquered wood surfaces resembled the interior of a luxurious yacht (a key inspiration of the hotel and seen in many other spots). The bed seemed to come from the fairy tale The Princess and The Pea, adorned with a shell headboard as a reference to Qatar’s pearling history. The bathroom walls feature an almost transparent white marble where the light passes through for a dreamy atmosphere. The toilet lid is automated and lifts as soon as you approach and the temperature-controlled seat added a nice touch, mainly for the cold months. The toiletries were from the French brand Clarins.

WELLNESS CALLING

To start the stay on an even better note, I headed to the recently opened Fairmont Spa. The wellness retreat is located on the fifth floor, right next to their state-of-the-art gym, which is under Pillar Wellbeing, a philosophy constructed around the three pillars of human well-being: movement, nourishment and recovery. A globally known concept that is open to guests and members.

I filled out Fairmont Spa’s Lifestyle Consultation about my health and personal preferences and one of my therapists, Hanifah, showed me the facilities composed of a sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. She also told me that all eight treatment rooms are named after blue gemstones. My room was Aquamarine, and the view when she opened the door was stupendous! The massage bed was facing the turquoise ocean, and I couldn’t catch my breath; one of the most amazing spa room views that I have ever seen.

It certainly put me in the relaxing mood I was hoping for. Fairmont Spa works with one of the best skincare lines in the market, 111 Skin. I had a 60-minute Signature Harley Street Facial considered topical Botox. Afterwards, it was time for a 60-minute, full-body deep massage with peppermint oil performed by another therapist, Hafida. I then moved to the relaxation room and, as you can guess, it had an ample view of the sea that I contemplated while sipping my chamomile tea.

DINING MEMORIES

Fairmont Doha is not just a very stylish hotel; it is also the destination for memorable dining moments. I already mentioned Dôme, at which you can experience a delightful afternoon tea, Le Tea à la Française, where the savoury bites and sweet treats come in a portable wooden dome, resembling the seating area in the lobby, in a cloud of dry ice smoke for extra wow. From the canape selection, the highlight goes to the Truffled Mushroom Éclair, it had a creamy interior that took my taste buds to another dimension, while the scones were warm and comforting with a crunchy outside layer and soft inner – I highly recommend it. Breakfast is served at Vaya!, a restaurant that also serves a Latin Americaninspired menu. The breakfast had all my favourite items and much (much) more. The décor is captivating and makes you feel as if you are in a vibrant central market in South America. During breakfast, the chefs get the ingredients from the big fridges and cook right in front of you; everything looks fresh and tastes delicious. I had the opportunity to come back with the OHLALA team and have a scrumptious lunch prepared by Sebastian, the Argentinean Head Chef. We had a refreshing pear salad, lobster ceviche, Fajitas Campesinas (a vegetarian paradise of well-seasoned vegetables and tortillas) and, of course, striploin steak with chimichurri sauce. I don’t really have a sweet tooth, but the churros with dulce de leche were the stars of the show.

VAYA!

For a fine dining experience, Masala Library by Jiggs Kalra is, for me, the place to go. I have dined in many Indian restaurants, but what Masala Library offers is pure mastery when it comes to progressive fusion cuisine. It blends Indian flavours with global techniques and ingredients such as the Tandoori Hamachi, which adds a Japanese flair to this Indian staple where meat is marinated and then cooked in an intense fire in the tandoor oven. The menu is divided into Forest Perfume (vegetarian dishes), Ocean Waves (dedicated to seafood) and Songs of Fire (with meat and chicken options). You can mix and match the appetisers, which are unmissable, before heading to the vast main selection. It’s definitely the place to head if you have a special celebration.

Last but not least, Provok is the spot for innovative dishes prepared by the skilled Korean Chef Taimoo Sun. His approach to the food served has a healthy core; he mixes and matches ingredients that are good for your gut, but that also taste like a flavour explosion. The Kimchi Pizza was my dining companion’s favourite creation, while I absolutely loved the Korean taco made with a seaweed and crunchy rice shell with a concoction of shimeji mushroom filling bathed in a creamy sauce. A delicious bite with not only exceptional flavours but interesting textures. Located on the 33rd floor, it’s the place to go if you want to impress your date.

ONLY AT FAIRMONT DOHA

I could write a lot more about my stay at Fairmont Doha, but I would need the whole magazine for that. But there are a few things that I need to mention. There is a bench in the elevator; how great is that? In Masala Library, you find a wall with a replica of one of the facades of the Taj Mahal with the same texture as the original building. All the staff uniforms are personalised for each restaurant, highlighting their characteristics – my favourite is Vaya!’s. A décor highlight at Dôme Fairmont Lounge, apart from the massive glass container in the middle of the restaurant, is the 64 teapots made exclusively to decorate the wall behind the counter. Finally, the whole hotel interior is covered in 24-carat gold tiles. There is much more, but I would recommend you to go and experience it for yourself. I am sure you will find a list of interesting things to highlight that will catch your eye. Don’t forget to tell us later.

Fall in love with Milan and Venice with OHLALA’s editor’s memorable trip to these two cities, where she explored their cultural aspects while staying at two Avani Hotels & Resorts properties.

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, Italy is recovering strongly post-pandemic and is ranked the fifth most visited country in the world. There are plenty of reasons that Italy is one of the most popular destinations: it’s an encounter of history, art, architecture, fashion and splendid cuisine. For me, it is the place that I wouldn’t mind going back to over and over again. There is something about Italy that makes everything better – maybe it’s the air, the water or the Italians. I had the chance to visit two iconic locations this time: Milan and Venice, two cities I had already been to, but this time, I was introduced to them in a unique and unforgettable way.

MILAN

Known as the capital of fashion and design, this busy city has many facets. It gives off cosmopolitan vibes but is full of Italian charm and hidden gems.

The Hotel

We were in a group of ladies and stayed at Avani Palazzo Moscova Milan, which has one of the best locations in town. If you know Milan, you know exactly what I am talking about. It is located in the Porta Nova area in the heart of Zone 1 and is within walking distance of the fantastic Brera neighbourhood, where you will find cute shops, cafes and art spots. And if you enjoy long walks while travelling like me, you can easily reach the Duomo.

The hotel has a charming façade like a grand old farmhouse but with modern amenities. The light green window shutters add loveliness to the building, which offers 65 rooms and suites. My room was on the second floor, and I comfortably reached it by using the stairs which had contemporary glass handrails and many windows.

The room was not big (don’t forget it’s Milan, not the Middle East), but big enough to accommodate my belongings and myself comfortably. The king-size bed was pristine white and so snuggly that sleeping there felt like a big hug. I loved the double-height ceiling with massive old-style windows filling the room with natural light. There were stairs that took me to the mezzanine area, where I found a sofa, coffee machine and TV – such a cosy space. The bathroom was stocked with all the necessary toiletries, and everything was spotless. As part of the AvaniFit concept, a personalised yoga mat is available in every room to inspire a morning of meditation and stretching. In the hotel’s basement area, you find the amaTi wellness and beauty spa, where I had a facial treatment. For the first time in any spa I have been to, the treatment was carried out on a water bed. How unusual is that?

Dining Scene

Eating in Italy is an unmissable experience. I think it is very hard not to have amazing food memories from this country. The first night, we dined at Forte Milano (they have another branch in Miami), located on the ground floor of the hotel. The restaurant is a seafood paradise and the décor takes you to the ocean with maritime-inspired paintings and other items. The red velvet curtains and dimly lit room create a cosy and intimate ambience that I absolutely loved. We had a wide selection from the Raw Fish section on the menu, including tuna, red king prawn, langoustines carpaccio and wild seabass, avocado and lime and langoustines tartare, with the latter being my favourite for its fantastic texture. I am gnocchi obsessed, so for my main I opted for the gnocchi with red shrimp, cherry tomatoes and Pecorino cheese. I was very happy with my choice as the flavours were so comforting, balancing the sweetness of the prawns and

the acidity of the tomatoes – I can say I went to bed feeling very happy. Our lunch on the following day was at Stendhal Milano, an eatery that proudly serves Milanese cuisine. The restaurant is painted green with lots of antique items decorating the space, such as old radios and books. We did have a fabulous spread but the highlight goes to the zucchini flowers stuffed with ricotta cheese and pesto, a historic dish by Stendhal and everyone’s favourite. For the main, I had the Pizzoccheri from Valtellina, a traditional dish from Valtellina, a valley in northern Italy. At first, I was a bit sceptical because it’s made with buckwheat pasta, cabbage, potatoes and loads of cheese, but it was highly recommended; not everywhere offers it, and I am glad I took the opportunity to try it. It was completely different from anything I’ve eaten in my life and absolutely delicious; the comforting flavours of the creamy cheese sauce with pieces of cabbage and potato unexpectedly make an exciting marriage of flavours. I ate every morsel of it, and I will definitely order it again if I see it on any menu. Dinner was at Osteria Serafina, a trendy dining spot with a daily waiting list. The décor is minimal, but the attention goes to the many bottles of vintage grape stacked on the walls – the place is cosy with a laidback vibe. The star appetiser was undoubtedly the Pappa e Burrata, a creamy round burrata from Caseifificio Artigiana, one of the best dairy producers in Italy. It had a delicious tomato base that I was actually eating by itself. I haven’t been to all the countries in the world, but tomatoes in Italy are just the best! Serafina are very famous for their Tajarin Al Tartufo, a simple dish of fresh tagliolini pasta (super thin and fresh as can be) and black truffle. But I opted for the Raviolo Porro e Funghi, packets of fresh pasta filled with grilled leeks and sauteed mushrooms. A gorgeous dish, comforting and light, with the pasta cooked to perfection and smooth textures.

Milanese Experiences

But this trip was not just about food. The team from Avani prepared unique and out-of-the-box activities. We had a fascinating tour through vintage stores guided by lovely Sara; we visited Humana, Vesto Milano, Brivio and the iconic Cavalli e Nastri with second-hand pieces from highend brands such as Gucci, Prada, Valentino and much more. As a fashion lover, I wanted to stay in each store for hours and buy half the inventory – I ended up with just a few purchases. The tour ended with gelato at Ciacco, a fantastic way of exploring the fashion scene in this capital ‘de la moda’. The Fiat 1971 500C tour was, without a doubt, an exciting way to visit this cosmopolitan city. Federico, the man behind the wheel, calls his tiny car the Old Lady, and he took us around town to see some landmarks in this iconic automobile. Not even the rain disturbed this superb trip; we took spectacular photos in front of the Arco della Pace and the Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) building, which is usually covered in plants during the warm months of the year. We also explored a hidden gem, the rainbow district, with colourful small villas and secret gardens –more like a South American neighbourhood. But what really caught our attention were the pink flamingos in the Villa Invernizzi in the heart of the Quadrilatero del Silenzio (silent district) which is home to many Art Nouveau constructions. The birds have been living there for many years, and some of them are 25 years old. The residence is private, but you can admire these non-native birds from the street.

VENICE

We then got a train and headed to this floating city known for its canals, gondolas and 417 bridges – one of the most picturesque locations in the world.

The Hotel

The team at Avani Rio Novo Venice were waiting for us with big smiles and warm hospitality. The hotel is eye-catching with its glass and stone building angled in such a way that you have a privileged view of this enchanting city. It has a key location, near the train station, but also very close to the area where cars are allowed to enter. This means it is perfect for reaching and exploring the city. The property offers 144 rooms and suites with on-site gym and meeting rooms. Ideal for a relaxing holiday or business purposes.

The room was absolutely perfect, with everything you need and more. With windows that go from ceiling to floor, the natural light and canal view were a highlight for me. A comfy bed full of pillows and a big mirror with a welcome note were the other top features, with the big shower with perfect water pressure competing as the best element.

The hotel décor is inspired by cinema (influenced by the Venice International Film Festival), with black and white photographs of film stars taken in the city. The whole vibe is vibrant and lively, with an outdoor socialising area that will be open during the warmer months for an al fresco experience.

AVANI RIO NOVO

Dining Scene

The 8millimetri restaurant is where the fabulous breakfast happens with a wide selection of pastries, breads, smoothies (following the hotel’s healthy lifestyle concept), fruits and delectable Italian coffee. It is also where we had amazing dishes, such as a charcuterie board in a very Italian way with an array of cold cuts, a selection of delicious cheeses, nuts and juicy cherry tomatoes. We also had a memorable dinner there with a spread prepared by the chef in a five-course repast that impressed our palates with ingredients such as cassava covered in charcoal bites, fried polenta accompanied by traditional Venetian style Baccalà (a creamy spread made with cod fish) and local grilled Ombrina fish as the main course. Everything was well-cooked and with an incredible balance of flavours and textures.

To better understand Venetian cuisine, we dined at Osteria alla Bifora. As a city by the ocean, the seafood offerings are many. Staples such as Baccalà prepared in different ways and Figato’ alla Veneziana’ (Venetian liver) are the traditional picks on the menu, but you also find Bolognese lasagna for those looking for homemade comfort food.

But one of the dining spots that must be mentioned is Harry’s Bar, probably the most famous restaurant in Venice. The Cipriani restaurant empire dates to 1931 when Giuseppe Cipriani Sr. opened Harry’s Bar. We even had the pleasure of meeting Arrigo Cipriani, Giuseppe’s son, who still greets guests with a smile at the height of his 91 years. The place is where carpaccio and the well-known drink Bellini were created. They have a selection of signature dishes, but I have to say that the Paccheri di Gragnano alla Sorrentina, in simple words, pasta with tomato sauce, was the best of them all and worth the trip.

Venetian Experiences

Venice is known for its carnival and iconic Venetian masks and we had the chance of meeting Augusto, an artist who has produced the masks used in the TV series Gossip Girls and movies such as Fifty Shades Darker and Spider-Man: Far from Home. With Augusto’s help, we created our own by choosing the base and Baroque elements made with hot glue and paint. I felt like an artist and ended up with a unique Venetian mask of my own. Murano, an island close to Venice, is known for glasswork, so we hopped in a boat to make our own glass beads. The lovely couple Andrea and Cristina from Penzo + Fiore Glass Studio welcomed us for an afternoon of glass, fire and beautiful beads. The couple worked with FENDI for a collection of glass accessories and humbly share their knowledge in private workshops. An experience that I will take with me in the form of my own glass beads. But I have to say that from all the amazing experiences the team from Avani prepared for us, the best, and unarguably the simplest one, was an early morning run crossing the numerous bridges and stone pavements of Venice. Denis, our energetic guide, not only took us on a magnificent expedition but also shared fun facts about the city. The visit to the fish market and empty Piazza San Marco were the highlights of this sensational run.

We ended our journey in the most Venetian way, onboard a gondola, a trip that will stay in my memories for years to come. I have to say a massive thank you to the stupendous team at Avani Palazzo Moscova Milan and Avani Rio Novo Venice. GOOD FOOD, MEANINGFUL MOMENTS

When we eat, emotions become associated with the experience. The Ritz Gourmet Lounge left lingering memories with Fernanda Langhammer and the OHLALA team over a breakfast and lunch feast.

If there is an iconic place to dine on the island, it is The Ritz Gourmet Lounge at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. Its French flair and impeccable, decadent décor transport you to a sophisticated Parisian café with a twist. The twist comes in a unique interior design touch – paintings hanging on the ceiling! Comfortable sofas and armchairs in floral and paisley upholstery and delicate tableware add to the dreamy vibe. It also has a veranda, which is a great area to enjoy your food al fresco.

During my visit, the restaurant was buzzing with a group of ladies who were clearly regulars, ordering their coffees with a simple: “As I like it, please”. Other tables were taken with people enjoying small talk or by themselves. It has such a nice ambience and offers an array of options, so no matter the size of your hunger or craving wishes, you will find something delicious to eat. The place is well-known for its pastries and desserts (the infamous cheesecake is a best-seller and a must-try), but classic savoury meals are just as fantastic. The all-day dining is operating its regular hours during Ramadan and is now offering the Ultimate Morning Coffee Experience, from 7am to 11.30am – a curated breakfast with everyone’s favourite morning bites. For those who love to try new options but are currently fasting, don’t worry, this delightful spread will still be available after the Holy Month.

The breakfast comes on a three-tiered tray with a selection of savoury and sweet options; it reminded me of a lovely afternoon tea treat. The best part was that I didn’t have to choose between sweet or savoury. Every time I go for breakfast, I always try to get someone to share one savoury and one sweet pick with me; in this case, you get it all. But not just that, there’s also a plate with freshly cut fruits such as watermelon, melon, blueberries and strawberries and a basket of croissants and other breads. And you can order your favourite drink, coffee, tea or juice. I opted for an Americano and orange juice, while my dining companion chose a flat white.

We started by trying the savoury options: three slices of bread with different toppings. My colleague went for the eggs Benedict, which was composed of a perfectly cooked poached egg (yes, with a creamy, runny yolk) that sat on a bed of spinach covered in light yellow Hollandaise sauce. She also tried the smoked salmon in multigrain bread with capers. We later found out that the salmon is smoked in-house, and its thin texture makes the bite very light with the perfect smoky aftertaste. I opted for my favourite breakfast item, avocado on sourdough bread with a mashed avocado base with slices on top and some cherry tomatoes decorated with tiny edible purple flowers – a beauty to the eyes and a delicious and healthy fatty option to start the day. The mini croissant filled with scrambled eggs and cheese was soft and a treat to the palate.

And that’s not all from the savoury options; small falafel balls covered in sesame seeds and grilled halloumi cubes coated in zaatar added an Arabic touch to the ensemble along with hummus, labneh and olives. The falafel bites were crunchy on the outside and moist inside, and the halloumi was super tasty with the addition of zaatar. I am a hummus lover, so I added it to my avocado bread for a hint of earthiness, expanding the avocado’s bland flavour. Butter pancake and classic cinnamon French toast with berry compote and maple syrup were the sweet options. They were fluffy with a hint of vanilla that made them kind of dreamy and comforting. But if you like croissants, you will have a feast with chocolate, pistachio, almond, cheese and plain. Flaky and airy with a nice ratio of filling, they were a great treat to end this perfect spread.

However, there is much more at The Ritz Gourmet Lounge. As I always say, food is not just about satisfying hunger but an act that connects you to your feelings – be it childhood memories or new ones created when you are dining. To make these feelings come to life, you need a menu that offers classic dishes with an exciting approach, and that’s precisely what The Ritz Gourmet Lounge provides.

We had the Endives Salad with blue cheese, baked cherry tomatoes, candied walnuts, chives and mustard dressing. Endives are firm, crunchy and bitter leaves that, combined with the tartness of blue cheese and the sweetness of the baked cherry tomatoes, created an explosion of flavours. It was so refreshing and daring at the same time; I really enjoyed it.

The appetiser was the star dish of the day: Baked Goat Cheese in filo pastry, baked cherry tomatoes, candied walnuts, rocket leaves, honey and balsamic. It was also filled with caramelised onions, making this everyone’s favourite. The mix of soft goat cheese and crispy filo elevated the textures, and the balsamic added the necessary tanginess to make this a dish that will stay on my mind and something I will return to. I am sure that’s what most restaurants want to provoke in their guests – at least one dish that touches them.

For the main course, we opted for the classic Pan Seared Salmon served with steamed vegetables and lemon beurre blanc sauce. The salmon was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and flaky and moist inside. My dining companion said this dish reminded her of her mum, from whom she would always steal some bites as this is what she always orders.

The dessert was Pêche Melba, another traditional recipe made with poached peaches, raspberry sauce and cream – an effortless and sophisticated sweet treat to end this spectacular meal on a high note.

The Ritz Gourmet Lounge is the place to eat beautiful food that will evoke pleasant feelings. The same dining companion said that despite the salmon being a comfort food for her, she left the meal thinking about the adventurous flavours of the Baked Goat Cheese (it was the first time she tried these flavours), and that’s what a memorable food experience should sound like.

OHLALA SPENT THE DAY IN THE NEW AUDI S3 SPORTBACK, A BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED, TECH-LADEN MODEL, THAT IS SURE TO TAKE THE PREMIUM COMPACT CAR SEGMENT BY STORM.

Many years of test-driving upmarket motor vehicles have led OHLALA to develop serious feelings for the Audi brand. After all, what’s not to love about this German-based, highend car manufacturer? They consistently produce some of the finest vehicles to grace our roads – models always at the cutting edge of performance, safety and style.

Having already experienced the Audi A5 Coupé, the Audi RS7 and the Audi e-tron Sportback 55 Quattro in recent years, we were most excited when invited by Audi Centre Bahrain to try out the new Audi S3 Sportback, the brand’s latest competitor in the premium compact market segment.

DYNAMIC EXTERIOR

At first glance, we were captivated by the S3 Sportback’s spirited appearance. With its athletic shape and Python Yellow Metallic paintwork, we felt the car would look as comfortable in the Fast and Furious franchise as it would out on the roads.

Grabbing our collective attention from the get-go was the broad, lowpositioned single frame with its large rhombus-patterned grille in matte black, gracefully housing the gloss black Audi logo at its centre. Imposing air inlets flanking the grille hint at the on-road intentions of this aerodynamic machine, while the sleek headlights are perfectly shaped, adding to the sporty prowess of the model.

Shifting our attention to the sides, we noted that the shoulder of the body extends in a pronounced line from head to tail, with the areas below curved inward to place a stronger emphasis on the wheel arches.

Housed beneath are 18-inch wheels with an attractive five-twin-spoke V design. We loved how the C-pillars of the Sportback appear to give the entire vehicle a forward thrust, further adding to the powerful presence of the S3.

At the back end, the heavily contoured diffuser was instantly noticeable, with the four distinctive exhaust tailpipes emphasising the car’s dynamic presence. Our favourite rear component, however, had to be the long roof edge spoiler that accentuates the muscular shape and width of the vehicle.

PROGRESSIVE INTERIOR

Slipping into the multi-adjustable front seats of the S3, we appreciated how the bold design and striking three-dimensional details of the exterior continued inside.

No matter where we looked, precise horizontal lines and cleanly designed surfaces dominated the internal layout. The expertly crafted instrument panel sits perfectly in position, underscored by a horizontal décor surface that runs the entire width, only interrupted by the steering wheel column. Designed in sporty anthracite tones, we could only identify top-quality materials throughout the interior. Aluminium and carbon are used as decorative inlays, while the door armrests and instrument panels feature contrasting stitching. We loved the illuminated door sill trims and the coloured edging around the floor mats. Additional design details included the S embossing in the front seat backrests, black headlining and stainlesssteel pedals, along with the contrasting stitching and S emblem of the flatbottomed sports steering wheel.

Despite the sleek and aerodynamic shape of the exterior, the interior of the S3 Sportback is surprisingly spacious. In the cockpit, we enjoyed oodles of leg, arm and headroom and in the back, we found the seating to provide sufficient comfort space, even for longer journeys.

The luggage compartment provides 325 litres of storage space – a capacity increased to 1,145 litres with the rear seats folded flat. The loading floor can be inserted at different heights, with the tailgate opening and closing with a simple foot motion. These characteristics ensure the sporty S3 is not just a pretty face but practical for everyday use.

TOP-NOTCH TECH

Although we cannot sing the praises of the new S3 Sportback's exterior and interior designs loudly enough, it is the outstanding tech the brand has included that deserves the most attention.

The first thing we noticed about the displays and controls of the new Sportback is that Audi have dispensed with the analogue instruments and rotary pushbutton of its predecessor.

The new main unit is the third generation of the modular infotainment platform (MIB 3). We were impressed with the speed and user-friendly nature of this setup. Providing 10 times more computing power than the MIB 2, it also works with the Online Connectivity Unit (OCU), fitted with an integrated SIM card and a wi-fi module. The OCU performs all connectivity-related tasks, including fast data transfer.

We accessed the infotainment system through the central 10.1-inch touch display, featuring acoustic feedback as standard. This also applies to the digital instrument cluster, with its 10.25-inch diagonal display operated via the multifunction steering wheel. Furthermore, with MMI Navigation Plus installed, the displays appear in the Audi virtual cockpit, a feature boasting many of its own additional functions. Upon customer request, the S3 can also be equipped with a state-of-the-art head-up display.

Other must-mention tech features include the Audi smartphone interface that can establish contact with the customers’ iOS and Android smartphones, transferring their Apple CarPlay or Android Auto environment to the MMI display.

Safety-wise, it’s no surprise Audi have equipped their new Sportback with a full suite of driver assistance and safety features. These include, but are not limited to, adaptive cruise assist, collision avoidance assist, efficiency assist, emergency assist, turn assist, park assist, lane change warning, exit warning and cross-traffic assist rear. Additionally, the car itself features a modern, crash-resistant body design.

POWER, PERFORMANCE & SAFETY

As good-looking as the S3 is, it’s a purely performance-orientated machine on the tarmac. Engaging the ignition, we were all smiles at the roars of the 2.0 TFSI inline four-cylinder engine. Capable of producing 226kW of power and 400Nm of torque, this two-litre racer can accelerate from 0-100km/h in around 4.9 seconds and delivers an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h. When seated behind the steering wheel, this compact car seemed even faster.

The seven-speed S tronic transmission means lightning-fast gear shifts that add greatly to the responsive nature of the vehicle. With the Audi drive select dynamic handling system equipped as standard, combined with an ultraefficient braking system, we found the new Sportback to exhibit excellent handling. This meant we always felt in complete control, even when cornering trickier bends at decent speeds. Add a sporty yet taut suspension system to the equation, along with five driving modes and you have a customisable vehicle suited to both on-track and everyday driving conditions. We must mention that thanks to careful soundproofing and sophisticated aeroacoustics, it was always peaceful inside the car as we watched the kilometres roll silently by.
